    Monks can use the 1d4 from the chromatic feat as while it can’t augment their unarmed strikes directly it can be used to augment a monk weapon which can be used with most monk features.

    • @ConstructedChaos

      This is definitely true! But I was really hoping for an extra 1d4 on each of my flurry of blows haha!

      It kinda feels like hunter's mark vs crossbow expert attack thing, but I'd have to do math.
      Not to mention monks having like 1 asi to spare for feats (talking pointbuy/array)

    One of my players took the Gift of the Chromatic Dragon without knowing I had planned the BBEG to be a group of dragons (Yes, like the Chroma Conclave. No, it wasn't on purpose. Yes, they're still different in a few ways). So I made the gift to have come from one of the 5 dragons, so that the player's character is conflicted between their draconic patron and their party.

      Ooohhhh very nice! We’re playing through something similar in a campaign I’m running (though, it doesn’t involve dragons.) You’ve gotta love that tie-in to a story element!

    I don’t have to make a hard decision to pick a feat or a ability score improvement. My dm lets us get both because he likes to spice things up. The downside is we fight against harder encounters.

      I like that idea! Makes the decision easy and just leaves more room for epic combats!

      I've come a similar idea/concept as a DM. Upon character creation, everyone has a feat, however, it must be a simple ish one. No GWM, or Sharpshooter, or CBE, or Sentinel, or anything super strong, that also has power flavor attatched.
      So things like Athlete, Actor, Chef, Durable, perhaps even Tough, are things I find acceptable. Still needs a bit of ironing out, but to me, it helps to differentiate people on a smaller scale. Much like people irl.

    • @ToothFairy473

      @@copycrow4486 Thats what my dm does sometimes, he lets us get one feat upon character creation then more feats later on. Tough is what I also get first.

      @@ToothFairy473 Cool. I'm an RP kinda guy, so whenever I choose a feat, or spell, or whatever, I always consider if it works for the character, and how it might affect them if it can.
      For example, GWM is a fantastic feat to have for melee users, but for story, I might totally miss it and never go near it.

    I recently created a dragonborn using Fizban instead of the PHB. In my case, it is a amethyst wizard. Since I went with a dragonborn, I didn't think the feats would have helped but did take a couple of the spells out of the books. I am currently at 6th level so the spells are decent enough.

      I’m planning to cover the spells later this week and maybe another video on some of the other nuggets in the book before moving on to strixhaven. All that came out when I was really busy with my day job so I’m circling back now that I have some time!

      @@ConstructedChaos After reading Fizban, at least the first few chapters relating to character creation, it gave me the impression it is a dip book. There aren't any new classes and only a couple of sub classes but the feats and some spells felt like if you only wanted a taste here you go.

    Basically the Fisban feats are … weak. Sorry it is true but they are far from the worst option and there are things to think about.
    First, if you are the kind of person that loves Dragonmarks of Ebberon or thought the Backgrounds of Strixhaven were great - these feats are great. Use them with Custom linage or add them as the benefit of a background and you will have a powerful but not totally broken character builds for your players.
    Second, when you get these feats REALLY matters. Chromatic is best early on so that you can get the most bang out of that fire weapon, meanwhile the other two work best at the higher levels.
    Third, they create some good tricks. Gem Dragon does not have to be used when you are running toward the enemy and you can use it when the enemy is (or hopefully was) mounted. You can use it when a Polearm Master tries to lock you down. And remember it is best used when you are trying to stay away from the enemy. So if you are a Wizard about to be hit by a warrior at 20 Away and you hit them with a ray of frost (-10) and you blast them back (-10) they are not coming back. See what I mean.
    Forth- Metallic is great for Arcane casters (now you can cast Heal though your familiar to bring back the tanks or healer) and half casters (all of them) no longer have to have that heal spell prepared since you get a free use. And Got to say if you are a Sword and board melee guy do the math Heavy armor + shield + PB (2-6) equals a lot less hits. Sure, it is not a shield spell but you can activate it hands full without a feat.
    Chromatic is basically proof that Tiamat hates her favorite to be hit by spells. That is the entire point. Fireball- resisted, call lightning - resisted! They think they are going to take you down - they likely will but you have a chance to RESIST ..IT.
    Lastly, The main reason to get them is if you want flair or if your DM gives them to you for flavor. I can’t say that picking them up will make you a terror in the field, but if you say have an Aasimar protector and you want to see your wings more often maybe get the metallic gift. They are great flair.
    As a PS- I thought you were going to talk about and add the Draconic Gifts to this one. I mean that was as close as I was going to get to Scaled Toughness.
    Be well

      I do plan to go more in depth with draconic gifts in a later video! Trying to title my videos as accurately as possible to avoid any assumptions of “clickbait”.
      That said, these feats aren’t “weak”. They just aren’t “OP”. They exist as flavorful options that can really go off with the right build.

    • @leodouskyron5671
      @leodouskyron5671 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ConstructedChaos I will say that is IMHO not the way to look at feats. I see feats as Critical, Strong/Support, weak/flavor and bad/traps.
      *Critical* is short for mission critical to make the build work in concept. If you are going to be Robin Hood like you need Sharp Shooter.
      *Strong/Support-* are the ones that support the core gameplay of your class but are optional. You don’t say need Fey Touched or Telekinesis on a spell caster but they can help you negate a crit or move an ally out of your area of effect supporting your spell casting.
      Weak/flavor are the ones you may never get but you pick them when you have maxed your primary or adds to the Roleplay so when you are at the table you are not like every other Fighter. Roleplay is what the hobby is about too.
      Bad/Traps. These don’t really have a purpose and you would be better off using other feats or just getting the points in most cases. It is possible that Keen Mind will work in a campaign but you can just get survival any number of ways and do better. And will knowing the sun will rise in 2 hours help - not like you can make it happen faster or slower. These feats just leave the person that had it unhappy or forgetting it.
      That is how I see feats and Love seeing how you and others see them too. This also is fun for me.

    • @ConstructedChaos
      @ConstructedChaos  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@leodouskyron5671 I feel both approaches are totally viable! It just depends on your setting, your DM, and your players! My players don’t often go the route of perfectly optimal play and I love that. It makes the game less predictable and leaves room for some “happy accidents” in builds.
      In any case, I think the general consensus is that these feats are nothing if not “balanced”-which is to say they’re nothing to write home about but also not terrible.

    I have a duergar psi fighter/Soulknife rogue who is planning on the gem dragon feat although flavored into a psionic shove. Honestly it fits in super perfect for how they fight already, both psi fighter and soulknife rogue gain abilities based on proficiency and have ways of manipulating the field and as the most upfront melee character, being able to repel enemies further away while also raising my casting stat is real nice and gives a good use of my reaction

    • @ConstructedChaos
      @ConstructedChaos  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a good point! Half feats are always good in this way and the game dragon gift has some use case there-especially for builds like that!

  • @miguelangelus959

    I'm not sure why you would say that (on Draconic Healing) casting cure wounds using your normal spell-slots, you would use your common spellcasting ability instead of the one you chose for the feat.
    The way I read it, Spell Slots don't have a class attached to them, and when you cast the cure wounds you got from the feat, you are using the feat to cast it, not your class' Spellcasting feature. And the feat states that the ability score you use for the spell is the same you chose to increase, so you should use it even when you cast it using spellslots

    • @ConstructedChaos
      @ConstructedChaos  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You’re 100% correct. I’m not sure where I picked that up from but as a general rule, spells that you cast are not restricted to modifiers by what slots you use but rather what class or feature gave you the spell.
      So, yea. Thanks for that heads up! Luckily, I should be able to just trim that bit out of the video in a moment to keep that tidbit from confusing anyone!

    Hey Chaos. We're on opposite ends of the spectrum here. i wouldn't actually waste a precious feat on the other 2 but i would consider gift of the gem dragon for some builds simply because it's a half feat. that's the main value. the push and dmg is icing. of course i'd consider other half-feats 1st since we typically only pick 1 through the course of levelling up to round out an odd stat created during character creation. i'd go through feytouched, shadowtouched, telekinetic, resilient 1st. if i don't need the spells provided by fey/shadowtouched, my bonus action is typically spoken for so i'd pass on telekinetic and i'm not a wis caster, gift of the gem dragon would be my half-feat of choice.
    the reaction gives your reaction something to do when:
    1. an attack will still hit even if you use shield
    2. its not a spell so counterspell is out
    3. its not an elemental attack so absorb elements is out
    i think maximizing action economy is crucial so i'd pick that given the process flow above. the only other int/cha/wis half-feat i'd consider over gem dragon would be skill expert: stealth should i be working with a party who takes a stealthy approach to the game but that's party dependent.
    I do agree that feats though are great rewards for DM to give as players are always curious to try out feats but can't seem to fit the non-essential ones to their builds given how few we get in the course of a typical campaign while also competing with asi.

    • @ConstructedChaos
      @ConstructedChaos  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You raise some great points here as always! I just can’t think of any builds that I’d go out of my way to get the gem feat on. It just feels like it’s too niche and not the best out of the few you mentioned. The other feats I can definitely see myself going for on several builds. But I have yet to do that so maybe not!

    • @TheRobversion1
      @TheRobversion1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ConstructedChaos i wouldnt go out of my way either. Its more of i typically have a 17 (i never pick variant human as a race) in a stat so my 1st asi is typically a half-feat. That basically trims down my feat choices to less than 10. If i'm not playing those who have the racial feats from xanathars, then the list is trimmed down further. But i'd only go after gift of the gem dragon because i need a half-feat. If i already got another half-feat like lets say elven accuracy or feytouched then i wouldnt touch gift of the gem dragon with a 10 ft pole. I've only ended up considering it in a couple of my builds since i played a caster who has all the good spells that they need from fey/shadowtouched while also being a cha caster (clockwork sorcerer with a 1 level celestial warlock dip) in a non-stealth party with their bonus action consistently occupied (quicken spell, magic stone, misty step). So its not that gift of the gem dragon is critical to my build but none of the other half-feats benefit me. So i'm just after the +1 cha and a bonus effect that i can use once in a while (i didnt have any other odd scores to round up). Resilient cha is meh and actor doesnt give me anything that i cant kind of replicate through RP so gift of the gem dragon is the obvious choice.
      Thanks for the compliment!
