Have fun I think it will be great. Get it down to the depth the trout are and you'll do good with it. In the early spring trout don't like to move far for their food.
This fly would be terrific as a smelt imitation for landlocked salmon. It is somewhat reminiscent of a Joe’s Smelt in the sense of having a duck flank wing but it’s otherwise different in the body & tail. I’ve never seen a tail tied like that with a split flank feather. Quite interesting. I think this is a much better fly & really wish I could fish it to see its action in the water. Clearly I need to get some more Gartside’s Secret Stuff or the alternative. Thanks for sharing this fly.
p.s. If his materials store reopen, I’ll let you know. I still look in on his site once in a while for his patterns & to remember him. He was one of the more remarkable & likable people I’ve met. If you find a new source or a good equivalent, please put a mention on your site. I’m a subscriber, so I’ll see it. I’m going to order some Ice Dub, but from the pics, I don’t think it has the same full length fibers.
@@TheFlymanJim Jim, I hope you have a good supply. I went to his site this am & couldn’t get his materials store to open. It was working when I last went there this past Dec/early Jan. I don’t know if this is temporary or permanent.
I love the looks of this streamer. Can’t wait to try it in heavy water this spring. I do have a question. Why black thread when everything is white or pearl? I watched Iron Mike tie it too on Lively Legz and he also used black 6/0 thread. I asked him the same question, but suspect it was just what he had in 6/0. Regardless, I always enjoy watching you tie,
I used it for the reason you stated. Just what was handy. White would be great, and my suggestion to make the head from the GSS or Ice Wing is the way I'll tie the rest of mine.
Lovely fly
Thanks Mike from LivelyLegz designed that one.
Nice streamer there Jim, I think I'm going to tie a couple of those for my own use! It looks very effective!

I would say get the GSS the price and quantity can't be matched.
