The boxcars and hoppers are to help with braking. 4014 can use their air brakes to help slow it down instead of burning up it's own brakes since a diesel isn't needed anymore in the consist.
Yeah, when my dad and I went to see 4014 in 2019, it was insane. It took some of the most aggressive driving I'd ever seen Dad do (and he was a retired fighter pilot who'd worked for UP before joining the Air Force) to even have a snowflake's chance of good position. So we agreed if we ever got another crack at it, we'd focus on one great photo spot before and one after a scheduled stop, or meet, or whatever. No more chasing.
I hate to burst all of your bubbles, but look this up on TH-cam "Union Pacific Railroad Big Boy 4014 Steam Engine in Feather River Canyon with bridges" That video was shot on July 11th, and guess what, the Diesel was back. Don't know why, but there it is. Either the electronic package that was stashed in the tender failed or malfunctioned, or the Diesel is need for help with braking after all. I will find out when it returns to Cheyenne, since I live here.
@@railgraphix So, even though money was spent and the RTC? was installed into the tender. So it would not need a diesel engine, it still does? Besides, when it left Cheyenne on June 30th, heading west, I watched it leave, there was no diesel engine, but lots of box cars and such behind. To help with braking, or so I was told.
Why the big u p locos always have to run with a diesel is a mystery, and dont try and tell me the bull story about braking and pullinh power,, in the hey days yoi never had f7,s or gp9s coupled to them on a passenger job,
As Ed has stated in numerous presentations and comments, they don’t have a way to easily maintain the brakes on the road if they were to wear out, or if something below happens mechanically. The diesel has in the past had the PTC system. Now 4014 has a custom one.
I like how you framed your video to include that beautiful Wyoming scenery and sky!
@@OctoberChad thank you!
That is so so cool. You filmed this perfectly. ❤
@@gnknd309 thanks!
Free Big Boy…just say no to diesels!
A beautiful day for the boys to be traveling.
The crew were in great spirits that day!

With box cars, hopper cars snd bay window caboose
How come no diesel? Ever since I heard the arguments on why they always had a diesel, it makes so much sense.
PTC - Positive Train Control installed in 4014

Awesome 👍😎👍😎👍

Why didn't you get to the top of Rock River Hill?
The people that pace make it hard to get some locations, and I just have to get to what I can.

Why does 4014 have a dual beam headlight on the front?
@@HunterWilliams-le9bk safety to be more visible
@@railgraphix well that makes sense since it’s hard to see anything at night
Will they add the other cars to the train for the next tour ?
@@RANDOMCNWGUY not sure on that one.
Looks like Ed has an engineer in-training.
@@GaryA he had quite a few of the crew training. Will be fun to see who is in all the pictures and videos.
@@railgraphix To keep the Big Boy running, UP will have to keep adding new people so they always have trained crews at the ready.
Nice!
Please tell me you were not driving and recording at the same time.
No, I either have a passenger take the video, or someone else is driving.

They won't go a long distance without a diesel. Ed has spoke about it helping with wear and tear on the 4014 brakes.

Now just put a real freight train worth of cars behind it.

Ok boomer, well times changes, and union pacific knows a hell of alot more about maintaining a big boy then you do
