    Would you like to see more content like this? If you would, I'd *really appreciate you sharing it with someone who might enjoy it!* It involved 45 video layers, a dozen audio layers, and a whole week worth of 8-12 hour days. I didn't realise it would take this long, but if enough people want to see more, then maybe you'll see the Helm's Deep or the Seige of Minas Tirith on here sometime. Stay nerdy!

      Yeah you are right about the part where he uses Bain, that's unrealistic and odd but hey, it's fantasy. Indeed Beorn is a great character, hehe it's a shame that Tolkien didn't described how his son Grimbeorn the Old was doing in time of War of the Ring (Beorn was already dead by that point), all we know is that the land of Beornings was attacked (Frodo saw vision of Orcs coming out of the mountains to burn and pillage at Amon Hen). From Th Hobbit we learn how Beorn's descendants all inherited his powers of shapeshifting and other such gifts.

    One thing I would quickly like to point out: Thorin was overcome with greed, and never had any intent on giving the men or the elves any of the treasure; he merely said he would to buy time, while sending letters for Dain to hurry there. When Dain arrived, the elves and the men tried once again to ask for gold, but they were met with arrows from Thorin's bow before they could even get close enough to say anything.
    Also, Bilbo did not return "incredibly wealthy"; believing that others deserved the treasure more, and not knowing how he would cart all that treasure home, he decided instead to take two small chests: one filled with gold, one filled with silver; such that a strong pony could carry. He then collected the troll hoard on his way home, but he had to spend a lot of his reward buying back his possessions, as the Hobbits assumed he had died and auctioned his belongings.

      Perhaps, but he did have to spend much of it buying back his belongings after the Hobbits auctioned it all off; having assumed he had died. Plus, the book specified "two small chests; such that a strong pony could carry".

    • @Sivart343
      @Sivart343 5 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      @@matthewmuir8884 Bilbo was independently wealthy prior to the events of the Hobbit, and also I do seem to recall he collected the troll hoard on the return journey in addition to his two chests of gold. Bilbo employed at least a gardener, and unless I am mistaken collected rents from Bagshot Row. Additionally, the epilogue notes that his waistcoat has gold buttons opposed to brass. I would say that going from wealthy enough to not have a day job to wealthy enough to get a reputation for gift giving and some degree of extravagance would be incredibly wealthy, even if his contemporaries exaggerated his wealth in rumor.

      "The wealth of Moria was not in gold or jewels, but mithril.
      Bilbo had a shirt of mithril rings that Thorin gave him.
      I never told him, but its worth was greater than the value of the Shire."
      Incredibly wealthy can be taken literally in this case....

    • @matthewmuir8884
      @matthewmuir8884 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @Sivart343 True that he was independently wealthy beforehand, he did collect the troll hoard on the return journey, and he did replace the brass buttons that had fallen off with gold buttons. I'm just pointing out that he returned only with enough that a strong pony could carry, and he had to spend quite a bit of it, in very sharp contrast to the originally agreed 1/14th share of the treasure and Dain having wanted it that Bilbo be the most richly rewarded of all of them.

    This is what I wanted the movie to feature. The tactics and strategies is what made the battle seem so real. The movie didn't provide them, so the battle became a mess. The clash between the dwarves and elves work, but after that it all goes downhill. The worms, elves jumping over the dwarven shield wall, the messy battle in Dale and, the biggest offender, Thorin's charge from the mountain. In the book it makes some sense. Yes there is only 13 of them, but they are armed and armored with the finest dwarven weapons and armor, they have complete surprise and come at the goblins on their flank. This panics them, and Thorin is swiftly reinforced by his kin and allies, leading a do or die, all or nothing, charge at Bolg himself. It has a logic to it, Thorin has the (edit) moment*um*, the goblins are in disarray, if he can kill Bolg... But he doesn't manage it. He can't break through Bolg's guard. His attack is bogged down, the goblins rally, and he's surrounded and cut down, his two cousins falling defending his body.
    That's what I wanted in the movie. Not necessarily every detail, but the spirit of it, more sense less flash.

    • @blockobutter

      They wanted a quick action at the end. Realistic battle tactics, most of the audience won't give a shit about. The only people who would give a shit about it are the hardass I-wanted-it-exactly-as-the-book fuckers like you and me. However, it's still a movie that needs to appeal to the masses who may or may not have read the book (and even if they did they wouldn't care about realism of battle tactics.) The battle looked cool, and that was enough for them. That was the best the team could do to compromise accuracy with general cinematography. Same with every other book adaptations. The lotr movies were better done, but many things were added/ modified to suit the environment of the film. If the book had been copy and pasted into the movie, it would have been an undoubtedly shit movie altogether, to book readers or not.

      Agreed, especially about the movies being crap. Peter Jackson is great with cinematography and emotional music, but completely useless with battles. There's almost no sense of a chain of command or greater tactical planning, and the battle lines always get abandoned after the first three seconds because he thinks hundreds of individual duels look cool.

    • @AnnaMarianne
      @AnnaMarianne 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a good question. Generally speaking Dwarves don't seem to produce their own food, but aquire it through trade. So how did they historically survive in similar situations, which must have been at least reasonably reoccuring to require preplanning. They must usually have been stocked up well with unperishing food.
      In this situation there would have been nothing in Erebor, but Dain probably would have brought provisions. How much could he have brought? And how could they have gotten them inside Erebor? Let's assume they had carts laden with food with them when they journeyd from the Iron Hills. They could have left those carts guarded in the hills. The plan was that once the reinforcements had breached the lines of Elves and Men and gotten inside Erebor, they would have reopened some of the side entrances to flank the enemy. They knew the enemy couldn't besiege the entire mountain. So if those theoretical guarded provisions existed somewhere reasonably nearby, they could have brought them in through some opened side entrance, hopefully before it was found out by the enemy scouts.
      And if they survived long enough in the mountain, they could probably hope for even more Dwarvish allies to arrive and force the enemy to give up. I think they would have been in far better position convincing other Dwarves to help them than the Mirkwood Elves or the Lakemen would have been in finding allies. The Dwarves of the Blue Mountains surely would have sent help - many of them were refugees of Erebor themselves. But why would Elrond or Galadriel get involved in this mess? Or what help the scattered Woodsmen could or would give to their relatives?
      Just my theory.

      Actually in the book the 5th army was Wargs (evil wolves). While Goblins often used them as mounts, Wargs were actually an intelligent race of creatures with their own language. The relationship between Goblins and Wargs described in the book is alliance, not master and servant. The movies screwed up and downgraded them to generic CGI monsters. Instead they added a second Goblin army. Lame.
      On the other hand, for some reason Tolkien didn't include the Eagles as one of the armies, despite being highly intelligent creatures. My guess is they were left out because they're basically air force and didn't participate in the ground battles. Likewise the bats on the Goblins' side didn't count. But that's just my guess.
