It all sounds cool. But I hope the ECO won't be another Euro currency. The Euro is a failed experiment as far I'm concerned. You have a country like Greece that is a drag on the system, requiring France, Germany, etc to bail it out. A big player like Germany cannot set its own monetary policies. It cannot print money as a way to deal with economic swings. The UK was smart not to have adopted the Euro.
It can remain a force if African enterprises, entrepreneurs, businesses, companies and corporations grow; if the ECO produces growth, etc., the economies will keep it afloat. And ECOWAS nations avoid IMF saboteurs.
It can work as long as the stronger economies are willing to supplement the weaker ones. If you look at the US dollar each state is really like it’s own small country that shares a currency. When economies are bad in some states the government will subsidize them to an extent with usually cash or trade value.

Another example is what happened with the Naira. Which of the member countries would have been able to bail out Nigeria? These experiments are OK in rich counties. But African countries are not powerful enough to be bailing one another out. Besides, is there a real advantage of a common currency? How much inter-trading is going on between the countries? Not much. There is a reason why the UK refused to join the Euro. It is because it strips the country of a lot of power to manage its own monetary affairs.

I'm quite skeptical about entering a free trade agreement without a healthy or strong manufacturing sector. Most of these African countries are looking for access into the Nigerian market. We must encourage our local manufacturers. If they now have to compete with other African countries, this might discourage local manufacturing. Also, I hope our markets will not be flooded with sub-standard products. We MUST raise the bar high for goods that come into the country. Also, I'm concerned about losing our sovereignty or national identity to some African Union bureaucrat. Who make decisions that affect indigenous african countries. The biggest challenge to intra-Africa trade (Part from Corruption) will be lack of infrastructure. Rail lines and roads between key hubs etc... This will mean that in terms of Logistics the cost may stay higher than if we trade with other continents. The idea is great, but the enabling ground structure does not exist yet.

My fear as well. It will at least take 10 years to implement the decisions necessary to real unity. The challenges are : disparate national debt, foreign loans, ongoing economic accords with China, the US, and Europe amongst other things.
Sounds good. However, implementation is the problem in Africa. I have heard of ECOWAS since I was a child but till today, no infrastructure to connect the region and foster integration. You'll hardly find a good road linking all the countries in the region. No trains! Also, how do you have a regional currency when France controls the economy and the currency of Francophone countries most of which are in West Africa? Lastly, nothing will be achieved with corrupt dictators in place and we have a few of them in West Africa. Talk is cheap!!

You have a country like Greece that is a drag on the system, requiring France, Germany, etc to bail it out. A big player like Germany cannot set its own monetary policies. I'm quite skeptical about entering a free trade agreement without a healthy or strong manufacturing sector. Most of these African countries are looking for access into the Nigerian market. We must encourage our local manufacturers. If they now have to compete with other African countries, this might discourage local manufacturing. Also, I hope our markets will not be flooded with sub-standard products. We MUST raise the bar high for goods that come into the country.
Also, I'm concerned about losing our sovereignty or national identity to some African Union bureaucrat. Who make decisions that affect indigenous african countries. We MUST tread carefully and make sure that our local manufacturers are protected.

This is a bad idea. I have a feeling that this is not going to be implemented well.
My fear as well. It will at least take 10 years to implement the decisions necessary to real unity. The challenges are : disparate national debt, foreign loans, ongoing economic accords with China, the US, and Europe amongst other things.

Sounds good. However, implementation is the problem in Africa. I have heard of ECOWAS since I was a child but till today, no infrastructure to connect the region and foster integration. You'll hardly find a good road linking all the countries in the region. No trains! Also, how do you have a regional currency when France controls the economy and the currency of Francophone countries most of which are in West Africa? Lastly, nothing will be achieved with corrupt dictators in place and we have a few of them in West Africa. Talk is cheap!!
