The highest IQ thing that TOOL did: in 1989, when creating the band name, they did not use a word that could be cleverly manipulated into sounding like, being, or have anything to do with the word "mid", so that in 2022, teenagers couldn't cleverly call their music mid. Love Tool, never encountered the pretentious fans everyone speaks of. Bad apples who make what they like their personality and are too intense about what they're passionate about exist everywhere. The entire message is to let music be a passive and spiritual experience, no Bucciarati sequence to be accounted for or anything: the fact they just slid that in and made a banger around it is testament to the meaning behind their work. I find it interesting that most of the things people heavily dislike about Tool are exactly why I fell in love with their sound.
They're always droning on in the key of D - this makes people feel like all songs are the same, but to me it adds a pleasant tonal center to all thr weird stuff going on.
Lots of confusing rhythms and math - I don't bother counting or stressing over this, its all about the hypnotic feel and pulse those intertwined elements create.
Pretentious vague lyrics about spirituality - only if you choose to interpret them that way. I'd say most Tool songs have very obvious and regular topics. Love, hate, pain, loss, the human condition. Is this not what most rock bands sing about?

I never got the hate for the meaning being pretentious and too cerebral. Reading a philosophical work from Hegel, Kant or Spinoza is cerebral, reading a scientific paper is, not listening to Tool. In the album they even touch on the topic of not overthinking music and letting it flow through you to experience it to the fullest.
I'd say most of the hate comes from people who legitimately outright refuse to listen to it because of the meme, or people who just can't go "oh ok, you like this thing, cool." about things they personally don't want to experience.

      @nickmagrick7702 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@dopey473 I don't think the point is to overthink. Him even suggesting that in the lyrics is paradoxical, since the amount of effort put into the construction of the song is meticulous.
You cannot ignore the beauty and meaning of art, but at the same time if it is all you focus on you lose the soul of the art and the ability to be in the moment and make use of the knowledge that you get from being critical
There is a push and pull between both analyzing in a deep way, basically everything in life, then learning to just be in the moment experiencing instead of analyzing.
Like most things, its yin and a yang balance. Things that work in this way are often done with less suffering and more fulfillment
For instance, understanding the golden ratio and fractals are absolutely everywhere, then using that knowledge to intuitively understand and just enjoy the patterns that emerge from these mathematical universal truths

Ticks and Leaches wasn't supposed to be on the Album. The original didn't have T&L. The Label wanted them to add another song that they could put on the Radio. they pulled a "yeah, this is neat and all, BUUUT..." So in response, Tool made T&L. Long song, big middle section, to abrasive, etc. Not at all radio friendly. hence the Song lyrics. especially the chorus "Is this what you wanted? cause this is what your getting". This came to mind when you said it disrupts the flow and they can "make what they want on their album". It wasn't supposed to even be there in the first place, and Tool had a lot of trouble with Labels in the past telling them what/when to do things as labels do. Tool responding most of thw time with "it will be done when its done" kinda thing. They spend a lot of time on these songs. Even Danny Carry's Tom Drums are tuned to the key of the songs their in. The first Tool song I ever heard was "Hush" from their debut LP. That was back in their grunge days and the rough production and simplistic lyrics didn't really strike my fancy. Based on just that, I assumed Tool weren't for me.
Then, several months later, the song "Lateralus" came on my car radio, randomly, and I had no idea it was also by them. All I knew was that I had never heard rock music sound like that before, and I was absolutely blown away by it. A Google search of the lyrics later, and I realized that Tool has a much more diverse catalogue than I gave them credit for. Haven't looked back since, and decades later I still consider Lateralus my favorite record of all time.

If you actually listen to the album, the “nerdy” time signatures really make the songs unique and flow differently. Different time signatures grow on you once you can figure out what’s actually happening. Those pretentious fans literally just got introduced to prog and think Tool is better than everything else. You should check out some other progressive bands, TesseracT’s Altered State is a literal masterpiece and Meshuggah’s Obzen is groovy madness, but may be too heavy for you.

And honestly a lot the instrumentals in Obzen are really unique and I haven't heard a lot like it before in that regard. Did you know that Lateralus uses the ligma sequence for it's lyrics ?

IQ tests don't really get to the core of intellect, but simply show efficacy toward industry. How good you are for a logical system. Intelligence is a lot more nuanced than pattern recognition and maths.

I wish I was smart enough to more fully appreciate Tool, musically. I can't even bob my head or tap my foot to what they're doing. It sounds awesome. It leaves me with the impression that they are incredible, brilliant, but it leaves me behind and wishing I could come along. I just cannot get behind it. I cannot groove to it, and it leaves me feeling that this is my failing, not theirs. It's like I think geniuses will love this music, and I'm just not a genius.
Have you heard Tame Impala - Elephant? Almost the same feeling, but I feel they're granting me an easy mode. I can bob my head to that song, and only occasionally feel left behind. Tool leaves me behind utterly. Love them, though. Love you, too. Peace.

honestly i can kind of get what youre feeling- the multitude of layers can make it hard to enjoy the parts
after looking up instrumental versions, acapella versions, lyrics and explanations, and definitely the isolated tracks or covers of the drums or guitars all showed me the amazing pieces of the songs
      then the pieces fit 😏

Given your liking of Tool, you should check out Opeth as well. The growls may be too much for you, but the atmosphere, riffs, and blending of styles are some things you’ll love. It’s truly beautiful stuff. I recommend “Ghost Reveries”.

Wow, not gonna lie, I was not expecting you to grade this album equal to that of OK Computer. I mean, it makes total sense to me because admittedly this is my favorite Tool album, but damn son, 9/9+ is really high praise.
