    Break a not “full” shulker box by using the input hopper. If you detect when the input hopper fills up you know there are no more empty slots in the shulker. Just a suggestion;). Love the content!

      I came here to suggest the same thing, alas you did it first (and probably worded it a little better than I would have...). Great video as always! I've been playing since 1.15, and although I consider myself somewhat descent technically, I keep finding little tips and tricks I didn't know in this series...

      @@aircobraman1375 The status of a hopper can be read by a comparator facing away from it. It outputs 1 for a non-full stack and 3 for a full stack or an unstackable item in the hopper. Thus, a completely full hopper puts out a signal of 15.

    • @alexeschen1849
      @alexeschen1849 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@peterschulze4975 correct. But the same issue of mixed items not completely filling the shulker applies to the hopper as well. Have to use an observer to detect the pulse from the comparator as the items flow through it. Then a cooldown clock to an inverted redstone torch to trigger the break and replace circuit. There are tons of videos for “mixed shulker loaders”. Just looked it up. Ilmango’ is the best as usual…. Which reminded me that it’s the container on the input hopper (which can not be the main input container of the system) is a great spot to use the comparator. The item flow doesn’t register in the container above a hopper when feed by another hopper. So as soon as a signal of lvl 1 is read from the comparator you know the shulker and the hopper have no space. And can hook that directly to the break/replace circuit.

  • @TheRealWormbo
    @TheRealWormbo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +37

    A word of warning on shulker box loaders and unloaders: Item entities, such as the broken box, will usually not move too much, but math for that works in strange ways and items can sometimes "jump" up a lot more than usual, or have an unusually high sideways momentum. If you are loading with a hopper from above, breaking the box may cause it to glitch out and land on top of the newly dispensed box, out of reach of any hoppers. Similarly, I can imagine the unloader shown first to have the box glitch out sideways onto the comparator, again, only in very rare cases.
    These issues stem from the 1.13 hopper collision box update, and the 1.15 item physics changes. You will find that box loaders and unloaders from before those versions may still function, but they must be considered unreliable in terms of their box collection functionality, if they use a hopper pointing into the box from above.
    For any more interested players, shulkerbox loading and unloading are part of the field of "storage tech", which is its own subcategory of technical Minecraft, and there are many sophisticated contraptions that focus on individual aspects for storing items, such as handling sorted boxes, making sorter contraptions compact (e.g. so they can use or replace 1-wide tileable item filters), and many other things.

    • @Pixlriffs
      @Pixlriffs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      Excellent points. We can work around the “box jumps onto comparator” issue by having the comparator read the shulker box’s contents through a solid block, but it increases the size of the redstone circuit a little. 🙂

    • @TheRealWormbo
      @TheRealWormbo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Pixlriffs Another possible solution could be putting the comparator onto the collection hopper for the boxes. Of course that would require routing the signal output to the dispenser and breaking piston in a different way. But I guess that's part of the fun with solving redstone-related problems. :)

    • @atifashhabatif8391
      @atifashhabatif8391 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The best solution I think would be to let the comparator read the container signal through a block. That might solve it.

    In 1.19, only Wool Blocks and Carpets will silence Noteblocks, according to the Snapshots. While it works for now, it may break until you replace the Wood Block with Wool or Carpet then.

When I first started watching the Survival guide back in 2020, the most complicated thing I could make was a simple auto-smelter with a furnace and some hoppers. Now I make big complicated machines that make my server mates nervous, lol. What I love is that no matter how much redstone knowledge I think I have, there are always new tricks to learn, like pushing the shulker into a second hopper... I always just had the empty shulkers go into the overflow at the end of the line

    08:47 - the dispenser only places the shulker box upwards if there is a non air block below it. If not, the dispenser places the shulker box in the same direction where the dispenser is directed at
    In this case you still cannot do something about it because you need to have the hopper below though
    But get rid of the slab at 17:49 above the hopper and you will see what i mean

    The reason you cannot hopper into an Ender Chest is because the contents are a part of the player's inventory that can only be accessed via the Ender Chest (which is how the Ender Chest automatically shows the contents that belong to the player that opens it).

    I am a looooooong way off needing this in single player survival (maybe useful in multiplayer) but this video just reminded me I need to set up a wool farm. Back to the earlier videos I go! Lets hope this one isn't as difficult as the iron farm one lol.

    • @peterschulze4975

      You won't even need a wool-farm so much. I've got a sheep of each color running around in a pen in single player, and shear them manually from time to time. That's enough wool for my everyday needs. But once, I accidentally burned down a woodland manison nearly completely and rebuilt it. To replace all the carpets a wool farm for red and white wool was convenient.

    A few notes from a technical player:
    -Dispensers actually can place shulker boxes that open in any orientation, but they will always place them opening upward if there is a non-air block below where the box is placed. This may actually be a bug, it's not entirely clear, but it's been this way since shulker boxes were introduced and is relied on for some contraptions. I think it's different on Bedrock, but I'm a Java player so I'm not certain.
    -The reason broken empty boxes in your unloader end up in the correct hopper is because the breaking sequence takes 6 game ticks, so the hopper below the box is still in it's 8gt cooldown from draining the last item and can't pick up anything else yet. If you had more delay in the breaking sequence, the hopper below the box would pick it up, though this can be avoided by briefly powering that hopper.
    -Your unloader cannot handle empty boxes or boxes with one item, since the comparator that reads the contents will never turn on as either there are no items to detect or the single item drains instantly when the box is dispensed before the comparator can react. The box will never be broken and will have to be removed manually before you can continue to use the unloader. I realize this is easy for the player to fix if it happens in your particular use case but it's worth noting the limitations as it does matter sometimes. There are designs that can handle these cases without being much larger, and even auto-dispense the first box.
    -It is actually possible to make a fully automated box loader that can handle mixed items with varying stack sizes. Basically, instead of reading from the box with a comparator, you instead detect when items are no longer able to be put into the box. Though I do think your manual system is fine for your use case.
    -As TheRealWormbo's comment details, the hopper hitbox and random item momentum make it tricky to reliably collect the broken shulker box 100% of the time. Closing that gap from mostly reliable to perfectly reliable is tricky but doable and there are existing designs for many different use cases.

    Nice video, pix! I wanted to say that I think you should do a guide on redstone components like comparators, observers, target blocks etc. Because many people want to join the technical minecraft community and amaze people with their contraptions, but they can't because they don't know how complex redstone components work.

  • @emmdeekaysays173
    @emmdeekaysays173 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I haven't built any shulker box loaders or unloaders, but gears turning, I think you could detect when your input chest/hopper was empty on your loader, and then that could break the Shulker without it completely filling up, if say you wanted it to automatically go into a rail system and be dropped off to be unloaded.

    Filling and emptying shulker boxes is quite interesting, but I never have built/farmed so massive things in my worlds, that I would have needed an automatic sorting-/packing- system. The only stuff, that I get a lot of in survival is stone, dirt and wood. There, a handful shulker boxes would be handy, but in my recent world, I haven't yet made it to the end.
    I tried out a sorting system once in creative just to see and understand how it works, but never needed one in survival. The few mob farms I've built so far in survival, didn't yield so much stuff, that I needed excess storage for them.

      Java Edition lacks those features because it’s not designed to be an educational tool

      It’s a good microphone, and I add a little audio compression when I edit the video.
      But people often overestimate how much the microphone matters! Mumbling into a good microphone is still going to sound like mumbling. It’s important to develop your own presentational style and keep your vocal energy at the right level for the video.

    For the shulker loading... couldn't you just check whether the hopper feeding the Box outputs a signal stronger than a non-stackable?

    • @peterschulze4975
      @peterschulze4975 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A non-stackable item outputs a signal strenghth of 3, if you measure the hopper. It could be, for example, 2 non-stackable items stuck in the hopper and a bunch of stackables still filtering through into the shulker box. Then, the signal would be 7 or higher and the box still not full. Not really sure, what signal strenghth to use as criteria. It could also be, that the hopper is full with 5 different but not full stacks, which have no room in the shulker box. The output would be 5. Then a sixth item arriving later, which could be stacked into the shulker box, won't go in there, as the hopper is already clogged up.

    I'm wondering if it's possible to connect all the chests from farms all the way to your storage system by minecarts. So that you don't have to visit your farms to collect the stuff, it will be transported automaticly to your storage system and unloaded. Maybe a future project if it's possible?

    • @TheRealWormbo
      @TheRealWormbo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      While that kind of thing is technically possible, the fact that farms are often placed in remote locations (for good reasons) and are not always loaded (Pix did not build his base in the spawn chunks, only the iron farm is there), makes *reliable* minecart tracks somewhat complicated. Also, it's actually better for performance if you keep specialized storage systems at your farms. For easy resource transport you can set up shulker box loaders for the farm output and make sure you can access these farms easily when you need the resources.

    I was watching a Hermitcraft video by Tango Tek and he had a setup system for his raid farm where it put the items into schulker boxes then into a double chest. Would this system be good mostly for farms where you have a limited number of items say no more than 10 or could you use this system because I think the SciCraft server uses something similar from their videos. I’d love to see a video where you consolidate bulk storage (i.e. how to setup from a multiple double chests system into shulker boxes into corresponding chests)

    Pix! Is the redstone contraption in the end of your video (the full shulker box one), can it be modify to detect a shulker box which has, let's say, containing half of the space of the shulker box?

    • @Pixlriffs
      @Pixlriffs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Easily! Instead of a redstone block side-input, you need something that outputs a constant signal strength of 7 or 8. A comparator reading another half full container, or a half-eaten cake, is usually the best approach :)

    • @TheRealWormbo
      @TheRealWormbo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cakes are legit an important storage tech redstone component due to the signal strength 14 comparator output (or any even value less than that) and them not being a block entity. Other such blocks are cauldrons (signal strengths 0 to 3) and composters (signal strengths 0 to 6, or 8; 7 is possible but temporary). The next best thing probably is a dropper if it won't be powered, or a barrel if it might be powered, or is supposed to transmit a redstone signal itself.

    can't you measure the redstone signal strength of the hopper that fills the shulker box to determine if the box is full? the moment the box can't accept any more items, the hopper will get filled with items and should signal when it's ready to change the box?

    • @Pixlriffs
      @Pixlriffs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You could do that, but the hopper signal will also be variable depending on how many items are in each stack, and if multiple items somehow end up in there before the box is loaded, it could eject the box before you want it to

      @@Pixlriffs One option is to do a rising edge circuit triggering shulker box replacement when feeding hopper goes from 1 to 2 output. Feeding hopper will remain at 2+ for some time after new shulker is in.

    • @swhichd8133
      @swhichd8133 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@scorrp_10 This doesn't work reliably for mixed items. The hopper can fill with single items of different types and never reach signal strength 2 if the items being fed in don't match them. Also, any unstackable will instantly result in signal strength 3 from the loading hopper. For mixed item loaders, you use an intermediary container between two hoppers such that the item put in is instantly drained from it. When the hopper loading the box backs up and can't pull from the intermediary container anymore, a comparator reading the container will then output a signal that can be used to break the box. It is necessary to lock the hopper feeding into the intermediary container and keep it locked until it drains into the new box, because otherwise the loader will fail if there is continuous item input when the new box fills up and the container was never drained.

      @@yeppers3701 Assuming you are running Java edition, for lower end systems it might be worth looking into optimization mods. These don't actually change gameplay, but modify the internals of the game in a way that it performs certain operations more efficiently. Personally I'd recommend running the combination of Lithium, Starlight and Sodium, all based on the Fabric mod loader. An all-in-one solution many people recommend would be Optifine, which is about as easy to install, but may include certain optimizations that actually do affect gameplay, such as disabling the spawn chunks via a less-than-obviously named setting. Many of Optifine's non-optimization features (e.g. shader support or a zoom key) are also available as Fabric mods (e.g. Iris and "Okay Zoomer"), so they play well with the optimization mods I mentioned above.
