Making a fool of yourself in front of a crowd, not giving a F, not expecting any reward, just doing your thing. Being happy and proud. They have my respect.
Well... I think it was more like someone creating this videoclip called extras agency, choosed ppl looking like random muricans, asked for coming in a totally random clothes, gave them 100-200 bucks each and cd radio and said: you have 1hr to arrange joint performance looking like some randoms having a good time and dancing in front of onlookers. And that's it xD An open secret that most of nowadays yt vids with pranks, gold diggers etc. works like dat.
Imagine if you were in the crowd thinking what the hell am I seeing, then to look back and understand you just witnessed one of the greatest music videos of the 90’s
The story of the video is pretty amazing. Its deliberately made as a bit of a joke to look cheap. MTV originally rejected it for broadcast as they thought it wasn't professional TV standard. Then Norman Cook had to explain it was meant to be bad. The song took off, people thought the video was hilarious, and against the odds, it ended up winning the three awards at the 1999 MTV awards! When they were filming, someone was frantically running around getting legal permission from all the people in the background shots so it could be used.
I sincerely think this music video is one of the best of all time. I love flashy stuff too, but there’s just something about how sweet and real this video is that I love.
I remember watching this on MTV back in the day and being like "who are these people and why are they so enthusiastic and yet dancing so weirdly". Many years later, now I know. This song means so much to me, it was played at my fathers funeral and I can’t tel you how happy I am every time I hear it, just thinking back about all of the good time we had together
the 6 piano notes/chords that make up the melody of this song feel perfect. This is a perfect song to symbolize the end of an era in your life. graduating HS/college, moving out of a living space, a friend moving away, etc.
My mom died in 2002. She got ill in 2001 and I still, deep inside, I divide the time before and after her death. This song magically reminds me of the time when everything was just perfect and people very cool...sadly all thats gone now.
I remember when our professor back in university used to show his love for music videos, and we all were fascinated. He also told us that this one was his favourite one. He couldn't explain why. He just said that it had something special that really touched him. Today, I can understand why. Rest in peace wherever you are, professor.
best music video ever made. Nobody cares how they look or what others think of them, just free, having fun, and being stupid. Pure innocence. The guy who doesn't understand why they are enjoying themselves who shuts down the music is a prime example of people who aren't comfortable in their own skin. I think it's brilliant. There's a message behind the video in my opinion.
That guy who shuts music was the manager of the cinema the interaction between the director of the Video (the guy leading the dance) went on a lot longer as he explains what they're up to and I think hence the jump hug
Love that everything about this video screams 90's and yet is absolutely timeless. Brings me back to when MTV still played music and I was a kid and started to actually sort out my own taste in music.
Absolutely. I first heard this song in 2009 while riding to a work appointment with a favorite coworker. It came on the radio and she squealed with delight, cranked it up and seat danced while we drove to the appointment. Now, 14 years later, I work from home but when it came on the radio the other day I remembered that afternoon and cranked up the volume and started dancing around my home office.
I’ve cried watching this a couple times before, there’s just something that gets to me in how silly yet completely serious they dance in front of everyone

This video is so weird and I love it. And I really liked to see the people standing around and actually _watching_ and not filming. Many things were great before the time of iPhones etc etc.
I think it's quite a courageous act to start dancing like a guerrilla in a public space, but even more so is the warm eyes and applause of the audience surrounding you!
This made me tear up. The beauty of acting out in a joyous way - and how damaged everyone is in line around them - awkward, retentive, pent up, self-conscious. And how much worse things have gotten. People brazen enough to step up and act the fool..........................they're vital, precious, and powerful to humanity. They hold the keys!!
Wow. What's beautiful about this is that each individual in the audience will have a story to tell that day during dinner, over the phone, at work the next day, in the kitchen with a wife, and everything in between.

I was deep in the trenches of a ballet company when this video came out. A lot of us looked down on the video in a very snooty way, claiming it was not "real" dancing. Nowadays I realize.. this is EXACTLY how dance is supposed to be!
it looks awkward because this is all a prank, they just showed up and started making a music video in front of this theater because they thought it would be a good concept for a film but obviously they look nervous and like they're making things up because this was really a one and done thing- they are being kicked out like the guy shutting the music off.
Hey, I would like to go back to the '80s yes. However, I would do anything to go back to the '90s to get the hell out of 2020 of course. And i am a 45 yr old man.
I love the fact that they are just having fun, I mean there's is no super complicated choreography and overqualified performers. They are just themselves having some fun. This is so inspiring.
after all these years, this still cracks me up. this is probably one of the best music videos of the 90's. this won 3 vmas from mtv vma in 1999. initially i thought this was scripted, like the "background audiences" were paid actors. this was actually for real, they didn't even bother to get any permission from the theater's owner to do this cult like dance in front of that place lmfao.
Best music video ever. It is so bad that is is beyond so good. It is so awesome. So spectacular. So sublime that you will tear up and wish Spike put you in the music video and you have this epic claim to fame of being in this video for this incredible song.
This absolutely reminds me of my friend who passed away last year.. may she dance away in heaven in her special crazy way... rest in peace dear Karen Atkins... LOVE YOU ALWAYS
apparently this was filmed “guerrilla-style” (without the location owners’ permission), so nobody in the background knew what the hell was going on (except for Norman, obviously). so yes, all of the reactions are 100% genuine. they really just happened to witness a flash mob dancing to Fatboy Slim.
@@CJonesApple i highly doubt it considering at the beginning it sounds like they are actually playing it before it fades to the overlayed song, also 2:11
I have never seen something that has made me want to live my life so freely before EVER The 90's man. Good times! wow! 2019 and still laughing great piece of work
But they will look back on the 2020s as vintage and say "remember when it was just humans that ruled the world" or "look at the antique iPhones grandma had to use"
The late 90s were peak human optimism. Everything felt like it was going in the right direction and that the new millennium would see humanity blossom. I wish we could get back there, only have broadband capability that we do now and internet as well developed sans Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc - TH-cam would make the cut though in my utopia, for sure 🙂
Wow looking back now I'm going through my head wondering where I was when this took place. 1998...1998...eight years old living in West LA about 10 minutes away, going to school in Santa Monica...it's truly amazing to see things from a different perspective 22 years later
A flash mob is a flash mob. Cavemen formed a flash mob to dance during the middle of their dinosaur barbeque. Perhaps you mean “before the expression ‘flash mob’ was coined.”
I can remember watching this video on Much music back when it came out in 1998, and I gotta say, I think it has only grown more entertaining with age! Modern Music videos will never compare to this masterpiece!

I'm Brazilian and this initial introduction to the song reminds me of a gospel song here in our country. It's incredible how universal the song is because it's practically the same melody

HAHAHAHAHA.
I would love to go to that school
It's likely that was the only way they were able to restart together after the 'management' switched off the player...
thats where they learned it
This is dance in its purest form, immaculate.
It had to be fun to make and how lucky to be a bystander in the video.
Love, passion, dedication and good vibes. That is all that matters.
ay Disco Elysium
I was deep in the trenches of a ballet company when this video came out. A lot of us looked down on the video in a very snooty way, claiming it was not "real" dancing. Nowadays I realize.. this is EXACTLY how dance is supposed to be!
Hell yeah
No you were right. As a teen, I thought the dancers were exploited handicapped adults 🥴
Well...it was acting so yeah
@@deionamariemuhammad628 lol the dude dancing is spike jonze!
it looks awkward because this is all a prank, they just showed up and started making a music video in front of this theater because they thought it would be a good concept for a film but obviously they look nervous and like they're making things up because this was really a one and done thing- they are being kicked out like the guy shutting the music off.
Loved the 90s. Wanna go back
Build a time machine, and I will join you! 😁
Hey, I would like to go back to the '80s yes. However, I would do anything to go back to the '90s to get the hell out of 2020 of course. And i am a 45 yr old man.
1999 to be exact, that seemed to be the best year.
@@dexterellis7818 Me too!
immerwiedergut.
The first time I ever seen this on MTV my friends and I just smoked a joint and we were like”what the fuck did we just watch” lmao
Fr 😂😂😂😂
I love those moments

Awesome.
I remember being in highschool thinking 🤔
"are these people special??!"
Lol, such a GREAT vid and song!
And you couldn’t even rewind bro.....just imagine that pain
I love the fact that they are just having fun, I mean there's is no super complicated choreography and overqualified performers.
They are just themselves having some fun. This is so inspiring.
The 90s were awesome!
Anytime before cell phones was Awesome!!
Genius...
The very pinnacle of what dancing is all about!! Fantastic.
after all these years, this still cracks me up. this is probably one of the best music videos of the 90's. this won 3 vmas from mtv vma in 1999. initially i thought this was scripted, like the "background audiences" were paid actors. this was actually for real, they didn't even bother to get any permission from the theater's owner to do this cult like dance in front of that place lmfao.
this is probably the best music videos ever
tootsie|troll® , me too😀
@Brandon S Original flash mob before there was even a word for it! 😀
Best music video ever. It is so bad that is is beyond so good. It is so awesome. So spectacular. So sublime that you will tear up and wish Spike put you in the music video and you have this epic claim to fame of being in this video for this incredible song.
This is so great. Sooo great. They are free.
I remember when Spike Jones and his dancers performed this at the VMAs with those light up robes it was so awesome
The inspiration for Raygun’s performance at the Olympics 2024 🇦🇺love this song, always laughed at how funny this clip is.
I just saw the Raygun 'performance' this morning and thought this, while you beat me to saying it, I'm glad to see I'm not the only one thinking it!
I thought the same thing... lol
Yeah, just realise the same thing. I'm surprised it took me so long!
I came back to watch this video because I knew it was better than Raygun
3:12 but no kangaroo
This absolutely reminds me of my friend who passed away last year.. may she dance away in heaven in her special crazy way... rest in peace dear Karen Atkins... LOVE YOU ALWAYS
God bless.
I absolutely love Fatboy Slim.
He was a huge part of the music scene and everywhere from 1997-2002.
What great and fun times
I wasn't expecting this music video to bring me to tears but damn it did. Sometimes the nostalgia hits extra strong.
You're not alone! 😢

Just met Norman today and had an awesome chat with the legend. Could not believe it was him. Such a great guy
apparently this was filmed “guerrilla-style” (without the location owners’ permission), so nobody in the background knew what the hell was going on (except for Norman, obviously). so yes, all of the reactions are 100% genuine. they really just happened to witness a flash mob dancing to Fatboy Slim.
I believe they were actually dancing to a different song.
@@CJonesApple does not every one
@@CJonesApple i highly doubt it considering at the beginning it sounds like they are actually playing it before it fades to the overlayed song, also 2:11
The leading dancer is also some dude known as SPIKE JONZE!!!
Norman is not in the video
One of my favorite jams of my summer holidays of 1999 when I was 15 and I'd watch this video with such joy on MTV. 🥰

Seeing people celebrating life is alwaysgood!!
I have never seen something that has made me want to live my life so freely before EVER
The 90's man. Good times!
wow! 2019 and still laughing great piece of work
i was just thinking that. Look at everyone in that video. They look so happy. I miss the 90s
@@moonasha me too!
Same! It makes me laugh too much every time, I don't even understand fully why. Just so joyful.
This is in my opinion the best music video ever recorded.
I concur.
I DO CONCUR
Yeah its just stunning. 🙄
Nope, that destinction goes to Manchester Orchestra for their video for the song, Simple Math.
@@picklefish74 I said in my comment "This is in my opinion"
I love when people get together like that, create this energy and do something incredible like this.... god i miss the 90s
This is such a classic, puts a tear in my eye. Man I miss the 90s and early 2000s
Wow looking back now I'm going through my head wondering where I was when this took place. 1998...1998...eight years old living in West LA about 10 minutes away, going to school in Santa Monica...it's truly amazing to see things from a different perspective 22 years later
this was before anybody even knew what a "flash mob" was
A flash mob is a flash mob. Cavemen formed a flash mob to dance during the middle of their dinosaur barbeque. Perhaps you mean “before the expression ‘flash mob’ was coined.”

I'm 73 and over the years I have watched this video over a hundred times. I love the music and this great funny video.
The guy turning off the music just made them more powerful
I was born back on 12th January 1999 my dad tells me this song was playing when I was being birthed so it means a lot to me this song ❤️❤️
Happy birthday
Spike Jonez is the most underrated creator.
the skate videos he has directed (yeah right, fully flared)are in a league of their own too..
Being John Malkovich is a great movie.
So glad he won an Academy Award. He’s on a whole other level of creativity. Video Days is an amazing skate flick
Yeah fuck Hal Ashby
john malkovich and Her!
Aussie breakdance team 2024!
they're better! 😂
main dancer looks like raygun's husband
Lmao😂
That's being really disrespectful of this group m8
lol, first thing I thought when I seen raygun
I can remember watching this video on Much music back when it came out in 1998, and I gotta say, I think it has only grown more entertaining with age! Modern Music videos will never compare to this masterpiece!
I'm Brazilian and this initial introduction to the song reminds me of a gospel song here in our country. It's incredible how universal the song is because it's practically the same melody
I have never seen something that has made me want to live my life so freely before EVER

Fun fact: this was filmed at Fox Bruin theatre in Westwood, LA. The same
Place where Margot Robbie goes to the movies in Once upon a time in Hollywood.🔥
Really? Wow! I didn’t know that. Thank you.
The movies are Practical Magic and Star trek insurrection just let you know how old this is.
I wondered where it took place. Also this video has canceled my existential depression for a good amount of time.
Westwood has the most GORGEOUS old movie theaters, it’s so awesome.
Cool
Who's here in 2025. Brings back a long lost file in my brain that hasn't been accessed in a long time
That power hug when the dude turns off the stereo...🤘
I came here to go down a Spike Jonze rabbit hole. The man is talented! I’ve only seen some of his movies like Her, where the wild things are. And I found out he is a great music video director.
