How do we take seeing for granted? It's one of the 5 senses of the human body. If it's stripped away from us we have no choice but to deal with it. Ain't nobody take it for granted bruh.
Especially going blind later in life. I had a great grandmother that went blind in her teen years after an unknown illness. She was black and back in the early 1900s it was very difficult for blacks to get doctors that would help, and she gradually went blind. Even though she went blind she was known as the greatest cook in town.
She wanted to help him, but knew he had to help himself. This is what a good mother does, letting him learn and grow cause the world isn't going to be nice to him.
Imagine how hard that must've been, to watch your baby struggle, unable to see and is calling out to you desperately, but you want them to be able to grow stronger so you stand in silence. That would've crushed me.

When you lose an ability like sight your hearing increases. The brain is working full time to help you manuver from not being able to see. Our bodies are amazing 💖The brain is even more special.
I think that was too show that he was now completely blind. Before she said he was just going blind but I think the sounds getting louder meant he was loosing his vision completely
B.C. HarrisArt. Your telling me how blindness works yet my sisters and my parents are both visually impaired and my dad has slowly lost more of his vision.
I think she wanted to help him see and understand that there will be times when nobody is around to help him get up and not to live in fear because of that, but also to help him learn that even without his sight, he can take care of himself when he needs to and not rely on other people every time something goes wrong. I also wonder if Ray thought he was being punished with blindness for failure to save his brother.
Listen back then they didn’t have special things to make life easier for the blind and deaf. His mama loved him, but I hate to tell you but mama is not gonna be there always to hold your hand. She helped as much as she could, but he had to learn the rest on his own and he did.
Ironically, that's how moms really hold our hands forever. A mom that does everything for you will only be able to do it for a while, afterwards, you're nothing but a wimp without mommy's help. If mommy teaches you to do it your own, even when she can't do it anymore, you will still be taken care of.
This is very sad, and I’m very grateful that God has allowed me to have a life where I can see and hear everything around me everyday! I know someone already made this comment but I just wanted to comment that I’m grateful too!
I have a blind friend. He says some days are better than others and he pretty much relies on his other 4 senses for everything. He’s been blind since birth but manages to make the best of everything and gets around by himself with the help of a cane and is sometimes better and doing everyday tasks better than most people!
It’s weird to think this way but at least Ray had an advantage- the ability to see for so long. He knew what things looked like, he saw colors, he knew his world with sight. Ply made it harder to transition without it tho
missychelle33 "Ray had an advantage" Yes and No. Yes, he was able to see BUT He became blind *During* his childhood. And I don't think it would be the best memory of your childhood...
Why is everybody bitching and complaining. Did he not become very successful in life. As a natter of fact he was rich. Love and grew up on his music. The talent this man has. What yall have nothing.
Not easily cured, but modern medicine can slow it's effects. My brother has glaucoma and it's awful stuff man... He at least made it to his 20s before he started losing peripheral vision. Even today with surgeries and drops childhood glaucoma will typically render you blind by your 50s or 60s. The treatments aren't cures, they just delay blindness. Hopefully for many people's sake medical innovations are made in the next decade.
@@danielfindley6931 blindness does occur from glaucoma but it is a relatively rare occurrence. If it's caught early then you really have about a 10% chance of getting any sort of damage. You won't go completely blind but ever time you might get some damage.

this scene is a really good example of how to let kids (blind or sighted) figure out things on their own. she’s right there, ready to step in if he’s in serious danger, but she’s giving him enough space to explore and experiment on his own. the transition from doing things because their parents said to to basing actions on their own lived experience is EXTREMELY important for kids. great scene.
Every time I watch this movie this scene always makes me cry 😢 because when Ray Charles went blind and he started to call his mother for help but when his senses came to him and when he hugged his mother that scene always touches my heart.
Mom: I'll help you if you messed up twice, but the third time you're on your own. And that's how it is in the world. Yoo, she gave her child the realest life lesson. Ain't nobody gonna take pity on you for a damn thing. 💯

It's like... at 4:08, it was that exact moment, that she knew her baby would be OK and would be able to take care of himself and not have to depend on the kindness of strangers. Hats off to the actress. Just goes to show there are no small parts, only small actors. 'Cause she BODIED this scene!
I lost it when his mom started crying tears of joy. It's always good to know that you're child is going to be okay even when you are gone. I also like that even though she was giving her son tough love, she still watches over him to make sure he's safe and nothing bad happens to him.

What’s so sad is that Ray couldn’t even look at his baby in his arms. I could never imagine not seeing my baby
Beautifully understood

Ironically, that's how moms really hold our hands forever. A mom that does everything for you will only be able to do it for a while, afterwards, you're nothing but a wimp without mommy's help. If mommy teaches you to do it your own, even when she can't do it anymore, you will still be taken care of.

Ply made it harder to transition without it tho

sad to know that if he was born today he wouldnt of gone blind, he had glaucoma which can easily be cured with eye drops or surgery
Tell me why i read that as "guacamole"
@@nadiaalejo9406 you're hungry like me
@@danielfindley6931 blindness does occur from glaucoma but it is a relatively rare occurrence.
