I love the photoshop corrections you included - so helpful to have that visual cue. When we moved into our current house, we had to replace a very expensive, lovely rug that was great in the old space, but looked tacky in the new one because it was too large (like, we were folding the corners over - classy!) and didn't fit anything else in the room.

I’ve been subscribed for a while now, and while your taste is exquisite, (your home is BEAUTIFUL, and your suggestions concerning featured spaces are always spot on) I have FINALLY figured out why I love your videos so much! Your “fixes” aren’t so extravagant that they are out of reach! Always tasteful, always gorgeous, but with a budget in mind. Your approach is effective, and makes the space inviting as well as livable.
Might I also add that you are the KING of the shawl collar fisherman’s sweater, as well? Very nice. Have a great week!

These types of videos are tremendously helpful. You show a "finished product", which looks good as is, but then we see your suggestions and explanations, and I am learning the difference between "looks nice" and "bravissimo!" Thank you again Monsieur LeChic! 💙💙💙

Garrett, you are a genius!!! You have taught us something and you are probably unaware: photoshopping our own space!
I have taken photos to help place green plants into my decor! I've only done one, but it helped me with plant size, type of plant, best planter and overall placement! Brilliant!!!
*** Love the blue jacket hanging on the door knob!

A friend feels that placing two dressing tables together in my bedroom, one for my tv to sit on, and the other, my large makeup lighting stand, same height both, seems awkward, but it looks fabulous, like one long table, just the situation you mention. Thanks for your expertise input on this.

My pet peeves are pictures that are hung too high, rugs that are too small, furniture lined up against the walls, and last, signs that say “Love,” “Laundry,” “Wine.” I must confess that I have one that my granddaughter made that says, Grandma’s Sewing Room, which I cherish.

Matchy -Matchy , glittery stuff, and things you can tell were "Made In China " from across the room are some of my top TACKY things. Oh so many, and also curtains that are not full enough or too short. Got so many I could list , but will stop there! 😝

That gold living room was painful. Thank god for light dimmers. If I was invited to a place like this and the host asked "How do you like my furniture?", I would politely reply "It's very eye catching" and leave before I drank too much.

What GREAT tips, Garrett!!! And for those of us who can't visualize like you can, the after pics with your photoshopped edits are so helpful! One of my pet peeves that I find VERY tacky is words on signs or plaques that give instructions, like "Eat" or "Wash, rinse, repeat?" 🙄 What about those house rules to love one another? 🤔 Or how about, " Don't forget to flush!" 😳 Ugggghhhhh!!! Thank you for always elevating our eye, our taste, and our spaces, Garrett!!! 🤗🥰🤗

We just moved from a three story modern city townhouse to a renovated in the early 2000’s, built in the 70’s, suburban ranch house. Thanks for taking the time to do the photoshopping, Garrett! Two things actually come to mind for easy upgrades (haha, or ways to not look tacky!). One, find a way to hide those cords! Electronics cords can be hidden behind drapes, or clipped up behind furniture. I have an antique cabinet we use for records and a record player as well as a bunch of lamps around it so there are a ton of cords. I used command strips and hooks to hang an outlet strip on the back (without damaging the piece) and to make sure no wires were hanging. Made a huge difference in the visual busyness of that area! Another is, try to take extra labels and text out of the space unless it's super intentional. I'm talking beautiful light fixtures with the warning stickers still on them or candles with price tags. Take a sec to remove them! Let them take their coats off and stay awhile! Thanks again. Love your channel!!

I subscribed a few months ago. Love your channel! Just purchased a 100-year-old small home and trying to decorate it. You are inspiring. Seems all the designers are pushing charcoal grey walls, off-white furniture, cheap-looking vases from Amazon, and some green plants. Oh, and the animal print, karate-chopped accent pillows. Would love to see some more content on mixing textures and patterns and colors. Also mixing antiques with newer pieces. You're the best!

Hi Garrett - Professional Home Stager here. I believe the bedroom with the green accent wall was staged to sell the house (the closet is empty). Perhaps there wasn't enough budget to include a headboard OR the sellers (likely a builder or flipper) wanted to really show off the detailed wall. Just my thoughts. But I do agree there should be a headboard, as well as a larger rug and different art.

The photoshop corrections are so helpful so we can see exactly what you are talking about. Thank you. That last example was perfect...new to look old but it's not working with the gorgeous vintage rug. I can get caught up in stores because all their furniture goes with each other but when you get a piece home it doesn't work!

  • @gurubhaikhalsa9337

About the rugs under the sofa, I can only fit a 5x7 rug in my living room, and I have dogs who tear them up every 6 months or so. It's just so much easier to roll them up, toss them out, and replace them if I don't have to lift the sofa up! I'll have plenty of time to have a nice rug when they are gone ❤ which won't be for a long time, I hope!

Idk...the photoshop to improve the large LR with the small little furnishings, the postage stamp rug, all those colorful LITTLE pillows lined up all the way across that tiny uncomfortable-looking sofa?
Yes, the photoshop improved the look, but imo it's still ghastly🤯... still looks like candycane lane😆 (only bigger)
LOVE that Moroccan styled space with the red pillowed seating, interesting lighting and that awesome black panther print
    (I think?) above the sofa.

Since I'm not a designer, I'm reluctant to call something tacky. I struggle with tacky or just preference (and even if tacky but someone loves it, then go for it). I don't like florals but that doesn't make it tacky. I like tartan plaid so I don't think it's tacky in the right space and in limited amounts. I would love a tartan sofa in my den - yes, old-fashioned and not trendy but I love it. I've had to settle for just 2 tartan pillows because that's all I have room for and my current sofa is serviceable.
However, I feel comfortable calling two things tacky. First is fake flowers/plants which you have pointed out in several videos. Second, and in my opinion, the biggest offender is keeping your dining table laid when you it's not being used for meals. It's just something to dust and looks overly staged. If I'm invited to someone's home and the dining table is set, I'm going to expect food and may be angry (and hungry) if I'm not fed.

I am also enjoying the photo shopped fixes. It helps to see what changes you’d make. As to what feels tacky to me, in a word, kitsch. I think if you have picked up a couple of pieces of folk art in travels, that’s great. But when the house is an explosion of color with things everywhere, there’s nowhere for your eyes to just rest. I particularly hate it when the kitsch is themed. Like a kitchen decorated in chickens or strawberries.

Every picture today was indeed tacky and too much on face.
    Thank you for the session.
Unkempt, cluttered spaces are the most tackiest as per me in any house. My idea of a house is keep it organised and clean as you would keep yourself, neat, clean and presentable:)

My suggestion on what makes a room look tacky is more what is not there than is. If someone doesn’t have any sort or table or ottoman or something similar in front of their couch, that looks tacky to me. It looks like the person was too cheap to fully furnish the room and just bought a couch at least to have a place to sit.

Tackiness: Matchy-matchy stuff, and an attempt at a decor style that clearly isn't their style because it's "fashionable" in three or four pieces that then aren't integrated into the rest of the house/space.

I haven't seen all your videos yet, but I believe you have not shared advice on choosing an interior designer and tips on what to expect, prepare, and demand from them. We are currently in the process of choosing a designer for our new build penthouse and this would be very helpful🙏.

    • @GarrettLeChic
      @GarrettLeChic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Awesome! Thank you! I have discussed it in the past, but we will probably discuss it again at some point. At the end of the day, you should vet them as you do all other professionals like doctors, and lawyers before making a decision. My colleagues that I like are amazing, but also very, very expensive and I don't know their availability. I am personally not accepting any decorating assignments or doing any consultations at this time. Budget will come into consideration of course in the selection process. I would look for designers who are highly experienced preferably with a degree in interior design and with references and examples that are verifiable. There should be great communication and being on the same page with what the desired result should be, and I recommend everything be in writing and checked out by your attorney before signing or agreeing to anything. You can also speak to friends, family and colleagues who have had great experiences with designers and consider them as well. Those are some basics which I hope helps. The result should reflect your tastes and style. Also, thank you for watching and sharing. Please take a moment if you haven't already to support the channel, and join our very valued subscriber family.

As others have noted, I appreciate your framework of teaching how to curate homes rather than staging them. Also: that you encourage folks to consider accessibility. Also: thar you have called out wicker (and baskets) for being dust catchers! (I've been following for some time and just finally subscribed.)

Always good ideas Garrett, and great to learn more. I was wondering about the four lamps in the photo with daybed. I understand the function of each set, but just thought it looked a little odd.

Kathleen - of course it looks 'odd'...in that it's unique (and interesting). But 'odd ' does not necessarily equate to unattractive.
In this case (imo) the slim geometric lines of those arm lamps mimic straight lines in the print's frame & matting, and the tan color of the lamps on each end pull from the tan matting in the print.
The somewhat curved shades on those end lamps lend just enough softness to the overall look, imo. Their slightly curved lines also complement the curved lines in the animal print above the seating (or I think it's an animal print ? - looks like a black panther to me - but maybe not?)
Anyhow, just my opinion/my 2 cents, of courses ;))

Tacky to me is when it is too matchy-matchy. I know of someone who has red rugs inside and even on their outside patio…red placemats and not different shades - all the same shade. It makes me make this face 😬

I'm planning a new kitchen. I need to know! Does vinyl plank flooring look tacky with real wood cabinets? I want the durability and easy maintenance of of the vinyl but I'm afraid it would look obviously fake right next to wood cabinets. Help!

Nothing says tacky like leaving the plastic covers on lamp shades or worse yet plastic sofa covers.

The second one with the green wall. If they do not want a headboard then paint the panel behind the bed the color of the rest of the room. This will ground that forest of pillows. Also it would be less expensive.

I realized something you keep saying that made the lightbulb go off. It's the near-miss that makes the faux high-end look SO wrong. Like how a painting hung just slightly crooked will drive me absolutely nuts. That last room, the one you've showed before, makes me itch! They're SO CLOSE, but honestly I'd have that whole couch reupholstered. Listen, no one faint, but those two cream-colored chairs by the window near the sofa? Do the sofa in the same cream. And yes, get rid of those pillows. This may be the first time I have ever said to do furniture in cream, but it would help so, so much. And I agree, get rid of that ottoman. Just because it's in the set doesn't mean you have to use it. I almost never disagree with you, Garrett! Obviously I think you have great taste. 😂

Not that anyone here does this of course, but I've seen affirmative statement decals used for wall art. In a living room, not a teenager's bedroom. Think Live Laugh Love etc in script a foot tall.

Ha, I always wanted a photographic forest mural wrapped around an entire small room. I like the idea of forcing the perspective. I'm sure it would be extra tacky, but I'm not sure that would stop me.

The accent wall in the bedroom, adding a headboard... should the height of the headboard match the height of the lamps?

It should match the height of the lamps or be taller. I prefer taller.
