  • Following vital conservation works and major improvements for visitors, English Heritage is set to reopen Clifford’s Tower in York on 2 April 2022.
    The improvements follow a £5m investment in the tower. Visitors will be able to enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the York skyline from a new free standing roof deck, constructed in a way which also helps to protect the towers historic stonework.

    This looks amazing. If I’m ever in York one day, I’ll be glad to see it in person. Cheers from California!

    I went there when I was 10 on a school trip I’m 56 now. All the class sat on the grass slopes to,eat our packed lunch. I must go back one day.

    They are making Clifford’s Tower sound fantastic. Look at its history, and it would humble the building’s reputation in a flash!

    My wife and I were there 14th July 2023. About to go up we met two groups coming down, both said it was great but not at £11 per person on the day . We had tickets for the York Castle Museum which was across the green, this was very much value for money. Now having had a look at this presentation we will give it a try on our next visit but book on line.

    that they are making things more Accessible to more people to enjoy the
    history of the place.

    Can't wait to return. My wife and I were there October of 2019, and work was being done on the walls but the site was still open to the public

    Should be an experience but no good having QR codes if some do not have phones. Hopefully there's a backup system too?

    I’m 56, I have always thought since being a teen that they really need to get rid of that dam car park next door and maybe recreate more of the castle complex or put in a nice park. They can build a car park anywhere.

      Have you tried parking in York? The carpark stays

    • @simonfrost7094
      @simonfrost7094 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thisismyname3328 York has four park and ride locations and there's also the St George car park just over the road. The only people who need to drive into and park in York city centre are residents, businesses and the disabled. It's time we stopped designing cities around the needs of cars and designed them around the needs of people instead.

    Why oh why is there still a car park in the Bailey??

    • @simonfrost7094
      @simonfrost7094 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree that the car park is a disgrace - it's full of potholes and not the right setting for a listed building (having said that, the Victorians incorporated the Tower into a 19th century gaol, so a car park is something of an improvement!).
      The car park is owned by the council. The Tower is owned by English Heritage. The council are currently running a consultation inviting residents to comment on how the area should be developed in the future. This may include converting the car park into gardens and building a pedestrian only bridge which would go behind the York Castle Museum to link up with Piccadilly on the other side of the River Foss. Nothing permanent and no timescales have been decided yet though.

    Is there a danger of turning the tower into a Disney-style theme park?

      Anything Disney is about as real as spray cheese in a can.
