      1 very important thing you forgot to mention in this video, is tire pressure. Guys dropping the tire pressure to 20 psi for example are going to use the whole tire without getting to max lean angles, vs having normal road recommended tire pressures like 34- 36 psi. It really makes a huge difference.

      If you're the type who wants to get your knee down and lose your strips, do what I did and go to California Superbike School (I assume they're still around). You use their bikes, leathers, boots and gloves on a track near you so you don't have to worry about trashing your brand new bike with super sick matching helmet. You'll be sliding your knees till the cows come home guaranteed. Make sure your bike is capable and set up properly and you can do it on your bike too.

      @@benchaggaresmusic I completely agree you and the top comment. If you go to a track a few times with your bike you'll have zero chicken strips. Trying to get rid of them on the road is nuts!
      40mph on a 180 hairpin type corner on a track is nice to get your knee down.
      You won't even notice that you're further over on the tyre, it'll just feel right at the time.
      Experienced riders who have been on track will know you'll have chicken strips if you're just riding on the road.
      Don't get "chickened" into something stupid.
      You ride for you.
      You do your thing your way.
      But if you want to get your knee down because it's what YOU want then you'll also get rid of the chicken strips. But don't be focusing on the strips, it'll happen when it's right.

    Dave Moss does an excellent video on this, explaining the technical details of tire profiles etc. FWIW, if you lose a few PSI you can remove your chicken strips, or ride with a pillion, or are just fat like me. Being able to go around the corner doesn't mean you're a better rider, it means you have probably removed your ability to deal with something unexpected. I went for a ride a few weeks ago with a bunch of people on liter bikes, I ride a zx-14. We were out on some very narrow tight windy roads in New Zealand, some of which had loose gravel and bovine excrement on them. When we got to the end of the ride, they asked me why I couldn't keep up. I said, well, I'm listening to you all talking about sliding in gravel and nearly not making turns, and I didn't have any of those issues. So, yeah, I had chicken strips but I wasnt "slow" - but at no point was my life or bike in danger. That's how I feel about chicken strips.. (note that some of these roads are country lanes, beautiful scenic roads, but not enough room for cars to pass easily going opposite directions).

    I live in the north of Spain, lots of any kind of corners, I drive nor fast nor slow... you know, at that pace that you can drive relaxed and control everything just with gas and coast... Using the brakes when needed, but the least the best... I found that kind of driving very satisfying.
    I don't use all the tyre. Just common sense, if something unexpected happens, you better have margin to do something, like lean more.
    If you have already consumed all the rubber, then what?.
    I ride for fun, not to get killed on public roads.
    And remember: many times someone at home is worried from the very moment they hear that engine running, untill you show up again...

    I've been riding my frst bike, a Ninja 400, for a year and a half now and always had some small 'chicken strips' on the tyres and had comments made by others about them, but I never cared. I have fun in the twistys but I've never felt like I could do them any faster safely (lots of them are blind bends and you never know what's round the otherside), and in the area I live in the UK, the roads really aren't all that twisty anyways. I did my first trackday at Silverstone on Tuesday however, and within a couple of laps I had used the entire rear tyre - I was proud of that, because it showed my confidence in the corners was growing, but it also made me realise how there is no way on Earth I would be riding like that on the street!

I think what he was trying to say is an individual with fantastic body position, who holds the bike up higher in the turns, because he's leaning off the bike further, could have big chicken strips, but can be way faster in the turns than an individual who has horrible body position and no chicken strips.

    Maybe half the bikes I have ever owned had scrape marks on the foot pegs or center stand (the ‘73 CB750) but seriously, it seems the attention To chicken strips has been born of TikTok and TH-cam.

    I was learning/driving since september last year and started watching your channel at the same time since our motorcycle schools only teaching us how to pass all practical tests for driving licsense exam and not real word advanced driving techniques. Also at the same time i got my first bike ktm 690 enduro and while finishing for my licence already got 600 brake in miles down on it without a scratch. Now i have 4350 miles with some small enduro falls on dirt and gravel but nothing major (full leatt body protection, cross boots, helmet, gloves) but i never came close falling on the road thanks to your video lessons. And on chicken strips topic: i live in a hill area with narrow streets so when a full size bus or suv appears while doing a closed narrow u turn with slope you have to learn to counter lean at low speeds and sticking as far from the middle lane as possible so my 50% road 50% offroad mitas e07 tires using 100% of its surface even when i am not offroading with lower pressure.

    1) you will have to lean the bike more to make the turn, however you will have less traction through the turn. The faster you're going - the easier it is to lean. Learning to lean your bike going slow is a good skill and will help if you need to swerve as you will reaction faster and with more balance. Just a thought.

  • @someguy9520
    @someguy9520 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    It also depends on the bike and tire size/profile
    For example, i have a NT700. Rear tire is a 150/70/17. I don't need a lot of lean to remove chicken strip. The tire is a Mitas Touring sport. Somewhat flatish profile, so at 35-36 degrees of lean angle, my chicken strips on the rear are gone. Thats also about as much as the footpegs go, so there is that
    The front is a standard 120/70/17, so there is plenty of chicken left 😂 like 1.5cm each side
    But at the end of the day, the only reason to get rid of chicken strips is to have the surface scrubbed in
    Anyone that makes fun of chicken strips should not be taken serious

      @@bjorntappe4139 it is a good indicator of confidence and you can see your progress. I watched a guy on a Harley go into the ditch on the smoothest and nicest gradual curves last week, they were too scared to lean even like 1 degree! Same day but after a storm passed the road was covered in water and I did the same corner at twice the speed limit at night with malfunctioning headlights like it was nothing (because that was still slow for how gentle it was). Most people need to be more confident leaning (it certainly causes accidents) and I did that on old somewhat cracking duel sport off-road knobbies... So it was all rider confidence as the issue.
      I still have a LONG ways to go and actively trying to get more confident in corners because a decade ago I wrecked on a gravel corner (more like ramped over the entire road) and went from being skilled at drifting with absolute ease to someone making turns slower than a grandma in hoverround (which isn't safe with traffic behind you) so last week finding the limit on my bike the lean angle was like 65 to 70 degrees when tight turning in parking lots, which is just feels insane. Now that I know that I won't be as scared to lean the bike over more because the limit is when my feet need to be lifted off the pegs, which is great to know.
      And yes to find the limit one must exceed it, wouldn't recommend with tennis shoes and khakis, but the swelling on my foot is slightly going down and I'm eager to hop back on and practice some more! Be safe, wear your best gear, practice in parking lots where you won't get ran over, and don't be afraid of a little booboo, it's better to get a few scrapes now than in the streets.

    • @jakegarrett8109
      @jakegarrett8109 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bjorntappe4139 I will add just looking at my tires and spending hours on the weekends practicing turns, that visual indicator kept me going seeing the improvements. I went from nervous at 15 degree to playing around legs on the handlebar at 60+ degree lean angle, now I'm much more confident in turns and MUCH smoother and better driving lines since I'm not terrified and tensing up almost missing my entire turns. It's a good indicator, it's not everything but for direct comparisons it's great! Otherwise I'd have to strap a full gyro and accelerometer and log G forces and lean angles onto my bike (which I will, I'm a bit of a nerd and have some extra flight controllers), but for quick reference seeing how much more confident you are, it's a pretty good one (just like zip tie on the front shock to see when you almost bottom out)

I don't recall ever not using the tyres to the extreme edge back then but today have quite noticeable chicken strips on my 2003 Suzuki SV1000. I don't care but will say that I hardly ever hang off the seat as I did when younger, on various bikes and wonder if that's mostly due to today's much wider tyres, a running pressure of 36 front, 42 rear, or a combination of these two things.

    I’ve been on training rides and someone has asked after “why are your chicken strips less than mine when we’ve just done the same ride?”
    I don’t counter balance, and I don’t hang off, but I do lean my head and shoulders in.
    Every corner I take I start wide, making my turn in as late as possible, and finishing tight. By necessity this means I will make a sharper turn than the next guy, especially if he takes the shallower racing line.
    Of course if you are at max lean angle and on the brakes then this won’t work for you, but for me, it is great practice and is a lot of fun.
    My current bike R1250RS leaves more chicken strips than my previous R1200RS, (on the same tyres/pressures -Michelin Road 5) which I find to be quite interesting, especially as I’m touching both heads down (on track of course) on the 1250.
    I don't know the reason for this one.
    Definitely meaningless between bikes and riders though, but can be a useful indicator when setting tyres and suspension up.

    Totally, i have a 200 wide tyre on my S1000RR and if you are down to the edge of that tyre on the street, you are riding way too fast for the road. Only on track with proper temp, riding position and pushing to the limit will the tyre be fully used. A 200 wide tyre has a very steep shoulder and would be over 50 degrees of lean angle to get their. It is not something I would be happy doing on the road from a safety point of view.

    Eliminating chicken strips and dragging knee-two cheeks of the same arse. As a rider you have nothing to prove. Its not all black and white. I use all the tire on my ZX10R now and is also down with my knees (thanks for the tutorial MotoJitsu) and I wouldnt say thats reckless for streets. Why? Because the bike can still lean more even though im out riding on the edge. Yes i use all of the tire, but you can still lean more and use a smaller amount of the tire. I remember started out as riding 8 years ago on a suzuki SV650S with big chicken stripes. Back then my HUGE chickenstripes absolutely didnt prove i was aware of my limitation or I was a good driver. They proved that I was very uncomftable in corners. Therefore the name chickenstripes. I still believe that in 9/10 cases where two sportbikes are parked next to each other, the one with no chickenstripes is better in corners than the rider with a huge chickenstripe. Simple as that.

    My chicken strips get smaller when I practice in a parking lot,
    Then I go ride slowly round the mountains. I enjoy leaning the bike, thing is if I routinely lean it all the way to edge on the road, I got no more left for when I need it. JIK
    Ride your own ride and enjoy it.

    And them there is the extreme, my m8 bought a bike that was way too big and powerful for him, he went around the corners so slow the bike virtually had no lean at all lol, and then in a straight line would give it everything both acceleration and braking, his tyres were bald in the middle inch or 2 and brand new on the rest of the tyre, it made the bike really awkward to ride because the tyre was not nicely rounded but flat in middle so when I rode it I found it felt wobbly as you started and finished the lean but had great grip and handling once leant over onto the good part of tyre lol.
    His was a gpz900r and I had xv535 virago and we were well matched apart from motorway where he just disappeared doing 140mph plus whilst I was maxed out at around a ton.

    Great video. I think I have more strips now even though i am far better and faster rider than before. I believe there is a fourth important point that was not mentioned, and that's the tyre pressure. You can loose you strips pretty easy if your pressure is (too) low. Don't ask me how i know😂😅 Since pressure is lower, contact patch is bigger, but bike is a bit slower to turn and max lean angle is also lower..

    I think you said it long ago and not just you but anyone who's knowing what he is talking about, "the better rider is the one taking the same corner at same speed with LESS lean angle on the bike". The point on going fast on the bike is not to have MORE lean angle on the corner, but LESS lean angle while maintaining the same speed, as you said, moto GP or professional riders or even people on the track they have that extreme lean angle cause they are going as freaking fast as the bike can give on that corner so they MUST lean the thing at full. Less angle means less risk and a faster rolling at the exit, that's all. "less lean angle = faster stand up of the bike at exit = earlier rolling of the throttle = faster exit" hope i get that right X) haha

    So, "chicken strips" (to some) is the true gauge of rider ability (wrong). So is a "chicken cutlet" the huge flat spot you've created from a panicked, high speed, non-abs brake lockup? And when you dive into a corner at excessive speed, while desperately pushing the bike down, and perform the dreaded "bike and rider asphalt slide of doom", you are "the chicken that crossed the road" - because you are just a bad joke.👍

    • @richardlee2488
      @richardlee2488 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you need abs or traction control you will always be an amateur. The front brake is meant to be able to lift the back wheel of the black stuff in the right conditions. Then mid corner a little bit of broadside to kick you out of the bend on a straighter line.

    Regarding the comment about cruiser bikes having large chicken strips due to low ground clearance, I'm 62 and ride an old 2012 Nightrod in Malaysia with a 260 rear tire. I have scrubbed my rear tire sidewall to sidewall on every set of tires for the past 10 years and have only dragged a peg ot the very end of the pipe (aftermarket V&H) twice. Just thought I'd mention that.

  • @douglasreid699
    @douglasreid699 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Just because the tyre has tread there doesnt mean you have to use it (on the streets). Like some cars have traction control, i like to turn it off as i find it annoying but another driver might find it useful having a safety net.
    Id say if someone is at full lean using up there chicken strips and the other biker with them us 10seconds or less behind but has chicken strips, the biker behind is better and faster overall but more of a "man" to choose and decide how fast to go on the street.
    Any idiot can drive
    ide fast, only a professional can drive
    ide slow as they understand the bigger picture of riding on the street vs the track.

    I don’t give hoot about other peoples tires but the wear on my own tires gives me an indication of my safety margin, which on the street I want to maximize. On the track I’m using body position to reduce lean angle so if I’m on the extreme edge of the tire I’m risking my body and my bike. An injury would impact my job and other things I love to do and I can’t really afford to replace my bike.

    Look man I agree with some of the arguments you made but yes if you have rounded off edges on your tyres you are riding fast and who cares. But learning the limit of your bike is a must if you want to ride safely so chicken strip's or none if you are using your whole tyre you are more understanding of what your bike is capable of.
