This video was the first time they saw sheep. It shows their interest. Our Corgi club has herding trials and Corgis of different sizes participate. It's not a matter of their size, it's more how much drive each dog has. th-cam.com/video/NNu6xm8D80Y/w-d-xo.html is a beautiful first trial run of a smaller female Corgi. She's won quite a few High in Trial awards.
This is not a good herding Corgi but points for trying without too much training. Corgis - Pembrokes Corgis in particular - can be easily trained to become great and efficient herders of sheep, cattle and others. They are used on several farms in New Zealand which is an agricultural-rich country.
I've always thought cardigans where better at herding because they have more collie in them. In the US there are some farms that use cardigans, I dont know any that use Pems.
Hi, what do you think about the size of the corgi and how that effects its ability to herd? I have a female Cardi who is really smart and intense, really energetic and really fast (for a corgi), but she is quite small at only 12 kg, and quite light boned for a cardi I think, quite narrow.
Corgis are "heelers," meaning they nip at the heels of animals to direct them (people too). They're also surprisingly nimble, so it's not easy for cattle or sheep to step on them. Corgis are bred to herd, both in body structure and instinct.
Now I know why we call people with no guts 'sheep'. Look how a group of big sheep is scared of a small corgi. If they attack the corgi at the same time, they could knock out the corgi. But they are sheep, so they run away.
Oh you train herding dogs?? What do you know of the subject and do you have any experience to be criticizing someone who obviously knows what they're doing
When that one sheep realized "hey, I'm four times bigger than you. You can't tell me what to do"
I feel bad for that one sheep that was just like, wth is going on lol

Watching this with my corgi and she’s loving every second 😂
That corgi must felt like a wolf
Glad to see them doing the jobs they were made for!
Looks like the border Collie is just laying back and letting the corgi take over the job lol

The border collie did better at herding though.. The corgi was just messing everything up so the border just sat their and gave up!

My bos when he was in bad mood
Trevor Kropf must be the single butt-hurt dislike, hmm?
did the collie bite the sheep's face at 1:47??
That bc must be thinking these dogs are dumb.
That first dog is a terrible example of herding.... Literally that dog is just chasing the sheep every which way. The second dog did fairly well.
border collie is way much better know how to control the sheep
Thats not herding.... thats chasing. There was no skill or training in this dog, any breed can chase around some sheep and bark at them.
Seems more like an instinct try out. He seems to have the instinct.
That's right. Indeed, dog is not supposed to divide a group of sheep into two. Instead it should keep the group intact.
It is instinct testing and is the the first part of training. You would be surprised how many dogs are completely uninterested in herding.
