Hearing you mention National Travel reminded me… When I was in 4th grade, WVU went to the Sugar bowl (the one vs Florida). National Travel had an essay competition for single parents, asking the question “Why do you think you should win the tickets?”. My Mom won, National Travel flew us to New Orleans, put us up in the Sheraton for a week, gave us tickets to the game, tickets to a pre-game party, and gave us like $300 cash (which is at least $500 adjusted to today’s inflation). I will never forget that act of generosity.
I can totally see a bowl sponsor these days refusing to allow a team to play in it because the head coach or a player tweeted an opinion they didn't like. I'm telling you, it's happening.
Breaking News: Northwestern (alma mater of Darryl Morey!) has been banned from the Huawei Bowl because their Head Coach stated negative opinions about China’s invasion of Taiwan Too soon?
@@sawyertuide7636 The way the world is going, people will be getting banned from the internet for speaking out against China's invasion of the United States next year. Not even joking.
For a bowl game (assuming they rallied for him like they did with Dickert) that their original opponent was coved out of. I'm sure he probably would have started doing the upside down U sign and called them chickenshits in hiding.............
At 11:53 the newspaper say West Virginia is not responsible for any of the 24,000 tickets not sold and I saw nowhere in the next article where it said $35 anywhere.
A note on markets: West Virginia University mainly caters to its state, but it's actually on the southern end of the Pittsburgh DMA. I'm not sure how much of the Pittsburgh DMA follows the Mountaineers, though. As for Syracuse, the Orange's popularity isn't confined to its own DMA. It's popular in much of New York as well.
I still remember Rich Rodriguez tanking the Pitt rivalry game in '07 with WVA being ranked #1 at the time just so he could start the Michigan job sooner. I repeat, a team's head coach actually tanked a game with his team's national title chances on the line so he could leave for another job sooner. This was a thing that happened.
@@DolFan316 I'm not sure that the Mountaineers tanked. They just played like garbage at the worst possible time. I know Pitt's its biggest rival and rivalry games can be tricky, but that was an awful look.
Meanwhile, BC is in a big market but in a market where no one cares about college football (except when Doug Flutie was playing for them), and it's a private school without the big alumni bases of the big state universities.
@@marcus813 The players didn't tank, their coach did. He literally announced right after the game that he was taking the Michigan job. As a Memphis fan I know about things like this, Justin Fuente tanked the last half of the 2015 season right after beating top 10 Ole Miss. At that point he might as well have been working for Virginia Tech, who hired him at the end of that season '"officially". When a coach tanks the players know it and you can't expect them to succeed under those circumstances.
The ironic thing is that a few years later, WVU was getting better bowl bids because of its fan base’s reputation of traveling to games. Of course, there were not a lot of great fan bases in that old Big East.

What a fascinating story--You told it so well. Your depth and detail for story-telling is awesome. This was a really interesting video that you put together. Nice job!
Excellent video! I read an article on sports illustrated which reported that all these bowl games are non profit corporations and that these schools have to pay for a minimum number of tickets. It sometimes leads to schools losing money by accepting bowl invitations
Not even close. A team charter usually runs $250,000 for a Delta 757 (probably much more now w/higher fuel prices). Add in two or three additional planes for coaches & staff families (usually a second or third their charter outfit), hotel rooms, food, @ least two semi trucks to handle all the team equipment, trainers equipment, office supplies, etc…. If the bowl games close enough to campus, the equipment managers & band will travel by charter bus, if not; then add in an additional plane or two. It adds up quickly.
That first game was going to be an outlier attendance-wise. JoePa v. Bobby B. near the end of their respective careers? Plus, PSU fans travel very well and FSU was just up the road.
You have to do a video on the 1994 Pitt v WVU Game I was there and I couldn't believe what I saw. I watched the full game on TH-cam recently and still can't believe it.
My brother and I were at that game. He's a WVU fan; I'm the smart one in the family. WVU led big at halftime, and I had a paper due for grad school on Monday, so we left. We listened to the game on the way home, and couldn't believe we left.
Man Chad Johnston had a cannon for an arm. How good was Aaron Beasley? Yeah, do a video on that pitt game. It was literally the worst game of all time. But we won, so it was awesome 😂
WVU had zero chance to win the national championship in '93. Had Nebraska and FSU tied, Notre Dame would have won it based upon the win over the Seminoles in South Bend. Notre Dame STILL should have won the title over FSU even with the loss to BC.
That was a mediocre South Carolina team in the Carquest Bowl and that's being kind. The Gamecocks got that bid based upon beating a mediocre Clemson team in the finale, plus a one-point road win over a bad LSU team which was scared shitless to throw the ball.
Okay so you never answered the biggest question. What was the attendance of the game and how many tickets did West Virginia fans buy of the allotment the athletic department purchased up front?
They ALL need to be done away with, especially now that players refusing to participate in them has been normalized. Just have the playoff games only and screw the rest.
I imagine the vacations that West Virginia fans plan are as easily changed as driving in a different direction...if they have vacation plans in the winter to begin with. It wasn't free money for West Virginia. It was $800,000 that CarQuest didn't have to pay to West Virginia.
