  • The unit 465912 had undergone body panel works at Doncaster and was returned to service around a month ago. Strangely, rheostatic braking has been enabled on this train, and it sounds great! As far as I know, there are a few other units at Doncaster which should be due to come back soon. Maybe those networkers have their braking sounds enabled too?
    Enjoy the sounds :)

that last cutout really gives jubilee line stock vibes

It really does give 90s 365 vibes doesent it? I wonder why they got turned on, is it to keep them from wearing away? Is it to experiment with some new modifications ? It does make me wonder why southeastern do this once in a while. There's no way they are substituting the caliper brakes because I don't think you can legally run this train without its backup brakes. So I wonder !!

      got turned off on them
      because it was unreliable as

I was wondering when you were going to film this unit! Lovely sounds - they remind me of the 365s, but are slightly different - the motors seem to spool down much quicker - I presume this is due to the different gearing. It will be interesting to see if any of the other /9s get rheostatic re-instated.

Haha, I recognise ya from the rail forums and other YT comments :)
Yeah I think there are a few more networkers at Doncaster currently, so maybe they might have them enabled too!

I don't know if they gearing affects the braking nesseccerilly, (I could be wrong) I guess its also based on the amount of power used and the weight of the train. The question is, does it actually slow down better than the disk brakes? I'd assume so, but who knows.

Yeah class 465s sound a bit different the pulsing doesent echo as much through the entire unit. And the motors are different to the 365s. 465 motors start of deeper and take longer to get to high pitch relitively speaking. What I mean is , If they were geared to 90 or 100mph the motors would take longer to scream at speed.

@@bb-3653 Yes - I believe the rheostatic brakes are more effective than disc brakes, but the rheo brake can be temperamental - for example if the resistors overheat or if Wheel slide protection engages, the braking switches back to air only. This can take the driver by surprise and has caused over-runs in the past.

@365 Networker ah I see, I'm gonna assume some mods were made to make the switching quicker like the 377s. , I was actually thinking this may be the issue, the 465s regen/rheo brakes, seem to switch to standard brakes alot slower and fumble, id assume its bettsr to Invest in some tech to make that switch quicker and not overheat as much. The 465 met cams are already remarkable in Low voltage acceleration. It only makes sense to try and use them when the reliability has been inproved no? Also they'd be better at coming into platforms fast if they can switch to rheo brakes quicker.

465912 regen is currently now isolated, if you want to hear regen brakes on a 465 look out for 465919 it has it on one coach

465919 regen is now turned off- but theres a chance that 903 might have it
