I got the best shave ever with the R41. Have been shaving with the 34c for a few years. This is miles better for me. No irritation, smooth glide, no nicks or cuts. Almost the perfect razor if such thing exists :)
Pretty awesome. I am 16 and started to have some facial hair. I just entered the world of wet shaving. Once you start collecting them, you just cannot stop. I am very glad to watch your shows. They are very educational and practical. Thanks.
It's a great razor. I shave daily and use the R41 about 3x a week. One has to be very careful though especially since the angle is a little different than most razors.
I purchased the R41 last week, I have only been DE shaving for four months and have used the Merkur 34C and Parker 22R mostly since I started. I bought the R41 over the Merkur 37c Slant as I was nervous about how aggressive the 37c is reported to be! I have used the R41 twice in 6 days and I love it! I found that with the 34c I needed 3 passes for a decent shave and 4 passes for a perfect shave - with the R41 I achieved a perfect shave (with a P-Lab blue) with two passes! It does feel like you are cutting yourself a lot when you are using it as you really feel the blade on the skin (like a shavette) but I have only had one bleeder so far which was minor & not bad for a newbie!
I just order the R41 Grande since I prefer longer handles and wow I love this shaver! I only needed one pass, no irritation, and I don't have to go over the area more than once which is a big positive.
Shaved with mine this morning. Not a daily shaver. Nice to use once a month to "relearn" what no pressure means. Makes you shave better with a medium aggressive razor.
Good shave Nick. I've used the R41 a couple of times, it is a great razor for mowing down a few days facial hair for sure and the build quality is second to none. Good idea with using the Derby blade. I don't see the Pre de Provence soap around much, I'll need to check it out. Cheers!
Word of warning to new wet shavers! I started using DE safety razor about 2 months ago (Xmas 2016). I am loving it, BUT: I got cocky and jumped from a Merkur 33C to a Muhle R41. First time, I did okay (Voskhod blade, Catie's Bubbles soap). 2nd time, with thick growth like Nick in the video, I tried a Gillette Silver Blue blade and PAA CaD soap and literally tore my face off. I looked like the dude in "Poltergeist" in the bathroom mirror scene. Having now watched Nick's video, I am going to try it again. I think I used too much pressure. Anyway, thanks for the video and I just ordered the Fine aftershave you used in this vid! Keep shaving!
Love my R41 paired with a permasharp razor!! Contrary to what many believe I prefer a sharp razor with this beast. My beard is very coarse and a duller blade in this razor would and has torn my face up in the past. I would recommend this razor for people with medium to coarse beards. If that description fits you then do not fear. This could end up being your favorite razor.
I got the Grande version of this yesterday. Apart from a tiny weeper and a tiny bit of razor burn under my chin (through lack of experience with this razor) I liked the shave. But by god is this thing efficient. I paired it with an Astra SP blade and I think this will be my blade of choice for the R41. Definitely demands respect, but rewards with the closest shaves you can get.
After trying different blades with my R41 for the last 6 months or so, I've found that Treet Platinums work really well with it in terms of smoothness. Cheap too. $8.50 for 100 shipped from Turkey (Alirt2 on eBay). I use the blade once or twice and bin it...
I just started DE shaving couple months ago and your videos have been extremely helpful and informative in guiding me through it. Although I am new to DE shaving, I have quickly become addicted. I've spent way too much money recently to try different razors, blades, brushes and soaps. Through it all, I have relied upon various TH-cam reviews to guide my decisions. Among the numerous reviewers, you have grown to be my favourite and most trusted DE reviewer. Just wanted to take the time to say thank you and hope you continue your excellent work. Not sure if you have done this yet but wondering if you would be willing to provide your favourite websites to purchase your shaving products. Just trying to familiarize myself with my options out there. Thank you very much.
I am new to wet shaving been less then a month, your videos have been so helpful saved me a lot of nice and cuts, thank you for sharing your experience! I have ultra sensitive skin, I use a Feather AS-2 a very mild razor, they aren't the most common razor but was wondering if you could do a review on one!
+nick shaves I have an extremely coarse heavy beard and fairly resilient skin so I can pull off using the r41 often..... 3 passes. I hope you keep it.... Good luck
mannn since i switched to safety razor and good things started to happen to my skin!!! no irritation no ingrown hairs no cuts i wish i dont it b4 love ur channel nick all the support for u
I had a EJ89 and I wanted to improve one step ahead. Then I saw a "Save the man" video about jumping to next level. I chosed the R41 and I'm now the happiest man. I shave everyday and two passes. My shaves has improved using the sharpest blades (feather, PolSilver, etc.). I like a lot your videos and your reviews. Hope you carry on doing it. Best wishes
Just got mine in the mail a couple days ago. Still waiting for my shaving soap. Got about 4 days growth, a bit heavier than yours. Looking forward to trying it.
I bought the R41 with the rose gold handle. It's beautiful. First shave was a bloodbath though. Very aggressive razor. Second shave went much better with only a couple of nicks. Trick is to not use any pressure when shaving. Let the weight of the razor do the job. Ordered a sampler pack of blades to test for a perfect razor/razor blade combo.
@@GunsAndRovers Astra superior platinum, Gillette Nacet stainless, Gillette Platinum, and Feather is what I've been using. I shave every other 3 day's because the R41 is a beast...
I used the Muhle blade that came with it for my first time. The last time my face was as smooth was when I had no facial hair. I'll try some sharper blades once I get used to it. There were a few moments I could have cut myself pretty badly if the blade was any sharper, but it was definitely my fault and not the razor's. I don't know if it was the blade or the razor that helped, but my skin is not irritated at all. Something no cartridge razor has given me before, nor the plastic Wilkinson DE. This might just be my one and only razor for life, unless someday I decide to buy the Grande model.
I have been using Astra platinum blades in my R41 for a while now and really enjoy shaving with it, a weeks growth only takes 2 passes and a little tidy up to clear as in the video and the results are a super close shave. Bought a close comb FaTip Nero Grande recently to try something different but haven't given it much of a run yet, first time was pretty easy going but it did not remove my facial hair as well as the R41. I don't shave every day so will probably find the FaTip more useful if I have to go somewhere and only have a day or so's growth to clear up. I aim to buy a Rockwell 6S in the future but the price is a little steep for me at the moment.
I bought a Muhle R41 Grande alongside an iKon Bulldog Handle. I now use my R41 with the Bulldog handle and use the grande handle on me EJ DE89 making it a Muhle R89 Grande and IMO, it really turned my razors from great to flawless. If anyone is going to do this I reccomend a Gillette Super Stainless on the new R89 Grande and a Personna Red on the R41.
That’s funny you say that because I was just setting up my R-41 for my Shave tomarrow and I was going to put a Personna Red in there but went for a Gillette PermaSharp instead
Used this razor twice so far, definitely not a daily driver! I grow a beard every so often and this is the right tool for the right job. Closed comb razors are better for daily shaving. Mühle razors are top quality, and not any pricier than Merkur. It seems to be a lot cheaper here in Europe than in the US though, which is odd. Usually its the other way around!
This razor, unequivocally is my favorite razor. In fact, I purchased this after only wet shaving for less than a month and couldn't understand why everyone made such a big deal about its aggression. I did not get one nick or cut from it on the first try and to be honest with you, I don't really think that I have ever gotten a cut from the R41. Baby butt smooth every time. Next time, use a Voshkod blade or Gilette Silver Blue. I have Psoriasis and trust me and trauma to my skin could trigger a major outbreak, this has never been an issue.
I've been wanting an R41 for a good while. I prefer the feel of a blade on my face. I tend to lose the angle on other milder razors. I typically use my Slim on 9 for all 3 passes and use straights.
Hi Nick,Love your videos, learned much from you and have same problem set with my face.THANK YOU!!I think I might be able to help you here.R41: Love and trust it after learning curve So much so that I picked it, over 9 other razors, to shave, put on a new tux and walk my baby girl up the church aisle. Key changes vs. Merker closed bar routine:-dropped to 2 passes plus optional light touch up (like you did in your video)-very light pressure (like you did as well)-add a quality preshave product for extra protection (try it, you will see it matters greatly with such an aggressive razor)I have had great luck with pre shave oils and butters as well as a glycerin combo product (Razorock pre barba). The preshave soaps helped but not nearly as much. I have yet to evaluate pre shave creams, so can't say yet.Best regards,Carl
Seconded! I have the new R41Grande. It’s one of my top 3 favourite razors. And I’m not intimidated by the sharpest blades for the R41. I use my favourite Feather, Kai and Perma-Sharp blades in this superb razor. But yes, I shave every third day.
I purchased the R41, from Amazon, about a month ago. The reviews were correct. It's a beautiful razor, but, the handle is far too light. I'm planning on ordering a SS handle to correct the balance. Also, my R41 doesn't quite seat the blade properly. I have slight more blade exposure on one side than on the other.
Dr Nick, I just graduated out of med school, Ive been following your videos for a couple of years now, I remember you said that you were an orthopedic surgery resident, I wanted to ask you if wet shaving has affected your work or if it has had any impact on your life as a doctor, (relaxing after a hard day or smth) also was wondering about when you do these videos? After night shifts or on weekends or something? Its amazing all the work you have put in these videos, maybe you can do a "behind the scenes" video explaining your work, the time you put, when and how you edit them. You have inspired me by letting me know that I can be a doctor and have a hard daily routine but still have a hobby to put some time and effort, learn and make friends outside the work line, maybe you could inspire more with that. Anyway cheers and thank you for keeping the videos comming!
Used the razor, though, my first de razor is the Muhle r89 Grande. Bought the r41 head and swap out with the long handle. For me and daily shaving, the mild r89 Grande works best with a Voskhod blade. I do have Personna Blue/Astra SP/Feather/Kai/PolSilver/Wilkinson/Feather blades along with Catie's Bubbles LPV & Proraso Red shaving soaps. Simpson Badger Silvertip brush. DE Shaving 6 months with the help of your videos. Lovely experience for my African American skin!! Shave on fellas!!! Just do it the traditional de way!!! Straight razor?? Much later!!!
Hi Nick, I used the plastic stuff, until I bought a butterfly Parker 2 months before. I was not satisfied, today I ordered a Mühle 41...hoping to get more quality and satisfaction. I' m watching some of your vids, thx for the advisory and entertainment.
The R41 was my 2nd ever razor and although it could give amazingly quick and close shaves in the end I just thought when I used it I was undertaking a shaving challenge. I was trying to get as good of a shave as possible with avoiding razor burn and cuts but as time went on I found other razors that were as good with greater margin for error. Build quality and finish as usual with Muhle is first class.
I have the R41 and boy can it give burn and irritation. I swapped the handle out for one a bit heavier and it made a massive difference. It was like simply placing the razor where it was needed and it slid down taking the hair with it. I don't do against the grain as that, for me, has proven too much. it certainly sits in my rotation and once mastered it will always give a close, comfortable shave.
You are probably not used too much with aggressive razors. I haven't used R41 yet, but my daily shaver is Merkur Futur. I use it at around 3-4, and I can definitely feel the blade. I honestly love the feeling of it. I feel such better control than with the mild razors. The angle and pressure are everything. You need to take your time and get the feel for the right angle, so you won't feel any tugging or pulling. Once you do that, you will really appreciate an aggressive razor. They usually give more comfortable shaves than mild ones, as they won't get stuck in the hairs, and you won't have to go back over the same area as often. I do two pass shaves, as you say you would like to. But I pretty much go WTG and then straight ATG. The WTG pass is so close with an aggressive razor, then you can go straight at ATG without worrying too much. Not getting BBS, but great shaves, every time, without any irritation or nicks. I do 3 pass shaves on weekends, though. Glad you got a good shave. I hope that you will take a look at more aggressive razors. Maybe Fatip Grande or Merkur Futur.
How does this razor compare to the Merkur 34C in terms of aggressiveness? I am planning on getting the 34C and a Feather Blade, but I might get this instead if it isn't too much more aggressive.
Having not scraped your skin bloody for the first use is not bad. I use the R41 even for my private parts. The razor takes some practice but can be mastered. Had the milder R89 first and quickly upgraded the head to the R41 because it is so close and doesn't clog so easy. Thanks for your videos.
I ordered this soap today due to your remarks. This video is once again awesome - Paul H is growing as a well known you tuber for wet shaving, but your channel is the best to me by a mile - and way to go Jefferson, chewing the door stopper (keep Nick on his feet) - we have a dachshund at home to help us with us, lol!Chris in N.H.
Definitely helps to use a thicker lather with such an aggressive beast; I’m able to just use a thin layer of van der Hagen with mine but I’m a skilled shaved thst took years to master
Great video , i finally ordered one , and will repeat when shaving barely touch face , two finger pressure , super light thank you and see how it goes.
Nick Shaves can you review the Bevel razor and let me know what you think. I would really like to know what you think of the razor and the products it comes with.
i need super iridium blade and 3 passes to get smooth with the r41, but then i have to skip the ATG pass on the next two shaves to be safe and not get irritation. however if used everyday with the same blade (or an astra SP to make a little more gentle) WTG and XTG, so just two passes skipping the ATG pass, it's a wonderful razor that gets a very quick and irritation free shave. never do buffing or to much touch up with it or it's going to bite! and never use a slant after a 3 pass shave with the r41. the sharpest blade i can use in it is the iridium, a 7 OC sharp edge or a feather are uncomfortable already from the first pass. this is how it works for me.
sorry for this question, but I literally just started traditional wet shaving with a Merkur 34C and a boar brush. so I'm fairly new to this still , but what does it mean when a safety razor is really "aggressive" or "mild"?
I'm new too but I think it shows a lot more blade, and you'll have to be extra careful while shaving or else you might cut yourself due to how aggressive it is. And it can get a closer shave.
+Andrew Chase ohh okay makes sense. yeah it's been well over a week since I started traditional wet shaving. Pair my 34C with a derby blade and some Proraso shave cream has improved my shaving experience
This doesn't really hold true for me, I have had very aggressive razors that were not very efficient and mild razors that were very efficient. A lot comes down to who the person is describing it. I for instance would describe my Wolfman as fairly mild, very smooth, and extremely efficient. Where as my King Cobra is much more aggressive, very efficient, and semi smooth. Each person will have a different way of describing their personal use. When I use the R41, my face is slightly more irritated than with other razors but doesn't remove hair much more efficiently than my Wolfman.
Just tried out a Derby for the first time this morning myself! I guess your video really attests to the razor itself needing to be of quality as well as the blade because my shave was only 3 days of stubble and it wasn't even close to as smooth looking as your strokes, but all I have is my original Van der Hagen razor. The blade got it done for me, but not without putting some work into it. No weepers though. NOW I have to check out that Pre de Provence No.63.
Hey Nick I definitely have neck sensitivity can you give me any advice? I am fine WTG and XTG but ATG is guaranteed burn. However due to a thick beard two passes is not even a close shave. I typically do WTG , WTG, XTG and an ATG pickup to get a close shave. Any advice is appreciated.
I love this razor, but I use it only when I have plenty of time to shave, and with my best shaving soaps like Haslinger, MDC or Saponificio Varesino. Some blades do not work well in it, I tend to favor Polsilver and Feather. When done properly it is the closest DE shave with no irritation, need only two passes and small touch up. No. 63 has one of the best scents, and the balm is also good.
Mühle R41 was my first double edge razor I bought, and with which I learned to shave. After a while I bought another one, Merkur 39C Slant, which I like better nowadays, because it's not that aggressive and makes great shaves. Every now and then I got with the R41, because I have some good (and bloody) memories with it, but nowadays I can make a decent shave even with it :) I also have YSL l'Homme, which I adore, as well as it's night counterpart La Nuit de l'Homme. ive that one a sniff. Awesome stuff also! PS. Love your channel! Keep it up :)
Once you get use to the R41 nothing else will give you the quality of shave as quick and easily. I use the DS Cosmetics ZO razor. It is the stainless steel Chinese equivalent. CNC made. The Stainless Muhle is $171. The DS Cosmetics ZO is $48. I bought it for that reason. Its 316 stainless as well. I think the Muhle is pressure injected 303.
My mom gave me that same Cologne for Christmas except it was the Pure Parfum version. Anyways it does smell really good, YSL L'Homme, and KC Mankind, and Chanel Egoiste are my favorite scents
Am i right, Razor blade, shaving soap, pre shave oil, open or closed comb, taking shower or sauna before shave has much bigger impact for total experience than what razor you actually use? I mean i have watched several videos and biggest difference on razor is on shaft not actual head that holds blade meaning they look so much same only small differences.
I got my R41 recently and it's way way better with a performance and shave than EJ89. I need only 2 passes with Muhle while with EJ89 I need 3 passes to achieve same results. It's a great razor!!
I heard Muehle heads and handles are compatible with Edwin Jaggers'. I have a question about the head compatibility. Is it possible to fit Muehle R41 head into EJ DE89 handle? What about pairing R41 head cap with EJ89 comb and vice versa. I think there should be a problem because the head caps has different shapes and screw length, right? Thanks
You can put a complete R41 head on a Edwin Jagger handle, but given the lack of grip on the majority of EJ safety razors (excepting the '3D Laser Diamond' handle variety) wouldn't recommend it. You would be much better served by a Maggard MR5 'bamboo' style handle. You can also use an Edwin Jagger top cap on a Mühle R41 base plate (I recently did this to test out if the slightly narrower top cap would increase the aggression, but I didn't notice much (if any) difference). The height is slightly increased, but I changed back to the Mühle top cap. Both top cap screw lengths looked identical in height. I would think putting a Mühle top cap on an EJ base plate MIGHT make it milder, but I can't say for certain (nor do I care to try, given I find my EJ Kelvin too mild for myself as it is). I think both Mühle and Edwin Jagger co-designed the (Edwin Jagger) DE89/(Mühle) R89 head.
Hi nick love your videos have made my shaves much more enjoyable and better quality of shaving due to using shaving soaps blades DE safety razor thanks for that, what do you think of cold water shaves and can you do a video of a cold water shave in the future ? Thanks !
Hi Nick, I use the Rose Gold one. Stunning Razor. Cant shave everyday with it though. A really good moisturiser afterwards is essential. Baxter of California works really well. Thanks, Steve in Scotland.
I even tried to use a Derby blade in my Fatip piccolo OC and it felt like shaving with a dull steak knife. I'm convinced there's just no way for me to get a decent shave with them.
Fantastic, beautiful handle. The grip on there isn't as good as with a Merkur 34c, but with some alum its not an issue at all. But overall, one of the best looking handles out there
I never had a very aggressive safety razor before and I'm looking for one is the merkur 37c or the merkur progress up to highest setting aggressive like the r41? I love those 2 razors but I'm not sure how aggressive they are.
Neither the Merkur 37C, nor the Merkur Progress (at 5+1) is as aggressive as the Mühle R41. The Merkur Futur is more aggressive overall (from what I've read) than the Merkur Progress, but (from what I've heard) the Futur at 6 is not as aggressive as the Mühle R41. I don't have any issue using the Mühle R41 -- even using a Feather blade -- and it's probably my favorite at this point. If that sounds interesting, you might want to purchase the Mühle R41 head with a Maggard MR5 handle. (Some have said the standard Mühle handle is 'slippy'; it's certainly not as functional as the MR5). If you're not ready for that, you might want to consider the open comb Fatip Piccolo or Grande (though you can't easily interchange handles with this razor brand, due to it's unique threading). If you're ready for a really aggressive razor (at least in my experience), you can get a closed comb iKon Tech head. That seems to be in another league of aggression -- and you will feel the blade. I'm still trying to figure out the best angle, but most likely one needs to start with the top cap against your beard and lower the blade to your face. Hopefully I'll come across a razor that's as aggressive as the iKon Tech but as smooth (in my experience) as the Mühle R41. Who knows if that will happen, given their radically different designs. The adjustable Parker Variant is a great option for new and seasoned wet-shavers. One review said it can (in addition to mild shaves) give a shave similar to both the R41 and iKon Tech. New wet-shavers really need to consider adjustable safety razors (like the Parker Variant [best option], Merkur Progress and Rockwell 6C) when starting out. Yes, a little more expensive, but it will grow with you (as you learn how to shave with a safety razor) and is a better investment over the long term. Still, light pressure and skin stretching is a must at all times for BBS shaves.
Try YSL La nuit de l'homme. Better performance than l'homme. A more manly/darker fragrance. Not quite as fresh :-) more leather notes. Love the vids btw. Regards from the UK.
Jefferson looks like he could use a shave! lol Yes, that Muhle R41 is very aggressive to say the least. I got one as a Xmas gift (Rose Gold model). I used it up until last month until I gave it to a friend. I have about 30 years of DE shaving experience and I could handle it, but it really requires you to be on your toes, mindful and in the moment. You can't be lazy and you have to be gentle and light handed. I've had open comb razors before but yikes that sucker was aggressive.
Hey Nick. thanks fro great videos. I just have to ask.. Does your neck hair grow in different direction? I see you always shave down on one side and upwards on the other on the first pass :p
Great Razor if it's suited to you. Review and try the Parker 26C, so comfortable with BBS results. Great solid design! Parker only $30, Muhle is $56 on Amazon. Go for it!!! You'll be pleasantly surprised!!!!...........
Kudos for taming the beast from Germany. That being said, the most impressive member of the cast was the Pre de Provence soap. The lather was like meringue. Opaque, and creamy. Nick, have you tried their cream in a tube? I'm on the fence about buying it.If you have, did it perform equally amazing?
The main thing that gives the R41 "shave power" is actually the ***angle*** the blade is held at by the R41 head. That is pretty extreme.... Otherwise, the razor has excellent maneuverability and weight characteristics. It is a great all round safety razor - if you handle it with a light touch.
Im kinda new to shaving, and i find your videos reeeeally helpfull! Just bought my first safety razor and i cant wait to try it out! Lots of love from norway!
Hey Nick I have just replaced the handle on my R41 with an Ikon Bulldog. This has turned it into a sensational razor and it's a modification that I can't recommend highly enough 🖒🖒🖒
It be nice if you get a little closer to the camera 📷 to see the shave more. You seem a little far from camera. But all in all good video. Like watching these. So I have an idea 💡 what to buy or get next for a razor and blade.
I got the best shave ever with the R41. Have been shaving with the 34c for a few years. This is miles better for me. No irritation, smooth glide, no nicks or cuts. Almost the perfect razor if such thing exists :)
What angle do you keep when you shave? How often do you shave? Do you have a sensitive or a strong skin?
Pretty awesome. I am 16 and started to have some facial hair. I just entered the world of wet shaving. Once you start collecting them, you just cannot stop. I am very glad to watch your shows. They are very educational and practical. Thanks.
It's a great razor. I shave daily and use the R41 about 3x a week. One has to be very careful though especially since the angle is a little different than most razors.
This was my first Safety razor
What would you say the correct angle is for the MuhleR41????
@@jonhawkins2374 I heard that Geo and Ohio use a 15 degree angle instead of the traditional 30
Aren't voshkods smooth? It's sharp but smooth in my experience.
Excellent review Nick! I enjoy your insights and excellent commentary. Great work!
Now I'm sad because I have soft beard, this razor attracted me
I got the Grande version of this yesterday.
The r41 is my go to razor with 1.5 +days growth. I love it with a Voskhod
I think I'll try it with a Voskhod next, those are great blades
+nick shaves I have an extremely coarse heavy beard and fairly resilient skin so I can pull off using the r41 often..... 3 passes. I hope you keep it.... Good luck

Where you using a feather blade and what is the best comb????
@@jonhawkins2374 I used a sampler pack. But my favorite blades are Gillette Silver Blue blades or Japanese steel blades.
R41 w/Feather blade is my favorite DE but it is not for everyone. Most aggressive I've used but I like it that way.
+smarte861 that's an aggressive shave! No way my face would tolerate that. But I'm sure it gives a close shave
I'm guessing SS stands for stainless steel. Which handle did/will you order?
444 I ended up purchasing a Weber handle. It's marine grade stainless. Very heavy with aggressive checkering for grip.
I'm extremely happy with it.
Nice review. IMO the R41 (2011) is the best razor for anything >2 day growth. The R41 (2013) is much less aggressive I find.
Be careful! Do not cut your bracciol
Man i have rly thick strong beard i cant shave some parts of my face with Gillette mach 5 fusion so is this Muhle R41 and Feather good for me?
I was the same yes the pairing is excellent , you must have a very light touch, the feather is key.
I tried this razor and then settled on a Parker open comb, brilliant! I do like the Muhle R89 too!
They are both great razors!
Definitely helps to use a thicker lather with such an aggressive beast; I’m
able to just use a thin layer of van der Hagen with mine but I’m a skilled shaved thst took years to master
Great video , i finally ordered one , and will repeat when shaving barely touch face , two finger pressure , super light thank you and see how it goes.
Nick Shaves can you review the Bevel razor and let me know what you think. I would really like to know what you think of the razor and the products it comes with.
You should do a review on Krampert's Finest Bay Rum and Frostbite soaps and aftershaves.
i need super iridium blade and 3 passes to get smooth with the r41, but then i have to skip the ATG pass on the next two shaves to be safe and not get irritation. however if used everyday with the same blade (or an astra SP to make a little more gentle) WTG and XTG, so just two passes skipping the ATG pass, it's a wonderful razor that gets a very quick and irritation free shave. never do buffing or to much touch up with it or it's going to bite! and never use a slant after a 3 pass shave with the r41. the sharpest blade i can use in it is the iridium, a 7 OC sharp edge or a feather are uncomfortable already from the first pass. this is how it works for me.
So the big 50¢ question which is more aggressive the R-41 or a Gem/Ever-Ready open comb?
sorry for this question, but I literally just started traditional wet shaving with a Merkur 34C and a boar brush. so I'm fairly new to this still , but what does it mean when a safety razor is really "aggressive" or "mild"?
When they say aggressive most of the time it usually means blade gap or the amount of blade exposure
Will watch for your review of Pre de Provence #63.
I need to get some of that I think.
Muhle R41 is my favorite ,with a Voskhod blade ,and Jack black shave cream,💈
Oi mano suave ? Sou brasileiro, hi from brazil
Kkkkkk n sei pq to falando isso mas fds
Every now and then I got with the R41, because I have some good (and bloody) memories with it, but nowadays I can make a decent shave even with it :)
I also have YSL l'Homme, which I adore, as well as it's night counterpart La Nuit de l'Homme. ive that one a sniff. Awesome stuff also!
PS. Love your channel! Keep it up :)
how would you compare it to a cartridge in terms of closeness.
... hey which razor is better merkur 34C or The Muhle R41 ???? Of course, your experience that you have both
Very Nice products. I have Just bought that razor and i love all muhle's products. Greetings from venice italy
Is this the Grande?
Have you tried derby shave soap/stick and wilkinson sword soap
Nick why haven't you made any new videos
I have a 38c . It's to mild what do you suggest for a more aggressive razor? Say around a 7 on a 1 to 10 range. Thanks great video
Really enjoy your daily shave videos Nick! Thanks for the great videos!
Hi nick love your videos have made my shaves much more enjoyable and better quality of shaving due to using shaving soaps blades DE safety razor thanks for that, what do you think of cold water shaves and can you do a video of a cold water shave in the future ?
Thanks !
It’s Jon awesome job guy the ristretto is like the mullet r41 very agresive razor as well guy
Is this the one and only cameo of Jefferson in Nick`s videos? 3:43
hello nick, Have you tried the Italian fatip open comb? A very aggressive razor but very smooth in my opinion. All the best nick. Glenn.
The king but not for boys! Mine has the old 2011 cap and there’s even more blade exposure!
Hi Nick,
I use the Rose Gold one. Stunning Razor. Cant shave everyday with it though. A really good moisturiser afterwards is essential.
Baxter of California works really well.
Thanks,
Steve in Scotland.
I even tried to use a Derby blade in my Fatip piccolo OC and it felt like shaving with a dull steak knife. I'm convinced there's just no way for me to get a decent shave with them.
perma sharp blade for me in my Piccolo !
what aftershave is that
any comments in the handle?? Thinking of picking up just the head for occasional use with another handle.
Fantastic, beautiful handle. The grip on there isn't as good as with a Merkur 34c, but with some alum its not an issue at all. But overall, one of the best looking handles out there
I brought this razor cause of you but i use a feather blade. I find the derby to be a bit of a dull blade
You mentioned maybe using the R41 when you have several days of growth...do you still use the straight razor?
Thank you (:
What pharmacy did you say you were at in manhattan? Hitting up the city this weekend and I'm looking into that!
+Nedyroc2 Pasteur Pharmacy! It's a must. There are 2 locations, the one more south has a much better selection. Hit it up!
Hey Nick I'm looking to get a synthetic brush but it'll be my first. So what synthetic brush do you recommend?
would you consider doing a muhle r41 with feather blade
For beginners is better r 89?
Nice shave
Try YSL La nuit de l'homme. Better performance than l'homme. A more manly/darker fragrance. Not quite as fresh :-) more leather notes. Love the vids btw. Regards from the UK.
Thank you Nick, I got into wet shaving because of you.
Hey Nick, if by chance you have decided to sell that razor I'd love to give it a try!
is the angle the same as others...???
+Bu Jammy thx alot
Hey Nick. thanks fro great videos. I just have to ask.. Does your neck hair grow in different direction? I see you always shave down on one side and upwards on the other on the first pass :p
How often do you use that razor to shave?
Great Razor if it's suited to you. Review and try the Parker 26C, so comfortable with BBS results. Great solid design! Parker only $30, Muhle is $56 on Amazon. Go for it!!! You'll be pleasantly surprised!!!!...........
hmm, am looking for a new razor, thanks for the tip.
Alexander de Leon the cream doesn't lather.
Yes. I'm aware it doesn't lather. It explains why I saw it at a reduced price when this review aired. Luckily I didn't buy it.
The main thing that gives the R41 "shave power" is actually the ***angle*** the blade is held at by the R41 head. That is pretty extreme.... Otherwise, the razor has excellent maneuverability and weight characteristics. It is a great all round safety razor - if you handle it with a light touch.
Shaving a 5-day beard is easy. It's much harder to shave a one-day-beard. I wonder how the R41 would fare on a one-day-beard.
i agree. this is a crucial factor.
Hey nick please review feather popular safety razor .
Is that the 2011 or 2013 model?
What's your favorite boar brush so far Nick?
Im kinda new to shaving, and i find your videos reeeeally helpfull! Just bought my first safety razor and i cant wait to try it out! Lots of love from norway!
My first de razor
Hey Nick I have just replaced the handle on my R41 with an Ikon Bulldog. This has turned it into a sensational razor and it's a modification that I can't recommend highly enough 🖒🖒🖒
Awesome! I'm finally getting a Merkur 34C next week. Been using a Van Der Hagan from Target. Can't wait to use a good quality razor.
U should try timeless for 200 usd, it is great
It be nice if you get a little closer to the camera 📷 to see the shave more. You seem a little far from camera. But all in all good video. Like watching these. So I have an idea 💡 what to buy or get next for a razor and blade.
