    remember when i first went to car auctions in the 1970s virtually no public were there, just dealers and friends of dealers, joe public wasn't interested in them, they thought auctions were for scrappers, Asians would turn up looking for bargains for cash-n-carry runs and that was about it, the bidding started low and there were some great bargains to have on category cars especially, people were scared of anything that the insurance had paid out on, then in the 1980s it just totally switched and they were full of joe Bloggs public, everyone was an expert on second hand cars and the prices rocket. Facebook-marketplace has better bargains now than our local car auctions,

      I would say over the last 10 years the private customers have been pushed back out again, its mostly trade now but the fees have played a large part in that, very expensive for private punters but still some money to be saved over retail. I do get the odd thing private but i do still rely on the auctions and part ex's from other dealers mostly. Thanks for watching Sick6 👍

    I used to visit auctions years ago ''90's'' and do a bit of buying & selling, few mates got me into it but from what I now understand from watching a few channels on here is these days you require an appointment, is that right ?
    The 2nd hand car market just now is completely bonkers mental, I was searching for a car just before Covid when prices were ok / standard, these days the car market has took the same direction as the housing market with people paying way over market value, I've looked at thousands of cars online along with a few local dealers and it's crazy how things have changed, so many cars that are 10 years or older with over 100k on the clock priced up at really silly unrealistic money, I thought the bubble would burst last year but if anything it's got worse.
    Even the days of haggling seems now gone, a local dealer to me had a 10 year old Audi A4 in the showroom a few months back, I went in to get some details on the car as I was interested, from memory they wanted 12k for it, ZERO haggling! it was take it or leave it, I looked into some of the cars history and it had 5 precious owners and had 81k on the clock, thing is it was gone a few days after my enquiry on it.
    Also considered a ford focus ST estate that was up in Aberdeen, I wasn't mad on the colour but it looked worth a view, the dealer had it marked up at 13k and I sent him a msg asking if there was any room movement on the price before we made the journey, one word reply.....................NO!
    Bring back Arthur Daley or the days when Mike Brewer said .....................Hold out Your hand! and had a deal with someone standing with good old fashioned CASH!

    • @carukchannel
      @carukchannel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the auctions i got to you do not need a appointment thats a new one on me, some auctions ask you to register with 2 forms of id but thats pretty standard these days to prevent money laundering. as for dealers not haggling on price the margins in cars these days is small i have dealer friends who have around 600 profit in a car but will sell say 10 a week, others may have 1k in a car but sell 4 a week. the rules on liability has changed greatly since the 90s a dealer can be liable for a car upto 6 months, small margin and long potential liabilty means most will not haggle on prices.

    • @G4RY1159
      @G4RY1159 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@carukchannel It's defo changed a lot since the 90's as back then anyone could just walk in and buy.
      I was reading last night that Central Car auctions in Glasgow is traders only now and I went there a lot years back.
      I visited Glasgow and Shotts and sometimes it was even possible to buy from Shotts and put the car through Glasgow a few weeks later and make a nice profit.
      99% Of the time back then Id buy and then drive the car away before the auction had ended, I had no reason for staying and would drive into a local garage and remove the window stickers lol.
      Did get stung a few times but that's all part of learning.
      Bought a big Rover Fastback one night it looked stunning, paid £800 for it and on the way home the auto box was badly playing up, mechanic mate said it was goosed but I still sold it ''as seen'' for £1400 about 2 weeks later.
      Good times back then, simpler!

    • @carukchannel
      @carukchannel  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      To be honest no, we have had maybe 4 cars in all the years where I have had to refund, sometimes the customer was just a nightmare and expectations on a £600 for example car were to high and its easy to refund and sell to someone else. we do get customers who may get a small fault it happens to all dealers regardless of price point they are selling, if your just polite and helpful 99% of time you can sort it. It helps for me we have a workshop and mechanical knowledge so it doesn't cost the earth when say a customers coil spring breaks randomly for example in warranty

      auctions can be a decent place to buy a cheap car, if your going to buy say a 2k car then a auction could be a good start. for cheaper cars you need to be very careful as you could find yourself on the wrong side of the car that could be fit for scrap yard or too expensive to repair. You can only bid if you hold a second hand car dealer's licence so at least you are only bidding against other dealers who need to make a buck....

      It was to be fair, looking back I should of bid on that, at £1k that would of been around £1180 out the door with the fees, so still a decent potential margin, looks 1700-1800 in the current market even with the cat N marker

    what does the cat D mean fell great channel

    • @carukchannel
      @carukchannel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi brian, Cat D means its been in a accident at some point where the owner has claimed against a insurance company who have assessed it and written the car off. Cat D (now called Cat N) means non structural or light damage, most of the time insurance companies will write off a old vehicle over 10 years old and under a particular value as its not financial viable for them to repair, (even if its 50% of its value to repair they will normally still write it off). they can still be driven on the road as long as a Mot test is carried out following the write off or repair etc.
