  • Solar pond aerator using two 100 watt solar panels with a 12 inch diffuser.
I spent under $600.00 for the project. Saved over $2000 by building it myself compared to purchasing the kit from a pond magazine.
    • How To Build Your Own ... Deano OutDoors provided all the information I needed to complete this project. Check out his link to see a list of the items used. After seeing his aerator working on his video, I purchased the same items since I knew they worked.
If you have any questions about this project, leave a comment and I'll try to answer them for you.
Check out my channel for other solar off grid projects I've done at the pond.

Solar has been updated. Now have 900 watts running cabin and pond. Pond is 25’ deep. Needed big air pump to run 2 deep diffusers. Also have 6 total deep cycle batteries. I’ve got enough power for me and the neighbors now. Pond is clear and fish are spawning.

Cool ideas using garden hose and wood to cut cost 👍

Adding a 2nd diffuser in shallow part for winter use. Another section of garden hose all ready to go.

Why wouldn't you use twelve volt air pump if you can't run it all night your solar isn't big enough adding a inverter makes it less efficient so I think it's a work in progress

Nice setup I’ve been trying to DIY MY 1/4 pond on the cheap and ended up buying a solar kit with battery backup from Missouri wind and solar. The only issue is the depth they suggest which is 6 ft I have a 9 ft deep pond but I’ll try it anyways how’s your setup been doing it looks great 👍

It's been doing awesome. No pond dye this year. The water is nice and clear. Tomorrow 7/15/22, I'm adding another 12" diffuser disk in about 5' or 6' of water for use during the winter. After doing some research, I've learned that the diffuser in the deep part of the pond should be turned off during the winter to keep the warm water from being disturbed. Last winter I had approx. 3' of ice on the pond. The new disk will be on all winter to help oxygenate the water and maybe even keep the ice open in that spot. My deep disk is in approx. 15' of water.

I turned the deep diffuser off this winter and just ran the 10' diffuser. Kept the ice open all year. approx. 3'+ ice this winter. Only found 2 fish floating this spring. Was just out today catching nice perch and a large bass. 14". Everything seems to be working great. I pieced mine together by watching other videos on here. I think I spend under $600 or $700 for everything. I have diffusers at 10' and 25'.

How do you find the pump holds up running at that depth over the cold temps of winter? Any issues?

Still going strong. No issues. Haven’t replaced any parts or diaphragms yet.
Runs all summer and all winter. Only shuts off in the evening.
      No fish kill this spring.

Mike you did a great job, you said you got everything off internet, i'm going to try and copy your system, I'm in central Illinois, did your hose freeze up

No freeze ups. The pond stayed open all winter. Only had a few times where it froze over on extremely cold cloudy days and nights. Always opened back up when the sun hit it.

Nice , how do you prevent the battery to get fully discharged ?

The charge controller shuts off the power going to the inverter when it reaches a low voltage. I have mine set at 10.7 volts. That setting is adjustable to whatever voltage you want. When it recharges to almost full, the controller turns the inverter back on.

How big is your pond? I'm wanting to do the same.

The pond is approx. 200' x 200'. deepest is approx. 25'. I turned the deep diffuser off this winter and just ran the 10' diffuser. Kept the ice open all year. approx. 3'+ ice this winter. Only found 2 fish floating this spring. Was just out today catching nice perch and a large bass. 14". Everything seems to be working great.
