I am Canadian, 70 years old and grew up following the Vietnam war on t.v. The men and women who served were around my age, and they have my love, support and admiration. We were all kids, we didn’t go because we lived next door to you. I met a door gunner on Veterans Day here, and I just felt it was an honour. Like a lot of vets, he is suffering financially. At the Field Hospital in Pleiku, in the bed next to me in the E.R. was a young man dying and completely delirious. He was shot up so badly that he was practically unrecognizable. A nurse came and sat by his bedside when she was not on duty and spoke to him, holding his hand, and pretended to be his mother. She was so kind. After four days the young soldier died in the arms of his loving mother. That young lady deserves our nations undying gratitude.

Welcome home, Thank you, and Semper Fi Brother ..
      And the Nurses...
Women of character are not at all hard to find in the military . . However,...
Women of extraordinary character are the light among them.
This Nurse spoke of the bravery of the wounded, "They were in pain, but you didn't see it" ...
That's truth. I have met many wounded Veterans, every one of them, men and women, brave beyond words, fearless in their recovery... They are indeed tall in character.
So then, What about these Nurses...
Well, it is one thing to witness or go through a traumatic event.. but to see, and deal hands on with trauma multiple times every day, for weeks, months, even years on end ?
And they had their losses too. In more ways than one I'm sure.
The bravery she spoke of was, and still is, oft inspired by their own bravery. Their courage, their fortitude, their compassion...
Hard knowledge, gentle hands, warm heart, cold reality.
She didn't speak too much on their own bravery, I thought I would mention it...
      and thank God for it.
      God Bless them.
Thank you, and thank you again Nurses, and Docs, from an old Gunny...

Thanks, Grace, I went through 95th EVAC, NSA and Charlie Med. Grunt 0311/0302 1968,69,70. The second time I got hit, I don't think I would have come out of the Operating Room w/o the nurse in Triage. She had a mask on but her eyes were beautiful and she had just a little perfume on that smelled like my girlfriend back home.
She said "I'll see you when you come out," and she did...again, Thanks, Grace and all of you, the title of this piece is so very true!

I am alive because the care I received at the 93 rd and Fort Sam, TX. The nurses were super and their care and kindness is the reason I am alive today. There is no way I can than them enough.

God Bless You Grace. My brother was in Vietnam when I was in grade school and I didn't realize the tremendous sacrifice and that all the Vietnam veterans had made and of course over 59,000 made the ultimate sacrifice. I later learned that there are 8 nurses listed also on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington. The courage, skill and compassion you and your fellow nurses showed at such a young age was beyond remarkable and you can never be thanked enough for what you did. I hope you live the rest of your life in happiness and peace. Again, God Bless You

Thank you for your service. I am so grateful that there are people like you. I do not have the stomach to be in the medical field. Funny, you were trained to save lives and I was trained to take them.

That was really moving. I have two cousins that are both Purple Heart Vietnam Veterans. They have said before that the nurses would talk to them, calm them, and bring a bit of that reality they had before going to Vietnam. I admire you Grace, you would offer up humanity in a place gone mad.

Wow, I am proud of you and want to thank you for sharing this look into your past. That is just a nursing statement that doesn’t come with any other job in the world, you were their nurse, their mother, sister or girl friend. That is nursing and it takes someone special to be able to do that with some young man alone with a missing arm now and needing to talk with his mother. You may originally thought it was a good way to pay for school but the reality is you were being called to do something very special and that was to serve as a military nurse during the time of a war. Hope to hear many more of your stories.
