So, a fun fact about "this is Sparta." That was the final take, and Butler didn't shout it in any of the others. He just said it with a stern voice. But he told Zac Snyder he wanted to try something, so they did the take, and he did the yell. According to Butler, Snyder was laughing his ass off after he did it, and when asked if it was too much, he said, " Yeah, but it was awesome!".

The Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC between the Achaemenid Persian Empire under Xerxes I and an alliance of Greek city-states led by Sparta under Leonidas I. Lasting over the course of three days. 300 Spartans fought. Leonidas was among the last 3 soldiers. He wrote and drew 300, just like he wrote the Sin City comics that were also made into movies and share stylistic similarities. He has a very unique drawing style with alot of emphasis on the contrast between black and white/Darkness and light. Thats why the directors chose to tone down the colours while also highlighting the blood red colours, just like Miller did...

Fun real fact: “The Immortals were called that because they were trained in groups of 10,000 and he had many of these Legions so as 10,000 were reaching the final 1/4 of men left they’d match in another 10,000 and so on and so on , so it seemed like their numbers were infinite and as they advanced it seemed to their enemies as tho the 10,000 they’d killed just got back up as the immortals pressed on putting fear in their enemies when in reality there were jsut countless being sent to the slaughter waves and waves continuously replenishing the 10,000 so they began to be known globally as The Immortals and the world believed they were actually immortal. There’s a lot of this movie that is actually factual . Leonidas was an absolute legend an elite warrior that truly led at the tip of the spear into battle. It’s interesting that the Persian emperor said no one would know Leonidas existed , that he’d wipe his name from history but here, today, SO many centuries later a legendary movie was made about him and the 300 Spartans. Guess he didn’t wipe it from history enough. Lol

  • @carl32

So, there actually almost certainly WAS a real life military unit called The Immortals in the Persian Empire, though obviously nothing like what was pictured in the movies. They were likely some kind of bodyguard force or palace guard, or that's the best guess. They got their name not because the individuals were immortal, but because the unit always numbered 1000 strong. If one got sick, maimed, killed, whatever, there was a roster of backups, and the next man immediately filled the spot, so they were "immortal." But they live up to their name, because the rulers of that area for most of history since the Persian Empire have always had a unit named (either officially or unofficially) The Immortals. In fact, some of their insignia/emblems are still in use today, in the Iranian (modern day Persia) Army.

If you want more information on Spartan society, I highly recommend Plutarch's authoritative history, "On Sparta." This movie simultaneously romanticizes their political idealism and underplays the brutal nature of their culture.

Such an epic real world battle I’d probably never heard of it not for this movie. There were also around 700 thespians, 400 thebans, and likely some others fighting with the 300 Spartans and it’s a shame they aren’t revered like the Spartans because those additional hardly tipped the scale much so you know they played every bit as much a role as the Spartans did in their own way. Still I understand artistic liberty and respect it.

Ephialtes it was not a Spartan monster but a local sheperd.Leonidas didnt die last one....

The saying "Come back with your shield, or on it" was a real thing that was said to Spartan soldiers when they left for war. Most often said by their wives, mothers or possibly daughters, whatever closest female living relative. It meant basically come back victorious or dead, hence WITH your shield means they won, on your shield means death because when a Spartan was killed in combat his fellow Spartans would carry his body on his shield. Spartans NEVER left their dead behind. In fact the United States Marine Corp took inspiration from the Spartans when it comes to the strict policy of never leaving a fallen warrior behind

The first scene with Leonidas as a child, being beat up and taken from his mother, always puts women at unease, while men think it's great.
    We are built differently.:D
PS: No, Leonidas did not seek "permission" from his wife, a leader does not ask for permission from his followers, he just wanted to know if she was ok with it, he would've done it either way.

The army of Greece against Xerxes and his Persians was 300 Spartans , the guard of Leonidas , 700 Thespians under Demophilos , the number is up to 1000, and 400 Thebians as abducted warning matter to Thebes for treachoring behavior to Greece . That was the standarts. Now , hundmans was travelling with the Spartans. Big size. So 4000 + against millions of Persians . The Immortals of Persians always be 10.000 in number ! Don't forget the 1000 Phockies at the path's wall on Anopea Atrapos ( Upgoing path). Ephialtes by that treatory was beheadead as a treator. The snitch never live in Greece. Gorgo is the queen of my dreams . I feel Leonidas ... she's amazing... a warrior queen . A walkyrie of Greece! Great and superb. DORIAN BROTHERS ARE AMAZING!!!. All actors are amazing ! Awhouuu! Awwhouu! Awwhouuuuuu!❤ Spartans, the tanks of ancient history. You know know that Persians were their bitch!!! Sparatans mothers mojo was " If with that or apone her " If you throw shield uppon enemy , or die uppon the shield! They never ask how many was the enemy , but where is the enemy. Hoplites for life. Never a wound in the back. Only on chest!❤ My love to our beloved Dorian brothers... Spartans. And the ones stayed till the end of the combat. 700 Thespians , 400 Thebians as an blood debt to their traitorilly behavior to Greece , those times.Glory to all of them!!
