I had the same struggles with a GL1500 but solved it slightly differently. I left the alternator in place but removing the starter motor is critical. Btw, you can’t replace the starter motor before putting the tank back, but I guess you figured that out already. I did everything with the bike stand in place, but removed the heat shield and chamber. The rest I dit the same as you. But still struggled to get the tank out. With a bit of force it finally moved out. Putting the tank back went pretty well though. Anyways, I did a lot more maintenance then planned. But doesn’t matter because better done (right) then do it again later. I started end of august last year and do only several hours per week so I’m still working on it. Just this weekend I put the fully cleaned and serviced carburetor back. Next weekend I’m going to see if everything still works. And then I still have to replace some fairing etc. Btw, it’s not my Goldwing. I only do this for fun and as a learning experience.
