    Hello @Crypto Guide. I Currently editing my token list to scramble the last 12 words in my seed phrase for 24 words seed recovery. Can you please tell me if I did this correct?
    1. in my token list I placed ^1^ word 1 etc. until word 12 in the positional and required anchors
    2. the remaining 12 words are scrambled and place on separate line
    now with the argument functions in python seed recovery do I change the "--mnemonic-length 12" to "--mnemonic-length 24" seeing that its a 24 word seed phrase or I do not change the length to match the amount of words? Thanks alot for your great help. You are number 1.

      Firstly, duplicate words are valid, so unless it says the seed is invalid, it might not have a problem. If it's just a single word, just run the defaults and it will find it very quickly, there is no point narrowing it down...

      @@CryptoGuide Thanks. I really appreciate your help. I ran the command with your example ETH wallet command and the BTC recover was able to give me the correct order for the wallet in your example. I then tried it on my own and was not successful. I wanted to test I was doing things correctly by creating a new ETH wallet with 12 words. I mixed up the order of the 12 words and ran the command.
      After 11 hours of running the command, I got the "Seed not found, sorry" message. I was thinking since I put in the address and had the correct words with an incorrect order that by running this "test" it would give me the correct order, but it did not work, so I am wondering if my command has some errors. They are just different ways of deliberately arranging the token list file so as to find it on the first seed generated or the last. (Given that you already know the correct order)

    Hi thanks for the informative video, in my infinite wisdom probably while drinking several beers I thought it would make sense to rearrange the words. Would it be possible to make a tool that checks in a grid like fasion left to right up and down, I know my first word or possible a word that fits in somewhere else in the grid randomly other than that it will read left to right and then go up or down or top to bottom left to right this would make it simpler to solve a 24 seed phrase in my case is something like that possible?

    • @CryptoGuide
      @CryptoGuide  ปีที่แล้ว

      What does this even mean? Are you saying that you arranged the words in some specific pattern?
      Basically the math means that descrambling a 24 word seed is impractical unless you have some idea what you did so as to dramatically narrow the search.

    • @Dougie1664
      @Dougie1664 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CryptoGuide well I would have most likely worked left to right or right to left in the grid so it can try less combinations if assumed that certain words should follow others and randomly place a marked word in between the rest of the words, as I left certain clues. BTCRecover does support the old electrum 1 wordlist for both 12 and 13 word seeds. (Yes, they were 13 words long at one point) You don't need to worry about specifying a derivation path for Electrum 1 wallets, as Electrum wallets only use one of two possible derivation paths. (And the 2nd only became relevant recently with segwit wallets)

      BTCRecover now has GPU acceleration for more wallets than before, so you can use a GPU to speed up descrambling to be able to do things like a 12 word seed in one hour as opposed to ~5.
      Descrambling longer seeds, especially 24 word ones is still impractical.

    Great video! What happens if you don't know or don't remember the blockchain address of the wallet and the words are scrambled? Will BTCRecover still be able to recover it? - the reason I ask this is because I swap the order of some words before safely storing my seed phrase, as one dumb layer of protection. Is it likely that someone finding just the piece of paper with the 12 words will be able to sort the words correctly even without knowing any wallet address?

    • @CryptoGuide
      @CryptoGuide  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can just use an AddressDB if you don't know the address, it's no problem at all. Any 12 word seed will descramble just fine.

      It would take about 533531 days to descramble 18 words... The realistic limit to descrambling a seed is 15 words which would take three months. (12 words takes an hour) It's worth holding on to the seed as you only need 2000x speed boost to make this do-able, something which might occur at some point in the next few decades years. (A high end 64 core CPU can already do it about 30x faster, or see this: medium.com/@johncantrell97/how-i-checked-over-1-trillion-mnemonics-in-30-hours-to-win-a-bitcoin-635fe051a752)

      Just go with one of the Bitcoin BIP39 examples and substitute the address for your address and the seed words in the tokenlist for your seed words. (And also increase the address generation limit if the address you are using isn't the first address)
      It's possible that there are also other issues with your seed, so if you are stuck, generate a test wallet first and test with that to make sure you are doing it all correctly.

      Ah riteo, it's just the same as a normal descrambling in terms of the tokenlist, but will need to run for a month or two.
      Your best bet is to just make a test wallet, add another BIP39 word (so that you have 13) and then get everything working with that. Once that is sorted, you can try it with your real seed.

    any way to optimize the --seedlist option? I was trying to descramble with extra words and I thought why not just create a file with only valid seed phrases, thinking it would take less time considering 29 million and 479 are far apart. It's painfully slow on my mac. Any pointers or tips to speed up that process? A new computer? gpu or cpu power? etc... thank you!

    • @CryptoGuide
      @CryptoGuide  ปีที่แล้ว

      Basically you are likely just hitting a bottleneck due to your CPU. BTCRecover already skips hashing seeds without a valid checksum , so gets a large speed boost due to this, whereas your approach of manually thinning them out means that it needs to hash every one. (Meaning that you would see your raw performance which is likely under 5,000kp/s)
      It shouldn't matter either way, as just letting BTCRecover run with its defaults will only needs hours on any modern CPU. (So you likely spent more time working on your seed list than it would have taken if you just left it)

    • @CryptoGuide
      @CryptoGuide  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So if I understand if correctly you have an Electrum seed with a long "extra words" passphrase? In that case, probably not. If you do the math the possibilities for the seed part multiplied by the possible passphrases gives you a search space that is very very large. You need up narrow down your list or at least the number of words in unknown positions for the passphrase part.
      Did you deposit any funds in to the raw seed without extra words? (To all least narrow down the search space by a factor of 400,000,000)

    • @CryptoGuide

      The "extension words" are just handled like a BIP39 passphrase. While you can run seedrecover.py with a list of passphrases (--passphrase-list argument) you will not have any luck as the pure math of your sitation puts it in the unrecoverable situation.
      GPU acceleration for checking large numbers of passphrases will come in the next few weeks, but unless you can narrow your possibilities right down, or at least solve the seed part first on it's own. (eg: having some funds that were deposited without extension words) then you are not going to be able to recover this...

    • @CryptoGuide
      @CryptoGuide  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's certainly possible, but the software might need a small modification to make it work.
      Basically BTCRecover can work with any address that was produced with a wallet that follows standard BIP39/44 address derivation. Basically what you will need is a derivation path that these sorts of wallets (like Coinomi, etc) use so that you can go from seed -> address.
      The issue is that some of these minor alt-coins don't follow the standards and it looks like ADA falls in to this category. (based on this: docs.cardano.org/cardano-components/cardano-wallet/doc/about-address-derivation)
      So the bad news is that it looks like it won't work at this time, the good news is that it is probably quite straight-forward if someone from the ADA community wanted to create a pull request on the project Github that would enable ADA users to recover in situations like this. (over at github.com/3rdIteration/btcrecover) For someone familiar with Cardano derivation and python 3 it would be a few hours work tops...
      Once the ability to use this non-standard derivation is added, it can brute-force descramble any 12 word seed in about an hour.

    1) What information do you need to recover a scrambled 12 word seedphrase? Only the 12 words? I guess you need the adress too, right?
    2) It seems like you also need to know what blockchain you are using, is that correct?
    3) Does it also work for a hardware device? Since often you have multiple coins on it if you get your whole hardware device back or only the used adress (in case you have to use one)?
    4) How can you find out the correct one? Is it because you use the adress in combination with the 12 words?
    I mean there sure is more than one seed with these 12 words just in different order, no?

      You can do this with a tokenlist, whether it is possible comes down to the math of it... You will basically need to work out how many possible combinations there are that you need to check and if you end up with a number less than 100 billion then it's do-able in a reasonable timeframe.

I added --passphrase to the script, now, when executing the script, I need to enter a passphrase that I know and it is true, it is comparing 2 words out of 12 and still cannot find the correct combination.
