Thomas Pridgen (The Mars Volta, The Memorials) was joined by special guests Thundercat and Dennis Hamm for an unforgettable live performance and interview. Here is a quick glimpse at some of the awe-inspiring musicianship that was on display by this electrifying group.
This guy is a brutal display of power, strenght, endurance and accuracy with a whole understanding of what subdivisions are and a quite fit tempo. Simply brutal playing.
Mad respect to the bass player for keeping the pulse on lock.
"the bass player" lmao its thundercat bro
@@12345brick1 STILL a bass player!
that keyboard is the one actually keeping it on lock while thundercat shreds, listen closely, he's holding a bassline on keys most of the time, and soloing himself.
Lmao nice one
All this awesomeness in the same room is actually hard for me to digest
Pridgen is by all means my favorite drummer. I never get tired of listening to his stuff
This is just ridiculous, Thomas Pridgen continues to blow my mind.
I saw him a few times with Mars Volta. In my Top 5
Never uses double bass
Sonny Liston You act like using double bass is bad.
Not a bad thing at all. Just sounds as he is at times
Sonny Liston Yeah, I just get annoyed when people think double bass is cheating. It can be used to cheat, but in the proper drummers hands (or feet I guess) you can do so much more! I learned heel-toe, and slide, with a single pedal before moving to a double. And I think that is a necessary step for sure! Once you master a single, and then you move to a double, you just have to train up your week foot, and then you're a monster!
I would never dis on anyone who plays a musical instrument. I don't know your age, what types of music you appreciate, how many shows you have been to, and this may have nothing to do with nothing, but in the 60's and early '70's most drummers didn't even think of the concept of double bass. The first I saw was local Detroit Bob Seger Sound System. Pep Perin had double on the floor, and 2 more he rigged up he would hit with sticks that funneled out that were about 6 feet off the ground. Very innovative for its time.

And he's a Raiders fan too. Love watching this guy play! !
Unbelievable!!!!!!!
Thomas is so inspiring to view to see what is possible with doing what one love's doing ! One Beautiful Man in Drumming , You Dig ...
Very good, I love it. Thomas is amazing.
I don't know how to comprehend what I just saw and heard.
they’re jamming on the thundercat tune fleer ultra if anyone is wondering
Love it great job to T.pridgen and the band wow.
Thundercat out of nowhere!!
OMG! DrumChannel posting something free!!!
Children of Fusion. The genre didn't die, despite the industry's best attempts to do so. Good...
true. i still hear it all the time in many new prog rock/metal bands that are active these days.
its like buddy rich on funk. love pridgen!
Those drums are badass!!!
Pridgen's style seems even more aggressive this year. fucking yes
Drumming at its best.
Thundercat and Thomas are always a gnarly lot
dude is a beast always
That's the amazinges druming ever!
Thomas is the best!
This is a 4/4 time signature. Nicely done
Absolutely perfect 🥴👏🏾
3:50 Why does Thundercat play so well? Because he eats healthy.
somuchmusic19 Lmaoooo
pridgen is the mike tyson of drumming. jfgdccccc
this sound good
Wow!
Q sonzera eita pegaaaa 🎶🥁
Good Lawd! Controlled caos! Wow!
das beautiful
i think pridgen is left handed, which makes this so much cooler.
He is left handed ;)
In what way is he left handed? You mean in life? (i.e. writes with his left hand)
yes
I don't think it makes it cooler. I'm leftie too, and all the instruments I play (bass, drums and guitar), I play right handed. It's not weird or something :D
you have to appreciate forcing your weaker hand (in your case, right) to take the lead on instruments. it's very impressive.
Haha I see what they did there... wrote the last 8 bars of music to be a tight ending and the rest was a jam fest. Beautifully done.
4:53. Thundercat finally gets a look in and kills it!
So excited to see Thundercat working with Kimbra on her next album!
I was there as a live audience that day
This is NUTS :-)
daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaang!
Need to know what that cymbal stack is. Perfect sound. I think I see a Pitch Black??
Thomas Pridgen (The Mars Volta, The Memorials) was joined by special guests Thundercat and Dennis Hamm for an unforgettable live performance.
The best technique
Dope
muy bueno!!
His drumkit is interesting. Looks like Pacific Concept lugs but with Die Cast hoops and DW Bass Drum/Tom mounts. Any history on the kit?
It's made by a company called Thump drums. the company was started when the founder started experimented with making drums out of the fiberglass he used to make surfboards. he has made drums for Zach Hill, Eric Moore, and many others.
Is it my imagination or is Thomas playing PDP drums?
Those lugs are NOT DW at all.
I know he’s endorsed by DW and they make PDP as well.
I’ve never seen him play much other than DW though.
Any ideas?
I think those are PDP lugs. With die cast hoops. Obviously not a stock finish. I remember he was using some crazy custom company’s drums or snares right at the same time he was using DW in the TMV days. Or right after. It was like a Jamaican colored kit.
super
The only thing more impressive than the music is that some people actually gave this a thumbs down.
Fuck yeah!
The jams
REALLY surprised he's playing on Evans HYDRAULICS lol
😮
that hi-hat tho!
SO BIG
he kinda looks like a black taylor hawkins, awesome drummer btw!
Hydraulic heads! AH!! They used to sound cool in the 80s I guess.(Neil Peart, etc..) I don't know if they're made differently now but I bought some a few years back and just like this jam here, COULDN"T HEAR A FUCKIN' THING!! Took 'em off and got rid of 'em!
Coo
savagest drummer ever.
whats kind of cymbal stack to the right does thomas use?
Is Thomas using a tom drumhead for a snare drum head?
He is, I've heard him address his choice in snare heads before but i cant remember the reasoning behind it. Something about it being louder i think?
Bryan Ayers i've read somewhere that he doesn't need coated head 'cause he doesn't play with brushes ... pd: excuse me for my bad grammar, english isn't my primary language.
because of the lug placement i would have to go with a no, just a clear head which previously stated is a louder choice from coated.
Where's the cobus meytal and Luke video
Thomas´ hippest kit...
00:50 Poland
is that set a PDP Concept? with die cast hoops?
I don't know this is weird... Lugs look like PDP Concept... Even if there is a DW logo on the front head and die cast hoops :/
No, they are custom shells by Thump Drums with DW and PDP hardware put on them. Should really check Thump out, it's just one guy, but he makes KILLER drums!
what would be the name of the first song?
fleer ultra
Candombe??
I did not know he can wear shirt
What size is the High Hat Cymbals?
looks bigger than 15in Nice
I think he used two 20" crash cymbals
A drum off between Mike Portnoy,, and Thomas ....who do you think is better ??
What heads are those?
look like hydraulics
hydraulic blues on the toms. Maybe a glass on the snare.
Gavin Oswald they don't make glass snare drum heads man, too dangerous.
eternallyminded7 lol good one
WHO IS BETTER AT DRUMMING THOMAS PRIDGEN OR TONY ROYSTER JR?
Deantoni parks
meg white is the best drummer ever
Lars Ulrich.
Zach Hanson
They have totally different styles, both good. Pridgen has a bigger following tho
what time signature is this in lol
pretty sure it's just 4/4
What tom heads a
Mah nigga
Great drumming and guitar playing .... shame about the nasty sounding synthesizer.
Those hi hats seem massive to me.... No way they are 14's, right?
More like a 16 or prob 18 lol
I found the sound quality so bad about the drums... We can't differenciate any toms nor hear the bass drum !
wear some good quality headphones. it'll make the difference
Jeffrey McClelland still the bass is very soft, even the ghost notes are louder
Yea I have a pair of Bose headphones now listening and I agree with the above comment 100%. I can hear each tone on each individual tom
Man, I feel bad, but Pridgen does does not move me. I have watched enough of his stuff now to realize that he just is a monotone drummer, it's all the same. I would love to hear him just groove, show some finesse,
I thought it was just my dislike of gospel drumming but Chris and Aaron move me deeply. I just don't know!
+Matthew Gonano OK, I got the album.
Deantoni parks is better
Have you listened to the album he did with Christian Scott? He overplays on some parts, but he mostly plays tastefully on that album. I actually think he grooves quite well, he just gets so caught up in the music and ends up playing too much
WHAT THE FUCK
I'd like to see Pridgen go beyond this standard sound that all these drummers tend to fall into. Why why why? These musicians are so capable of pushing boundaries but settle for such cheesy music... SIGH
Listen to some Mars volta guaranteed that work with pridgen will blow your mind
White boy's like, wtf do i do...
Get that awful Yamaha synth out of there.
terrible sound engineering.
I dont like how he changes this 4/4 beat while soloing. Sort of rude drumming and some approximation.
He is a "gospel Chop" drummer the change of time signature is derived from his style of playing, also this is his show, his endorsement his way of playing.
I know, but many of his thoughts are just about being pretty loud and noisy, I personally prefer more 'constructive' Royster / Guidry style.
True I agree but their is a time a purpose for everything and I think his stype fits nicely with the music he plays. I appreciate your comment though and agree.
IICAPTN From 3:18 he accelerates the tempo, which is not so good for the bassist he plays with. But yeah, I agree too, that is his style.
Thomas pridgen's style is one really like no other..so I'd appreciate that you get to hear someone like this play drums if I were you. Not bashing your comment just sayin style is different for everyone. Royster is another example of unheard of drumming! These guys just are an eargasm when listening to
Trying times
Every drummer has his own style and voice. But the day that Thomas discover that music also has silences and dynamics and it is not just playing as fast and loud as possible all the time, maybe he will stop being a great drummer and become a great musician. Like Vinnie, Weckl, Dennis and others...Just my opinion
What a horrible bass guitar sound is that! It doens't even sound like it. Luckily Pridgen is beast.
super
