Glad Tim is feeling better. At this point in time, people are becoming much more aware of the fact that unprocessed emotions get stuck in our tissues, so this experience is not that uncommon. I've had quite a few similar experiences on various substances and in deep meditation states. Just mentioning meditation because you don't need to go to South America, just meditate and focus on the part of your body that's in pain and approach the pain with curiosity. Make it a practice and the pain will teach you things. In time, the tissues will release, and yes, oftentimes it happens in an instant, but not before all of the suppressed feelings are felt.

I read Sarno's book at least 10 times, cover to cover. The idea being that I wanted to completely and absolutely absorb all of the information on a conscious and subconscious level, (Sarno's suggestion as I recall). That was over 10 years ago and I haven't had back pain since. The reason Sarno (at a point years into his treatment process) chose not to treat those who didn't believe was simply because of the numbers. After years of treating people he found that those who scoffed at the idea but still went through with the treatment, failed. It was a waste of time. Anyone who has chronic back pain should see a specialist, but read the book!

I had chronic pain - fibromyalgia, sciatica, radiculopathy, slipped discs in L4/L5 - for years. It put me on the floor. I was disabled, walking with a cane from CVS, in my upper 20s, taking all kinds of pain meds. Same as Tim, did all the P.T., MRI's, massage therapy, specialists, etc. Nothing worked. I grieved the loss of my body. Going down to the jungle was a hail mary for me. Went in hardly able to walk into the retreat center. Left skipping like a little boy.
Also like Tim says, I'm not recommending plant medicine as a panacea. Do your research. Try a lot of stuff before you consider it. And prepare yourself to be challenged. It is not for the faint of heart. But for some, it can be life saving and give you your life back, for which I'm forever grateful.

Tim it is tough with the back issues! I too suffer from horrific lower back pain at times. My entire 2022 was taken out from a bad excacerbation of an old injury. Did all the MRI's and stuff. Three bulging discs and one extreme. What helped me was pushing through the days with minor pain. I had been doing the opposite and resting as soon as I aggravated it but went to one session of PT and they said we don't do that anymore. You gotta get out there and move. Revelation as I'd been doing it all wrong. Started pushing through it and then doing lots of core exercises and seated leg presses. I'm finally at least as good as I was 5 or 10 years ago and that huge 2022 blow up is finally behind me.
I've heard some amazing stories about Ayahuasca though with some teens who had extreme depression and sometimes suicidal. Been through all the therapy and anti-depressants. Then as last resort went to Arizona and did Ayahuasca. One weekend with that and total 180. Depression gone and been gone ever since. Nothing short of a miracle. I am too terrified to take it and hearing you talk 9 out of 10 people from taking it I am unlikely to ever touch it. But for those who need it for various reasons it can be a complete miracle cure for mental or physical.

Disagree wholeheartedly on the negative Dr. Sarno comments. When I first read his book, “Healing Back Pain: The Mind-Body Connection”, I thought he was a quack, but I had tried everything else - everything. So I took his advice and “talked to my brain”. Cured myself thanks to him. My boss said that my case was a miracle. Actually, it was Sarno’s book.

Tim, I read John Sarno book must be 15 years ago now as I had similar back issues. It helped massively. When medicine and physical changes don’t work or symptoms come back, you have to ask “what else could be causing this?” Modern life and modern thinking, not always the best. Glad you have found your solution and I know from my own experience it will gradually improve, but you also have tell yourself this. 👊🏼

I've noticed that some yoga exercises for stretching can create problems for my back if I do them regularly. And they can fix my back if there randomly is a problem - as long as I'm not doing them regularly .
I've also seen other Yoga practitioners with years of experience with back issues.
Which is to say... It might also be worth reviewing your exercise regimen.
Sometimes you end up doing the wrong exercise for too long.

When i came back, the tension was gone. I couldn't believe how loose and relaxed my shoulders felt, it was incredible. It is important to note however that the other 99% was not a pleasant experience, much like Tims.

The lower back represents your ability to feel safe and supported in life. Your spine holds you up ie: supports you in life so any issues pertaining to the back is an emotional issue linked with safety. Kinesiology will also be a great tool to address what emotion is stuck in the back and what needs to be released.

Small possibility, but may be worthwhile to consider, from someone who has been there, and recovered.

I've had a similar experience but during a recent 10-day vipassana retreat wherein I learned that my back pain (from kyphosis and mild scoliosis) both contributes to and is caused by my affectation toward anger, impatience, irritability, etc... After learning to sit through and become equanimous with the pain during unsupported sittings of strong determination, wherein you don't so much as flinch, both the back pain and the irritability have wholly vanished under normal circumstances, only returning when physically or mentally taxed. Mind conditions body conditions mind. Consider dusting off the vipassana without fasting and/or microdosing. You might be able to face and heal your childhood trauma and resultant attachment issues.

I disagree about Ayahuasca. Preparation, intent, setting and especially dose are all important. First time the dose should be small so that the curandero can gauge how you react. Then if deemed safe the dose may be increased. It is not supposed to be traumatizing, which is a clear indication that mistakes have been made.
I went into my first ceremony asking Mother Ayahuasca to go easy on me and it was magical. Then the work started and the following five were intense but completely necessary to shake me from the self destructive life that I had been living.
If you are contemplating going to the jungle to bring Mother Ayahuasca in to your life then do your research, read reviews, watch blogs online and understand that the ceremonies are just the start of your healing journey, integration of your experiences is essential otherwise you're just dabbling in psychotropic drugs.
I suspect that Tim's curandero added toé (angel trumpet) to the brew which induces vivid hallucinations but also an increased risk of psychosis. You should enquire beforehand what is added to the brew and if they will not tell you then go somewhere else.

Sarno's work is legit. I say that as someone who has had about 10 different very intense and long-lasting psychosomatic complaints over the years that all ended up being nothing but fear, anger and sadness trapped and manifesting as physical symptoms. I find it interesting that Tim dismisses Sarno as not scientific enough but is willing to do an ayahuasca ceremony that he admits is very risky and is too intense even for some shamans themselves. Like why not just follow Sarno's method. So much safer and the overall result (relieving the backpain and gaining a deep understanding of one's emotions) would have been the same lol.

Its even more complicated than that but to give a hint..

Hmm.. I herniated L5S1 and was in so much pain for about 10 years I just wantes to end it all. I asked the church to pray for me and I brought olive oil so my friend and pastor could annoint my back with it, and God did SOMETHING that day. I'm back in the gym and look like I'm 30 again and I'm in my 40's. Only God heals. Repent and trust in Jesus.

Great message and one that resonates deeply with me. I found the guest to be extremely distracting and the wrong energetic match for the depth of this message; his stupid one-liners were annoying and his comment around doing ayahuasca on a podcast was ignorant and disrespectful, not a fan. Glad you’re healing Tim and carrying this medicine in a good grounded humble way 🙏

I couldn’t walk or at least had suffering back pain for 5 months. Was so afraid it would last forever. Tried all the things until I found what worked for me which was surprising. All the known fixes didn’t help at all - got the MRI, lasers, trigger point therapy, accupuncture, world class chiropractic, a doctor said I needed back surgery etc. Then I randomly stumbled upon Alexander Technique and within months I was pain free. Absolutely wild. When I first found it I didn’t I didn’t understand it but was desperate and had tried everything else. So grateful I found Noel, she restored my future giving me and my back ease.

Hmmmmnn, Tim im wondering whether there is a connection. Your ayaushauca visions to me with your ex gf, implies that you just want and need to be supported- to be cushioned and to be comforted. Maybe your back pain and the relief through the pilates ball is feeding into that loop. I dunno. Try and check out somatic exercises. They are lovely and deeply comforting.

People needing drugs to feel..... well, you're a numb human..... now you need to become emotionally literate without the need for an mental enema. Don't mistake this for wisdom.... this is potty training for adults. This is basic 101 psychology....we do this every day in life as an emotionally healthy person....as common place as eating and resting. These people are finding out about the very basic way the vrain and emotional circuitry works. Knowing how to do that as a continuous norm is what is required. These drugs are just laxatives for emotionally constipated adults. How do you think emotional tension is held....obviously it holds in the body....where the hell else would it be...outside of the nervous system???
