Currently in Geneva Switzerland. There are literally thousands of good quality mountain bikes and eMTBs around the city parked up with flimsy £15 locks. Switzerland apparently is not plagued with low life scum bags that seem to be all over the UK out to thieve anything and everything. I am ashamed of successive governments letting our country descend into chaos!
I live in Geneva, and couple of my colleagues lost their bicycles as well as bikes. So bike theft is also here, but for sure you will not see thieves cutting locks with a grinder.
Are you suggesting bike theft is a new thing? We got stopped 40 years ago by police because a bike had been stolen which looked like the one we were riding. Its not choas - its you looking for bias confirmation and finding it.

I don’t remember gangs hanging out at places like Cannock Chase pulling riders from their bikes or gangs riding round in vans on the look out for ‘victims’. At least in the 60s and 70s the Police would investigate bike theft, one of the reasons today thieves don’t have fear of getting caught.

In the early 1980’s, 13 year old me, was hijacked by a guy while I was riding my first dirt bike ever (suburb of Detroit). Basically lifted me up off the bike by my collar and hurled me into nettles. He got my 1980 Suzuki DS80, only two weeks old. Lost 2 years worth of newspaper delivery money on that one, no insurance either. Hard lessons indeed. Elated you rode clear.

That’s some scary stuff. I had a guy bigger than me try to wrestle my mtb from me on my favorite trail one day. I’m glad you safely got away. I am no fighter but luckily I was able to hit him directly in his nose which gave me just enough time to get on the pedals quickly and I rode like I never had before. I didn’t go to that trail for the whole season after that. The next year I started going there but now I carry a small canister of mace with me and I keep an air tag in my fork/headtube.

I used to ride round there all the time. Nice suburban trails, however, you do get some "yobbo's" hanging around in the woods, particularly near that school sports field.

Fixed sights, nothing to get hung up on. 1.75" Magna Ported barrel. Rubber grips. Powerful but controllable. Carry in a "Sticky" Holster in my front pocket. Never, ever needed it but felt better for having it. Was a victim of a home invasion once and was almost killed. NEVER AGAIN!!!!!

I was riding with two of my mates into a town, bare in mind our bikes are cheap, I got a Schwinn MTB which I use just for commuting around and very light trail riding, planning to upgrade soon and my mates not got anything special either. 3 of us cycle into a town not far away from us and then around 5 lads similar ages to us spot us, we saw them talking to some older teenagers who were also looking at our bikes (these teenagers didnt have their own bikes so i presume they wanted our bikes) I am 14, my mates are of similar age too and these lads were also teenagers. We were driving through Morrisons when they all started following us and asking us to Stop and we just shouted What do you need and kept cycling but they never stopped and then we saw two of them put their hoods up as to cover their face and they attempted to block us in with their bikes, we were able to quickly evade them and one of my mates rammed into their bike and we were able to get away and they continued chasing us until we got into Morrisons and told the security guard at the door that these lads are chasing us and he scared them off by pretending to call the Police. They all fled rapidly when the guard said that. Dont even feel safe in the UK anymore, not gonna let it deter me but I have been avoiding that area completely for a while now. You can carry pocket knife up to 3 inches in pocket btw as long as it doesnt lock, don't need a valid reason either just make sure to never say that it is for self defense and that it is just for emergency use such as a crash etc, if you need to defend yourself or property you can use it and say that you used what you had on yourself to protect yourself and that is legal under UK law. Try ride with someone else but even so eg I rode with 2 others and they attempted so it is never a guarantee stay safe.
I ride a Talaria Sting MX3. I always have to keep my head on a swivel. It's why I keep a Stanley on me that opens and locks, I'm not losing my bike to anyone! Protect yourself and have a fanny pack with other tools to avoid it being suspect.
Few years back two 4x4s went past me and my friends and one had a few bikes loose in the back, they slowed down and then turned onto the estate we just rode onto... luckily they U-Turned and left because they'd loose a life trying to steal from me.
The only time I've turned around that fast with my bike was when I encountered what I think was a bear that was about 25 yards beside me. I was alone in the very back of this bike park I visit often (I'm in Oregon) I never saw it but it sounded identical to a black bear. Heard it the first time and turned off my music. The second got my heart racing and I started talking to myself out loud to alert it of my presence. Needless to say it didn't leave. The third time I heard it, that was my que to LEAVE. The trail basically circled around this noise, and I must have been very close on the climb and not known it. Couldn't go forward or back so I did the only logical thing I could, and that was bombing down the side of the hill to my left. (The "bear" was to my right) I knew there was a trail somewhere down there. I'm just lucky I am fairly good at steep and technical downhills or I wouldn't have made it down the hill. Honestly the rush of adrenaline was way higher than I could have got doing jumps so I decided my ride was over 😂. Also, who knew the side of a steep hill riden blind could be more fun than any man made trails. 😂
Just paid my bike insurance down here in Brazil, Turbo Levo Comp Carbon, costs a hefty amount of money for me not to do it. Most of the E-bikes dudes down here use an electronic tag (Apple, Samsung, you name it), to me that's not enough. You managed to outrun them however, you did put yourself at risk, what if they had a gun? That would be the end of Jacob MTB, over a fucking MTB.
Guns arent legal in UK unless for certain purposes, doubt they would of had a gun maybe a knife but since he was so fast theres no chance they could of caught up
I dont think they would of killed him ngl, some of these gangs do carry knives but its mainly to threaten people, they know if they stab someone or kill them theyre getting locked up for years and its not worth it for a bike, ofc there are still lots of idiot gangsters that think its worth it as its the uk afterall
I grew up in Baltimore MD USA. Bike thieves everywhere, it was awful. We got to the point where no one had a decent bike(just jumpers and Frankenbikes) because it wasn’t worth it because we knew we would get it mugged anyway. I’m in NC now in a rural area….much better but my head Is always on a swivel.
In these instances it is better to run than to fight. In one's mind it may seem heroic and right to fight, but when your belongings and potentially your life are at stake, it is better to live another day than to be a hero.

I ride a Talaria Sting MX3. I always have to keep my head on a swivel. It's why I keep a Stanley on me that opens and locks, I'm not losing my bike to anyone! Protect yourself and have a fanny pack with other tools to avoid it being suspect.
That's one reason I keep a hatchet with me at all times. Local laws may vary

Few years back two 4x4s went past me and my friends and one had a few bikes loose in the back, they slowed down and then turned onto the estate we just rode onto... luckily they U-Turned and left because they'd loose a life trying to steal from me.
The only time I've turned around that fast with my bike was when I encountered what I think was a bear that was about 25 yards beside me. I was alone in the very back of this bike park I visit often (I'm in Oregon) I never saw it but it sounded identical to a black bear. Heard it the first time and turned off my music. The second got my heart racing and I started talking to myself out loud to alert it of my presence. Needless to say it didn't leave. The third time I heard it, that was my que to LEAVE. The trail basically circled around this noise, and I must have been very close on the climb and not known it. Couldn't go forward or back so I did the only logical thing I could, and that was bombing down the side of the hill to my left. (The "bear" was to my right) I knew there was a trail somewhere down there. I'm just lucky I am fairly good at steep and technical downhills or I wouldn't have made it down the hill. Honestly the rush of adrenaline was way higher than I could have got doing jumps so I decided my ride was over 😂. Also, who knew the side of a steep hill riden blind could be more fun than any man made trails. 😂
And this is why I carry when riding a bike.

Just paid my bike insurance down here in Brazil, Turbo Levo Comp Carbon, costs a hefty amount of money for me not to do it. Most of the E-bikes dudes down here use an electronic tag (Apple, Samsung, you name it), to me that's not enough. You managed to outrun them however, you did put yourself at risk, what if they had a gun? That would be the end of Jacob MTB, over a fucking MTB.

I grew up in Baltimore MD USA. Bike thieves everywhere, it was awful. We got to the point where no one had a decent bike(just jumpers and Frankenbikes) because it wasn’t worth it because we knew we would get it mugged anyway. I’m in NC now in a rural area….much better but my head

This is terrifying, I think about this all the time when im on my bike. There is pros to living in an area where motor vehicles overshadow bikes, nobody is interested in my bike.

Just saw this........fair play pal, that's some nifty reflexes! I've had about 2 and half grand's worth of components stolen recently from someone's garage, and it's all looking pretty sketchy whether or not I'll get any compensation?! Was wondering about setting myself up a gofundme, just not sure how comfortable I'd feel about begging on the internet, ha!!!
