that joke is stupid. We germans have both a word for singing (singen) and sinking (sinken) very simular to english,, if we dont talk about the ending it is the same.

I'm brazilian, super late in my life I just fly out of Brazili with 30 years old (33 right now) with almost ZERO english or whatever, so I had to learn english (and italian) by myself and in a hurry.
What I can "see" that with some words I speak like a german, others words sounding almost like russian, or scottish, american (I can't just say "WALTER", it is WATER and that's it), I had some difficulties even with my own language so I try some tricks to accommodate myself better and keep the pace as natural as possible. Nowadays, sadly, I don't have much people to speak english with, no Wetherspoon, no small talk.
So I remember those 8, 9 months in South London and people getting almost crazy 'cause they can't figure out my accent (and as I take a certain amount of care with my fellow countrymen, I somehow avoided some situations). Speaking italian it's kinda the same thing, I can mimic some italian accents but some words, being a native portoghese speaker myself, sometimes it's difficult to hide. Now, in spanish, it's just difficult to try to speak properly.

There actually is a good rule of thumb for “th”! We actually have 2 different sounds represented by the “th” in English. If it is unvoiced, like in “bath”, use an s/f. If it is voiced, like in “bathe”, use a z/d.

Good explanation. I find that some Germans inexperienced in speaking English are uncertain about V and W and sometimes reverse them -- "votching tellywision". Final L is often very liquid - "comparablll". Words ending -ing sometimes come close to sounding like -ink. And they have trouble with the progressive tenses -- "I am living here now twelve years", or "tomorrow I go to Berlin for a few days". Sometimes they use "what" as the relative pronoun, "This is the book what I told you about". And the strict word order in German, especially adverbs, can be mistakenly carried over into English. NB none of this is to mock Germans, who make a better job of English than I make of their language.

I once told a German in the US, “Vielen dank.”
He was so hurt. He asked me how I knew he was German, was his accent so bad? The more I said his accent was almost perfect, the more hurt he became. So I told him a story about how nice a German neighbor lady was, and he thought I was making it up. She used to paint our house for free because she said she was bored. He looked thoroughly offended.
He said, “German people aren’t nice.”

Echt witzig als Deutsche! 😂😆 Wenn wir „Darth Vader“ mit amerikanischem Akzent aussprechen wollen - also so, wie es eigentlich richtig ist - dann ist es uns peinlich, weil es für deutsche Ohren nachgeäfft klingt.
Noch etwas, das wir anders machen ist das L. Wir sprechen es mit einem ä vorne äll
    Greetings from Dschörmenny! 😜

Ich bin Deutsch, aber so spreche ich nicht. Ist das nicht die alte Generation die so einen deutschen Akzent hat?! Das finden doch alle die ab 1980 geboren sind, schlimm so Englisch zu sprechen!
