This music and the acting of Tom Berenger made Platoon one of the best Vietnam war movies ever made. My grandfather was a First Sergeant E-8 and did two combat tours in Vietnam. Barber, a native of Pennsylvania born in 1910, he wrote Adagio for Strings in 1936 during a trip to Austria. He is said to have written it after reading Virgil's epic Aeneid which includes the tale of Aeneas who gave up the love of his life, Dido, for love of service to his government and the gods. Adagio for Strings brought the somewhat reclusive Barber immediate fame. It was voted the #1 favorite adagio some years ago in a survey.

Thank you for this long version of one of the most moving pieces of music I have ever heard. Unfortunately, I only seek it out after the loss of one of my family members; this time a 14 year old dog. I now enter a mode of reflection as this music plays in the background without me having to replay it. My fingers are crossed that there are no embedded commercials to break the mood. Thank you again.
I hope you are healed a bit by now. I lost my dog of 14 years, and it just about killed me. With this incredibly spiritual music I can be with all of those I love who are somewhere else. Good luck to you.
In music theory it’s perfect. Short succinct and simple. Very touching to the mind and emotionally powerful. Simple in its design but difficult to master its subtleties. But most people especially my age will always relate it to the movie Platoon. However moving this piece of work wasn’t meant to be a representation of the suffering of war. It was a lament and expression of the loved and lost. Kudos to Oliver Stone for using this incredible piece of music to make his film inscribe its mark on history but this piece of music to beautiful to be pinned or labeled to just one movie. Mr. Barber is a master composer and has created a work of art that is nothing short of heaven for my auditory pleasure.
