I did own this on VHS back in the day, I think I saw a trailer for it on another video and thought ‘ That’s right up my street.’ I think I may have see his other corrupt cop performance in Leon around the same time, but his performance is more nuanced in Romeo.
Oldman had hell of an early 90’s career, Lee Harvey Oswald, Dracula and Ludwig Van Beethoven all in the space of about 4 years, now that is talent.
This was the first time I saw Lena Olin in a film and her performance was seared into 20 year old brain! Definitely giving Linda Fiorentino in The Last Seduction a run for money in the ultimate female fatale stakes. Olin would bring her full on
Femme Fatale mode out again a few years later in The Ninth Gate.
Thanks for reminding me of this one Tony, I will have to give it a rewatch now!

As always, you're welcome, jnrazic. I thank you for your comments. The Ninth Gate. I only ever saw it once on a flight to - believe it or not - Washington DC in 2000. I'd refreshed myself with a few scotch and beer combos at the time, so memories are a bit blurry. Perhaps another I need to re-acquaint myself with. T.

Thats interesting way to watch a movie, I don’t think I ever saw/remember watching an in flight movie. The Ninth Gates is a personal favourite of mine, a film thats seems out of place in late 90’s horror:thriller cinema. Definitely a film for fans of Dennis Wheatley.

Nice one Tony! It's always been one of my favourite films: I can't think of any praise I could give it you haven't already. I never got the impression it was to be taken 100% seriously: it's got such a weird, pulpy, dimestore novel vibe to it that's obviously intentional - it's all such great fun! If video box sets were still a I thing, it could comfortably sit with The Last Seduction and the incredible The Grifters and not look too out of place.
And yeah, with that ending, even when I watched it when I was just a wee lad I got the impression that the rest of the Feds/cops are just as morally flexible as Jack was ("Nice shooting Jack."). It was perfect.
Last thought: even though you missed him from the line-up of great bit part actors in the picture, I absolutely love Will Patton's harried and terrified cop, relaying the story of Mona getting the better of him, as Isham's score reaches a crescendo in the background: "She turned around and she pointed her own gun at me, Jack, like some kind of an ANIMAL!"

2 things: 1) I worked at a theater showing The Krays, and I love it. I really didn't care for Tom Hardy's take on The Krays because Gary and Martin Kemp's version was so spot on. 2) Romeo is Bleeding is so dark and twisted, with an ending that's both heartbreaking and justified. Oldman and Olin are scorching. So glad you enjoyed it.

Fortunately this rather brilliant movie streaming presently and caught up with it...when it first came I wasn't a fan. Apart from the Olin bits...what a cracking movie with no-one phoning it in and Oldman proving (yet again) how he probably one of UKs finest actors and possibly most underused and undervalued.
I liked its multiple backstory threads and the narration that actually works (narration usely overused or underused).
Sciotra proving why she so in demand and making each scene with Oldman count...

I saw it opening weekend at the AMC Woods, bought the soundtrack, and the VHS (for $29). I particularly like Romeo Alone and I Know Better Now, and the soundtrack put me on a jazz kick, spurring me to pick up jazz albums. I think the writer, Hillary Henke, later co-wrote Wag the Dog. It's been a while since I've watched it, but I thought Jack was put into witness protection for killing Mona, and I always assumed his wife had just taken the money and left him. You left out Gary Patton, who was shaken by Mona pointing his own gun at him and disappointed that Jack was part of the filth. "But the ladies - the ladies still love me."

    • @tonybush555
      @tonybush555  9 วันที่ผ่านมา

Doesn't sound usual - to me, anyway - to be rewarded with a commendation and witness protection for murder and corruption. Rather a script contrivance to get Jack to the place and situation he needs to be in at the end. I suppose it could be explained as an expedient cover-up by the police and the FBI to avoid a scandal. Jack gives his wife the money, tells her to run, and if he himself survives they arrange in advance to meet in the very location he winds up in on one of two dates in the year. Time has passed and Jack waits expectantly on those dates. But she never shows - not in the flesh at any rate. Did she give up on him, did she die, will she one day arrive? We never really know. We're left to our own devices on that. Yeah, I do leave out a lot, not only here but from every review. Sometimes deliberately, sometimes not. It's mainly because to include everything would take me way too long. Many thanks. T.

Regardless of time or mood this has been one of my favourite three movies of all time. This confirmed film noir as my favourite genre/ style. It was also the first time I realised the limitless talent of Oldman who is always great but never more so than here. Finally it's a pity that Lena Olin always seems wasted in other roles but she really made a masterpiece of her performance here.

It is a fantastic film. Very underrated by a underrated filmmaker Peter Medak. He is made the great haunted house film The Changeling 1989 and The Krays. He should of had a better film career if it wasn't for the film he made with Peter Sellers. There is a great documentary directed by Peter Medak called The Ghost of Peter Medak.
As for this film its has got that pulpy film noir feel. It has got the right ingredients for a cult following. A flawed anti hero, with complex characters. This film feels like a darker Pulp Fiction but without the Tarantino film references. I feel if this film was released after Pulp Fiction it would of been accused of being a Pulp Fiction rip off which it isn't. Romeo is Bleeding is more reference to the trashy pulp novels. I also feel this film would of been a Moviedrome film.
A bit of trivia. Bon Jovi song Always was almost going to be used in this film. If you listen to introduction to the soundtrack Bon Jovi sings "Romero is Bleeding". Luckily for us the song wasn't used.
Romero is Bleeding the film is underrated and a worth a watch.
Tony have you considered reviewing a David Lynch film? As a tribute to the death of the legendary filmmaker.

    • @tonybush555

Thanks for an excellent comment, John. I was never much a fan of Lynch's work, feeling him to be a case of style and eccentric contrivance over feeling and substance. I may be wrong, but his main objective seemed to be to make the case for just how different, cryptic and clever he was to the detriment of storytelling. He did have the capacity to fascinate and capture the imaginations of many and his flair and visual talent is undeniable, but just not my personal cup of tea. I know his fans would burn me at the stake for such heresy, but there it is. If I was to review anything - and it sounds a very plebeian and bog-standard choice - it would be Blue Velvet which I did enjoy back in the day. Haven't watched it in an age, though. T.

it's a real shame cinematic gems are often relegated to obscure relics vastly unknown to cinephiles these days, Wolf Lake (1978) The Ship That Died Of Shame (1955) The Caretaker (1963) and of course Figures In A Landscape (1970) are examples of meaningful, thought provoking unseen gems of cinema left abandoned in the public consciousness.

what are your thoughts on The Searchers (1956) ? I watched it for the second time a few days ago and while I love the film and see it as a poignant exploration and indictment of prejudiced attitudes at the time. I spotted a few noticeable flaws in terms of it's pacing and annoying subplot with Martin's shrill girlfriend, the comedy seemed to contrast the film's darker elements as well, all things considered, I'd give the film a great but flawed 8/10. some may view this as blasphemy but those are my thoughts.

I think it's one of John Ford's best and it was always of much interest to me how John Wayne's Ethan character ironically sowed the seeds of the Western anti-hero that Eastwood would capitalise upon in the sixties. My one gripe is the ending, which always gave me the impression that Ford backed-out at the last moment and decided to give Ethan a change of heart. Framing him in the doorway and his walking away, casting him as an eternal outsider, was a masterstroke, though. Still, happy endings, eh? What can you do? Thanks, Streed. T.
