I gotta say, this video is 200% true. I used to work for NVIDIA, and it's the same. You have to ask your manager for vacation/time-off. "Work it out with your managers." They said. So between hardware/software launches; peer pressure; begging for permissions; engineering passive personalities; hardworking lifestyle. Not many were taking vacations. What this policy DOES, is giving executives and managers more vacation time. Without a tracking system, and without asking for permissions. Also for California, the company is not obligated to save that vacation money for you since there's no time tracking. This is a total scam system.

Solution to this problem: mandatory minimum vacation days. This way, everyone gets at least some vacation time and they should be encouraged to take actual time off during these mandatory "holidays". That way, working vacations can feel different from the ones that should be exclusively for recharging the old batteries.

@@Burpzzz Solution to that problem: make them take a large percentage (75%) of them or they have to take a week of forced vacation, staggered near the end of the period if multiple employees don't take them. Plus, they can only roll over 10% of their allotted days from the current year. No rolling over year to year. In other words, you can't roll over enough days to take an entire year completely off.

@@jackmackakaheavyguyhaiku545 I Don't think it's necessarily a good idea. First I just wanna say I'd completely love to have a system like that in place, because that would make my life and scheduling a lot easier. However, I know a few friends that are very motivated to work as much as they can, and simply don't enjoy the idea of taking time off, even if it makes money, they'd prefer to work overtime and get more as well as some of the guys genuinely are so in love with their job they don't look for mandatory vacations. I think it's a tough topic mainly due to people with the same ethics as my friends might feel as if a MANDATORY vacation takes away their freedom.

My company has the exact same policy (unlimited leaves) and every second of this video is so true. Since we don't have any sort of balance of leaves I actually don't know how many leaves should I take that would look decent to my manager. I was asking my friends in other companies about the no. Of leaves they get to get some idea. Also feel peer pressure when taking leaves plus my manager is a workaholic making it even tougher to ask for timeoff. Infact in the last 4 months I've just taken 2 leaves. It actually creates alot of office stress if you're team is discouraging towards vacations.

That reverse psychology with the leave days, I saw back in high school, when a teacher who already had 2 lessons earlier took the class of another teacher who was absent.
We'd all start groaning, then he'd allow anyone who didn't want to learn, to leave the class. "I only want to deal with the ones who want to learn, I can deal with even 5 students." She said. First, There was that fear of unknown consequences, maybe it's a trap and u will be on the wrong for taking up the offer.
Maybe the teacher will keep a grudge and kick u out of class next day. Maybe she'll get u in trouble with ur parents.
Maybe it's genuine, but the second issue was peer pressure. People were looking at each other, for someone to take point and lead the way. Nobody wanted to be the one who goes against the grain, so everyone got stuck there, with the keys to the jail cell, but elected to lock themselves in.

Once it got chunked like that, its easier to manage. You can file a leave outright on a planning day lets say on the first day of sprint where the planning takes place . Also the boss must be a work-life balance advocate or this will not be possible.

I got an idea: 40 vacation days/year. You're getting a vacation regardless, but the first to request specific days off is the first to get them. Those days are blacked out for request by you if the company can't afford for you to have a vacation on that day/can't plan for that absence. If you have not submitted requests for all your vacation days and had those requests approved, the company will automatically assign a vacation day.
You will be prohibited from doing anything work-related on vacation days, including doing your normal job or responding to work communications.

Well this year I managed to score 6 weeks of vacation by combining "old" vacation days (here, you can save your vacation days and use them next year), regular vacation days and some award days the company gave me for some extra work I've done. They should pay me for the extra hours, but 4 free vacation days are good enough.

I worked at a research lab. From 1979 to 1993. It was company policy that all employees had unlimited sick days. I will admit I used those sick days mostly for mental health days 🙃.

It's great if you have a good corporate culture. I worked at a company with unlimited vacation and took 8 or so weeks most years. Some people would only take 1 or 2 weeks so the company started forcing people to take a minimum 3 weeks. Certainly didn't hurt my career and employees / managers constantly told each other to take more time off. We had one guy take 12 weeks straight off

Another reason Netflix employees may be hesitant to take vacation is the fear that the person standing in for them during that time may end up taking their job. With an excellent job like working for Netflix I can imagine most employees are terrified of losing said job so are probably always looking over their shoulders, worried that someone better may replace them.

I worked in a job with an unlimited paid sick policy. You were supposed to be home and they could check up on you back then (they don't now) but they found that people took less sick days than if they would have been given 10 paid sick days a year, or something similar.

Other countries think we're weird AF because we hardly ever take a vacation and end up with lost v days because of that. Other countries people are really encouraged to take the full time. I've never been at a job that gives vacation days, been working for the state of Illinois for 19 years now, we get no v days, no maternity leave, and you have to have worked a specific amount of hours to get 1 paid sick day, we can't even get overtime or time in a half for holiday's, and if you work over hours, you get replaced. Why am I paying union dues again?

    • @OfficialSamuelC
      @OfficialSamuelC 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

The UK, EU are heaven for benefits and looking after you. Paid maternity for a long time, men also, minimum paid vacation every year, statutory sick pay if you’re off after a certain amount of time (after 14 days I believe, with doctors sicknote) and so on.

Limited or not, the vacation days to ask for is difficult. No matter if it's 2 weeks guarantee or whatever, most jobs will make you feel bad for using them. It doesn't matter what model you use. Lots of companies don't do roll over. Kind of a use them or lose them.

I would figure you're pretty safe as long as you don't take more than that when you start, and then maybe give yourself another week after you've been there a while.

Except if you're with the union (for me anyways) where I get 15 paid sick days and can accumulate up to 50 days)

In which real company does managers encourage employees to take vacation? Netflix really does? In my 15 years' in IT field, I've only ever seen managers grumbling and trying to guilt trip you into abandoning vacation plans. And in some cases, outright deny vacation requests because of "upcoming work". All of these in case of fixed number of vacations. Such managers will also outright deny vacation requests when the company flips to unlimited vacation.
