PUCCINI "Nessun Dorma" (from "Turandot") (for Solo Trumpet with Piano and Brass Quintet)

A mentor and friend, Louis Casini, died a few days ago and so I offer this week’s piece, Puccini’s “Nessun Dorma,” in solemn dedication to his memory. Lou lived to 74 and was the most gracious gentleman, a fine musician with skill in multiple genres, a technology wizard, and a fierce and loyal friend. He was a role model for me for so many years, and such a genuine supporter and nurturer through my adult years. He asked me to make this arrangement eleven years ago for the memorial celebration of our beloved teacher, Mr. Anthony Pasquarelli (“The Boss”), and though I’d written it with the idea it would be played by some of the luminaries of our teacher’s remarkable fifty-year teaching career, he insisted I play the solo line myself; I reluctantly accepted this honor and did my best. Lou was also the major driving force behind the idea of my writing a trumpet concerto back in 2005, also to honor our teacher. He was a generous and deeply principled man with a sharp wit. He will be missed by a great many of us.

(A side-note… It was a little difficult to find a picture of Lou, in part because he was always the man behind the scenes getting things done. I thought it fitting to include a picture in the video of him giving a toast…with a camera strapped around his neck! That was Lou.)
