  • During a U.S. Senate hearing focused on combating online child sexual exploitation, the CEOs of Meta, X, TikTok, Snap, and Discord were subjected to rigorous questioning. Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, took the stand and addressed the audience during the Senate Judiciary Committee session in Washington. Inside the hearing chamber, numerous parents stood, anticipating the arrival of the CEOs, clutching images of their children.
Last year, the committee endorsed multiple bills, among them one aimed at revoking tech firms' immunity from civil and criminal liabilities under laws concerning child sexual abuse material, initially proposed in 2020. However, none of these bills have yet been enacted into law.

Also I don’t believe that the “drivers” or the “shooter” in the analogies are the parents. I think the actual harasser are the ones. There is nuance to everything. I agree with senate that on the very particular point that Parents are not that Tech-savvy and may not be able to provide the right attention to the children and the entire responsibility shouldn’t be on them. But then Senate puts the entire responsibilities on the Companies, which is also wrong. A Problem is never solved if you put the blame on one entity, and better, you shouldn’t waste on blaming one and other. All three parties, The Companies, Parents, & the government have to put in their part to stop the forth party that is the harasser and offenders. You may sue the companies for not doing their part but once they come in front of you, you should not do hearings just with the sole motive of shaming the companies and domonizing them, which felt like this senate was doing for their own political gains.
There has to be understanding between the parties. It felt like these senators don’t know anything about technology and its limitations. All parties should know what are the limitations and abilities of each other one in the matter. Companies should know the limitations of parents, and government. Government should know the limitations of companies and technology. Problems are solved this way. I’m sorry but this sent hearing didn’t feel like they were trying to get to a solution but rather just felt like public shaming of companies.

They rake in financial assets and are allowed to shield them so that they can't legally be held responsible. And if by chance they are found liable, many of them have managed to get Congress to agree to forcing the taxpayers to pay their financial penalties. People best wake up. These hearings are actually a joke. The senators won't even let Zuckerberg respond and they know that many of the issues with Facebook and their technology cannot be simply solved through simple means. The "Yes and No" question was actually also a joke. Zuckerberg doesn't just have multiple billions of dollars in cash just lying around to give to people. Most of his net worth is in businesses and although what happened to the victims was a tragic event, it doesn't make sense for one person to compensate for everything that happened (as the senator implied he should use his OWN money). The responsibility to check to dangers lies with the parents and of course Facebook has responsibilities as well to create tools that help eliminate these dangers. Teens should be educated by their parents (maybe this can be implemented into Facebook's app) to know what dangers lie especially when dealing with unknown people on the internet, and how to deal with them (not adding people they don't know, etc.). It is extremely difficult to create a 100% perfect gate against bad people on the internet, and so teens and children alike should understand the risks associated with social media and how to deal with it. It's almost comical that Facebook is being sued for "hooking teens." That's what social media is for and again, it's up to the parents to regulate the time kids spend on things like TV, Games, and Social Media.

Compensating does not help the situation. Compensating could even promote these problems. As well, it is not just the ceos fault for these incidents. Each person has their own responsibility. People have killed themselves from crashing cars because the car was given as a tool to have efficient travel. However, people are utilizing this tool dangerously and therefore goes through crashes or whatnot. Is that the fault of the creator of the car? Should car companies compensate everyone who has crashed using their car? Would that help the situation. I can state so many analogies and examples of real life situations that demonstrate how unfair the senator was questioning the CEOs. The CEOs are also the only ones being emotionally set and trying their best to deal with the situation going as far to apologizing just because he was told to. You can tell he felt bad for the situation. However, the actions against the CEOs are unfair. Yes I know many and are affected by bad things on social media, but you don’t see me promoting hurt within myself. I know how to protect myself. And that is the only way to solve this situation. The CEOs can only do so much. If you really think for the safety of people, you need to focus on the root problem which is the community, and not blame it on a single person.
