Same. I understand the part that there wasn't much change in her palace compared to the vanilla version. but it should be at least a bit higher than being in last place of how much futaba`s story line carries this palace run.

Akechi during the Third Semester made me from not giving a shit about him to a Top 3 character
Hes now my favourite video game character simply because hes a psychotic shithead.
Which only made me feel worse about not getting his confident past 5 before end of semester 2 😣
He became my favorite character
Those sprites! I fell in love with the smug and default ones
I was a fan of Akechi in the base game and he really got a chance to shine in the third semester. I was really worried they were going to backtrack on the fact that he did straight-up murder the parents of two of the main cast but no. They did not do that. All the other phantom thieves besides Sumire fucking hate him, and he's still violent and psychotic. But we get to see how much of the facade was real, and we get to see what he does now that the lifelong goal that twisted him so thoroughly is over.
My god, Maruki's mentality really made my emotions conflict with eachother. Throughout the first few hours got me thinking whether I should actually steal his heart or not. He really made me choose the 'happy world' ending, ideal and the real's end arrangement had me crying continuously for like 20 minutes. I used to think of Maruki as like, a 3rd best character before the palace. But now he's my favourite. The Persona series is amazing.

same, it was conflicting for me to choose! i seriously thought, if it would be great for them to live a happy life finally having the things that were once taken away from them. when i checked on each friend, the pros kept outweighing the cons for me.
i also wondered if perhaps the MC/me would be considered selfish for confronting the friends about the positive change in their life, since i'm the only one left out of having these dreams/wishes come true. Futaba getting a second chance to live her life with her mom, Ann and Shiho no longer getting separated, etc.
Between the Maruki and the Phantom Thieves, they were doing almost the same thing. Tampering with the heart vs tampering with cognition. Why is one okay, but not the other? Those thoughts arised when I thought they're not that different from each other. The difference being that Maruki was large scale (the public) and Phantom Thieves was individuals.
@@orpheusbreeze I mean, I'd say that the fake reality is definitely the worse ending. There is also a massive difference between PT and what maruki does, the phatom thieves basically remove the negative desires and keep the rest of the person, maruki changes the entire being so they become "happy", completely throwing out any progress said person made on anything and rendering it all meaningless, overwriting it with what they apparently like. Then again there is also the fact that you would be living under someone's control. For me the harsh reality in which you can overcome your struggles and thus become a better person in the end than you would have been without the struggle is better than one in which everyone's character is erased and replaced with a happy alternative, if your personality gets changed, your past and your current situation gets changed, are you really the same person? If you accept Marukis reality after you secure the route Sumire will get rewritten, the end result is Sumire's personality getting literally erased, and all her progress of coping and working towards a new goal with enthusiasm is gone. It erases all progress and meaningfulness in what has already happened, leaving you in a reality no one worked to achieve.
But yes definitely not an obvious choice, it is up to interpretation however I think there is still a bad choice here as everyone ends up living under someone's control in an ideal dream world without meaning
ALL of you would choose marukis reality. Period. You guys do that all the time in real life. Denying reality, creating save space so everyone can be happy and no one ever is offended. And then even declare that new fake reality to alternative "science". Be it the Gender-Nonsense, climatic change, denying racist facts (they maybe racist, but theyre facts) , "noooo women are equal as men in any regard" and so on. You would even completly deny that those are "ideal" and not "real" standarts. So no.... ALL of you SJW WOULD have choose marukis reality.... cuz thats what you do in real life all the time since years.
And honestly, i wouldve too. Marukis reality is the "good" ending imo. And ruining it for everyone just because 7 A**holes (the PTs) cant stand it is egoistic and makes them literally the bad guys.

Hot take: I "didn't' actually like the new Madarame boss fight as much as the last one. The OG boss staying for the whole fight not only felt more coherent, it felt much more serious. It was super jarring for me to go from "I essentially killed your mom Yusuke and my true form is that of some vain, fractured creature who has lost all sense of genuine self and love of true art" to "MADARAMA POWER RANGERS GOOO! ICE! LIGHTNING! FIRE! WIND! WITH OUR MADARAMES COMBINEDDD!!"

Yes, yes, yes... I agree 700% with this comment. Madarames boss fight in p5 was my absolute favorite for this reason. I have not played p5r but I feel like the "Pop-Art" Madarame makes sense too. A man who is praised for his art skill, on the inside has no sense art himself e.g. the primary color pop art that is horrible on the eyes.

Okay okay for real though, I do disagree with the placing of this place(Narrative wise), but I do agree that Futaba’s place didn’t have that much changes or content besides the will seeds. The boss(Wakaba)was more annoying this time in my play though, but that doesn’t compare to Okumura’s still. Okumura’s place was definitely way better than it was in the original since it feels more challenging and a bit better going into it through the story. Although I do feel like it was TOO challenging with the boss fight(at least for me, then again I didn’t have enough items to use to get rid of the robots so it could just be me) because it took me like 1-2 weeks to finally beat it. Still this video is great and I’m super glad Royal fix and improve on some minor issues with the original game while adding new content that fix well(to me) in the story.
I also like how Maruki's Palace mainly has enemies that haven't appeared in Persona games for a while such as Byakhee and Fafnir (who were last seen in Persona 2) or had their Persona debut here such as Macabre.

His best argument for it is that it barely changed from the base game. No new puzzles and if you take out the grapple points and will seeds it's the same place. Every other palace including Okumara's which I loathed had some changes that were noticeable. Futabas did not

Reminds me of my friend who hates Akechi and was like "There's no way they could redeem his character." And he was right, and they did the exact opposite with Akechi and it makes him 10x better.
1. Maruki (Obviously, they had 3 years to make this alone)
2. Shido (I loved everything about this palace and I love Akechi and Shido's fight)
3. Sae (Short-lived, but damn if this wasn't enjoyable in every way imaginable...button though)
4. Kamoshida (Before Maruki, the best antagonist palace owner)
5. Futaba (I wasn't too fond of the pyramid, and Anubis can kiss my ass, but it was alright; plot was great)
6. Yusuke (I love Yusuke so I might be biased; this entire palace is great)
7. Mementos Depths (Mementos, but plot; I still love the Fake Igor twist from vanilla)
8. Mementos (Changes to Royal are very welcomed, but I didn't mind vanilla Mementos)
9. Kaneshiro (I just can't stand the gameplay of this palace, even though Makoto's arc was fantastic)
10. Okumura (gameplay didn't resonate with me, plot was shaky at best, Haru was rushed)
I think my favorite part of Saes palace is the arena fight near the end of the infiltration.

One thing that elevates a lot of palaces for me, especially Maruki’s, is the voice cast, Billy Kametz is perfect for Maruki and of course no one can bring Akechi to life like Robbie Daymond.
The new VA work is so godlike, and I already adored all the performances in Vanilla P5

if you notice, the shadow portrait of each palace ruler contains the real world treasure in it. Kamoshida's is the medal hes holding in his right hand. Madarame is the Sayuri behind him to the right. Kaneshiro is the money stack in his left hand. Futaba is Futaba herself. Okurmura is in the top left, its the spaceship thing. Sae doesnt have it in hers bc we never saw her real world treasure. Shido is probably on his suit somewhere, but im not sure. Mementos doesnt have a treasure, and Mementos Depths never shows the real world treasure. Dont know about Maruki, as i have not played third semester yet. Im gonna guess its another case like Shido based on the portrait.
Maruki is nothing. His treasure is a torch but his third eye portrait doesn’t show it.

His treasure was a newspaper clipping about the death of his girlfriends parents since that event traumatized her to the point of being unable to even talk, that event is what sent Maruki on his quest to change people’s cognitions and create a world of eternal happiness
i think it’s stated that sae’s treasure is her “sense of justice” when she talks to the protag during her arc, so there’s really no need for her to have extra props other than herself in the 3rd eye. the only two bosses (excluding mementos due to it being cognitive everyone) that do not show their irl treasures in their 3rd eye sprite are shido (his legislative pin) and maruki (the news clip)
@@neptunetheeight3517 You can vaguely see a shape as it is floating on the pedestal and Makoto speculates that Sae's treasure is her father's police notebook. It is shown in Persona 5 The Animation as well.

You know, I disagree about Futaba's palace since it's my 3rd favorite but I can't be mad at you because you put Maruki's at first place just like it supposed to be (and as expected)
You basically said everything about the Laboratory but you didn't talk about the fact that the Palace itself was somewhat "teased" in October during Sumire's awakening out of nowhere and it's one of reason why I love it so much , as someone who already played Vanilla it got me so hyped to play Royal even further to get into this Palace as quick as possible to discover it's misteries and it's one of the reason I love it so much now.
Gentle madman also became my favorite palace theme as well as Maruki becoming one of my favorite character, I hope they bring him back one day.

God, I love and hate the final palace.
You get to feel all those conflicting things. No, you don't want to do the things 3rd semester wants you to.
You feel like the villain taking the happiness from your friends - even though you know that they can't continue just floating around in this state.
It hurts how Sumi struggles so hard to maintain her cool and not be a burden while every room is even more beautifully designed than the next. This palace is wrong in every way, the music should be calming but it is just sad.
As is everything Maruki does. You see where he's coming from. The road to hell is truly paved with good intentions.
Welp, and then there's the goddamn night before the deadline.

May as well post my list here then. Spoilers, unless you've watched the whole video.
10 | Futaba
Basically the same reason as the video, plus actually getting to the pyramid is fairly tedious in my opinion.
09 | Okumura
Again, basically the same reason as the video.
08 | Mementos
I love all the new additions in Royal, but at the end of the day it's still Mementos and it's sort of a chore to go through at times, especially when hunting for stamps. Jose is great though.
07 | Kamoshida
There is nothing wrong with this palace at all other than the fact that it takes a little bit to get going, in my opinion.
06 | Kaneshiro
I'm not sure why I wasn't originally a fan of this palace in the original, but this palace is phenomenal and has one of the best palace themes.
05 | Mementos Depths
This is criminally underrated and whilst the palace layout and gameplay isn't anything special, it more than makes up for it with the plot and the general theme of the palace.
04 | Madarame
Bit of a weird choice. Maybe it's because I do art/graphic design but this palace left a really big lasting impression on me. Plus this easily has one of, if not the best Persona awakening and some of my personal favourite puzzles.
03 | Sae
Obvious pick is obvious, easily one of the best palaces.
02 | Shido
THAT FINAL BOSS FIGHT EASILY OUTWEIGHS ANY FEW NEGATIVES THIS PALACE HAS HOLY FUCK
01 | Maruki
God, this palace is basically perfect. I found the maze slightly frustrating when going for the Will Seed but other than that, I really have no complaints. Best part was honestly Akechi's interactions with everyone, especially when he's the navigator.

Me personally:
10: Madarame
- Personally after the absolute ride the first palace is, it just didn't keep me engaged in the same way. It also felt like it took forever to finish because of how many times it throws you out. The music was also underwhelming compared to the other themes but that's just me.
9: Okumura
- The boss fight is fine once you figure out the pattern (2 turns to kill them all), but it felt they took something that was already annoying and just made it worse. Also everything you mentioned about the plot and Haru's botched introduction.
8: Depths
- I guess I always found the vanilla ending kinda cheesy since you go from fighting Armstrong to God in about 10 hours with very little buildup outside of Igor being kinda sus. Getting your team outta jail also took too long lol.
7: Mementos
- Ryuji when he hits rank 7: "MOVE BITCH, GET OUT THE WAY". I definitely had a lot more laughs in Royal running shadows over GTA style to xp and money grind when I needed to.
6: Futaba
- The music alone would prevent me from putting it last I'm sorry. I also know people like Futaba (not the tragic backstory but extremely shy) so that whole P4 experience of seeing them try to break out of their shell was right at home. The palace and story arc didn't go beyond like the top 4, but still enjoyable.
5: Kaneshiro
- Bro robbing a bank with Price blasting in the background, and all the security cameras etc was such a fun ride in itself. It definitely got a little tiring towards those last few vaults I will admit, especially if you did it in one go like I did.
4: Sae
- I have to agree I was disappointed with how Sumi was handled (I was expecting her to save you from the police first time playing lol). Other than that another palace I struggled to find a spot for. Solid across the board as your vid already covered.
3: Shido
- Ark is so underrated I completely agree. Also the fight with pancakes takes a whole new meaning with the new confidant route. It feels as tough and as grand as a "final" palace should be.
2: Maruki
- "The road to hell was paved with good intentions". You really do feel for the guy, and that nuance is what makes going through the palace so engaging. At first you see how happy everyone is, but over time you realize how dull a world without any challenges would be. Also "I Believe" going up the staircase, nothing else needs to be said.
1: Kamoshida
- For me, there is no villian more real than someone like Kamoshida. Not to mention how absolutely brutal this palace on hard as a new player to the series. When I was hiding from a red enemy, you could feel the fucking tension. Managing SP with so few resources was a challenge I hadn't faced in a game in years. By the time you get to Kamoshida, you know everything you need about buffs and smart turn usage to easily beat him. Maruki was a close second for sure, for me it just came down to how EVERYTHING about the first chapter was done with that tight story writing and attention to detail.

I can't exactly rank the palaces since I've only played P5, but I don't exactly like Kamoshida's palace due to the fact that some of the shadows randomly appear in front of you and give you a heart attack.

something that slayed me about the number 1 slot is how the security level graphic directly faces and beckons to you, as opposed to the others that are facing slightly away, barely paying attention to you as the player/protag. it felt very representative, and while menacing, offering a very strange almost comforting feeling. a loss in that palace isn't a loss in the same sense as the other palaces. a loss here only means submission and no harm. just another way atlus put a divisor between royals last palace and the others.

Kamoshida, and Kaneshiro's can be swapped, Kamoshida has the better story, better theme, but the palace is just ok. Kaneshiro introduces one of my favorite thieves, and has Price which is one of my favorite songs, and is more visually appealing.

God, Gentle Madman is just SO GOOD. Especially the subtle horns that get added in as the song progresses. It somehow PERFECTLY captures that feeling of sorrow that Maruki is trying to prevent just slipping through.

I remember when me and my sister were playing royal for the first time together, my sister was considering maruki’s deal while I was firm about standing up against him. In the end, we did the true ending for the sake of getting a true ending, but it’s interesting how one sees things can affect your opinion. My sister saw maruki as selfless and even kind while I saw him as no better than the god of control.while neither of our perspectives were entirely true, it’s just such an interesting conversation to have that really gets you to think. At least we both agreed that although his intentions may have been good, he was going about it the wrong way (also that he sucked as a therapist and gave terrible advice)

I had money cheesed in mementos to make op personas and got stalled out my first attempt at okimura too, don't feel bad.
I was about the right level, but out of nowhere every robot could one shot me. So I switched to merciless and he was destroyed.

i personally think maruki's story ark made me the most sad i have ever felt in a video game as the kasumi revel and maruki's 2nd awaking genuinely got to me on a very emotional level was definitely my highlight of the game.

I honestly had to stop playing for a few hours cause I was struggling to come to terms with the fact that I didnt hate him. I actually sympathize with him. Every other palace creator has qualities in them that make you despise them. Kamoshida with abuse, madarame letting Yusukes mother die for money, kaneshiro ruining people's lives again for his greed and money and shido being just a grade a douchecanoe. Maruki was the curveball I was not prepared for at all

oh and also I love all the palaces except for Okumura's, which I only like now. Yeah, the bossfight is incredible, yeah, they fixed the combat and exploration there, but it doesn't come close to the others (maybe Futaba's Palace), but here's the counterpoint: HOLY CRAP TURN OFF SWEATSHOP REMOVE IT FROM THE GAME ACTUALLY JUST DELETE THE SONG FROM EXISTENCE ACTUALLY YEAH THAT SOUND SO MUCH BETTER THAN SWEATSHOP

1: Labyrinth of Sorrow; it truly give off the feeling of sorrow while still keeping you invested.
2: Ship of Pride; Beautiful music and boss fight

4: Memento Depths; it felt like I was truly doing what the thieves originally set out to do, helping the people no matter what they think of us
5: Mementos; the new mechanics helped keep it interesting, but not much
6: Bank of Gluttony; it was alright, but could have been better
7: Pyramid of Wrath; like the bank, but felt a bit more off
8: Spaceport of Greed; even after what Royal changed, it still sucked in my opinion
9: Castle of Lust; it always felt like a slog to get through, especially on repeat play throughs
10: Museum of Vanity; this one always felt extremely slow, no matter the play through

One thing I like about Persona 5's palaces is that most of them are places that thieves would steal things from; a castle, a museum, a bank, an ancient tomb, and a casino.

Tbh I wasn't happy when you put Futaba's palace on last ahead of Okumura (i don't care what you say, the boss fight is a nightmare the very first time you play it if you go in blind. It's significantly better when you actually understand it, but by then you probably have died countless times to one of the easiest bosses in Vanilla), but then I thought about it. I recently finished a NG+ game so I had a chance to replay the game and palaces again and I was struck by how little I remember of the Royal Futaba palace. Like, if you ask me about Futaba's palace I remember more about vanilla's palace than Royal's. That's just how indistinct they are

Of all the palaces in the game, the cruiser of pride is my favorite. I love the ship aesthetics, the palace theme, shido's boss, rivers in the desert. And the mouse. I love corrupt villains and symbolism and shido and the ship brings it in spades for me. And the mice. Haru is so cute in mice form. Her little hat.

I think Shido's palace is bottom 3 but everything else in the arc (except Shido and Akechi massive exposition and Ryuji getting his ass kicked by the girls) is amazing
The Floor Puzzles in Mementos Depths actually has a symbolism. The Butterflies that are etched on them are Blue / Gold, a testament of the old God Philemon and the demiurge pretending to be him Yaldabaoth.
I audibly gasped when you said the Depths of Mementos was only number 5. I love the Depths so much, the music is incredible, the puzzles are engaging and the end boss was phenomenal and the music FOR the boss was so triumphant. Not to mention the aesthetics were absolutely on point. Of course, everyone has their own opinions and I respect that but stilllllll

I love how two people can play the same game and have two completely different experiences. I was excited to watch this list as my best friend and I just beat P5R and have already had our discussion on it. I would have put Space dungeon at the bottom. Idk what was going on with me but I was having such a hard time keeping the big green units from running away and it restarting again :/ I don't remember having any issue in the old game. I also hated the addition of the Fly shield guy in bank xD. I think my fav would be Art Gallery or Casino but the new one is a close second.

In my opinion, Maruki's palace is pretty aggravating when you reach the twilight corridor. Like I almost freaking rage quitted after I reached the second part of the puzzle. Other than the twilight corridor, his palace is truly magnificent. There's so much character development with KaSumi and Akechi.

Gonna be honest with you, Dr. Maruki’s palace is S tier. The diaries and the video tapes are the best additions to the palace finding out the past of Maruki. The utopia lab looks beautiful. Glad this is number 1. The true best part is the “True” Ending where Maruki picks up Joker in a taxi and the gang deceives the black sedans that are tracking Joker. (Also because Futaba said she’ll text Joker back which warms my heart since I romanced her) The boss fight wasn’t too hard too and the “Checkmate scene” was on par with Satanael’s Shell. Basically what I said is 3rd semester is amazing and Maruki’s story arc is goat. “Bad” Happy ending isn’t that bad too(I didn’t get that end I had to google it since I managed to choose the right choices with Maruki). A little weird imo seeing 2 dead people alive
I’m not sure if this was in Vanilla P5 or not, but I like how, on the little icon of the ruler in the Palace Meter, the treasure is there most of the time. Okumera has a spaceship in the background, Madarame is in front of Sayuri, and Kaneshiro is holding money to name a few.
Maruki's palace is also great because when you first find it halfway into the game it is designed to make you think it is Yoshizawa's Palace. It is a great dual subversion.
-It has cameras looking at everyone everywhere, in and outside the palace (Yoshizawa is a rising star gymnast and always has people watching her forcing her to meet expectations. Thus causing stress)
-The location for the Palace is at the Gym. (Where this entire time you are learning about Yoshizawa's struggles and performance issues at meets)
-Right before entering you see Yoshizawa get the app on her phone as she is talking to herself, most likely activating keywords by accident. (this is after F's palace so it was established that it's possible to enter your own)
-You see her dead sister in her competition outfit trying to cheer her up. (Something really only Yoshizawa would know unless the palace owner has seen her competitions or what we end up finding out about Maruki's palace and how it works)
I unfortunately knew Maruki had a palace before playing Royal, considering I took a break between the original version and royal. So I didn't notice this. That's really cool. Royal really was a huge improvement to the original in it's narrative.
I simply won't believe Okumura was the worst simply because the internet wants me to. I loved it, 10/10

I like the final palace as his goal is the same as yours but while you and your team rather face the truth and learn the hard way, Maruki wants people to run away from their problems and always be happy in that way. Throw away your wask also defines Maruki and what he wants humanity to look like.

Okumura boss fight is probably the hardest on first play, but that just makes it so much more enjoyable. In the original P5 I basically breeze through on first try without fail, so me losing a few times is no big deal.
