    Wow, never seen this before, unfortunately. If I had known.....well, I just returned from my 19th trip to Japan 2 days ago, and unusual modes of transportation were kind of a recurring theme of my trip: the DMV at Shikoku, the Sumaura carlator, the (long discontinued) Tegarayama monorail in Himeji and also the slope car at Taiyo Park, the Sky Cycle at Washuzan Highland, using several ferries instead of trains just because why not? (even to Kansai Airport!), and while maybe not that unusual, for the first time driving a car in Japan. Had I known about this, I would have certainly made a side trip to Hiroshima just to ride this one...

    A real innovative solution. As described, a thing of the past. The buses, using the same street as all the cars, surely could run cheaper, as the street is maintained anyway. And happy residents, seem not (yet) facing traffic congestion. In Zurich area, there are big projects for NEW (standard) tramways, with separate tracks from car lanes. I find this hanging small cabin solution not only cute, but innovaive and probably less prone to winter conditions than any street/tire/wheel combo of buses. Is it known, what happens to the track and the cabins? Best regards from another small country with big train addiction.

    I can see why it's being discontinued. It's a short, very local public transportation system with some pretty extreme infrastructure costs. If it ran from a residential area into a very dense CBD, or if the hill was so steep and long that the skyway bypassed a 40-minute detour by road, _maybe_ it could have been worth it. It's just too big and complex for its purpose. Maybe it can be recreated if someone gets the idea to build a city into the side of a very steep ravine. Or maybe the wall of a crater on the Moon.

    Another great video and an amazing unique system.
    It´s a shame it is discontinued but it is understandable. This is a lower density residential area that will benefit more fro a bus with more stops along the way than a type of rail line with just 3 stops. Seems that most residents had to walk quite a bit to get to a station making it less viable than taking the car or, in some cases, going down on foot.

    Well, I can in a way understand that they close the line. When they opened the line, busses couldn't climb up more then 10% gradients, as a Diesel engine can only give you a quite small climbing momentum (you need a high momentum with low speeds, Diesel only gains more momentum by driving faster).
    Electric motored busses can climb up gradients up to 30 degrees. That's because an electric motor will give you 100% momentum right from the start. That's why in for example Tyrolia they had a trolley bus line climbing up the mountains, not because for environmental reasons, but because it was the only way to get enough momentum for the bus.
    Most likely when they planned pulling up this ropeway train in the style of the Wuppertal trains was more feasable than putting poles at the street side and putting wires on it. The reason is often not even, that it doesn't look beautiful or is expensive. But the wires hinder high vehicles to use the road, like crane trucks or high lorries. And as they were still developing the area, they needed big vehicles to use the road upwards.
    Nowadays with battery busses you can get electric traction without wires. So now they can change to a bus service, which is much less maintainance than this ropeway. Because to be honest: As this is not a tourist ropeway or monorail in a big populated area, the Sky Rail is a nice service - but hugely overdesigned for such an area.

    I see reason how this Sky Rail become unpopular and need to be close.
    If I was local I prefer using bus or my own car more than this quirky ride. Or just take a walk to station if I want because 1-2 km walking not bother me that much.

    • @WizardOfOss
      @WizardOfOss หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Depends...1-2 km walking while climbing 160 meters would surely bother me. Especially during the hot Japanese summers....
      Looking at this thing you wonder how it even got built in the first place. Did anyone actually expect this to ever make money? And apparently it was running a pretty high frequency, with a service every 15 minutes during most of the day, and up to every 5 minutes during rush hours. No chance they'll do anything that comes close to that with a bus....

    • @ngarageRS
      @ngarageRS หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@WizardOfOss I agree. And 170 yen per one ride with low ridership and expensive maintenance cost seem like company gonna lose money that much until they can't keep it anymore.
