    About Ven. Ajahn Amaro:
    Born in England in 1956, Ven. Amaro Bhikkhu received a BSc. in Psychology and Physiology from the University of London. Spiritual searching led him to Thailand, where he went to Wat Pah Nanachat, a Forest Tradition monastery established for Western disciples of Thai meditation master Ajahn Chah, who ordained him as a bhikkhu in 1979. Soon afterwards he returned to England and joined Ajahn Sumedho at the newly established Chithurst Monastery. He resided for many years at Amaravati Buddhist Monastery, making trips to California every year during the 1990s.
    In June 1996 he established Abhayagiri Monastery in Redwood Valley, California, where he was co-Abbot with Ajahn Pasanno until 2010. He then returned to Amaravati to become Abbot of this large monastic community.
    Ajahn Amaro has written a number of books, including an account of an 830-mile trek from Chithurst to Harnham Vihara called 'Tudong: The Long Road North,' republished in the expanded book 'Silent Rain.' His other publications include 'Small Boat, Great Mountain' (2003), 'Rain on the Nile' (2009) and 'The Island: An Anthology of the Buddha's Teachings on Nibbana' (2009) co-written with Ajahn Pasanno, a guide to meditation called 'Finding the Missing Peace' and other works dealing with various aspects of Buddhism.
    In December 2015, along with Ajahn Pasanno, Ajahn Amaro was honoured by the King Rama IX of Thailand with the ecclesiastical title ‘Chao Khun.’ Together with this honour he was given the name ‘Videsabuddhiguna.’
    - - ❖ - -
    "Ajahn Chah was very strict and orthodox as a monk -- he followed a very tight schedule, he was very strict with the Vinaya discipline. They used to say in Ubon that three months in Nong Pah Pong Temple is like ten years in any other monastery. Luang Por Chah was proud of the fact that the food at Nong Pah Pong was the worst food in the world -- in those days that was absolutely true, I have personal experience over there.
    It was tough living there, and he was very disciplined but yet when you are with him you realize that this is the happiest man in the world. This is a man who has no limits, no boundaries but yet he has all these rules and he has no time to himself. He has people visiting all day, every day. How is that this person with so many responsibilities, so many rules, such a tight schedule and discipline, how come he is totally free?
    What arose in my heart as a novice was that whatever I had to do to get to become like that, I'll do it."

    There’s a fantastic book called ‘food fir the heart’ by Ajahn Chah. Possibly the best book I’ve ever read on Buddhism.
    Cut into beautifully short snippets/teachings.

      Maybe you know, are they meat eaters?
      I read that the Dalai Lama is a meat eater.
      Which doesn't really make sense, as Buddhism ia about avoiding suffering.

      @NC-it2ws 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@adorable3817 Buddhism is about abstinence from killing and not meat eating. There is a huge difference between the two. Buddhism is very intricate and deep, not gross and easily observable.

      @@NC-it2ws eating meat = killing.
      The book that I read about Budhism spoke about avoiding sufferage, on every page.
      Meat in Restaurants and in Discount grocery chains comes from factory farms where there is nothing but suffering.
      That's totally avoidable, because humans do not need meat to survive. There's nothing in meat that we can't get from fruits, veggies, nuts, grains and seeds.
      So today, we eat meat only for taste.
      I do agree that it IS however an emergency food. When you're stranded on a mountain top, or during an ice age.

      Do you think that eating an already dead animal amounts to causing suffering?

    • @adorable3817
      @adorable3817 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NC-it2ws earing meat is paying someone else to do the killing for you. Which means you're just as involved.
      That's like someone saying, since they are Christian they are not allowed to steal, and asking their friend to do it for them.
      So, if I pay someone (to rape, torture or kill) that means I'm in the clear, since I'm not actually doing it myself.
      Hmmmm

    Perhaps the whole message of Ajahn Chah is there is no Ajahn Chah/no person just mind and body or Nama Rupa.

      You are a fool. Of course there is an ajahn cha there is a self and there is a soul.
      How can u be so stupid. If you're not real then don't eat or drink and see how far you last. Let yourself go then but you won't you just pretend you're smart.

    Thankyou, 🙏🤭l never met Ajahn chan in person, but many years ago l witnessed his jovial. Teasing way of teaching, one evening at Ratanagiri branch monestry When they were celebrating his birthday , during the puja hour. Like venerable Amaro l was late for the puja. It was a hour journey on my small 50 cc motor bike, l worked at a local a school, then had a family duties to cook the and visit my friends. So l was 10 minutes late, for puja., which was being held within a inner room.(the cottage was being modernised, so l sat in the unheated room, doing silent meditation, in my cycle gear being aware of my body temperature slowly dropping and wondering if l should return home, hyperthermia set in. ) l practised yoga breathing to raise my body temperature. Then l kept getting a happy birthday song kept surfacing in my mind. For part of the time l puzzled why am l getting happy birthday, am l going mad. Then l saw a gray type of outline of a figure sitting oppposite me, so as you can imagine by this time l wondered where my awareness was, as there was something. Familiar about the laughing facial features. The more l puzzled the more the gray facial expression changed from straight face then the tune happy birthday, then the smiling shaking body of the gray mist type body kept changing in front of me. Eventually the door of the inner room opened, a monk greeted me, “Oh hello, didn’t know you were outside, it is ok if you come in late, Thankyou for visiting us, we were celebrating Ajahn Chas birthday. (Not understanding pali, l didn’t know they were. Chanting happy birthday to our teacher. After a hot drink. I returned home along the winding country roads musing at my personal experience ( one of many at the small monestry.) years later l read an account of his funeral ceremony where the wind blew the smoke and all the monks left the area, as the smoke was inhibiting their respiration. No surprise then, l had a similar experience whilst visiting a Krishna Hindu temple, when the candles caugh alight, everyone sat wondering what to do, myself l got up and followed those ahead of me vacating the room. At that moment l was reminded of Our teachers book, aboiut. The chicken poo, being used as. Currency, a reminder, was l also carrying chicken excreater attitude in my Krishna temple visit. So my lovely teacher still continues to tease me years later by your discourse on iPad. Hope my past memories are able to help or reassure anyone who is unable to visit temples, or monasteries, due to age or distances, or finance, that the teacher is always present, not always wearing his human mask. Mettle and 😘🙏to everyone, may you all be free of suffering and be joyful. 😘😘😘😘👋

    Extraordinary and so terible his last 10 years at a relatively young age a stroke bed bound etc until freedom from body really is the last to go ,this period perhaps needs exploring what was he like yet he couldnt peak. Sad we need a Healthy body and we must tend to and pray for healing or the ability to function without disability and pain 😢 ❔✝️🌈🤯Ego less ness IS the ideal goal for most if they stay this and understand it ,why the existential level unchecked creates hell .
