This was my Turtles growing up and I’m so glad this was my version. I remember rewatching the series over and over on the 4KidsTV website. The atmosphere of the climatic fight sequences was intense and along with Jackie Chan Adventures and Power Rangers was probably the start of my respect and appreciation of eastern culture and martial arts in particular. That was a golden age of Saturday morning cartoons. Really difficult to pick which was best but TMNT definitely deserves more recognition. It’s simply amazing.
Thanks to a friend of mine who's still a huge fan of this iteration of TMNT, in addition to seeing all of J's Reviews' retrospective, I now have a newfound appreciation for this take on the Turtles. I didn't see this or the 80s series a lot growing up, just caught it when I could as a kid.
I watched the J Reviews alongside the 5 seasons in 2023 and turned it into a companion type viewing. Finish one season and then view his review on the completed one!
I couldn't watch this series on a TV channel because I’m from Poland and live in a house, where it can be tricky to get cable TV. So, I could only watch public TV, and in Poland at the time, there weren't dedicated public children’s channels. The most I would get were some children's programs or cartoons at certain hours. For some reason, my parents didn’t want satellite TV, so we only had public channels and a DVD player. One day, while I was in Media Markt (a store that sells technology like phones, fridges, and DVDs), I saw three DVDs with the turtles on the cover. At the time, I didn’t even know who the turtles were, but I liked the art, so I asked my dad if we could get them. He probably didn’t know how dark that show could be and agreed to buy them. The DVDs I got were from the 2003 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles show, and I loved them. Of course, I couldn’t get the complete set because there were only three different ones in the shop. This show is solely responsible for me knowing who the turtles are, and it’s one of my favorite shows ever, despite some of its silliness. Some years later, when I finally got unlimited internet access, I watched the whole show and loved it even more. Those DVDs are still some of my favorites that I own. Sorry for the long essay! XD
The 2003 Turtle series was like a animated adaptation of the original movies since it went with the version of Splinter being a pet and not mutating from Hamato Yoshi
2003 turtles was my jam!! Spent an entire two weeks during summer binge watching all the episodes some of the arcs in this show were legit some of the best writing…..and each turtle has their own strengths and flaws to a point of where we can all relate to it
I love this series as a kid and I know I have my biases but honestly these are my favourite version of turtles! i love there designs and I love how stayed close to the source material while still making them unique with a touch of the 90s with colours and the slight discolouration to make it easy to tell the bros apart. I love how it was a great blend of dark yet funny and had ALOT of life lessons that anyone can learn from. Also I can understand why Fast Forward got some hate but in all honestly... I loved it. I love how it was more laid back and chill and it was a nice change of pace, especially with how DARK and super serious after the last 5 seasons was. It was nice to watch the guys in a more chiller adventures, and to see how things changed in that span! i really like how Bishop and Stockman both got their redemption arcs and a good ending to their sad stories.
I like how the Turtles have remained relevant over the decades. Something about this franchise just somehow manages to stay with the pop culture media. The 2003 series has a soft spot in my heart as it was the first show of the Turtles I watched. I cannot wait for the Last Ronin movie we're eventually going to get.
The amazing fact that fans EXCLUSIVELY use this adaptation for their works is something for the love of this franchise. Like if you remember and read web-comic Ninja-Turtle Gaiden.
This is one of my favorite comic cartoons ever made. This show was NOT a reboot/remake of the the 1987 series like so many people think. It was just Peter Laird's way of making an adaptation that did his comics justice. I'm not sure it's true but I heard that Fast Forward was originally going to be as dark as the first five seasons. I also put this show with Batman TAS and Spectacular Spider-Man.
I grew up in the 80s so I watched multiple versions of the Turtles and I have to say is the 2003 version is my favorite. Not only is it a great introduction to the entire cast but the stories told we’re memorable. The other versions of the Turtles were good in their own way but this was the best in my opinion.

Spoilers for 2003's Shredder (and I'm copy and pasting this from one of my Reddit posts): People complain about Ch'rell being an Utrom, but I rather like it. It goes to show how much effort he has gone into blending into human society, learning their behavior and fighting styles to the point he is better than most martial artists on Earth. I think the Utrom Shredder only really works in the context of 2003, however. The reveal of him being an alien was built up over an entire season and would not hold the same weight if they did an alien Shredder again, unless it had the same level of attention and detail given to it like Ch'rell had gotten. It's why the twist with the Green Goblin's true identity from the Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon worked so well. While multiple characters have taken the mantle of the Shredder and the Green Goblin over the years, their original identities are the most popular and well-known versions of them. It's why most adaptations only ever show Oroku Saki and Norman Osborn as the Shredder and the Green Goblin. In most versions, it is simply one character, not a legacy or a title that can be passed down or stolen. Because of this, you always know who's under the mask, except for 2003 TMNT and Spectacular Spider-Man. Those series played with fans' expectations of who the Shredder and Goblin are supposed to be, so the reveal of them not being who we thought they were allows for a greater twist. Making Shredder an Utrom or Ch'rell again would not have the same gravitas as when we first saw it.
@@Ib10. Thank you. Honestly, I'd love to do a video essay like your own someday. I'm just not sure my voice is really cut out for TH-cam. I'm more of a video editor than a video essay kind of person.
My only problem with Utrom Shredder was that they brought him back after Season 2. Season 2 ended with him at the epicenter of a super explosion. The only way it would've made sense to bring him back is if he escaped it in some way. But nope, he just survived with "injuries." Yeah, no. After that, they wanted him being locked up in Season 3 to be "final," but... it makes more sense to escape from prison than to tank a blast. Shredder basically had Joker immunity at that point, and you couldn't believably get rid of him
The shredder twist is great if youre familiar with the comics because while its NOT in the books it is definitely something the books would do because the creators were goofy like that.
This will always be my favorite adaptation of TMNT, hard to believe this show is 20+ years old. I hope more people realize the brilliance of it and just how underrated and great the show is.

14:27 I always knew that 2K3 Shredder had a voice that was iconic as it was menacing! And while I'm still indecisive on which one I like most this or the 2K12 series this show rekindled my interest and fandom for the TMNT since it aired.
Whenever I think of the turtles, this is what my mind defaults to. This show was just too good. The way they did the Shredder was just amazing. Man was intimidating and scary. Best version of him for me by far.
I was never really a big fan of TMNT when I was younger, and we only had 3 episodes of the 2003 series. But somehow only having 3 episodes made the theme song really nostalgic to me, but that’s mainly because we rewatched our cartoons all the time. I now own the TMNT 2003 the ultimate collection. and man… it definitely stands out compared to the other TMNT cartoons. I like how the themes are darker, I like the character designs and the turtles long head band tie-offs or whatever you call them. And I LOVE the all white eyes the turtles have, it definitely gives them sick mutant look / super hero look. 2003 is definitely my favorite TMNT cartoon. I really hope that nickelodeon makes another TMNT cartoon that is actually dark and bad ass like 03. and PLEASE bring the all white eyes back I beg of it!
Personally, white eyes is not the best idea. Eyes can say a lot about the character and outline his emotions in certain situations and I think 2012 guys were memorable because of their distinct eye color. Still think green eyes suit Raph perfectly and is just an esthetic bliss.
Tmnt 2003 before fast forward and back to the sewers is absolutely amazing. 🍻 Also tmnt and daredevil crossover would be amazing, they could have the hand and the foot team up 😂 Also agent bishop was my favorite character, I had no idea he was made for this incarnation of tmnt specifically, and gotta say shredders origin is dope af... All three of them (although he also had 3 mutants early in the series but nothing came of them)
2003 is the best Adopted version of The Turtles 😌. It’s a beautiful love letter to the classic inspired comics on even pays respects to the original cartoon. Just Incredible.
One of the reasons Donny doesn't get as much development in this show is because he's already the most well adjusted of the brothers. The other three are in various states of finding themselves and working on their issues. Donny already knows exactly who is he is, and he's totally chill with it. Doesn't mean he doesn't get any growth at all, he certainly has his moments, but he's the most grounded of the turtles and he frequently keeps the others grounded as well. This is why the family fell to pieces without him in "Same as it never was." I have various opinions about which TMNT show is the best, but I do have various favorite elements of each, and 2003 Donny is hands down my favorite version of him from any show. In all the others shows he's an absent minded professor, or a total geek, or an arrogant hipster, or, in the most recent series, a straight up otaku. 2003 Donny is just a chill, quiet dude, who enjoys his hobbies, loves his family, is insanely smart, and has a great work/life balance. I also want to give a shoutout to the side-characters in this series, which I think are also the best of any TMNT series. So many memorable and recurring characters, and something doesn't even have to be going wrong for them to visit. In the Christmas episode where Mikey is trying to save Christmas for some orphans, we see back at the lair that Silver Sentry and the turtles homeless friends, including the professor, have all been invited to Christmas dinner. It's moments like this that created such a sense of continuity in the 2003 series. The homeless professor wasn't a one time character, he's one of the turtles friends and so they have him over for dinner sometimes.
Ive been such a nerd in my life 😂this show has always been my #1 TMNT show!! Im an 0'3 baby so i watched it the same way you have, i appreciate you reminding me why i loved the stories in the 1st place
This was my definitive version of turtles Don't be wrong I love the '80s show I love the '90 movies but the 2003 is a perfect blend of everything and nothing has been like that since because what Nickelodeon's been doing with the turtles being more hit or misses honestly and most of it's not all that great. So it is good to see the '03 turtles get some love
I definitely ignite the fire right now and for the record I'm 2003 series fan who grew up on them, but I feel it's kinda good its fans were treated like shit for a while. Yeah, it's awful when a massive audience ignores or keeps on bashing fans favorite media(ask Rise of TMNT fans about that), but with the way 2003 fanboys act like the elite and their version is the only valid while they kept shitting on 2012 show just for existence, they kinda deserved their 4kids adaptation to be forgotten. Like, Turtles were and will always be different, if anything 2003 series is just as different from Mirage comics as 87 show. I don't understand this mindset and I especially don't tolerate anybody calling somebody "a fake fan" just because they're not that much interested in Mirage comics. It's good to have 2003 boys get attention again, but the fanbase left quite a bitter taste to the point of not wanting to hear any word about 2003 show. It's not as annoying as 90's TMNT movie or Mirage comics fantards, but still it's kinda sad that part of the fandom tend to be so toxic.
There are toxic people in every fandom and yeah, dumb tribal flame wars over different versions of the same franchises is extremely common, look no further than the live action Spider-Man discourse...ugh. But, for the most part, I think TMNT fans are one of the nicer fandoms when it comes to this since, the clear majority of us all just love to see the Turtles no matter what form or inspiration they take! This review was just me gushing over my favorite version of them that I love especially from the perspective of an existing comic book fan. Toxicity is everywhere. Don't let the stupidity of a couple bad toppings spoil the whole pizza for you...that's a decent pun, right?
@Ib10. "look no further than the live action Spider-Man discourse..." Yeah, Sam Raimi Spider-Man fanboys are whole another kind of pain in the ass even though these movies are far from perfect. I'm actually agree, despite all the drama TMNT fanbase is mostly surprisingly chill and kind community, most folks just doing their thing from collecting Neca figures to making fan art. It just upsets me when fans have their favorite version they don't bother to look into anything else which leads to them whining about not having something then already happened in the movie or a comic years ago. Just look at Archie TMNT comics, up until recent years they seem to be overlooked by everybody despite giving a lot of cool new stuff, most notably Mighty Mutanimals which are relevant nowadays. And I'm getting more upset seeing those wishing for franchise to die. I mean, sure you may end up not liking Mutant Mayhem and that's fine, but it's not that what direction the franchise is going to be or what it will end with. The most important thing is TMNT is still popular today and I'm glad that it still brings new fans. Fans can whine all they want about Peter Laird selling rights to Nickelodeon, but without them the franchise would've been dead by now since Laird already couldn't physically and financially keep this boat floating by the end of 2000's. P.S yeah, that's a good pun. Or just make sure Leo doesn't slice the pizza to drop it on your head
I was in 3rd grade when the original 1987 cartoon was adapted. 7 year old me enjoyed it until the 1990 live action movie and I realized that the movie was more like the comic book. The 2003 series is the best version of the turtles ever.
did not know there was a box set with the series all on it might need to see about getting that honestly this was probably my favorite show as a kid in the early to mid 2000s it would be great to rewatch it
I actually got into the 2003 TMNT version late but without a doubt this was the best version of the turtles & if the get the X-Men 97 treatment I definitely wouldn't be mad at it
I loved this show. I wasn't able to catch every episode when it aired but, I did enjoy it's depth. What Shredder did to Baxter was horrifying. I'm gonna have to go back and binge.
It’s ironic that 4kids, that created many dubs people liked to hate Would create such a serious and violent version of TMNT but The voice cast was excellent and it soon became my favorite While 2012 was at least entertaining, and I haven’t really read the comics, the 2003 feel like the most faithful TMNT through animation to date But that’s just my own opinion
While I never see the 2003 version, I'm interested to watch it. I hope to do so once I'm free. I only watch Rise, which is my favourite and the 2012, which I grew up with but it's memorable nonetheless.
My brother wasborn in the 80s, so the 80s TMNT was the version he grew up with. I was born in the 90s, so the 03’ TMNT and the first live-action movie are what I grew up with. That’s the definitive look of the Turtles that I have in my head. And when the 2011 IDW comic made Hun and Casey’s father the same person, I felt nothing but pure cringe.
Great video 📼 I agree with a decent amount of what you said in your video, but I do disagree with some things. (Probably because I grew up with the 80s/90s area of TMNT and was an adult when this series came out)😅

All three of them (although he also had 3 mutants early in the series but nothing came of them)
Raph was also yusei fudo in yugioh 5ds im pretty sure sure
2003 is the best Adopted version of The Turtles 😌. It’s a beautiful love letter to the classic inspired comics on even pays respects to the original cartoon. Just Incredible.
Growing up around this time was incredible
About the TMNT 2003 comic - it's 7 issues. The first 4 adapt cartoon episodes but the last 3 are original stories.
Interesting, thanks for telling me! I’m just surprised a writer as renowned as Peter David would work on them.
This the best one no debate
My intro to the turtles was the original cartoon
Each turtle is my favorite for a different reason 😂 but I most resonate with Donny as an adult.
This was my definitive version of turtles Don't be wrong I love the '80s show I love the '90 movies but the 2003 is a perfect blend of everything and nothing has been like that since because what Nickelodeon's been doing with the turtles being more hit or misses honestly and most of it's not all that great. So it is good to see the '03 turtles get some love
i love 2012 tmnt and i love tales of the tmnt 2024 and i love rise of the tmnt 2018
They need to make the 2003 show available as a full disc bundle.
18:13
My 20 year old ass is still watching these turtles still the greatest show for me.
7:18 had me geeking 😭😭😭
Yeah, I also watch the full series on TH-cam. The good old days when copy right was a suggestion.
My favorite tent show, and I watched it when I was a late teenager, so i like it for its own sake, no nostalgia 😊
Still surprises me as to how well it adapts the comics
This is my favorite version of TMNT and their version of Casey Jones is my favorite and the reason why I like the character of Casey Jones.
Was a shell of a time
I definitely ignite the fire right now and for the record I'm 2003 series fan who grew up on them, but I feel it's kinda good its fans were treated like shit for a while.
Exactly the same for me
Do yall remember the GameCube , Xbox and PlayStation 2 game series for the ‘03 turtles ? . Instant classic
I'll always support the whiteout eyes through the mask
did not know there was a box set with the series all on it might need to see about getting that honestly this was probably my favorite show as a kid in the early to mid 2000s it would be great to rewatch it
I love all the legit superheroes in the 2003 series. I'd love to see a Silver Sentry solo run.
for us kids born in late 90's this show is the Ninja Turtles best TMNT ever, Donnie is my favorite in this iteration.
I was born in the early 80s and grew up with the 1987 TMNT and I still prefer the 2003 version
My favorite TMNT show! Nice retrospective!
18:14 That is VERY good to know.
Honestly a TMNT anime would be incredible in my opinion
I actually got into the 2003 TMNT version late but without a doubt this was the best version of the turtles & if the get the X-Men 97 treatment I definitely wouldn't be mad at it
This show was my entire childhood
this along with the original teen titans are my favorites of both versions of them respectively.
I loved this show. I wasn't able to catch every episode when it aired but, I did enjoy it's depth. What Shredder did to Baxter was horrifying. I'm gonna have to go back and binge.
Great video, immediately subbed
please upload some more lmao love this style of content
More on the way!
this was underated. I love this show. it was top tier
It’s ironic that 4kids, that created many dubs people liked to hate
Would create such a serious and violent version of TMNT
but
The voice cast was excellent and it soon became my favorite
While 2012 was at least entertaining, and I haven’t really read the comics, the 2003 feel like the most faithful TMNT through animation to date
But that’s just my own opinion
4kids created nothing! They were just licensers for the show. The credit truly goes to Mirage Studios.
@@dwainsimmons3447 sorry, ”adapted”, is that a better word? No need to sound hostile.
And a said “version” to be fair.
While I never see the 2003 version, I'm interested to watch it. I hope to do so once I'm free. I only watch Rise, which is my favourite and the 2012, which I grew up with but it's memorable nonetheless.
Had so many of this show toys
My brother wasborn in the 80s, so the 80s TMNT was the version he grew up with. I was born in the 90s, so the 03’ TMNT and the first live-action movie are what I grew up with. That’s the definitive look of the Turtles that I have in my head. And when the 2011 IDW comic made Hun and Casey’s father the same person, I felt nothing but pure cringe.
Great video 📼
I agree with a decent amount of what you said in your video, but I do disagree with some things. (Probably because I grew up with the 80s/90s area of TMNT and was an adult when this series came out)😅
This is the most manliest versions of the Ninja Turtles since the edgy comics from the 1980s.
Childhood classic
I enjoyed the 2003 version of tmnt. My second favorite is the 2012 one, but I have much memories of it
I actually prefer the turtles having different looks, i think they should each be a different species
