Thelxie's Fantastic Adventures is the best event Genshin Impact has ever released; from its pacing to its storytelling to its symbolism, there's a lot to unpack here. So, let's look at how Genshin Impact uses Shakespeare and penguins to talk about important issues.

The entire quest was written in such a sensitive manner, and they did an amazing job portraying the struggles of mental illness.
Whether people perceive Loneliness Syndrome as depression, schizophrenia, or a combination of other mental illnesses, its broadness allowed it to resonate with a lot of players without disrupting the main story and message!

There’s so many orphans in Fontaine, all the same story that the parents die for reasons like they got caught in bad situations at work, being criminals, or they don’t care for them so they just leave them behind, etc. But I think this was the first that we meet a parents perspective of losing a child and it really broke my heart. 💔

Oh, trust me I am fully aware of such scenarios, but I find it kind of strange that out of all nations, it’s Fontaine that gets the focus on orphans when the nation had been relatively stable. Additionally, they probably had the least of unwanted children problem. Think of Inazuma that actually had a civil war going on and many other tragic events.

I think that loneliness syndrome might be more schizophrenia, because in the story, they were talking about a lot of dreams and imaginary world, which is signs of schizophrenia

    • @StrayMaverick
      @StrayMaverick  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +223

True! Absolutely could be the case. I took it as depression because of all of the symbolism of the depths, as well as how it eventually takes whoever has the syndrome if it's not dealt with. But I can absolutely see schizophrenia too!

    • @FaiGal
      @FaiGal 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +159

There’s a lot of interpretations. I’ve seen some players say it’s ADHD, depression, schizophrenia, etc. The whole “loneliness” seems to be like a spectrum. Its all valid no matter what mental illness we think it is, overall it’s best that we acknowledge all the ways someone can suffer and how we should help them as much as we can like in this quest.

    • @jofromthething
      @jofromthething 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +110

I feel like it’s not an analogue for a real world disease, I think it’s meant to be an imaginary disease called “loneliness syndrome” which doesn’t have a real world analogue. I feel like it’s intentionally broad so that it’s applicable to a wide range of issues a person with mental health issues could suffer, without trivializing any actual real world illness.

Personally, I like to think that it’s not based on a specific condition, but of the experience of delusions themselves. Anyone can have them, and they can be a symptom of any number of divergences and/or conditions. What matters is that they come to people when they are feeling alone and stuck, and they can be both an escape from and a continuation of that nightmare. I think all interpretations are valid though, cause it’s meant to be a representation of people’s experiences, not something to be gatekept. I’m glad that all the conversations I’ve seen around this have been thoughtful and respectful so far!

Then she called Thelxie "my son" and it set off alarm bells in my head.
I started the third part of the story expecting the twist of her being the one with the delusions. But i expected the boy to be alive and dealing with his mothers Depression and delusions.
So learning that he was dead hit me still.

I just love how, even though Freminet is a 4 star character, that only have little screen play in the story quest, is actually one of the most well written character in the game in relatable perspective, from the more surface characteristics of being a shy socialphobie, to the more details of self-abasement. A very small detail, in one of his voice line he directly stated that he hates his biological father that he never care about him anywhy, it might sound absolutely normal for the major public, but that's the point, since sometimes, writters when wanting to made their characters nice and perfect, will avoid any negative thoughts given by characters, or giving characters any greyish, non-black-or-white moral (which is more obvious in Lyney, Lynette, and Wrio's background story, of their past adoptive parents, really love how they write Fontanie characters :) ). They really made his character, real.
With my own perspective as a socialphobie, having mental illness in the past, overcoming my loneliness with fantasy, which I also believe that a big chunk of ACGN lovers had also experience, he is just so relatable.

this whole event shocked me. at first i was shocked by the existence of something like loneliness syndrome in genshin; it felt a bit too real for this game where the problems facing characters are a bit more fantastical (no human is going to suffer for 500 years, though we can experience those feelings to a lesser extent). then the twist hit and i was devastated. genshin has really stepped up their writing recently, and i'm looking forward to seeing the game get better and better because of it!
also, great video :) i am a shakespeare nerd but missed those shells. it's super interesting. i noticed another shakespeare reference in genshin recently (florent quotes hamlet in navia's story quest); i wonder how many there are in the game in total!

      >no human is going to suffer for 500 years, though we can experience those feelings to a lesser extent
That's why Freminet's quest (and Navia's storyline in AQ) hit me way more than Furina's. Archon Quest was sad and beatifully directed, but the whole thing is surface-level relatable. But I can't agree that Genshin stories have always been detached from real-life topics e.g. I still think Venti's quest is the best one, and even though it has a fantastic element to it, the basis for the story is a real deal.

what I also find interesting but not talked about is
Thelxie said a bunch of dots and dashes, repeating the same thing each time
it was letters in morse code
and even if you know how to decode morse by yourself, you might think nothing about it. that's because it was in Caesar Cypher with a shift of 1
and if you went through these steps, you got "jetaime maman" or something like that. basically "I love you mom" in correct French spelling

This event stories is very beautiful, I am sorry I skipped through it. Though I want to point out that you showing game play of the Fortress of Meropide arc for "filler" and "lackluster" I don't really agree with. It is true that you are stuck in an excruciating routine, everyday after the end of your work wondering for how much longer you'll have to keep repeating the same cycle, everything is the same, the days blend into eachother, you are spiraling and don't know for how much longer you can put up with it. !And that is why it is part of the Archon quest! That is a glimpse into how Furina had been living for centuries, you get to experience a fraction of her pain. I think it sets up the scene and conveys the feelings really well. We were meant to feel stuck in that prison, Furina's existente was such imprisonment.

I have conflicted thoughts about the Meropide Act, but I do think it thematically works really well with the Chapter as a whole. The Fontaine chapter is the most thematically cohesive one in the game so far. Currently working on a whole Chapter review, but that'll take awhile, but I used the clip here because it really worked for the whole, sitting around doing nothing thing. @luizairinam2136 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

@@iriselle1918 I actually don't feel the stories were the same. Also I wasn't as invested in the Sumeru one and maybe you were more invested in that one, reason why you think it is better. The execution was different, there we re-lived the actual same day -exact same day- and it was like a feeling of deja-vu. The time would not progress, it was a time-loop. Here in Meropide everything was more mundane, it was about the daily actions you have to repeat like Furina's never-ending routine. - the feelings brought up are different. If you say they are similar enough for you to feel the same, sure, but let's remember that for Sumeru that was kinda the entirety of the archon quest, that is what I think about when I think of it, Samsara, while in Fontaine it was a smaller integrated part of a much more impactful and deep story, it just made so much sense how it tied in such anticipative motives

I'm 43 years old. I've always liked to play videogames, for both gameplay and stories, RPGs being my favorite. Being a Genshin Day One player, I've been hooked by those things many times over. This quest, however, hit me so hard I actually cried in the end. Depression (and its correlated states - borderline, schizophrenia, psychotic crises, etc.) is something that distorts your world, and you can no longer see things as the rest of the world does. I've been like this for a long time, and I could relate to both Freminet, as in I prefer to play/read/escape rather than hurt myself over the harsh reality of the world, and the kid who passed, who was seduced by a sense of opression and searched for a way out, and found himself very close to the bottom of it all. The ending of the quest made my bawl like a baby, ngl. I saw myself in that kid, but also pictured what my mother would feel if I surrendered myself into the depths of my own struggles, even though I can't seem to swim high enough to be truly free. Depression is a real disease (as in brain chemical imbalance) and it must be taken seriously by those around us. Thank you for making this video, as I have also noticed the words from 'The Tempest', but failed to make the real connection to the quest, as you brilliantly did here. Here's to many more quality emotional-driven quests like this one on our way througn Teyvat.

this event hits really close to home for me. when i was the deepest in my depression i was slowly going into a psychosis like state where my fantasies and imaginary worlds and characters were the only thing keeping me going.
i was planning to move abroad with barely any preparation, no life experience after locking myself in my room for years and a very shady work deal. if i hadn’t been convinced by a friend to seek a psychiatrist and psychologist i have no idea what would have happened to me. i didn’t even realise how deep in it i was until my therapist told me about it in detail after i got out of it. i spent 3 months in a therapy facility and the psychiatrists there weren’t sure if i could even get out of my delusions at first to be able to receive treatment. it’s horrifying to thing about it looking back. i’m so grateful that after so many years of taking this burden alone i was able to get help and now live a somewhat normal life. it’s not all better, but i’m slowly getting there. i cant begin to describe how much this story means to me. i really appreciate that genshin was willing to take the risk and write something like this. it’s truly amazing.
one friend i made in the facility (who i introduced to genshin) said that they loved this story so much as well and i’m just so grateful. freminet was one of their favourites even before this story. i love how well it turned out.

What's most interesting to me is that the story has such deep meaning to it that a lot of people completely miss the foreshadowing in it for the story of genshin itself. Much like bottle world and how it foreshadowed all the events of Fontaine, this quest foreshadows the foreseeable future of genshin. Pimon quite literally says that she is going to be a fairy that empowers the hero. You can see the mother in the background is wearing a fattui mask ( it's in the storybook where the monsters are running away with the crown look at her face). Watch it again and listen to the story that they're telling.

I think what it comes down to is Gacha(live services)vs Story. When you look at Caribert and This Event there extremely short
Only giving you exactly whats needed to piece things together.
The actual tone doesnt matter its somber and it contrast with Genshins surface level optimism
But it also embraces that optimism and never feels as tragic which is why i will never agree on Dunyazrd needing to die
I see Freminet as a character who does what rarely happens in media find balance in the depression.
Depression can be awful even bring turmoil and harm but it can keep you safe it creates a barrier and can give you appreciation for the things and people around you.
Freminet always feels like hes sad but hes rarely down he finds peace in the melancholy and finds inspiration in his family.
I like that if you go to the house she point out the doctor is ambiguous about there patient. I like that the language the penguin speaks needs to be translated twice to see what there saying.
Its the very hard Gamplay/Story Balance.
Genshin has a lot of these and i dont just mean World Quest I think people have just become numb to Genshins Writing like the fans who still say the Traveler is Piamons mouthpiece
I also think scarcity of events like these makes us appreciate it more for all the Hype Honkai Impact 3rd for how it "actually" kills characters you never get a true connection because its so frequent
And in Himeko's case they spend so much time retroactively giving depth to her character that i wouldnt be shocked that most new players dont feel anything and are more shocked then sad
TLDR This was good theres more to come but i also hope its not to frequent this was special and im glad Freminet was the character they used

The tragedy here was used to really recontextualize loss by using fiction itself, which is a really fantastic angle to use. That's why I don't thing loss has to be inherently negative and why I think Dunyazard's death could've been a positive, even in a different light.
And yeah, I agree. If we got an event like this every other patch, I'd be more than happen. Something thematic that uses a named character to hit home a really symbolically heavy story. Would be great to constantly get that. But, we gotta have the Lantern Rite festival again soon instead. Uuuggghhhhhhh. Lmao jk

      @MrQuackcorn 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

I'm confused here, Dunyarzad wasn't killed off, yes, she "died" but was saved at the last minute thanks to Nahida finding her consciousness at the last moment, what's more is that she was cured of her Eleazar.
The emotional pull/impact in her specific case was that you spend a (agonizingly) long time trying to save her in the archon quest, only to "lose" her but by the 'stroke of midnight' so to speak, she is saved, and upon the completion of the quest-line even has a happy ending. The pull/impact being that you DID save someone, I mean that much is obvious, you saved all of Sumeru, but she provides an anchor, a symbol of you saving everyone, because you know exactly how her life was at stake and how close it was to being lost.
The effects of the Akademiya were horrible but ultimately reversed thanks to your efforts, but Dunyarzad shows us that it was so close to *not* being reversible, because you can't bring a life back even if the crisis is solved.
I guess what I'm trying to say is if you wanted to use an example of bad/lazy tragedy writing, I'd use something like the Osial or Beisht crisis in Liyue, I refuse to believe that people didn't die during those events, but the story never touches on them at all, it's just like "yay you beat the big bad, happy ending!" and while cool, it leaves me with the same distaste I have for most big superhero films, like yeah cool, the bad guy got got, but there's still X amount of people dead, families and lives ruined, without even talking about the cost of rebuilding... Which, to Genshin's credit, they've started to actually show now, Poisson shows this a bit.

But the last Lantern Rite had very similar themes tough.@@StrayMaverick
It was also about loss and grief and dealing with it, but using music instead of fiction and centering aound Madame Ping instead of an event NPC. All of the event was thematically centered around her and Guizhong. The climactic moment of the event cutscene was Madame Ping picking up the Cleansing Bell again and playing that one song she never played since Guizhong's death to signify she's ready to take a step forward, the very song that was also the entire reason this rendition of the Lantern Rite was focused on music as it was the reason Dvorak came to Liyue. I would say it had a pretty strong throughline (from what I remember, lol)
Maybe not as poignant as this event (since they needed to cram in more characters), but overall I remember it to have been very powerful still.

so here’s a little bit of irl MHY trivia that adds another touch to this particular event story: 2 years ago one of the co-founders behind MHY signed a joint research venture lab with his professor’s university hospital for collaboration towards studies for medical care development connected with neuroscience and technology. One of the research topic that they were working on at the time had a title of something like: “Clinical Research on Neuroregulation Treatment of Treatment-Resistant Depression using Brain-Computer Interfaces”. These devs are no strangers to telling stories in their games expressing human struggles with tragedy and fighting for all that is beautiful in this world to create miracles saving lives. Even something like a comforting experience with a fantasy game can help people gather courage to heal and face life forward both in small yet significant ways when done with a sense of purpose and resolve to rise above the sorrows that come with life.
I’m glad that this event story was written with that level of empathy and care I appreciate seeing from story writers for games like this. Thank you for your beautiful recap and this gem of a literary analysis video!

Genshin main quests are good, but far from the best, but the little details on the NPCs not involved in the main quest can be considered some of the best side content storytelling AND straight up the best storytelling gaming has to offer.
Have to disagree a bit about durnyarzard, though, although not has impactful as the world quests, I still think her character has a great amount of depth paired with the main theme of the story

Ah yes !! This event was amazing, especially as a big fan of Freminet it was so cool to more insight into his character ! I love how you explained the events and meaning of the story, especially linking the Loneliness syndrome to depression. Personally, the only thing that I thought might’ve been interesting, if it had been in the event, was going into how Freminet feels seeing a mother and son (essentially? Kind of?) reunite, since he lost his mother and based on his story and voice lines still thinks about her. Then again, his thoughts about that wouldn’t be easy to convey and wouldn’t fit super well with the themes of the event, but it was something I was thinking about when I saw the cutscene of Zuria and her son. Would’ve been interesting imo.

As a curious fact, Thelxie's main theme (y'know, the lullaby Zuria sings) seems pretty similar to the Dragonspine's OST "Fragile Fantasy", like if both themes were complementary.
I don't know if that has some kind of symbolism or if it's only a coincidence, but I noticed that similarity

Freminet really struck me. Like, something about his dialogue and character was just so compelling. It was really what got me back into genshin after a year-long break. It isn't often that four stars will get such dedicated events, but im so glad they made this one. You put alllll of my emotions about this event into words so clearly, I love it!! I feel like as time has gone on genshin’s writing has gotten better and better. The recent story events have been absolutely amazing. Though of course there have been good events before this (Parade of Providence, Shadows Amidst Snowstorms, Hidden Dreams in The Depths, etc.) the recent ones have really hit hard. Whether they be funny, entertaining, or emotional all of them have been amazing in my books. But this event is certainly in my top five favorite events so far (being with the other ones previously mentioned). And I’ve been playing since 2.3 so I’ve been through a lot of events.

As a new player, I wish that these events could be permanent quests. I am currently doing the Dainsleif quest after the Liyue archon quest and I want to follow the order of regions the traveler goes to over the course of the journey.
So, in order to play these amazing quests, I would need to break immersion and I don't want that.
Also just in general, whatever is said in a limited time event cannot be taken into canon and referenced in future quests, as players who didn't get to play the events wouldn't know what is going on. And I think that's a shame.
So yeah, I definitely agree with you on that :')

Honestly this quest kinda just made me roll my eyes...
Rather than the writing for the quest itself being bad, it's more that recently they've been trying to make every single quest an emotional tearjerker and as a result it becomes painfully predictable. It's the Inazuma Swordfish guy plot put on repeat and there's only so many times I can get invested in a character who obviously only exists to have a bad time.

When I first started this quest, I wasn’t expecting much to it and mostly didn’t for free freminet. I did not realize how hard it was gonna hit, as someone going through a really hard time and often using my own fictional stories and characters as an escape, it felt really relatable to see and I am not ashamed to admit it made made me cry and still does. Absolutely beautiful quest, and really well written. I wish it wasn’t just an event quest since it was absolutely amazing in my opinion

very good video! when i first played this quest i interpreted it as a more hallucination/disassociative based illness like schizophrenia, but depression also fits well!
it's a really good written quest overall, i think anyone who's used media as a way of escapism/coping can relate to it
for me the fact that anyone can have a different interpretation of what it is about a big part about what makes it special. as another person said it, loneliness syndrome is more a set of symptoms that can be related to different mental illness conditions than This One Specific Condition

More often than not, 4 star characters get much better writing than 5 stars. This quest was so amazing to go through, mainly because it raised awareness of how depression can be such a destructive thing, but at the same time, it can also be healed with a lending hand. I had not known much of Freminet prior to the event, because I'm still finishing the Sumeru quest line, but after I met him, I found a profound respect for him, and a profound appreciation for the writers at Hoyoverse.

I've never cried this much because of Genshin before. Something about the way this event was written made me have such a visceral reaction, I had to take an hour just to find my footing again after it ended.
The event art was so beautiful as well, I felt it really captured the magic that comes with fairytales. I also didn't skip any dialogue for the first time in ages, which is definitely an accomplishment for Genshin. It was all relevant to the story and just the right length.
When I get sad again about missing the Albedo event, I can console myself with having had the luck to experience Thelxie's Adventures firsthand.

  • @utopes
    @utopes 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Ope… well rip me then LOL. I’ve done every single main-event quest since 1.2 and every single time I get utterly blown away at how incredible every new story gets 🥹 From the highs of lantern rite, to the higher highs of windblume and the darshan competition and the tcg tourney and limited bottleland, every new quest has been a step up and I was utterly enthralled
Juxtaposing that uhhh, the thelxie quest sadly bored me to tears 🥲 an exaggeration maybe, but twas the very first main-quest I just decided to stop halfway, figuring the rewards were just not worth it. It lowkey might’ve separated me from Genshin for good because I didn’t finish the 4.3 quest either (I really wanted to though, just ran out of time after being away from 4.2).
I just was really uninterested in anything freminet has to say, he and mika are the only genshin characters I actively dislike 🫠🫠🫠💔 there might’ve been some light at the end of the tunnel but this whole vid is news to me. I foundthis event, so, touching and emotional, I almost cried, like the other few times a emotional cutscene is played (praticly all of them). And I'm not the type of person to cry over movies and stuff. There's something in this game that I cant explain. It's colors, the stories, the characters? Maybe everything! I read A LOT and I read A LOT of good stories. So typically I'm never surprised when a story unfolds in most games. It's more about how it happens rather than never seeing plot twists. I also have higher standards (not because I'm a snob, I just have a lot to compare stories against) then most people.
So imagine my Suprise when Genshin duped me the way it did.
My first thought that something was wrong (but I actually didn't think anything of it nor did I think deeper about it) was in I believe the second part where you meet the mother for the first time? Where she ends that part by talking directly to the penguin. I recall feeling odd about how she addressed it.
It wasn't until we went to her house and learned the truth that I realized that I had erred greatly in not pondering upon that moment of uneasiness.
A review for my favorite author once said "Melina Marchetta proves that there are no original stories. Only original ways of telling them."
Genshin is like that. Nothing in 3.0 or 4.0 was "shocking" but all of it was incredibly well written DESPITE the limitations of their motions, animations, and time limit for development, and of course, having to work on mobile.
While I will always be critical of some aspects of their stories like with how they portray POC (though, I do appreciate their support for Xinyan story wise) and other things I won't deny how impressive it is what they do with a lot of other things, again, mostly because mobile and being a gacha really limits how much dev time they can have.
So I find myself agreeing with you, this story was suprising and actually got me. Because of how Genshin sotrybeats worked previously, I really never thought they would trick me like that and that my previous small thoughts of uneasiness about the stories not adding up and how the mother talked to the penguin were ignored because I made an assumption.

Genshin story is really something special to me. Even after deleting the game for 75 days I kept having a thought what kind of stories have I missed. No other game feels the same as Genshin. Everyone in ff14 community loves to brag about how good their story is, I've done the story but if it takes forever just to get to a good part (even in endwalker expansion) then what's the point.
But yeah, I'm really glad I came back when this event was live so I could experience it myself. Idk why but when freminet started saying those last words of encouragement at the end (I'm pretty sure same words came out earlier in the story too so they said almost same thing twice) it really felt like Genshin was breaking the 4th wall and freminet was talking to me. There's not much to look forward to, but I guess we could all try.

Cuz like, that’s me with these kinds of stories. As a storyteller at heart and someone who has struggled with mental health and the death of children close to me, it IS a positive (sometimes) if they kill off the child. Sure, it can be done in distasteful ways, but when it’s done well it really speaks to me, and it can contribute a lot to a story.

its sorta funny.... the 3 best cryo characters coming out 1 area after the other..... Layla, then Fremminet, then CHarlotte... and they are all basically opposites of each other
Layla is always hard working but tired, stressed and never fully there (she is likely the most relatable for collage students lol)
Fremminet is a loner, bad with people but has a good heart (relatable af to introverts)
CHarlotte is hyper af and focused like a laser on w/e she does (I guess relatable to the type of extroverts who will adopt an introvert!)
before these 3 the best Cryo characters (personality wise, and in my opinion) are Rosaria, and Chongyun 2 characters who are just "ok" then Hoyo basically decided "We are in the 4rth area, we should go as hard as Pokemon goes with Ice type pokemon designs for these 3!" Im not saying Wriothesly is bad (hes actually a decent character) but he is nowhere near as good as these 3 4-stars

But not a single quest was boring to me
Maybe it’s because I actually took the time to read all the ones without voice actors or because Fontaine is my favourite but Fontaine has just been so beautiful and the way it shows mental illness through fantasy is so interesting
Like with Thelxie but also Furina. Also it touches on racism with the Melusines and it also talks about how people who commit crimes can be rehabilitated and become better with the fortress of meropide. Genshin is just getting better. TLDR: Fontaine is beautifully done and so far the best nation IMO
