Thank you for providing such great information not only on Art itself but also on the Business of Art, Copyright and the aspects that make up being an Artist and attempting to Sell your artwork and/or making a living at it. Enjoying all your videos. Thank You for taking the time to make them..you're a Great teacher!!

    I never got on well with Etsy. Fees are far too high (my products back then were just small stickers and cards...so the fee proportion was huge in comparison to the price) and in my few months I'd sold about 4 items.
    I started Storenvy last year and I'm getting close to 200 sales now, which is crazy! I love how there's no fee listing.
    But they've introduced sellers fees if you're listed in their own marketplace, so people are getting a bit antsy about it :T
    Never thought about selling work on eBay, I use it as a car boot sale for my older stuff hahaha

    From your experience... where would you suggest us to sell our art on. Society6, Redbubble, Etsy?
    We are cycling around the world and selling our art (painting, art prints, shirts, stickers) would be awesome to sustain us.
    Cheers

      +VAGABOOM Society 6 takes a huge chunk out of your money for POD. You may want to look at there payout sheets. After I looked at product payouts I went with Artful instead. They are like society 6 but will combine with store Envy as well as Etsy to do fulfillment and you keep more of the profits.

      I searched "Artful Selling" and Google suggested "Selling on Artful Home" and I came up with this result: www.artfulhome.com/servlet/Guild/MarketYourArtwork
      I searched "Envy Art" and came up with this result: www.storenvy.com/shop/category/art/
      I think I might of heard of Artful Home before, maybe from an advertisement, but I had never been to the site.

    Hi Lisa. I am new to you site. just signed up a couple days ago and I love it. watched your tutorials on pricing and on selling on e-bay. Found them very interesting and informative. I'm so glad you did this video because I do have an Etsy store as well as my main site. The Etsy fees are high and sales have been very small. If anything I'll probably pare the item variety down in the Etsy store to one media and change my main site to a lower fee one like Weebly. And also expand to a few other venues for print on demand. Fine Art America has nice product quality but like Etsy, an artist can get lost in the crowd. I have also gotten a few nice commissions via FB and still post, even with the constant changes. I will look into ebay now for sure :) Lisa, I love your TH-cam channel because it's so helpful. Thank you for all the great insight and advice! And thanks Rachel for your comment too - it's also helpful.

I've had a creative block transitioning from one project to festival prep. And as always I've started second guessing my prices. In binge watching your videos I'm feeling confident and reinspired. I hope you keep creating these, they are incredibly on point and so helpful to other artists. Much love!! I'm off to paint :)

    I had been selling on eBay for the past couple of years, was getting a very good following, but when they had their issue with privacy violations last year, everything went downhill and it seemed like an impossible mountain to climb to get buyers to come back to eBay. I tried again a few months ago and it was terrible. I might give it another spin in the new year and see if things get any better.

    I'm not keen on ebay at all, I do sell my wearable art designs on etsy. I'm trying to decide whether to sell my paintings and illustrations on etsy or society 6 or even redbubble when I'm at the stage to put my art up for sale but I am not sure if these others are a better venue. I think in comparison to etsy as an overall selling platform for art they are better as they focus on art but do people really access these platforms when looking for art. Sorry if this sounds like I'm not making that much sense but I guess it shows my confusion. I'd love to hear your opinion and thanks for posting this video.

    • @Lachri

      Nope, the second you used someone else's character...Disney in this case, you violated copyright. And Disney does not mess around with that stuff. They sue people left and right for copyright infringement.

    Hello, so for Ebay, how do you go about posting the image of your print on the listing and making sure no one copies your print and resell it?

    • @lawshorizon
      @lawshorizon 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      To cut in ... you can put a watermark across it (using programs like photo shop); however, a watermark can be photophopped out too. You can also make your picture small (about 400 pix wide or less) or diffuse the image using photoshop. The problem is that the image you're trying to sell is degraded but it's unlikely that anyone would try to make bogus prints from it. Another thing is that you can personally sign your prints by hand -- people aren't likely to try to forge it. And/or use a stamp on the back or supply a certificate of authenticity. You could also put your thumb print on the back (if it's paper). using an ink pad, and sign your name beside it (something artists should really do -- but they never seem to do -- imagine how many fakes could be so easily proven fakes.)

    Thank you for excellent info and fast delivery - Very valuable info. I gave up selling doll clothing on Etsy because of the competition from China - they sell cheaper than I can buy materials to make my handmade item. Still sell my paintings on eBay - You are correct about shipping - and I offer free shipping as I think people are reluctant to buy if they have to pay to ship.

    • @DavidSchneiderIP
      @DavidSchneiderIP 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would recommend running a comparison -1. offer free shipping and charge more 2. Charge less and buyer pays shipping. Compare the sales over a period of time. From what I've read it comes out about the same. I charge the buyer for shipping and can set my price lower. I find it is much easier that way but to each his own :)

  • @Sakuems

    I use Dawanda, a french etsy in a way. It has 5% fee on each sale but listing is free. I sell more on dawanda. On etsy, i was really annoyed but the fee and even more annoyed that you have to pay to renew the listing every 4 months.
    I noticed you have your own personnal shop on artistwebsites.com .. is it free to create a shop like that ? it doesn't look free.. is it expensive then ? i checked the website. 30$ a year doesn't seem too much. Is there any fee if you sell anything, do you have to renew your items ? do you sell a lot on there ? i don't know if it's a very popular place for people to buy prints but it looks like i should be on this as well. they said it's very popular and with millions of people searching on the website but there's also a lot of artists posting their work so i don't know if it's "that" easy to get noticed... do you think i should have my own store on this ?

    • @DavidSchneiderIP
      @DavidSchneiderIP 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      artistwebsites.com is just a tool to create your own website. It does not give you any customers, you will have to attract your own. You will not have any viewers at all for a long time. Use eBay or another selling site.

    I’ve been selling my art on eBay for about a year and a half. I’m at the point where I sell 4 or 5 paintings a month.
    You mentioned how much time it takes to do listings. Because I have an eBay store, I have templates. It takes 3 minutes to photograph, crop and edit photos of my paintings. It takes another 2 or three minutes to create a listing with a template. You could do the same thing without an eBay template by coping and pasting html from a template page you create with an html editor.
    It takes much more time to promote your listings through social media and your website than it does to create the listing, although eBay makes sharing through social media pretty easy in the eBay app.
    Views drive sales. Promotion through social media drives views.
    Sales drive more sales. eBay rewards sales with more visibility of your listings.

    Hi Lisa, I wanted to try ebay, but I got a question. How do you determine the starting price?
    do you usually put a reserve price? Is it better to have a lower starting price (0.99$) but a reserve price or no reserve price and a reasonable starting price? Am I clear ? not sure.... must take another coffe...

    • @DavidSchneiderIP

    I sell my work on both Etsy and EBay and have been averaging 1000 dollars in sales each month on each site. That's just on sales and then I get commissions off both sites too so I make a pretty decent income just off ebay and Etsy so I love those two sites. The fees and listing items are a pain but since I've been building my shop on both sites for many many years now I have found success but I can see if you only post a few things here and there you're not going to make any big sales. You really have to have a lot of inventory that you've built up over the years to make decent sales. Plus you have to sell things people want. Although the subjects you paint are very similar to what I paint so I think you would do really well on there if you invested the time or maybe paid an intern to build up your shop on Etsy and or eBay. I am curious where you make most of your sales or income! I really love your TH-cam channel and I just now have started making more videos so thank you for the inspiration!

      i've been drawing for 15 years and i open my shop 2 years ago. i have a lot of designs and customers are happy but i still don't have enough people to make a living out of this.
      i don't sell animals, maybe that's popular... i noticed u sold some cow prints, i never though anyone will buy a cow print haha :p

      Etsy is worse than ever. Too bad there is no other site in that niche that is competitive. I list on eBay. I also have my own site with my own store and good sales but that has taken 8 years to build good traffic. I would recommend eBay as #1 for all beginners. Selling on your own site should be after you have several years of experience if at all.

    Thanks. I may look into eBay again. It's been many years since I sold anything there so I know a lot has changed. I thought there was a listing fee even if you didn't sell anything. Maybe I'm confusing it with Etsy, which didn't work at all for me. I sold nothing and was out the listing fees. I think it helps if you have a large following and you can direct them to the site. Otherwise, like you say, your items get lost in the (massive!) crowd on Etsy.

    Wow, what was true when this video was made is even truer now. After years of Etsy, I pulled all my items (over 100) about 5 months ago due to exactly what Lachri is saying. I complained on various occasions about competitors who were selling machine-made items as handmade buy Etsy did absolutely nothing about it. Fortunately I also have a long-time online store but most do not have this option. Now, I am also going to start selling our originals on eBay (I have sold various things there for years).

    You can simply filter between "United States" & "Everywhere" on Etsy. Etsy is very useful when pairing it with other social media sources. If you get a following through instagram, facebook, G+ etc. then you'll get a following (returning customers) on Etsy. Etsy focuses strictly on handmade items, which in itself is an advantage over Ebay. I dunno, my girlfriend & I each have an Etsy business and it's what we do full time...

    Thank you for posting that video. I've always had more sales on ebay, though very small items, that really brings no profit, but has expanded my client base somewhat. You just have to put the time into it though. I've only been selling on etsy for a couple of years, and it's strange, I have ssssooooo many more looks, for example (I might have 10 looks at 1 item in a few hours on etsy, and on the other hand, the same item on ebay may not get 10 looks in 2 months! Yet, I will more than likely end up selling that item on ebay over etsy....strange.....because of all the fees, PayPal, listing fees, etc, I would actually make more profit if an item sells on etsy. With ebay by the time all is said and done, it's about 60/40 (me 60% of it and the other 40% goes for ebay fees, S/H, PayPal, listing fees, etc.) So anyway, thanks again for sharing. It lifted my heart to see another artist who has the same opinion. Thanks!

    • @DavidSchneiderIP

      Take into account the added costs and charge more on eBay. Otherwise, you're wasting your time :) At this point I do not offer free shipping on eBay, buyer pays shipping fees. That may change if eBay starts requiring free shipping; at that point, I will increase my prices accordingly. Like others here, I am sick of Etsy and hope for an alternative.

    Good discussion. I will say that I had a thing listed on Etsy and it got pulled for copyright but it was a word I used in the description that described a supply item that has a brand name. I used the generic item in the item but I described it as the brand name. Always imagined some bot or person zooming in on my little creation to see if it was their product or their competitors. That plastic loop closure stuff that has a "v" in its name. Ridonkulous. So...they do have some standards, I guess.

    I sell loads of stuff on Etsy. I sell vintage and handmade in two separate shops. My handmade shop does ok, but my vintage shop does really well.

    I tried ebay about a year ago, it was a big mistake. I put an Acrylic tiger painting up and it was open to bids. I didn't know anything about selling on there and thought that was the way to do it. It was on for a week and I got one bid 99p so I was stuck with having to give it away really. What are you supposed to do to get the prices that you want?

    • @Lachri
      @Lachri  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Diane Howe Art You always put the starting bid at the very minimum you're willing to take for the art, or put a reserve price on it. That way if someone isn't willing to pay what it's worth, then it doesn't sell :)

      Personally, I pulled all my sales off of Etsy due to their lack of interest in maintaining their integrity. I use to sell quite a bit there but I got sick of the fake stuff I was competing with.

    • @DavidSchneiderIP
      @DavidSchneiderIP 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Watermark all your photos. As far as something being copied physically, you are not goiong to be able to stop that. Move on to new ideas and stay one step ahead.

    selling my products overseas almost never happens these days for me. it costs about $250AUS just to send 1 didgeridoo that weighs only 2 or 3kgs from australia. i do sell didgeridoos to japan by the dozen but the middle man pays for the crate and shipping.

    The reason that Etsy isn't so worried about ppl selling stuff there that may violate copyright is because A PERSON HAS TO MAKE A LOT OF MONEY FROM ANY TYPE OF ARTWORK (say at least 1 million dollars) before anyone will even think about suing them.People on Etsy usually dont make THAT much money from the sale of their arts/crafts.

      Etsy claims to be for handmade and vintage items. When I reported many times items that were obviously not handmade or vintage, Etsy did nothing. Pulled all my items out.

    How do some people afford to sell 80cm x 80cm stretched canvas paintings for like $30 , free shipping? I can't even buy a canvas that large for $30 thats empty

    • @lawshorizon
      @lawshorizon 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, well, the video did not go too deeply into all the expenses involved -- the major ones being materials (paints, canvas), shipping costs (including packaging), and multiple fees (not to mention taxes). She said she sold some at about $50 -- she'd be lucky to have made 5 bucks profit. This is why I generally don't sell anything on eBay (or other sites) that was costly to make and ship. The people selling their painting for $30 with free shipping were obviously hoping the final auction bid would end up high -- too bad for them. On the hand, countries like China have very, very low shipping costs (but very long waiting times) and they mass produce their stuff (e.g. a thousand reproductions of the same painting) so they are able to sell their stuff much cheaper.

      Uphill or downhill, eBay is by far the most visited online store for the things most of us are selling.

  • @Fullrusher
    @Fullrusher 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Selling original things online is becoming depressing everyone want used crap , even the resellers make more money than those of us selling original ideas, or am i the only one noticing this trend ?

    • @DavidSchneiderIP
      @DavidSchneiderIP 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      True, in the past 20 years, original art has lost customers. Many galleries in our area have closed for good. However, there is still a market if you can reach millions of people, ie, eBay.
