Most likely it’s not the timing chain, normally you may get some other fault codes too if it’s from the timing chain itself (like P0014 or P0017 or misfire codes), if you get the code again after changing the oil, it is recommended to remove and clean the VVT solenoid valve on for bank 1 intake.

May i ask what would happen if we didnt change it directly in porsche caynne gts 2009 as here it cost too much money.. is ok to leave it as is for now ??
This code could happen for several causes as explained in the video. So, if it's coming from timing system it could be a serious fault that must be fixed ASAP. (Although some other cases could be fixed with less attention)
If code appears time to time it’s not from the timing chain itself, most likely it could be from a loose connection on intake VVT solenoid or Intake Cam sensor or Crank sensor. Oil sludge around the VVT solenoid can cause the same issue as well.
Correction: I understand that some CKP and CMP use 5V reference for the power source; you will not find 12V anywhere on these configurations. It is important to mention this, as viewers could incorrectly conclude that their PCM or electrical system has a fault that doesn't exist... I found a TH-cam that also said there are 12V, 5V, and 10V (sensor) systems out there. I have never seen a 10V reference, but I don't doubt it. [I have not Googled it to see what vehicles use that, but it would make sense. 9 or 10 volts would be stable as it is below the lowest 'variable' battery voltage that the system would see.] Consult you manual, or Google for your exact vehicle. If you get a consistent 5V that is within a few percent of 5.00V (or 10V), at several sensors in your car, then you should be safe to conclude that your car is using that voltage as power to it's sensors... Mr K L
Thanks for the comment and provided information. I always refer anyone to the workshop manual to review the specifications as not all cars are the same. But for the power source on CMP and CKP, I have seen both 5V and 12V power source and it depends if power supply is provided by ECM or Engine control relay. The latest one I remember was KIA Mohave 4.6 L, and all CMPs were getting the power supply from the engine control relay which was obviously battery voltage. But as you said, no one can consider one specific value for all different engine types as each ECM has been designed with a different software and logic which makes the configuration different.
@@AutomotiveDiagnosis Thank you kindly. And well produce video. I wanted it to show prominently, as some may not have access to a SM, or may go verbatim from the illustrations, if exceptions are not noted... @@troubleshooter1975 Thanks for sharing the situation. I have a 2012 Buick Verano. Engine check light came on and went to auto zone. First time code came up p0014 & p0015. So, had them give me both intake & exhaust solenoids. I put both in and next day took car out about 10 mins engine check light came back on. That afternoon went get oil changed and called auto zone told them what happened. The guy said bring it over. Sure enough same code came up again. This time got two new ones again and changed both. The engine light didn’t go out. Took the dam* car over auto zone and now dam* code showing p0016 & p0017. What the he**. The car runs great. No misfire, no ruff idling, I even replaced spark plugs. Can’t figure it out.
As you have fault codes for both intake and exhaust side, it could be coming from the timing chain or timing chain tensioner. Before that make sure to inspect the engine oil.
Sir please answer my question, or if anyone knows, my check engine lights is on and it saying that crankshaft position - camshaft position correlation bank 1 sensor A and bank 1 sensor b so what should I do , do I change just the sensors or both sensors and camshafts adjuster, mechanic told me to change camshafts adjuster so I'm confused what should i do my car is Benz c250 2012 please answer thanks.
Hi there, as I see, you have two fault codes for both intake and exhaust camshafts, normally having two components faulty at the same time is just odd, I just to remove the VVT solenoids first and clean them up before changing anything.
Thank you so much sir ❤❤❤. you mean that when both P0016 AND P0017 appear at the same time their is high Possibility of dirty vvt selonids. And one last question do benz car vvt selonids have to replace or I can just clean it and put it back . Thanks
I have the same code but it says “Crankshaft position-Camshaft position”, I have a 2016 Audi A4, the car starts fine, it drives fine, it has pretty much all it’s power available, it doesn’t smoke or consume oil, it doesn’t make any noises at all, but it idles weird when it’s completely stopped and it happens most of the time but ramdomly, it’s like a weird on and off vibration and what I noticed is that if I turn on the heater or A/C the problem almost goes away or it goes down a lot, no one has been able to find a solution for my problem
Hi there, it seems to be a different issue than P0016, this code might have happened due to an intermittent problem so please erase the code and see if it comes back up again. It it appears again and it happens randomly, it could be VVT solenoid valve (that must be removed and cleaned only). The problem that you explained it could be only for a dirty throttle body. So when engine idles and you have released the gas pedal, if throttle body is not clean, it can affect the airflow at idle, and the reason that it disappear when you turn the A/C ON, is because engine control module increases the engine RPM at that condition to compensate the A/C compression operation and RPM drop, so as soon as ECM increases the RPM, throttle body will open a little and there would be no more restriction for airflow.
What if you dont have battery voltage on the silinoids wire harness when the ignition is on? And, when you say ignition on, does the car have to be running?
Hi there, No, engine does not need to be running, normally you should have the battery voltage in one pin when ignition switch is on and also when engine is running. But if I don’t get the battery voltage on ignition on, I normally check it when engine is running as well, because not all cars are the same. Also, you will need to check the wiring for the power supply if there is any problem there. May I ask you please to write your car model down here?
I have a Toyota 2GR FE, it has 4 vvti solenoids but how many vvti filters are there? 1 filter for each bank =2 or 1 filter for each solenoid =4? Thanks!
I have a P0016 and P0019 code would that indicate the timing chain? I also got these codes after changing my oil, i took it the mechanic and he said i overfilled it or something but i found out it was my oil filter housing. Thanks
Hi there, if it happened just after the oil change, it’s probably not from the timing chain. These two codes are for bank 1 intake and bank 2 exhaust, so considering the fact that your engine is a V6 with two timing chains, if you had a timing problem, most likely you would have P0016 and P0017 together or P0018 and P0019 together. Having a wrong viscosity oil or dirty VVT solenoid can cause these faults too.
Hello, I have a kia forte 2019 with the same code p0017, it changes the timing chain, sprockets, oil pump, and it still does not start, and the code p0017 still appears
Hi mate, it should have hard starting because you have car sensor fault code, and as this signal is missing in ECM, you have to crank the engine for longer time so ECM can compensate it. You need to check the cam sensor on intake bank 1
This following video is for cam sensor diagnostic (not exactly for your car but can be useful): th-cam.com/video/fM40jUfPsRA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=xIbFQxGU2OGDHqyZ
There are different causes for this code as you see in the video, most of them will only affect the engine power, but if it’s from timing belt/chain, it’s better not to drive the car and have it checked as timing belt/chain failure may cause to engine mechanical issues.
@@AutomotiveDiagnosis do you excuse me, I’m genuinely grateful for you words on this it’s just I’m still not sure any of the points you covered in this video are the problem I have. I have a golf GTD 2018 with a 2.0TDI, it has done 56 thousand miles and has a timing belt. It has had it’s oiled changed last month, and it’s oil changes were always on time.
I have tried to explain all possible causes but generally most of the time VVT solenoid valve is the cause. I’ve had some cases on timing belt too though.
I have a 2016 kia sorento and on idle its normal when i drove 10 min it start no acceleration and when i turn off the car and turn it back on it going back to normal and i get the code p0016 , i change the pedal sensor , cam shaft sensor , crankshaft sensor . Manifold but still same thing 🥲
Hi there and thanks for sharing your experience. Most of the time if there is a major fault on the crankshaft position sensor, you will have another fault code for that sensor too, and you will have some other symptoms as well, like no starting or starting with a noticeable delay.
I have a dart 1.4 turbo that gets this code, it only pops up once the engine gets hot. It runs and drives normally at all times until I come to a stop with the engine hot. I can drive for hours without stopping and never get the code but as soon as I come to a complete stop I get it and then it goes into a limp mode where I can’t get to 4K RPMS and very underpowered. Once the code gets thrown it also has hiccup during idle every 5 seconds or so. Any ideas?
Hi, have you tried to check the VVT solenoid valve (intake)? If engine oil has been replaced on time, inspecting the solenoid valve is the first option as it gets blocked by the oil contamination.
@@AutomotiveDiagnosis my car has the multiair system, it has a multiair filter for the oil before it gets to the multiair brick. I changed out the filter, the old one looked perfectly fine too. I replaced the valve cover gasket at the same time and inside the engine looks immaculately clean. And yes ive done two oil changes in the past 1500 miles with correct oil and filters
Yeah, as you have both fault codes, it is less likely to have faulty VVT solenoids, just Cheng the oil and if you still have the codes, remove and clean the VVT solenoids.

Hi i got seat leon 1.4tsi got the p0016 code when i start the car it stalls when i start again the engine shaking and rough it lost power i think but it does drive just not as it should checked the vvt solenoid looks fine swaped camshaft sensor still nothing. Thank you
As your engine stalls, it might be from crank sensor or timing.
That's fine thank you for reply
Thanks ser

I have a 2012 dodge charger 5.7 and its reading to codes p000B and p0016 can tell me what that mite be
I substantially overfilled my engine oil when changing it on my own for the first time and now this error code has popped up. I've since corrected the amount of oil it but the code persists. What should I do now? It doesn't feel like it's driv8ng any different than it normally does
Have you tried removing the VVT solenoid valve? That might help. Remove and give it a good clean.
Especially cars like the 2010 -2016 Cadillac SRX these are direct injection engines and can build up sludge and carbon on the VALVES I suggest doing an engine flush I use motor medic by gunkout and marvel mystery oil or you can use Liqui Moly engine flush too pour in the product with the current oil still in it let it idle for about 15-20 minutes under its own power don’t horse the motor turn off engine let cool down remove drain plug let it do a complete drip drain wipe plug and pan area remove filter and replace you will surprised at the amount of crap that comes out

It was useful
Thanks 🙏
What happens if you get this error from time to time ? the check engine light comes on and goes off the next day. is it safe to keep driving the car ?
If code appears time to time it’s not from the timing chain itself, most likely it could be from a loose connection on intake VVT solenoid or Intake Cam sensor or Crank sensor. Oil sludge around the VVT solenoid can cause the same issue as well.
Correction:
I understand that some CKP and CMP use 5V reference for the power source; you will not find 12V anywhere on these configurations.
9 or 10 volts would be stable as it is below the lowest 'variable' battery voltage that the system would see.]
Consult you manual, or Google for your exact vehicle.
I am assisting a mechanic who came from another country (who watched your video), and he was stuck because he could not find 12V...
@@troubleshooter1975 Thanks for sharing the situation. That's exactly right, not having access to the SM and watching a video which is generally made (without referring to a specific model) may overwhelm someone, that's why I started making some videos, by mentioning the car model, and at the same time I show all the specifications in the SM including all values and configurations for that specific car, hoping to be more helpful.
Did you ever get the light to go off. Because I'm dealing with the same thing now.
Very nice
Thanks
I have a 2014 eco boost that has a p0016 and p0172. Makes a loud howling noise. What could that noise be ?
Hi there,
No, engine does not need to be running, normally you should have the battery voltage in one pin when ignition switch is on and also when engine is running. But if I don’t get the battery voltage on ignition on, I normally check it when engine is running as well, because not all cars are the same. Also, you will need to check the wiring for the power supply if there is any problem there. May I ask you please to write your car model down here?
Doesn't the ECM only send power to the VVT solenoid when the gas pedal is pressed?
oddly I put my old camshaft sensor back on, now the code has gone. not really sure why. have driven 100 miles so far and still no code
Hi my friend. Sometimes codes happen due to a bad connection on the connector or inside the connector on pins.
@@AutomotiveDiagnosis hope it was just that and it does n't come back before my MOT is due :)
UPDATE, it came back on after 3 days. took it back off twiddled it around a bit and it's gone off again (sigh)
@@AutomotiveDiagnosis thanks. Also what about P000B and P000C? I have these 2 codes as well but I’m not sure exactly what to do.
Hello, I have a kia forte 2019 with the same code p0017, it changes the timing chain, sprockets, oil pump, and it still does not start, and the code p0017 still appears

Hi i have porsche cayenne same code, (inteke camshaft senser bank1). this car have hard start please help me
Hi mate, it should have hard starting because you have car sensor fault code, and as this signal is missing in ECM, you have to crank the engine for longer time so ECM can compensate it. You need to check the cam sensor on intake bank 1
This following video is for cam sensor diagnostic (not exactly for your car but can be useful):

Is it safe to drive with p0016?
There are different causes for this code as you see in the video, most of them will only affect the engine power, but if it’s from timing belt/chain, it’s better not to drive the car and have it checked as timing belt/chain failure may cause to engine mechanical issues.

Hi there, I hope it’s helpful. What was your case?
Hi there, your cars is equipped with E-CVVT on intake camshaft, have you ever checked it?
For E-CVVT, you can check the power supply on the E-CVVT motor and also you can reset the E-CVVT with scan tool. It might work on your case.
Hi does anyone know where the ocv filter would be fitted on an Opel insignia with a A20NHT engine ?
I have a problem with code p1340
if r.p.m not move when you start car = crankshaft sensor is damage . result the engine not work
Hi there and thanks for sharing your experience.

P0016 just change the oil control valve... while there do a oil change also 1time...

P0016 p0017....Im pretty sure my oil need changed too
Yeah, as you have both fault codes, it is less likely to have faulty VVT solenoids, just Cheng the oil and if you still have the codes, remove and clean the VVT solenoids.
