I worked at the Windsor Engine Pant that made the 351. Production was 3 engines per minute - 1200 per shift - should be lots around. I worked balancing the cranks and many of the production line jobs. The toughest job (other than the foundry casting blocks, heads and cams and cranks) was the hot test where the engine was run and final engine balance was done before loading into the box cars.
The 351 Cleveland I put in my '68 fastback was part of Ford's Pantera project. When the Pantera was canceled, they sent the remaining engines to selected dealers. I used a Sig Erson high lift short duration camshaft, Mallory dual point distributor, Offenhauser 360 intake with a Holley 850 cfm double pump four barrel carb, and Doug Thorley headers. It was a runner. Loved driving it.
I just bought my 10 year old daughter. A 1967 mustang it currently has a 289 in it. However we are searching for a 351 Clevland planning on completely restoring it with a few upgrades. She is picking out all the colors. White with pink racing stripes and tan pony interior. Gonna be a blast
@J.C. Kohle I sold the 351W that came out of this car 3 days after I pulled it. It's definitely not junk, and the person who bought it is putting it back into their '70 Mustang that came with that engine originally, replacing a 6 cyl they had been running for several years.

1985 ford f150 4wd 351windsor. It's a great motor. I suggest a Edelbrock top end kit for yours if you build it. Depending on how many miles yours has, you might not need to touch lower end. Mine has 117,000 original miles. It had been sitting rarely used for twenty-five years before I got it. I got it free because it ran bad and no one knew what was wrong. I knew. It was the fuel pump. They couldn't believe it. It's a great motor.
Growing up, my dad had a 73 Ford Ranch Wagon with a 351 Windsor. I wish he had held onto that car I would totally rock it today as my family hauler. I think he got rid of it in the late 90s
A nice lady gave me this 1982 F-150, with a 351W. I found out today that it was made in San Jose Ca., which really means it was made in Milpitas Ca., I know that because my Dad and all my Uncles and my Grandfather all worked there. My Dad worked in the Truck Dept., and the Plant closed that year. So that means that my late Father very well could have worked on this truck. That's why I think I'll keep her. I'm having fun working on her. I'm learning so much. Like the firing order is different for Ca. trucks, because of the EEC-III Ignition system.
Used a 351W & AOD out of a 1984 Grand Marquis & put this set up in a 1963 Thunderbird.0nly mods were Edelbrock intake , 650 CFM carburetor & headers . Worked well , much better than the original 390
I've used the '69-'70 351W heads on two different 289 builds many years ago before aftermarket heads were available. Requires a water port hole drilled in the deck to match the 289 block. It's an old hot rod trick that won't break the bank. Bigger valves and ports. Use flat-top pistons to make up slight increase in CC volume. :)
I had a 74 LTD with the 351C that I bought from a wrecking yard for $150. I drove the car for a while and them installed the engine and transmission into a 65 F100 short wide box that I bought for $100. It was one fast truck until the engine spun a bearing. I was rebuilding another 351 Cleveland for a guy who left it and never came back. That was 30+ years ago. So now I am getting some Australian 2V closed chamber heads for it and finishing the build. The fast 65 pickup will live again.
Just so you know that engine was built in Windsor Ontario Canada. The plant was known as Windsor Engine Plant One. That plant started with the 221 ci V8 that grew to 260 then 289 then in 1969 the plant was converted to build the 351. The plant produced 351's from 1969 until it was closed in 1996. just a little info.
@@jordanpeele5306 hi Jordan, the 351 Windsor dip stick changed I think in the late 70's. It was moved from the front cover to the oil pan when we went to the double sump pan. The dipstick is a different length for the double sump than for the front cover version. If you happen to find a 351 Windsor from an Econoline van it will be almost 4 feet long. The assembly plant took out the dipstick and tube we installed and put their own in. I don't know the exact length of the dipsticks but if you mix them you won't get accurate results. The engine you have is an older one so the dipstick is in the front cover. The double sump pan won't fit in your Mustang. so if the stick isn't right then that is what you got. Hope this helps.
The 351W has a taller deck height than the 289 /302 engines . Full Police packaged LTD Crown Victoria 1981-1991 had this engine as well with dual exhaust VIN code G .
I have a 351 windsor in a 1976 mustang cobra II, so far for modifications I've swapped out the 2 barrel intake and carb for a weiand 4 barrel intake and edelbrock 600 4 barrel carb
I have a '69 Fastback that the PO used to race. I'm in the process of putting it back as a cruiser. The vehicle plate tells me that the car came with a 302/FMX but what I have is a 351W/C4. I have no idea what components are in this engine but it is a powerhouse! I'm updating C4 to AOD.
I bought an 1984 f150 about 5 years ago i over heard my father's friend say that he needed to sell his old ford to make a payment on his new truck he just bought out of curiosity i asked what he wanted said 400.00 bucks i thought maybe its a junked out ol truck ssid it was his everyday work truck for the past 15 years and still runs and drives great i never asked what was worng with just told him if he pulled in my driveway with it id give him 400.00 for it an hour or so later he pulls up in it never asked no question bought it right then and man was i lucky this truck is a beast i drove it every day for a work truck myself with a 16ft trailer loaded down with tools and equipment for about 5 years now up until 2 months ago it started leaking oil real bad so i parked it so i didn't ruin the motor i pulled the engine to replace all outter gasket and seals as i started to replace all these i noticed alot of wear and tear so now im trying to figure out what kind of 351 this is i do know its not a Cleveland i was lead to believe it is a modified engine but i went to order a complete rebuild kit i was told by parts store its a Windsor the numbers i found on the block is located at the right side at the bottom rear just above the oil pan the #s are E3AE-6015-BA2 and right under that are the numbers 4H17 if anyone could help with this i would be grateful i would love to keep this ol ford alive its still beast when i parked it except for the major oil leaks thanks if anyone knows how to help figure this out
I’ve got the 4bbl 351 in my 1985 F150 Lariet as well, 26,370 on the odometer, probably sitting at 126,370 or so in 35 years, but my motor made a loud Bang sound and now it won’t run. Any advice? Went to get my timing checked and she went bang and won’t run.
Another way you can quickly id a 351W vs the 289/302 is the height of the distributor base. The base is recessed about an inch below the intake manifold on the 351. The base on the 289/302 is almost flush with the intake manifold. How I would build the engine would be totally dependent on the vehicle it is going into and what the vehicle is used for. I am more of a hot rodder vs a nut and bolt kind of guy. I would keep the short block pretty stock/basic with a better than stock cast piston, good set of rings, stock OE crank. Keep the CR around 10:1. I would then install a good top end kit (heads, retrofit roller cam and lifters, roller rockers and a good dual plane intake) from one of the many good aftermarket manufacturers. I would top it off with either a good 750 or a 780 vacuum secondary carb carb if using an automatic trans with tall gears. If the budget allows a throttle body type fuel injection is even better. Holley makes some great systems for not that much more than a good carb. The automatic learning of the systems is great. The engine will cold start better and run far better without a professional tuner. Of course you have to finish it off with good set of headers. This will produce an engine that should make 400+ HP, a flat torque curve and drive close to stock. Kept the cam overlap fairly wide to retain good vacuum for power brakes. Above all have fun!!
On a mission! 1984 351w block with standard balanced lightened crank, standard rods & pistons, honed and new molly rings, GT40 big valve ally heads, comp cam, Scorpion roller rockers, new 750 cfm edelbrock, edelbrock intake. ford racing water pump, high flow oil pump, edelbrock true roller timing set, pro street 28 oz crank damper, all edelbrock hardware and 2 new nice big Max speeding Rods Turbo's all through a T6 Manual box..... should be fun!
I have a 1983 Lincoln Towncar with the optional 351w carbureted. It has been modified with competition cams, roller rockers, carb is a 1750 cfm fastfuel 4 barrel carb made by Holly.
Your 351W is an early casting that has beefier webs in the mains and a high nickel content. If it has not been bored excessively, it is one of the good ones. It also has a shorter deck height at 9.480" as opposed to 9.503". This is what my race motor is based upon except I've got an SVO crank and Cleveland heads at 11.5:1.
It would be great if you go to a gathering of old cars for the last episode of this serie 😊 (and see the reactions and comments of visitors) ...just an idea 😉
I just got a 75 ford E100 van with a 351W. It’s a 2barrel carb I think. It’s not running but motor spins, have not pulled the engine cover or air cleaner yet.
I had a 351W out of a 95 Cobra R in my 1994 Cobra. Was built with a custom camshaft, Trickflow 240cc high port heads, Edelbrock Victor EFI intake, Accufab long tubes, Accufab throttle body. Made good power out of it but never got a final dyno number or a track time in that configuration before selling it. I suspect it was between 360-380 at the wheels based off where the previous configuration was at.
Hi, I have a 65 convertible, and when I bought it to my horror I found it had a 351 W in it (C090E-6015-B4) and really do not know if anything has been done to it. I was abused one member of the Ford Mustang Club who said that my car is no longer original (true) but also reckoned that the motor will twist the engine bay and front end totally ?? Well i hope not. Anyway I am considering buying a 289 to replace this engine which is actually in pretty good shape. I would be interested to get your opinion ? Cheers, Peter L in Oz...
Hello, the stamp number is D1AE 6015 DA6 0617 and the other stamp is 1J153251. The 351 engine was given to me rebuilt when I purchased the 1965 mustang. But I have never put it in because the mustang has a rebuilt 289 engine in it. I heard the D Model is hard to find, does this make it a desirable engine, it’s a long block rebuilt.
Great Video. Just wanted to add some info, yes early 351w intake manifold bolt count is 16 but later year's used 12 like the 302. not sure what year they started this? another quick way to confirm is to measure the width of the manifold, 9.5" on a 302 and 11.25 or so on a 351W
Thank you I was reading the comments to find this LOL I bought a brand new stealth intake for a 351 Windsor and it’s got 12 holes... ias a bit confused
This may be off topic with your video but I have 1993 F350 5.8L 351w EFI and I need to change out the crankshaft. What should I watch out for when purchasing a used or reconditioned one? Will any year 351w crankshaft fit?
I have it in a 1972 Mercury montego mx I have a 351 Windsor and right now I’m having problems need help if you can help me out it is not catching fire but it’s turning still I replace everything that had to do with firing
Besides the intake , the real easy to identify the 351 is the weather neck is in the block 302 is in the intake manifold. If you are lucky you may have c90e ( check number , been a long time ) head they are not common but worth looking for . You can use gt40 head from an explorer 302 about a 20,30 hp bonus ,only deal is the head bolt holes must be drilled to 9/16”,not a big deal ,easy deal my memory is the 2v @4v were the same head v stands for Ventura so just change the intake . All small block 289-302-351 build interchange pits , book explains all of it . Look on line or eBay Do not get gt40p heads these use a quirky ex manifold , no after mkt yet available. In old so fact check #’s these old heads use the large spark plug thread , yep I like my fords !
Hello. I have a strange bird; E350 church van with 351 Windsor. This apparently has electronic distributor with NO HOOKUP for a vacuum line!!?? All aftermarket distributors for this application have vacuum like nipples. It starts and idles but when you put it in gear and go, it stumbles and dies. Periodically won't start. We have changed the plugs, wires, rotor except for plugs one and two. Tried new tps, new map sensor, new cap and rotor, new wires checked 3x for proper firing order, New IAC. Distributor will not turn after loosening small bolt. Please help with this oddball. Tksia.
great video my man. I will be decoding my freshly rebuilt 351W this wknd for one specific reason... it doesnt have a correct oil dipstick. The ones from cjpony.com for a 66-69 do not show the proper fill line level so I must have a newer block. any insight on oil dipsticks? Currently engine resides in a 67 mustang!
help identify this on my block. C90E-6015-B-2 AND IS THE FIRING ORDER SAME AS 289/302? AND AT WHAT DEGREE TO SET THE HARMONIC BALANCER ! OR CAN I GET AWAY WITH JUST TAKING OUT THE INTAKE (EXISTING 2 BARREL) I GOT A EARLY 80'S FORD GT INTAKE (4BARELL,). WILL IT FIT? CAME WITH FELPRO PART#1250 INTAKE GASKETS.THANKS ALSO HEADS ARE STAMPED 351 WF... AND THIS SITS ON MY 1950 FORD SHOEBOX WITH A 70'S C4..
If memory serves me the 1969 mustang 351w 4v had the highest compression of any mustang that year at 11.5 or 12:1 while even the Boss 302 was at 11:1 but that was in the heads also you may be able to boost it even more by betting a thinner head gasket from a 289 Hi Po special order/optional head gasket that raised that by a few tenths as well... but the 2v and 4v differences were mostly in the cylinder heads. Most all of the parts except the intake manifolds and connecting rods and crank were interchangeable being the differenced from the 289, 302, and 351w was the stroke the 289 and 302 had the same deck height... I know you know this being this is not your 1st rodeo but this comment was mainly for the people new into the classic cars. Also the classic Ford motors seemed to pull different than todays they felt stronger even though todays have about 2x the power.... it is like raw power versus refined power....love the idea of a modern Coyote possibly turbo's or a blower on it for this can't wait to see what you are going to do with this
@@ClassicNation I had a 69 Mach 1 with the 351w as a graduation gift from high school had it tore down to the frame and got rid of it when I got married, never got to hear it run but was spec'd out at about 400hp bored .60 over full tube headers and a boss 302 cam in it with a 4 speed this was my 3rd mustang I've owned my dad still has 2 one 64 1/2 convertible 289 hi-po and a 67 gt fastback 390 4 speed with overhead console as well thats how I new about the 68 torque boxes he did that resoring mustangs was a 3 generation family hobby with us
@higgs singlet ,not sure I was going on my 69 Mach1 (this was like 25 years ago) I remember there was a difference in the 390 2v and 4v heads and thought the 351w had a smaller combustion chamber on them. I slept since then but I do remember the 351 4V having the highest enginge compression of any of the Ford v8's that year.. I thought the, I thought the 3514v heads had an L shaped port on them for a bolt to pass through as well (may be thinking of the 390 again I slept since then lol)
What's the difference between a roller block and a non-roller block? I have a 351w C30E-6015-B-6 block number. I want to put a new cam in with roller rockers and lifters. Is there a retrofit type of set up to allow me to use my block?
I would, but the coupe has the matching numbers 289 that I've warmed up a bit. It drives fantastic and I just don't have it in me to pull that trusty old 289 out for something else. That's the primary reason that I decided to get a '67 Fastback in the first place: so I could build it out a little more wild than the coupe!
I have 1979 ford f-150 4x4 and I think it has the 351 c I didn,t pull the motor yet.some people say you can tell by the waving on the block is that true. Ron
For those of you who have not read all the comments yet-the early 351W engines used 16 bolts on the intake, but the later motors used only 12 just like the 289/302's.. I have a 1976 351W motor and it has only 12 bolts holding on the intake... don't let the bolt count throw you off.. I'd think MOST 351W motors have only 12 intake bolts, unless you stumble across a very early one... They say 76 was the LAST year for the 16 bolt intake, and that 77 forward was only 12 bolt. I have a 76 Engine here and it has a 12 bolt intake on it. It's possible somewhere along the lines someone swapped the heads, and intake... or they just bolted on a later intake to early heads? I'm not sure.. but ima bout to find out.. hopefully not the hard way. I have to pull the intake to change the hydraulic flat tappet lifters over to hydraulic roller lifters, and install a roller cam at the same time. Will see if my heads have the extra bolt holes or not. This was great information, because it got me to researching the 12 vs 16 bolt heads, and what people are saying about the coolant getting into the crank case is enough to scare me to death! I'm pulling the intake to see what is happening underneath that thing. I might end up having to swap heads as well. If so, I'm going aluminum! something that actually flows some air-UNLIKE THE WINE CORK HEADS THAT FORD MADE... What was Ford thinking when they made those worm-hole exhaust ports? Jesus man.. It's like they wanted to kill any chance at the engine making ANY horsepower...
Had a 1974 high nickel block 351w...adapted to roller cam with spiders and small circle camshaft. With edelbrock rpm performer heads and single plane .030 over 10:1 compression , and with that roller cam limited by the block made 505 hp , 520 lb ft on dyno. @ 6600 rpm thats back in 2010-11. Next will be using 351w out of 1995 3/4 ton E250 van...roller block ...so I can run more cam not have to use the archaic spider system and of.course better AFR heads 10.2 to 1 ...should be 550 hp n/a 🤞
The 351 Windsor Commonly has 12 intake bolts not 16, just the newer model 351 W is what I am told, I have both intakes and the 351 Windsor heads fill fit on the 302 block, but not the intake the 351 is wider. Both intakes that I have are a 1980 model. Besides all you have to do is thread the 4 extra holes and install some short bolts in them and it should work.
Hi, If the H-code is less desirable, which code is best to build a 351W to replace my 460 bbf in my 67 mustang? thanks in advance for feedback. Cheers from Motown.
When I was in high school 1970 I put a 69 cougar 351w in a 67 mustang that had a worn out engine I seen this video and the mustang I was thinking wow is that same car Ford had a book call staging where you could build up there engines in stages with Ford parts So we put 289 hi-po Ford cam and lifters in the 351w kept the 2 barrel in take put a holley 2 barrel 500 now reminder we were in high school with not to much money Had trouble finding headers boy that thing run good By putting that 289 hi-po cam in the 351w you had to change firing order to a 289 the book From Ford told you to do this I was drafted the car was sold the guy who bought it re ran the the firing order to what was cast in the 351 intake that was on it he never got running right again I wish i had keep it the book came from a Ford dealer parts department One of us worked at Ford parts RIP Gary
I have a 460 BBF in my 67 s-code coupe. It came with a 390 originally. I did not put the 460 BB in there and want to swap out the 460 for a built 351 Windsor. I heard the pre 73 blocks are very hard to find now. Any suggestions ? Do not want to spend big money on a ford racing or dart block. Thanks for going over the casting numbers and intake bolt patterns, big help. Cheers from Motown.
Why would u not build the 460 and want the 351Windsor I got 77 Ranchero with 351w wish I had 460 or even 390 but I'm build the Windsor up, look on Facebook market there everywhere down here in western Pennsylvania
@@warrengreen3217 Your point is well taken Warren. Money wise, building up the 460 is the way to go. New heads and a bigger cam and valve train would be about all I would need. A stroker kit would really put the money up there. What do you think? Would you stroke it out too? I will crunch some numbers on that option. Thanks for your feedback, appreciate it.
@@robertclymer6948 if u can afford it hell yeah stroke that pig, but I'm just put intake, headers, 4barrel carb, aluminium heads and hydraulic rockers, rollers, and a cam for my 351winsor

I just picked up a 1980 Lincoln continental but the person says 351 Cleveland is in the car but I’ll double check this weekend I think it’s a 351 Windsor
@@uraveragedave6667 I did a Clay Smith cam, custom spec'd by an engine builder in Spokane Washington who did a rebuild on the engine for me in 2013. He also ported, polished, and really worked the stock heads. The 289 is putting out right around 300hp at the crank now. It's a blast to drive.
When I was 15 the guy at the parts counter told me a chrome differential cover would give me about 10 extra horsepower I guess he laughed the whole way home after he sold it to me
I think the number of intake bolts method of identification only applies to the earlier engines. Pretty sure the later ones have the same number of bolts as the 302.
I have two 351 Windsor Marine engines, and they both have 12 bolts on the intake manifold. 6 on each side. You said 351 W motors have 8 on each side. Not sure what to think. BTW, I had a 67 Mustang fast back, same color just like the one in the video. Wish I had not gotten rid of it.
I got a 67 mustang coupe with a 351C 4v stock engine with a 600 holly carb and a msd 6al, my torque converter needs replaced but it can still light the tires up.
89 f250 Xlt lariat HD suspension with a 4 5 overdrive manual transmission. California smog bs compliant sort of i blocked off egr lol i was tired of dealing with it. I plan to strip and build it to be more highway comfortable while towing a full sized 32 foot trailer
A Edelbrock carbs linkage is wider than a 302 intake and the Windsor intake is ruffly 2-1/2 inch’s wider than a 302 I have a 408 Stroker Windsor base motor that makes 510h/p and 520 ft/pnds of torque and it is daily driven and believe it or not if I drive it like I have some sence it gets very good fuel mileage
I have a 351 Cleveland in a 65 mustang coupe. Runs great but I know very little about it. Guy bought it from a estate and then he never drove it and it sat for 8 years before I got it. He thought it was from a 72 cobra jet torino maybe. He was told the 4 speed was from a 66 falcon but not sure. The motor does have the 4 on the heads so I know its a 4v at least. The trans reverse pattern is over left and up if that tell you anything. Has a holley carb, edelbrock torquer intake and 4:11 gears. Loves to smoke the tires
Hello I just bought a 1955 f100 with an engine with numbers D7TE-A3B and these numbers below it. I E2 I could you help me see what kind of engine it is. I know it might be a 351 or a 400 ford but dont know more than that.

I had a 74 LTD with the 351C that I bought from a wrecking yard for $150.
I didn't know that! Great info, Tom!
Hey tom, apparently all oil dipsticks for a 351W are not the same. Any insight on that?

351w in my 1985 f150 lariat it is a beast I love the motor.
Agreed! I actually changed gears on my Coyote motor plans, and I'm going back to a stroked/bored 351 sbf!
I have a 351W in my 1953 Ford Customline is a really good engine
Great info! Thanks for that.
I tell by the gap between the water pump and the motor, the 351 has a gap in between and the 302 is almost flush with the motor. Just my way to tell
You're right.
It would be great if you go to a gathering of old cars for the last episode of this serie 😊 (and see the reactions and comments of visitors)

Hi I been having a hard time trying to figure out what's under the hood of my 94 cobra.
That is potent. Nice!

Later 351w had 12 bolts holding the intake. If you can get a socket on both thermostat bolts then it's a Windsor because it's an inch taller.

Also the classic Ford motors seemed to pull different than todays they felt stronger even though todays have about 2x the power.... it is like raw power versus refined power....love the idea of a modern Coyote possibly turbo's or a blower on it for this can't wait to see what you are going to do with this
I actually didn't know about the compression stuff. Interesting! Thanks for the support, Jim!

I did find out my engine is a 69 351w, but why does my engine look different than yours ? C90E is on my block.
You could build the 351 for the coupe.

The 302 does have a slightly longer stroke than the 289, but there are other differences as well: www.quora.com/What-is-the-difference-between-a-Ford-289-and-a-302-engine
Ohhh thanks man
Looking to build a 351 stroker to go in my 03 Roush mustang
Do it. That would be sweet. I'm building an all aluminum 351 stroked to 427 to go in this Mustang. I changed my mind on the Coyote.
I have the 351 H.O. Windsor in my 92 Bronco 4x4. No mods... Yet
