"Well, that's, essentially, how I feel about life : full of loneliness, and misery, and suffering, and unhappiness, and... it's all over - much too quickly."
"That's essentially how I feel about life. Full of loneliness and misery and suffering and unhappiness and its all over much too quickly." DAMN.... I first saw this movie way back when I was a high school student in the mid-70s. The worst part is that the sentiments were spoken over 30 years ago but they're still relevant right now!
This opening monologue is, without a doubt, a classic! Woody's style/writing/directing is definitely an acquired taste. I give Woody Allen credit for his PASSION. He doesn't make films for fortune or fame. Allen continues to create films for ONE reason- his love for the ARTS. PERIOD. "Annie Hall" holds a special place in my heart. Again, classic film in American cinema. =)
No matter whether you like him or not.. consider this. The man has actually created his own genre... There are horror films, comedies, drams, ect... then there are two directors ... you have a Hitchcock film,, or a Woody Allen film.. got to love that about the guy. He did well. I always love his films. just so different.
silent comedy is the toughest form of comedy relying on wit, delivery, and keen awareness of personal and cultural quirks - woody allen is truly one in a million.
this video was a lifesaver. i needed it for my essay on the opening of the film. thanks so much for putting this up cos i needed some of the quotes. ur awesome! :)
Amazing. Woody Allen at the top of his game. He had so much energy and vigor then, he was a creative force to be reckoned with, the cutting edge of comedy and filmmaking.
I love Woody!!! i'm in a race to see all of his movies...love most of em... Really hope he keeps on makin them great movies until his death...cause they surely keep me alive ;) Go Woody !!!
1:13 is one of my favorite moments in any movie ever. The way he pauses and sighs after telling jokes in a rambling monologue -- "Annie and I broke up and I still can't get my mind around that." So real. Incredible opening to a wonderful film.
Yeah what a classic, him , the movie, and this clip. It's amazing how little people born in the 80's and later know about anything earlier than their time, their missing out on the a time when America still had culture.
On this day in 1977 {April 20th} the Woody Allen movie "Annie Hall" opened nationwide in the U.S.A. and across Canada... The film was first shown a month earlier at the 'Los Angeles Film Festival'... It was nominated for five Academy Awards, winning four; 'Best Picture', 'Best Actress' {Diane Keaton}, 'Best Director' {Mr. Allen}, and 'Best Screenplay'... The one it didn't win was for 'Best Actor' {Mr. Allen}... Mr. Allen celebrated his 77th birthday this past December 1st...
Man, it seems like there aren't any auteurs like Allen around in today's age. I'd like to see a modern charismatic director-like Tarnatino or Spike Lee-make an intro like this, especially to one of their controversial productions.
Spike Lee is awful. Also what do you mean this generation of directors lacks charisma? We have Paul Thomas Anderson, Christopher Nolan, Martin Scorsese, Andrew Dominik...... I think you're limiting yourself.
@darcon81 There's not a doubt in my mind that Seinfeld would immediately and totally disagree with you on that. Not because he's a gracious, but simply because he's a pretty honest guy on these matters.
Man!, Woody Allen is such a great actor, in this movie (Annie Hall) he's amazing, I mean this openning is like no other else, the two key jokes that he describes, both are exactly the reason of why the relatonshiop between women a men fail.
@Ringo0008 it s paradox if we don t like smth we normally don t like more of it, so we complain about our lives but still want more of it. (like portions in the restaurant: bad and so small)
I hadn't realised until right now, but that Groucho joke, about not wanting to be a member of a club that would have him as a member? That perfectly encapsulates the entire history of my relationships with women. Why would I want to date someone fucked up enough to want to date me?
Yes thank you for sharing. Actually I am a Catholic boy who is involved with a Jewish girl. Sort of the reverse of the characters in Annie Hall. I am probably seen as a Catholic priest sitting at the table. LOL!
Allright Mr. Allen. This is it. You make me laugh. Oh. And you make me think. This is the site for the game show "You make me laugh,You make me think". Right?
@Ph3L1z14n0 They go to a Catskill mountain resort. The location itself isn't very important to the joke, but there is a subtext that the ladies are probably Jewish; this is a central theme in Woody's humor.
@Ph3L1z14n0 they go to a Catskills mountain resort - I'm not really sure what that is, but I don't think has much meaning to the joke. I might be being ignorant there, but you can still enjoy the joke without it lol
Maybe it's just me but I can't understand what he says after "There's an old joke about two women who are at a ????????" I can't understand the next part, if anyone can explain it, I'd be grateful. Thanks,
"I never want to join a club who would have me as a member." One of the best quotes in history.

One of the finest films ever. Changed my life.

+Jai Guru Triggered

Thanks for sharing, I know it by heart and can't get enough of it.

Woody still has flashes of brilliance. Blue Jasmine anyone? One of his best.

great clip.

Woody Allen is wonderful ,,he has been a genius of comedy ,I hope most people can see this
Yeah what a classic, him , the movie, and this clip. It's amazing how little people born in the 80's and later know about anything earlier than their time, their missing out on the a time when America still had culture.

great flick, and i love his mannerisms
great film, loved how stream-of-consciousness it is
I'm a fan of everything you do
indeed a masterpiece...
i love so much this guy
One of the best movies ever made about relationships. Where's my shopping bag and the cafeteria?
There's something sublime about this movie.
Alvy Singer is someone who I would date. His character was so poignant and raw. The ending was so real,it broke my heart. But that's just life.
What a coincidence! I was just watching that episode the other day...
Woody was really at his zenith
with this classic.
The first vlog? Woody, you're a genius :)
Story of my life.
My favourite film.Ever.By some distance.

A cinematic masterpiece.....
Classic!
"I know.....and such small portions." I wish the writing for comedies was this good and I wish I could write like that.
What can I say...Woody is a genius!
Best dialogue of any movie.
Ahhhh the seventies cinema....when artists ruled and not businessmen....great movie.
So, so good.. a classic.
adoptive daughter.
and he's woody allen, he can do anything he wants. he's god.
@darcon81 There's not a doubt in my mind that Seinfeld would immediately and totally disagree with you on that. Not because he's a gracious, but simply because he's a pretty honest guy on these matters.
damn, that's exactly how I feel about my life. Even though I'm 22.
Shit I'm 22 now and somehow that's how I also feel

Woody the best we have ,,alive ,,,
we all need them, if you ask me :)
AMAZNG FILM
@SuperHeroMania
it's woody allen character... he's auteur director and that's one of his most important symbols.
Happy birthday woody!!
Great movie!
I really liked Woody a lot in the days before it got complicated.
I think the best voice-over joke he told in this film was "those who can't do, teach; and those who can't teach, teach gym." LOL
He explains it right after. It's a metaphor for life: no matter how terrible it is, it always ends too early.
woody has such great timing with his jokes.
Woody Allen you are a genuis
woody allen rules!
Think of it this way: If the food is bad enough to complain about, it makes no sense to complain that there's so little of it. That's why it's funny
So much has to go through their heads no doubt
I'm doing this monologue for theater class next month; it's dreadfully hard to memorize.
I love woody
@Ringo0008
it s paradox if we don t like smth we normally don t like more of it, so we complain about our lives but still want more of it. (like portions in the restaurant: bad and so small)
They are both genius
Genius genius
Witt and its relations to the subconcious!
My mom was in the movie! She was an extra but u can see her
which scene?
I hadn't realised until right now, but that Groucho joke, about not wanting to be a member of a club that would have him as a member? That perfectly encapsulates the entire history of my relationships with women.
Why would I want to date someone fucked up enough to want to date me?
thx^^
YES!
He looks so young!!!!!
Holy Shit! What if Woody Allen directed Jungle Fever?
Yes thank you for sharing. Actually I am a Catholic boy who is involved with a Jewish girl. Sort of the reverse of the characters in Annie Hall. I am probably seen as a Catholic priest sitting at the table. LOL!
0:05 I must think about this joke as my mother told me exactly so. But she meant it seriously.
Fast and underrated
Can someone explain to me the joke that has the "And such small portions"? I don't get it. Thanks!
Oh no. That means all my prayers have been wasted.
i liked this film
Allright Mr. Allen. This is it. You make me laugh. Oh. And you make me think. This is the site for the game show "You make me laugh,You make me think". Right?
I'm so sorry he's old now... I wished he could make more and more films...By the way, Annie Hall is a masterpiece.
Woody performed beautiflly
@suune what makes you think that?
@Ph3L1z14n0 They go to a Catskill mountain resort. The location itself isn't very important to the joke, but there is a subtext that the ladies are probably Jewish; this is a central theme in Woody's humor.
That isn't "the worst part" -- that's the Best Part : )
@Ph3L1z14n0 they go to a Catskills mountain resort - I'm not really sure what that is, but I don't think has much meaning to the joke. I might be being ignorant there, but you can still enjoy the joke without it lol

Thank you Greenleafff
no one can do what he did the way he did it
