@@CarterMoen , the mm is the gun diameter as in how large the hole is not the length of the barrel but yeah it is true, longer=faster, stronger

Dark and evil were they, something the Ainur did not comprehend and they feared it’s majesty, for its untold power seemed to overuse their understanding of the music and some of the Ainur gravitated towards Melkor, thinking him to be God. Melkor corrupted and destroyed the first two themes of Ainulindalë which is all of Eä, that is all that wholly is creation in its infinite vastness of incomprehensible nature)
@@FffXdhgfNeither the Valar nor Morgoth are involved in the affairs of Middle Earth at all past the third age, and even then they acted only through the Istari. And, while Olórin is probably rather powerful as a Maia, in his role as Gandalf he has many restrictions imposed upon the use of that power.
So no, at no point during which Gandalf was relevant would Middle Earth have been able to stand against a modern army.
(Also, why even bring up Morgoth? He's gone for a good long time and the prophecies on Dagor Dagorath have Turin stomping his ass basically as soon as he returns)
@@rdevan3245 yeah sure we can beat armies from elder scrolls doesn't mean that we can beat the individual characters like Miraak or Alduin can beat us. It doesn't matter how technological advancement we are.
And the same thing will be applied to the LOTR. As we can beat the armies but not the individual characters. Like Gandalf will be considered as a superhuman being to us. While it's true he cannot beat us, he can do some crazy stuff which can give us some PTSD. While true form Gandalf can arguably beat us ( because it is said that the Maiar who constituted the order of the Istari were mighty for even members of the "angelic people", being comparable to Sauron in his origins, although it is unclear how comparable this version of Sauron would be compared to his state during the First Age Of all the potential ringbearers, only Gandalf was considered to have an even chance of overthrowing Sauron as the Ring Lord if he claimed the One Ring, with Tolkien citing this to be due to their shared origins and nature)
@@FffXdhgf who brought up elder scrolls? The Elder Scrolls universe is legitimately overpowered, and their "gods" are still active. They'd actually be terrifying to fight.
LoTR is just not the same. Other than the Maiar and the Valar, nothing really has the scale of punching power required to win against a modern army. And the thing about the deities in that world is that in the age we're discussing they're barely active at all- once again, they only act through the Istari, and while Saruman's actions throughout the series show that they're nothing to scoff at, he's still ultimately brought low by the Ents.
Tolkien simply didn't write in a way that modern fantasy "vs battle" fans can really compare his characters to other things and say they'd come out on top. After the first age, there's no real argument that Middle Earth is a "low magic" setting to use a modern term- it's not going to do anything against the full might of any large modern nation.
The funny thing is that in the anime in this short, GATE, the self defense force that was sent to the other world was equipped with older military equipment, so the fantasy armies were decimated by what we consider old and otherwise somewhat obsolete equipment.
Mostly Mid and Late Coldwar tech. But yeah.
A thing that I really liked in “The Forgotten Ruin” series (that can be summarised as “U.S Army Rangers vs the forces of Mordor”) is that its very upfront about just how lethal modern weapons are, especially against people who have *no idea* how to defend themselves against them.
However, when you only have a limited amount of ammunition and your foes have tens of thousands of troops against you then things can (and will!) get ugly really quickly…
One of the reasons why I think Gate is so boring. Yes, I expected the curb stomp but I was hoping to see some hiccups.
Like magic or fantasy metals or dragons with alien biology that make them much less susceptible to modern weapons.
Or just MASSIVE hordes of zombies or goblins and orcs that soak up the damage before "the real troops" show up.
Something.
But Gate ends up just being a JSDF power fantasy. Which is fine. I'm sure most people here eat that up.
I just wanted more out of the premise than that. Something more than a wooden plank of a character being baddass commando getting the fantasy anime babe harem.
@@Mahbu Yeah I tried to watch Gate but, like you said, I feel like the protagonists just didn’t face enough of a challenge. Like power fantasies are fun and all but they get old quick.
I mean at least in “The Forgotten Ruin” the enemy poses a genuine threat to the Rangers and they usually have to resort to fighting smarter (not harder) to just *survive* the horrors that they face (and even then the price they end up having to pay is usually quite steep). Like for example, how *do* you defeat an seemingly endless horde of undead monsters that never slows down, never tires, doesn’t care how many of them you kill AND has an annoying tendency to just get back up again after you’ve killed them?
The only problem with Gate is the Gate, the anime stops after 2 "seasons" but the light novel and manga go further. At one point the Gate destabilizes and closes for quite a few years, Itami and others stay behind and have to learn how to fight with swords, archery, ride wyverns etc. because all the supplies they brought over would run out. Watch "G. I. Samurai" it's a 70's JSDF time travels to the warring states period of Japan and fights with tanks, and rifles vs samurai on horseback, they don't have a constant portal so eventually they run out of fuel, ammo, etc.
@@Dherkin_McGhurken Indeed. However, the manga and light novel have their own issues.
Namely the jingoism, far right militarism, and cultural posturing. While toned down in the anime, it's very prevalent in the source material. My god, the way they portray journalists and "liberal" politicians.
In fact, one of the reasons why it isn't as popular in the US as you'd expect is the perception that it has an anti-American sentiment.
Which it basically does.

Magic might be the only factor that could give the fantasy army a chance.
And even then we can just study it like any other force. We’ll hit them with a thaumauturgo-dynamic bomb a year into the problem
In the Gate series Magic takes time to learn, chant, and implement. Meanwhile african child soldiers with no education can use a rifle just as well as an average adult with no training. Add in actual trained soldiers and good luck chanting a protection spell when a sniper blows a hole in your chest a mile away and you still haven't heard the gunshot.
@@Dherkin_McGhurken I wouldn't say that a child soldier could use a rifle as well as a professional, but a bullet from each will kill just as well
indeed....
but it is scarcely portrayed with the special regionites' usage of them over there.
@@UCannotDefeatMyShmeat Problem is if we can even use it right as we could use it as well as the Earliest Steam Engine.
Compared to Ancient Wizards that know the Magic so well, they might even sense our incoming Magic bomb.
Then there is the factor of Demon magic and other corrupting magic that corrupts the users especially uf they study it

Dragon tamers after a M1 Abrams tank commander pulls up:
I love how the Japanese send 30 to 50 Year old equipment to fantasy land because that's exactly what should happen
Why waste the new stuff if the gate was to close
@@Groza_Dallocort They did use their Latest equipments in the Manga, and I can only theorize it as 'testing grounds' for how easily the armored vehicles, not just the latest Type-10 tanks but even just a Type-90 could hold off the Prince's 'guerilla' army.
You realize, a lot of countries use 30, 50, even 100 year old equipment in their armies right? A lot of stuff is of old design.
I mean it makes sense before guns the spear was in design with slight modifications since the beginning of time. So no wonder some guns are still in use. Also poorer countries tend to change out their shit far less.
Not to be political but Ukraine used a lot of old stuff and inflicted a lot of damage to Russians
Same can be said for Russians too since they used a lot of old stuff mixed with new ones
They did when they initially went through the gate. The reason being the older stuff they could leave behind if they had to evacuate, or afford to lose.

If I remember correctly (unless I’m confusing it with a fanfic), the Geneva Convention’s Rules of Warfare actually encouraged many combatants to surrender &/or defect.
@@UGNAvalon it doesn't encourage that but if they are either cut off or asked by the opponents to surrender then it is encourage to do so
@@enigmagrieshaber5555 No, I mean: The medieval soldiers were so impressed by the modern soldiers' mercy & restraint toward prisoners & civilians that they started surrendering/defecting en masse.
I'm pretty sure that the JSDF do follow the Geneva Convention, and they go out of their way to not bring harm to civilians (in the anime at least.)

"Skill diff."
I mean, if that was meant to be a serious question, I don't think Gate is the place to look for an answer. It seems kinda leaned in favor of the modern military, being the protagonists.
They have air support in the form of dragons (basically napalm spewing, ironscaled living planes with their own reflexes and sense of self preservation)? Obviously our tanks can snipe those out of the sky (ever seen a tank hit a helicopter or jet, for example). They've trained their entire lives in melee combat? Obviously we'd still kick their but in a fist fight. And that's not even touching on how the fantasy world could have modern military equivalents (like their own cluster bombs in the form of magic fireballs, or even magic barriers that could block a bomb); and that's not even getting into any reality warping high level magic has a tendency to do. But right, the most effective characters from the fantasy world just so happened to have teamed up with the protagonists, lucky them.
Im reminded of a quote, about why the 98 American Godzilla movie was a disappointment, "They have so little imagination, they could not even conceive of something their guns and bombs could not kill."
While you are completely right, I don't think it matters.
Melee wont decide the encounter.
Helicopters meant to hunt tanks have range.
Modern helicopter crews are aware of what tanks can do and will avoid getting shot 99/100.
And modern armies outrange the wizards , even if they are outgunned by them.
Humanity always dreamt of dragons, terrifying beasts that were capable of mass destruction and objects of epic tales that would always remain just fantasy....
Then we built fighters jets, our own metal-scaled flying monsters that can raze entire cities into ash and rumble
We created friggin nukes. For most medieval fantasy worlds it would be the equivalent of taking a chunk of the sun and just dropping it. And the craziest part they're not very hard to produce if needed.
Attack Helicopters = Flying Iron Pegasi.
Main Battle Tanks = Iron Elephants.
Multirole Jet Fighters = Flying Iron Swords

Even ignoring the massive technological disparity, modern militaries have much better logistics and support infrastructure, not to mention better training for its soldiers on average.
our supply lines would be much better then from them the only advantage i see gate has is magic and creatures since they won't beat many with sword's and bow's if they fight agenst a fricking tank or assault rifle but then we could just learn the weakness of the creatures and learn there magic, our logistic's would be also better if we add spy drones send in a warhog and they are mosly done

I think it depends on the magic system, how they militarily integrate it, and how OP their magic is in the medieval fantasy world.
But in general, the only fight they could probably excel at would be Guerilla warfare.
Hmm. Maybe urban and Guerilla warfare. With magic, the problem comes down to range really. In most fantasy, magic is fairly close combat. Artillery dosent need line of sight. And has a long range. So unless their magic has something similar, their still done for
Unless they got psychics using magic to tell when to use it. Mages would be the first target for any decent sniper. Good luck chanting with a hole in your lungs and you haven't even heard the gunshot.
if thing's get to hard for them to handle we just send missle or nuke if thing's get really out of control

@@outrider425 Stealth would be irrelevant given they would be up against a primative civilization. But if the JDF had been using MLRS and 777 Howitzers. Things would have been much worse for that fantasy army.
Nothing different would have happened, the Empire was already oveatched, you dont give police officers the most modern equipment on the regular because their equipment needs to defeat a civilian, not a rifleman.
For example lets say that in Gate we change the F4s with F35s, that does not add anything to the JSDF, they already pack enough ordenance and cant be engaged. The same sith artillery, the M109s and mortars are powerful enough to disolve any empire formation or position.
More advanced equipment only adds cost for a meager improvement.
@@nahuelleandroarroyo I am merely stating the carnage would be worse. Not the overall tactical situation.
