  • Hello
Episode 5 in this series we attempt to repair 2 x AM American CB walkie talkies from the 1970s, I had thought these radios had been lost, they were the first radios that I ever owned and started my fascination with the hobby, sadly upon turning the radios on they didn't work, but can I fix them? and will they still work?

All those years ago, when I used to buy similar 49MHz walkie talkies, I often wondered why they had a morse code button. Now I know ! At distances where the voice signal becomes unreadable, the tone from the morse button comes through loud and clear. Wish I had realised that at the time ! My best memory of these radios was when I connected it to two 9v batteries in series (hoping for a better range). It was a surprise to hear the BBC's TV audio from the local mast ! Memories !

I remember these radios. Like you, this is what got me interested in two way radios as a child. When I grew into my teens I was given a three channel radio from radio shack. It had channels 9, 14 and 19. I turned it on one day after school and heard a guy on 14 saying he wanted to sell the cb that he was using. I convensed my dad to take me to buy it. It was a realistic Navajo trc440 with a d104 desk mic and a 5/8 wave ground plane. My dad got it all for $60.00. I just got back into radio a couple years ago. Thanks for taking me back to my childhood memories.

I had a pair of the 49 MHz versions of these radios, I remember my dad taking me to our local CB shop in Bromsgrove to buy them in the late 70’s / early 80’s, was I excited! Range sucked but I remember having loads of fun out of them, happy times.

Brilliant. I had the exact same radios in 1978 as well. I think they were from Tandy but could have been an electronics store in a covered market My radios were all black HE made with orange tipped antenna. Brilliant.

Just yesterday I got my hands on a pair of the Search 2s to go along with my General Electric CB, AM moniter and 49mhz transceiver base station. They both work perfectly but I totally forgot that old kids radio used to not have any squelch haha. I remember having to fight with that when I was younger. I just wish there was a way to adjust that internally and then I might be able to still use them like I was younger but more practical

Enjoyed this video very much, thank you. made me remember Tandy Radio Shack walkie talkies in the 70s which my father bought. Had a plain shortwave radio also which I could get the BBC and VOA from the Philippines. 🙂

I learnt many swear words from a pair of Transair branded units given to me as an 8 year old for Christmas.
By adding a nice length of wire to the antenna, and sitting up a tree, you could hear all the channels at once!
Some really interesting characters on the air too. Any wonder Mum took them off my brother and I :)

I am younger, I had an NS-881 radio, they had a worse range than yours. You have 'brand'. My colleague had 49Mhz versions, they could reach 250 meters, they were amazing. My NS-881 27Mhz radios had a range of 50 meters.
In the past, microwave devices like UHF were forbidden to civilians as dangerous, and power and working time limits were applied. Even VHF 150 Mhz were dangerous only for important services. Users of mobile devices VHF and above (services) were paid compensation for negative effects on the body.

cool vid, thanks for sharing- I had something similar with morse code functioning as a kid. Interesting that they used to transmit on CB channel 14. On other forums I've asked if CW on CB is allowed & they all say no, it's illegal. When did the law change?

We had a pair of GE channel 14 walkie talkies when I was a kid back then. They were a bit larger with a light gray housing and black face plate. The batteries were inside a front flap at the bottom of the face plate. about the same location but accessed from the bottom front instead of the bottom. They didn't get any better range and the sound quality was about the same. The internal components were probably even the same. The only real mechanical difference was ours didn't have the Morse code feature.
They were toys, but we tried using them for working around the farm and out in the fields but they failed pretty badly at that. The range was a real impediment on reliable communications at a distance. My cousin and I couldn't talk to each other from one end of a 1/2 mile field to another and we could still see each other at that range. 100 yards/meters was a real stretch for them. My dad and I couldn't hear each other when he was unloading grain from the combine and I was sitting in the truck he was unloading into. If only the FRS radios were available back then, with rechargeable batteries, we would have had something much more reliable and able to reach out much farther. But we'd never have had the "fun" of playing with these.

Yes the grey ones were 48Mhz, I've got a set of those, someone angrily told me these ones on this video weren't 27mhz sets in the comments on here 😂 it's literally stamped in to the plastic, you can see it on the video.

Nope these are 27Mhz versions look for model number 3-5951C they were on channel 14 AM and they still are, they did make versions in 49Mhz but these are not, I literally have it in my hand as im typing this and the frequency is written on the back of it and I did used to talk to mobiles on it. LOOK AT 56 SECONDS IN THE FREQUENCY IS ON THE BACK OF IT!
