      @@natelloyd4796 can't compare the two. They're both fantastic airframes, but the operating costs of 747s are way higher. Also the jumbo jet cannot land in all the small airports that a DC-3 can, simply due to size and weight (Some airports do not have enough length on their runways)

    My father worked first on the SST, and then on the 747 project. As a child, I wasn't able to to appreciate the significance of the design, nor the way the 747 would transform the airline industry. I just knew when I saw one that it was "my Daddy's plane." Unfortunately, I was only able to fly on one twice. When the end of the 747 production came, and the last one rolled out of the Everett Boeing plan, I think many of us felt genuine grief, as though we were losing a friend. I don't work in the airline industry, nor am I a pilot, but I just LOVE planes. I enjoy these videos and am gaining more understanding of how so many things have to come together to get us from point A to point B! Thank you Captain Joe.

    I recently watched a video on TV of a 747 being scrapped. Broke my heart to see that big, beautiful airplane being flown-in and landed, and eventually hauled away in trucks as shredded aluminum. I once visited the Boeing plant at Payne Field in Mukilteo, Washington where the plane is built. You get a special love for that plane when you see a line of them in various stages of assembly. Absolutely amazing! As it nears completion, they finish it with the airframe under stress by hanging ten-thousand pound blocks of concrete from the engine stanchions to simulate the weight of the engines. Weirdest thing I've ever seen!

I've only ever been on a plane twice (to and from my first holiday abroad a few years ago) and I'm going on holiday again on Wednesday, which means more flying. • @tjhess2
      @tjhess2 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The engine is certainly running! What you see that look like fan blades not spinning are actually the inlet guide vanes that direct airflow into the proper orientation. The first stage fan blades are actually behind the IGV's and are a bit hard to see from inside the plane. Look up some information on the JT8D engines and you'll see what I'm referring to. Great question!

    She left Boeing and went to work for the U of W for the rest of her life. She died of cancer at the age of 46.
    She never had a bad word to say about Boeing or the old man. Just the SST program employed far too many and the 747 could only take in a few folks at the Everett plant. She did not wish to drive all that way from Seattle since the roads were still being worked on I5.

      I'm very nervous of heights too, but for whatever reason, I feel very safe in an airplane, even in turbulence etc. I think it's because I've obsessively learned so much about aircraft over the past 15 years or so, through books and Captain Joe type videos. The more I've learned, the more reliable and safe they feel. And of course, in the right skilled hands, even very serious situations can have a positive outcome.

    Another great video Joe I find it hard to believe when we talk about the number of 747,s manufactured as 1500 . Looking at the number of bomber aircraft manufactured just in america during WW2 in a few years was upwards of 20000 . The mind boggles at the ability of the aero industry and mass production techniques that built all those aircraft back in the early to mid forties.

      The hump is what sets the 747 apart from all the others. It just adds to the beauty but that's just my opinion. Queen of the sky's should be beautiful, right?
      The 747 has always reminded me of a sea gull. Just the way it looks on the ground with the landing gear down and the tugs moving it about.
