    I played for a well known ballet company for several years. This became my favorite ballet of all time to play and to listen to. Many times after playing the music to a ballet for 3-4 shows it got boring. Even worse was when the ballet company would do a particular ballet over and over that had a boring score. This music is in a category all by itself because it became more and more beautiful the more times we performed it.

      An amazing ballet. This video is nearly 2 and a half hours long, and from I can tell, the music contains little or no "filler".

    The absolutely greatest piece off music ever written!! It has everything that appeals to ones higher self in abundance. Amazing,luscious melodies, transcendent harmonies and structure. Prokofiev always checks all the boxes and stirs ones heart as very few composers can.It's a testimony to our age and culture that his works of genius are not better known and loved in preference to the crass popular tripe that pollutes the tasteless musical world of today.

      While yes, I agree that Prokofiev's works are fantastic, comparison to popular music is a bit meaningless. Prokofiev was never a part of any 'pop' music scene and the differences between pop music and classical render them incomparable; the goalposts and marks on which to measure them couldn't be more different. The beauty of music today is that there's so much of it out there, with access to different styles and genres so much easier than it ever has been, that we can be free to listen to whatever brings us joy - whatever provides us with those moments of transcendence. That accessibility, plurality, and vast diversity of music is, in my opinion, a better testimony and reflection of our age and culture than panning one genre for not being enough like another.

      @@caesarxi1303 My opinion is that comparing modern pop music to classical music (of any era, I would say) is a bit meaningless. There's not very much to gain by doing so because they are very different schools of composition, practice, and consumption. In my experience, comparisons between classical and pop music are typically made by people who prefer classical music and dislike pop music, using their favoured genre to point out the shortcomings in another. I have found that the argument is very rarely made the other way. For me, this isn't an honest comparison, where the different genres are judged on their individual merits: most people I've found making this argument about classical versus pop don't believe pop has any merit at all, as seems to be the case here with the original comment.
      To your points specifically: I agree that we are not gods and that we are pretty much bound by our physical limitations as much as humans were 100 years ago (though I'd suggest that technology helps us to extend and surpass our limitations in terms of our actions - deep sea diving and the ISS, for example, or a synth) and it is more than a tad hyperbolic to imply that by arguing that we have more access to music today than we did in Prokofiev's time (a point which is provably true) I am comparing humanity to gods; in my opinion, a recent opinion holds no more or less weight than an old one (it's still just an opinion); diversity in music was my secondary point, not diversity overall; the connection between this discussion and the freshness or otherwise of democracy and feminism is lost on me, I'm afraid; my opinion does not condescend any other generation - I specifically acknowledge the value and merits of the past as well as the present and, so far, believe I am the only one in this thread who has done so; I can absolutely deny that there is in any way, shape, or form "an objective truth about which music is better", no matter the classification or genre, and I do deny this. My making that last statement is not a contradiction because my original opinion is exactly that no music is better than another, that the genric differences can make such comparisons difficult and, between classical and pop at least, such comparisons are a bit meaningless.
      Which leads me to think that my first comment may have been misinterpreted, at least in part. So, for clarity, when I said "the beauty of music today" I didn't mean the music *of* today: I meant *all* music today. Music, perhaps, with a capital 'M'. I mean everything which is considered music, by each individual who decides to make that classification, whether they stand alone or not. All the time, new music is being created in a vast range of styles across the world, contributing to a gamut that continues to grow and branch towards... well, possibly infinity. To say that one branch of that musical tree is somehow "better" than any other, or even better than one other, is in my opinion a fallacy: it ignores the interconnectedness of all music forms and is a denial of the validity of other art forms outside of classical - and, ironically, ignores that the same fundamental rules governing pop music also govern classical music; ignores that both forms are co-related technically, theoretically, and culturally. You may disagree - but that's the beauty of an opinion. I'm certainly not advocating for a truth that everyone should subscribe to here. This is my opinion, and that's all it is. I'll talk about it, expand on it, but I won't try to force you to adopt it. You're entitled to your opinion on this subject, and to your opinion of me. The one thing I would like to ask you about is the nature of what you called "objective truth" in music: what does that mean to you and how do you define it?

    • @valkyriesound3888
      @valkyriesound3888 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@caesarxi1303 I think you are distorting what I'm saying. Repeating your previous argument doesn't strengthen it; if I've made a "performative contradiction" could you explain how?
      I did not and do not deny provable objective truths like 1 + 1 = 2. I deny that one form of music is objectively "better", as you put it, than another. Your statement that you "don't believe" Brazilian funk is as good as classical music proves my point: you fall back on a belief, not an objective fact, therefore your position is subjective not objective.
      Why don't we explore this a bit more. What statements of objective truth, like 1 + 1 = 2, can you give to support your belief that Brazilian funk is not as good as classical music?

    • @valkyriesound3888
      @valkyriesound3888 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@caesarxi1303 I disagree with the sentiments of your first two sentences but agree with the sentiments in your last two. Perhaps our paths will cross again and we will both be more enlightened. In the meantime, let us at least agree to enjoy the ballet :)

    I've loved this piece since a child listening to its adaptations for the ballet: some of its 'muddier' parts are excluded. So, it isn't a perfect work but it's marvellous to me what Prokofiev conceived!

    19:34 this particular melody/sequence… why is it just so short and does it get repeated later on somewhere?
    it seems to come out of nowhere and hits me every time
    Please! answers!

      i believe it’s one of juliet’s themes and is repeated quite a bit in the rest of the piece!

    • @Sportfuck
      @Sportfuck 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Juliet's theme. The last bit, death of juliet is entirely comprised of that melody.

    Had no idea he used a part of this work and incorporated it in his first symphony (or the other way around, don't know yet, but I recognize this part for sure.)

      After a quick and superficial search, it appears that this common part ("Gavotte") is not stated on the libretto. Might it be added here by the conductor?

    • @cedericocosantorini8013
      @cedericocosantorini8013 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Quick search n°2: it seems to depend on what source is used........ Anyway, the Gavotte is directly taken from the Symphony "La Classique", Op. 25.

      Ну вообще-то первая симфония была написана в 1916-1917 годах, а балет намного позже. И во-вторых в симфонии гавот занимает примерно 2 минуты, а в балете немного больше - 4 минуты. Запись 1981 года th-cam.com/video/2qDJOoUpwrM/w-d-xo.html&feature=emb_logo

      @@mundanenames9752 In fact, the first Symphony was written in 1916-1917, and the ballet much later. In the Symphony, the Gavotte takes about 2 minutes, and in the ballet a little more - 4 minutes. Recording in 1981 th-cam.com/video/2qDJOoUpwrM/w-d-xo.html&feature=emb_logo

    At 11.53- I've never heard the clarinet so prominent in the texture during Le Combat- in any other performance I've ever heard. It's attractive but possibly the result of an odd engineering choice, given that the entire violin section should be playing the same notes! Where are they?!

Because you can hear all of the instruments. Perfectly balanced stereo. Crisp! Will share on FB. I shall also hunt down the score + recording version and share it as well.
