- September 5 | Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) joins MSNBC's The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell. On Monday, Whitehouse wrote a letter Chief Justice John Roberts to lodge an ethics complaint against Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito for violating several canons of judicial ethics.
Whitehouse’s formal complaint follows revelations that Justice Alito accepted but did not disclose gifts of luxury travel and exclusive lodging from right-wing billionaires, one with business before the Court. Justice Alito then made public comments opining on the constitutionality of Whitehouse’s Supreme Court Ethics, Recusal, and Transparency legislation to reform the Court’s lax ethics regime, which passed the Senate Judiciary Committee in July. Justice Alito’s comments also implicated ongoing Senate investigations into Justice Alito’s undisclosed gifts.

Whitehouse should be leading our Supreme Court, not Roberts. Looks to me that Roberts has no leadership. Robert's, Alito, Thomas, Kavanaugh, Gorsuch, and Barrett, all need to be investigated. And disbarred. And so should judge Cannon. It is completely obvious what the I r agenda is. None of them deserve the position they hold. Maybe they should have the American people elect them to their judgships. Just like we do the presidency. Instead of allowing a corrupt president put them in office. Because look at the state of America. The supreme court is helping the donnie dump destroy America as we know it.

We stop voting for people that are looking for ways to get back at their perceived enemies. That's not how to run a country. Especially not a great country. Our OWN SCOTUS is responsible for the mountains of anonymous $$$ from oligarchs, both foreign and domestic, which has infested our *entire* Federally elected government and they are *also* responsible for the fact that it only took six years to produce tRump. Fascism never sleeps.

Totally agree, usually where there's smoke there's fire so apply the ethics across the board. I believe someone must have shared this type of behavior as a way to receive perks and everyone else does it so you will be fine. My concern is that the highest bids are ruled in favor of the case. We sequester jurors to get a fair trial, we ask them to avoid outside influence

Unless you are a Supreme Court Justice.
That's the issue, as the ultimate arbiters of law, they alone should realize they are held to a much, much higher standard. Kavanaugh should have never been confirmed and Thomas and Alito, just through the optics of receiving gifts, have damaged the prestige of the SCOTUS. Accountability is the only remedy to this and it should be swift and decisive - impeachment.

I hate to bring politics into this but (and I agree with you) something about the conservative mindset brings with it the tendency to be a sleazy grifter. Why is that? And to be clear, if a liberal justice didn't have their i's dotted and t's crossed we'd damn sure be quick to call them out.
