It's neat that you noted that The Messiah and the Mahdi are two different characters in Islam, cause in Dune the Fremen Prophecy concerning the Mahdi ends up referring to two different people. Paul is the one who points the way, but the 2nd character is the one who protects humanity from it's greatest enemy.

Only an outworlder could ever be the voice from the outer world and Paul IS the voice from the outer world. Paul is the one who points the way, and Paul is the one who discovers The Golden Path. The "Mahdi" who protects Humanity from it's greatest enemy really has to come from the Fremen though. It's a really neat inclusion because it references such an important moment in the overall series.

One thing you don't know maybe about the region where I live (North Africa) there are people called Amazigh meaning Free Men ... Aka Fremen ! ;) I guess Franck Herbert might have had an experience in a desert like the Sahara... Worth to investigate. Isn't it?

@@Tausify Part 2 rectifies part 1s casting I think. You don't want the Fremen to be monolithically MENA people for 2 reasons. 1. In the book the middle east is not the only influence on their culture, they're a product of many cultures, even as far as Tibet and the Caucus mountains in Russia. 2. Having multiple ethnicities, some of which are Arab and North African, is the right balance to do it. It would be nice for Chani or Stilgar to be MENA, like Shishakli was, but the movie focused on star power combined with top talent. I think it's fair enough they didn't go scouting to deep and used recognisable faces rather than unknowns. Could have had some more MENA people in both parts tho still.
I saw a mixture of Christianity and Islam in dune. It’s essentially following old abrahamic traditions, Paul rising from the dead in the second movie was heavily inspired by Jesus. Jessica playing a “mother Mary” role

Nicely done. I'm a long time Dune fan, read the books when I was a teenager. I am retired US Military and have a lot of time in predominately Muslim countries embedded with various security forces over the years and count many Arab muslims as friends. It's distressing how many Americans are so ignorant about Islam and bedouine culture. Thank you for your perspective.
I understand where you are coming from brother, but at the end of the day it is a movie produced by an American company, with a Canadian director and half European and half American actors. I see no wrong with it and I am Mexican. In the end of Dune they state The Holy War has begun, well in the book its called Jihad. There is no telepathy in Dune. People believe the Bene Gesserit are telepathic and they don’t do anything to correct the mistake. But it’s all observation of body language and physical context.
Dune's religious mythology is inspired by Islamic eschatology. It's not meant to be 1:1. Also, you can be both a mahdi and a messiah in a general sense, but of course not in Islam.
Paul isn’t the messiah. He is the result of religious and gene manipulation. He is also a generation too early as he was meant to be a girl and marry a Harkhonnen heir to end the feud and birth a controllable emperor with mentat, Bene Gesserit and Steersmen abilities. Well, the Fremen were perceived as terrorists by the ruling class, and in a technical sense, they were. They disrupted spice mining, etc. We perceive them as freedom fighters, but that's a fine line at best, and maybe no line at all. I think using Levantine actors would be dangerous for two reasons: 1. It might reinforce the stereotypes of Arabs, etc. being terrorists. 2. It might soften the depiction of actual Levantine terrorists, e.g., Hamas. So on one hand, I agree with you. When I read the book, I envisioned the Fremen as futuristic Bedouins. Extremely hospitable to their own, extremely untrusting of outsiders, and extremely rigid in their traditions because any kind of moral or practical failure could result in death. The world was too unforgiving. But I also understand why avoiding casting Levantine actors avoided offending people. I personally think those who might be offended by using Levantine actors are insufferable woke parasites, but why rock the boat if it isn't necessary?

Politics came from his time as a speech writer for a United States congressman. The Islamic influences (and a couple of whole sentences) came from Sabers of Paradise, which is a book based on an Islamic rebellion in Chechnya. A lot of the psychology came from Jung. Looking into his influences and further looking into reading similar things about history, psychology, religions, etc. is a hell of a rabbit hole, but well worth it.
You are correct I mean I am not sure about Muad'dib but fremen are descendant of ZenSunni's which was a religious group that had aspects of Sunni Islam and Buddhism.
I'm not a muslim but it's clear Frank Herbert was inspired by islam when writing the fremen. Now obviously this is fiction and Paul's story is a cautionary tale as seen in Dune Messiah. I hope you enjoy the books, they're great.

I enjoyed the review. I haven't read the books, but have watched both movies. Dune 2 was phenomenal I immediately wanted to read the books after watching the movies. Considering the whole plot of both films, I can see they may have left some stuff out. Both movies could be 30mins to an hour longer. But the movie didn't fail to move me or make me any less interested in the story. Was very captivating. I saw people comparing it to empire strikes back and two towers, which I think is not fair(DUNE inspired the science fiction works after it). This movie should be judged on its own merits. I don't want to spoil anything, but the news was out some time ago that we may get a Dune 3 Based on Dune: Messiah(?). After watching this, I for sure need more Dune. I want to see where the Atreides story goes next. Bro, can I ask you questions regarding the book plot? I currently don't have time to delve into the books but I am interested to know a book reader's perspective on the movies. Maybe after you watch Dune 2
You've been reading, at least the first book. Been quite a while since I read the books, I can't remember when it was mentioned in the books. It could have been the first book and so you will know this, or maybe it's later and you don't know. Also I didn't see anyone else in the comments mention it so I'll say it. The religion in question is Zensunni, so it's a future where the religion is a blend of Buddhism and Islam. The Fremen were wanderers. They had spent some time in their travels on other planets before arriving on Arrakis. Telepathy isn't a thing in the books, things are communicated non verbally by things like gestures. That wasn't really communicated in the movies, I guess it's trying to show it as if it's telepathy but I'm taking the book canon for it, and it's just not portrayed properly. I get your point about the representation but the Fremen were really wanderers for a long time. Watch the 1984 version of Dune. That one... had a lot of issues. But it did go with a lot of monologuing. Too much of it. It's one of the big criticisms that movie gets as well as not really being faithful to the book/s. There's also a made for TV miniseries, it's a lot more faithful to the books as there is a Dune and Children of Dune made for TV miniseries. Long time since I watched, but I recall it being good for being faithful to the books. Late by me now, so I'll watch your review of part 2 tomorrow.
Yes, watch my review of Dune 1984. Its not only the monologuing but the acting overall is terrible. Also the telepathy scene happens when Jessica is in the other room and can't see Paul when Paul's hand was in the box. Or were they both thinking the same thing?
@@Tausify My memory is awful so I can't recall what was thought/said by Jessica, the Gom Jabbar test I believe is something that Bene Gesserit undergo, so she would have done it too, and having done it, she would know what Paul is experiencing.
Man I really hope you cover the books! I’d love to hear your thoughts as you go through the books, because the Islamic inspirations don’t stop at the first book. Frank Herbert definitely takes a lot of inspiration for real world cultures and religions. From Buddhism to Hebrew and of course Islam, so much of Dune’s lore is tied up in our real world history! It’s really cool, I think.

I think Paul does some bad things in Dune Messiah based on the way people talk about it. Going as far as saying that it not even movie friendly.

You've been reading, at least the first book. Been quite a while since I read the books, I can't remember when it was mentioned in the books. It could have been the first book and so you will know this, or maybe it's later and you don't know.

The religion in question is Zensunni, so it's a future where the religion is a blend of Buddhism and Islam.
The Fremen were wanderers. They had spent some time in their travels on other planets before arriving on Arrakis.
Telepathy isn't a thing in the books, things are communicated non verbally by things like gestures. That wasn't really communicated in the movies, I guess it's trying to show it as if it's telepathy but I'm taking the book canon for it, and it's just not portrayed properly.
I get your point about the representation but the Fremen were really wanderers for a long time.
Watch the 1984 version of Dune. That one... had a lot of issues. But it did go with a lot of monologuing. Too much of it. It's one of the big criticisms that movie gets as well as not really being faithful to the book/s.
There's also a made for TV miniseries, it's a lot more faithful to the books as there is a Dune and Children of Dune made for TV miniseries. Long time since I watched, but I recall it being good for being faithful to the books.

Yes, watch my review of Dune 1984. Its not only the monologuing but the acting overall is terrible.
Also the telepathy scene happens when Jessica is in the other room and can't see Paul when Paul's hand was in the box. Or were they both thinking the same thing?
@@Tausify My memory is awful so I can't recall what was thought/said by Jessica, the Gom Jabbar test I believe is something that Bene Gesserit undergo, so she would have done it too, and having done it, she would know what Paul is experiencing.
Man I really hope you cover the books! I’d love to hear your thoughts as you go through the books, because the Islamic inspirations don’t stop at the first book. Frank Herbert definitely takes a lot of inspiration for real world cultures and religions. From Buddhism to Hebrew and of course Islam, so much of Dune’s lore is tied up in our real world history! It’s really cool, I think.
