Demolition Man was blatant with the Taco Bell advertising but they could get away with it because it was completely acceptable as part of their comically dystopian worldbuilding.
I let it slide because it was played for laughs and successfully so. Product placement is not inherently bad, it's only bad if it distracts from the film or feels out of place. The Taco Bell thing was not clumsy, it fit perfectly with the future parody tone of the movie

Calling Simon Phonix as "just one gangster" is a bit of an understatement, the implication is the he *is* the reason why LA was such a criminal hellhole in 1996, if I recall correctly its stated in the intro scene that he united all the gangs into an army and took over part of the city. Him being a ridiculously over-the-top supervillain is what makes the short time span for societal shift to sorta work, as the people would be sick and scared of that much mayhem and accepting of anybody promising to fix society so that it would never happen again.
True, not to mention the fact that while Simon was frozen his brain was fed advanced training in hacking, terrorism and undoubtedly all matters martial, essentially turning him into a specialist in toppling societies and creating mayhem, while Mr. Man was brainwashed into being an avid knitter. Furthermore perhaps the population at large, apart from some individuals who later formed the rebelling faction, also received similar brainwashing to make them more receptive to the society Cocteau built? This movie would definitely have benefited from an extra 10-15 minutes of worldbuilding.
Stalone was tricked into "stop or my mom will shoot" Him and Arnie were in a rivalry and Arnie "leaked" he was gonna star in it, so Stallone did the film. And he hated Arnie for it

If this review had come out this year, I'm sure that the comments would be filled to the brim with snide remarks and emotive tirades about "wokism". But that's not what's being depicted in Demolition Man. What's being depicted is an authoritarian means of controlling the minds, thoughts and actions of society. It's not any different in its fundamental reasoning than the doublespeak, double think and Newspeak depicted in Nineteen Eighty-Four. And the motivation behind it has absolutely nothing to do with any current concept of political correctness let alone "wokism". In fact it's much closer to where the term political correctness came from, which was describing how authoritarian regimes, such as in the old USSR, Cultural Revolution China and Red Scare period America would police the citizenry for "thought crimes" against the approved political dogma of the government. Political correctness in the context of Demolition Man is just another way to achieve the same end while also convincing the citizenry that they are not oppressed. It is similar to how Fahrenheit 451 describes the gradual slide of its society into authoritarian oppression. The government preyed upon a citizenry that was anxious, angry, afraid and confused about the constant tension of an informational, intersectional, pluralist and multicultural world. In other words, there was a "culture war" and the government capitalised and leveraged those fears and attitudes to exert control over society to its own ends. In the case of Fahrenheit 451, it was through a similar outcome as Demolition Man, but ultimately it was indistinguishable from typical fascism.

The time period thing is something that always bothered me about Fallout 2. You play the Vault Dweller's grandkid but are from a totally tribal society that was founded by people from Vault 13. So in 80 years they went from technologically advanced to believing in spirits and whatnot. Like the Village Elder and Hakunin are only one generation removed from the original founders but are super weird and superstitious.
So Rich's go-to example of product placement is the raisin bench in Back to the Future... Apparently he didn't notice the more obvious stuff like Calvin Klein, Pepsi Free, Tab, or I don't know, a time machine made out of a fucking Delorean?!
It is sci fi. It is social commentary on the future. And the fact that it is so quotable means the writers or ad libbing actors really hit their lines.
Love this movie. Super fun, cool premise and an awesome world that it takes place in. It's even better if you don't get insanely hung up on the time scaling...
For all it's blemishes, I still love Demolition Man. I've always found it very quotable and my best friend and I still drop some of those lines towards each other to this day. Judge Dredd on the other hand.... well, it at least got a pretty good video game tie-in on the Genesis. I think more than anything, what I appreciated the most about Judge Dredd was the production/prop/wardrobe design. If they had taken all that and applied to an accurate depiction of the character, it at least would have gained a cult following.

The product placement in Back to the Future was so blatant, I don't see how Demolition Man could be the movie that made people notice it. Way too much Pepsi all over the Back to the Future movies.
The thing is, Demolition Man might have even predicted the whole "commercials as music/entertainment" thing. Half the people that watch the Super Bowl these days pay more attention to the commercials. Vaporwave has made its way into the cultural lexicon. Over the course of the last 20 years especially, companies have made concerted efforts to promote entertainment as branding, and I would bet that you'd be more likely to hear a random person humming the Nationwide jingle than the #1 song on the Billboard Hot 100.
The reason why they didn't place it further into the future is because they originally had a plot line where it turned out that Sandra Bullock was his daughter. They had a few scenes left over from that plot, and you can really tell by the way Sandra Bullock plays their relationship and acts with him. I can't remember why they took it out, I think the studio insisted that there be a love interest thing or something like that, so they shoehorned in a random throwaway character that became his daughter instead (in the attack underground in the Dennis Leary place you see Stallone randomly protecting some woman, who is the daughter), but I don't think ever even mention it really, and that plot line just sort of gets abandoned There may have been more to it, this is just what I remember, but if someone is interested I'll track down the story and give you the full details
I just clicked on the video and I haven't watched it yet. I just wanted to say before I hear anyone else's opinion, this is one of my favorite movies, ever. I watched it so many times as a young kid with my dad in the mid and late 90's. I downloaded the best version I could find recently, and I watched it again. It was still perfect. Perfect for exactly what it is. It's a very fun and clever action movie with lots of humor and sarcasm. Wesley snipes is so bad ass in this. This might be my favorite movie with Sandra Bullock and it's definitely my favorite Stallone movie. He's got a lot of great ones, but this is my personal favorite, and not only for sentimental or nostalgic reasons, but just because it's a really fun ride. Idk why, but I just had to say all that first.
As a Brit who saw it on release, the Pizza Hut placement definitely didn't work as advertising. It was more like social commentary on how imported fake food franchise empires would take over the world.
I love that ad jingles are popular oldie music in that world.. and in reality we have Vaporwave music, who remixes old 80s ads into some weird electronic synth music :D

I don't agree that the change couldn't happen in 30 years.. i've seen it myself in less than 30 years in Sweden. Our government and head of police thinks you can defeat crime by giving out wrist bands that says "don't rape". They think you can make crime go down by "talking nice" to criminals, giving them treats, pretending to be their "buddies". I can give tons of examples. It's lunacy. Society as a whole is in many cases like a Monty Python sketch, but more over-the-top stupid, and very few eves sees it because they've been brainwashed, they think its normal that wearing wrist bands to fight rape is the right direction..
Loved the re:View, but isn't McDonald's tanking a lot? I thought they were slowly being pushed out by other franchises, because they're unable to come up with anything new. It's only superficially like Minority Report in that they kind of predict crimes, while Demolition Man has a surprisingly similar setting full of people that can't deal with stress or violence.

Rich is taking this movie way to seriously. I know he wants it to be a serious Sci-fi movie, but it's not. It's a cheesy action movie.
It is sci fi. It is social commentary on the future. And the fact that it is so quotable means the writers or ad libbing actors really hit their lines.

I think the earliest product placement was Superman 2 (original 1981?) - Superman crashed into a Marlboro truck and there were M/B posters everywhere.
Love this movie. Super fun, cool premise and an awesome world that it takes place in. It's even better if you don't get insanely hung up on the time scaling...

For all it's blemishes, I still love Demolition Man. I've always found it very quotable and my best friend and I still drop some of those lines towards each other to this day. Judge Dredd on the other hand.... well, it at least got a pretty good video game tie-in on the Genesis. I think more than anything, what I appreciated the most about Judge Dredd was the production/prop/wardrobe design. If they had taken all that and applied to an accurate depiction of the character, it at least would have gained a cult following.

Coca Cola in Bonnie and Clyde was the earliest product placement I can remember. And before Back to The Future there was the classic American family film Mac and Me.

The product placement in Back to the Future was so blatant, I don't see how Demolition Man could be the movie that made people notice it. Way too much Pepsi all over the Back to the Future movies.

I just saw an ad for a new Death Wish remake featuring Bruce Willis on this video.
The thing is, Demolition Man might have even predicted the whole "commercials as music/entertainment" thing. Half the people that watch the Super Bowl these days pay more attention to the commercials. Vaporwave has made its way into the cultural lexicon. Over the course of the last 20 years especially, companies have made concerted efforts to promote entertainment as branding, and I would bet that you'd be more likely to hear a random person humming the Nationwide jingle than the #1 song on the Billboard Hot 100.

The reason why they didn't place it further into the future is because they originally had a plot line where it turned out that Sandra Bullock was his daughter.
They had a few scenes left over from that plot, and you can really tell by the way Sandra Bullock plays their relationship and acts with him. I can't remember why they took it out, I think the studio insisted that there be a love interest thing or something like that, so they shoehorned in a random throwaway character that became his daughter instead (in the attack underground in the Dennis Leary place you see Stallone randomly protecting some woman, who is the daughter), but I don't think ever even mention it really, and that plot line just sort of gets abandoned
There may have been more to it, this is just what I remember, but if someone is interested I'll track down the story and give you the full details

I just clicked on the video and I haven't watched it yet. I just wanted to say before I hear anyone else's opinion, this is one of my favorite movies, ever. I watched it so many times as a young kid with my dad in the mid and late 90's. I downloaded the best version I could find recently, and I watched it again. It was still perfect. Perfect for exactly what it is. It's a very fun and clever action movie with lots of humor and sarcasm. Wesley snipes is so bad ass in this. This might be my favorite movie with Sandra Bullock and it's definitely my favorite Stallone movie. He's got a lot of great ones, but this is my personal favorite, and not only for sentimental or nostalgic reasons, but just because it's a really fun ride.

As a Brit who saw it on release, the Pizza Hut placement definitely didn't work as advertising. It was more like social commentary on how imported fake food franchise empires would take over the world.
I love that ad jingles are popular oldie music in that world.. and in reality we have Vaporwave music, who remixes old 80s ads into some weird electronic synth music :D
Guys the movie was a massive success. Low point? This movie was an event film. It was huge.

I'm surprised that guys didn't mention Total Recall, as I always thought this was Stallone's fairly blunt response to an Arnie classic.

I don't agree that the change couldn't happen in 30 years.. i've seen it myself in less than 30 years in Sweden. Our government and head of police thinks you can defeat crime by giving out wrist bands that says "don't rape". They think you can make crime go down by "talking nice" to criminals, giving them treats, pretending to be their "buddies". I can give tons of examples. It's lunacy. Society as a whole is in many cases like a Monty Python sketch, but more over-the-top stupid, and very few eves sees it because they've been brainwashed, they think its normal that wearing wrist bands to fight rape is the right direction..
This is just Calabasas and Malibu, even have the electric cars.

Eh, either way I think the product placement worked in such a zany way, establishing itself well with the sheer insanity of LA effectively being terraformed into a hospitable environment in just a few decades.

Great movie. I think the reason for the short time skip was the daughter plot line, which eventually goes absolutely nowhere (other than making everyone in the audience slightly worried it might be Sandra Bullock)

Taco Bell is one of the few Mexican fast food restaurants. It would survive the fast food wars.
When it was first released in the UK it was taco bell, but I think they re-dubbed it to Pizza Hut later on when they released later versions of the video / DVD I think

Dillon Green I feel like psycho pass was more like minority report, but yes, psycho pass is amazing.
I probably shouldn't be commenting on such and old comment, but anyway.... I think Psycho Pass was a lot more like this. It's only superficially like Minority Report in that they kind of predict crimes, while Demolition Man has a surprisingly similar setting full of people that can't deal with stress or violence.
