I've had my SA 260 for years now, I love it for its versatility since i tend to switch genres quite frequently. Would recommend to anyone on a budget looking for a step up from a starter guitar.
This was my first "real" guitar ever. Got it as a present right before the 8th grade talent show back in '96. Mine was HSS, but had a floyd rose. I have a S 521 now and it has a hardtail instead of floyd. These are the greatest guitars ever in my opinion. I've tried several other different guitars over the years I'm still most impressed by this one. I love the location and angle of the input jack probably the most. I hate an input jack flat on the front or on the edge of the body. After trying out other guitars that was something I quickly noticed was a huge turnoff but something I never really appreciated til I didn't have it anymore.
I have just bought an SA160 and I have to say when set up properly is every bit as good if not better than a cheap Strat. Great tone and looks a lot better too!

@@pavel5283 Glad you asked, because I’ve had experience with both Ibanez and Jackson. Neck is great. Thin, but not overly thin. The SA line doesn’t have a wizard neck. Jackson neck may be thinner. Jackson makes a fine instrument as well. Ibanez/Jackson make for some great comparisons, and my daughter used to have a Jackson. Darrell, your intro made me think: Your soulful, melodic style would probably be identifiable to me if I heard you anywhere. Radio or wherever. I think you are unique. Thanks for your insights and reviews too.
I have had many guitars over the years and the SA260FM was always my favourite (I had two). Great neck. One had locking tuners fitted. I always recommend Ibanez to anyone wanting a good playable guitar.
Thanks for doing this one. I'm going to sell my "S" (two Humbucker) and pull the trigger on the "SA 460" (better pick Ups, better trem bridge and locking tuners). 😎
Wow, just wow. I've been looking at the SA series, struggling to find decent reviews and then this pops up. You've sold it to me, everything seems perfect to me (well I'll probably replace the pickups, but they're still awesome at this price point). Anyway, thanks a lot !
I have an Ibanez SA-120 in black. I actually like it more than the Prestige ones because the body isn't as thin. My model was made in 2005, so it was still made in Korea. They switched manufacturing to Indonesia a few years later. I changed the bridge pickup to a Seymour Duncan TB-4 JB. It's still my favorite guitar to this day. Love it! Great Video!
This guitar was my workhorse from 2004-2015, it is very versatile, never had tuning stability issues with it (excepting tremolo action). On that note it had a very good tremolo system although without the FR it would then go out of tune naturally after a few dive bombs. When I bought it I fell in love with it for a long time. The only two things I'd criticise are that the single coils hum/buzz, maybe noiseless would have been better but more importantly in a live setting it doesn't have the volume that a thicker sounding guitar would have.
I love hearing you play a really good guitar. I'll say it again, you play so beautifully and tell such a wonderful story. You're definitely an inspiration to me. I find myself wanting to replicate the notes, tones and chord combinations you do. So glad I'm following your channel 🤘🎸🎸👍
I’ve had my SA for over 13 years, it always played great... however was after a few years in my tone search I realised although it was versatile, it was not amazing at anything. Since then I put in some Bare Knuckle pickups and have two volumes instead of a tone and it’s great! Had a S for a while, although was not a fan of mine with the edge trem. Always liked Ibanez, they are great!
I snagged a barely used one very cheap and Ibanez are well-made. This is an older one from Indonesia with H S S pickups and all original with gig bag! Mine is black, heavy and spotless all over with 1-piece maple neck from the old days ...
I had a pacifica for first guitar then a washburn bt-4 and now have a ibanez grg 270b and even though it's not high end it plays so well. Got to love an ibanez!
Based on this review I bought a week back the SA460 and I am so happy with it. Thank you for all your incredible reviews. Keep it up, Sir, you are THE most successful guitar reviewer.
@@DarrellBraunGuitar If you're doing more with this one, be sure to mention that the earlier SA's are Korean made (Cort or WMI) and the build quality is noticeably better. Look for a black plastic mounting on the bridge pickup as a quick guide; Ibanez changed to a silver housing as on your example in late 2004 just before moving production to China in 2005.
1st - Buy what you like. I'm just offering some perspective (for the more obsessive/serious young student, specifically) after three decades of playing. I've had two RGs and about a dozen other 6-string electric guitars over the years. 2nd - While this is certainly a pretty good starter axe, I'd strongly recommend a (aim for "used-but-in-the-newest-condition-possible', if funds are really tight) MIM Strat/Tele or Epiphone LP/SG instead. This will give you a leg up with the basic tonal qualities of the 'standard' instrument, which will in turn make your first ten years less of a struggle. Here's why: 3rd - By having a (relatively) proper spec of a classic model as you learn how to play, you won't have to wonder why you can't quite get a particular sound to be correct vs other sounds that seem to just flow out of the guitar naturally. In other words, explore all you can with that strat or LP ...and then play something else for a day or more - it will be a a real 'a-ha' moment that gives you a much better foundation from which to organize different tones in your musical vocabulary. Why wonder, when you can know right away for entry-level cash?? There will always be time for frankenstrats and whatever variant/mutant guitar strikes your fancy later down the road when you can afford them easier.
I bought a SA160FM last weekend, it's such an easy guitar to play and so well balanced. It plays better than my epiphone les paul custom which was 3 times the price.
Thanks for the review, Darrell. I've been eyeballing this on your rack for awhile now. I'm strongly considering this platform (SA series) to modify as a replacement for my very heavy MIM Strat. Ibanez always has acceptable build quality with well-constructed and comfortable neck profiles.
I have one of these SA series guitars! I don't think they really make them anymore but it's a great value and I love mine. Plus it looks really badass!
My first guitar GSA60. Played it for 10 years, and went to guitar store to look up for another guitar and im looking at all these squier strats and pacificas, other s type guitars and none feels so good as ibanez! Maybe because I'm used to it, and the others are even more expensive, so i just went with a better amp!
Just picked one of these up for $249 (used--made in Korea!) in all black. Black is not my favorite color on a guitar, but this guitar sounded so good, I just couldn't pass it up. Love it! CRANKS!, but you also get beautiful clean tones from the single coils. Good review... I recommend this guitar!
I was in my late teens when the first Ibanez guitars, which are now called the "Lawsuit Era" guitars, first hit the USA. Gibson and Fender had all but lost their following, thanks to the inferior products being turned out by CBS and Norlin, so the stage was set for the newly set high standards of Japanese luthiery to step in and take over. Well, they didn't actually "take over" the guitar market, but the Les Paul, Strat, and Jazz Bass copies they were making were of the same quality that the "Big Two" were making BEFORE they had sold out to corporations. And for $150 (for an Ibanez LP or Strat copy,) to $175 (for a perfect Jazz Bass copy,) back in the early - mid '70s you could buy what most of us felt was a better instrument than the originals at that time were. It wasn't long before the lawsuits started to fly, and Ibanez was forced to create their own designs. Enter: The Ibanez Artist. But here's the REALLY good part (for Ibanez, that is): while the fit, finish, and overall quality of Gibson and Fender seemed to fluctuate a LOT over the years, not one aspect (besides the design of their guitars,) of Ibanez's quality changed in any way, except to improve. This series of guitars is a perfect example. Once again they have managed to design a quality instrument with excellent design parameters, for an extremely reasonable price. Sure, a huge portion of it is the super low cost of Chinese manufacturing, but that was EXACTLY where Ibanez (and Japan, really,) were when they started building guitars, so they set up manufacturing plants and trained the people in how to produce a superior product - a product that everyone who worked on its manufacture would be proud to sign their name to. When you can get people like THAT on your team, you'll win every time. Another good job, Ibanez, and another great video, Darrell!
I have had my ibanez sa 160 for many years! I guess about 23 years,. Silver grey quilted maple, left handed and with a super low action + a demarzio multibucker installed at the bridge.. I scolloped the frets from the 11th up, and sanded the neck and the frets about 10 years ago.. and then set it up perfect, all by myself!! It's still my favourite guitar! And upon judging all other left handed guitars that I have played against it, since I set it up, it is still the nicest guitar I have ever played, and it plays nicer than the only Paul Reed Smith I ever played too.. This guitar is the reason that I only own 2 guitars.. because I can't find one that plays or sounds nicer.. so I don't buy them..
Dazza, you have by far the best banjo review channel + you can actually play a bit. Always been a Ibanez fan, but never got on with Wangy bars. Def be checking out this 'un 'cause I'm into cheap! (Least that what her indoors calls me.) Bless you sir.
There’s something soft and fuzzy about these pickups I just don’t like, similar to the original pups on my S470DX (first proper guitar) easily fixed by putting in a couple of Seymour Duncan humbuckers. Interestingly I messed up and put in the middle single coil out of phase but after hearing it I loved the versatility and tone of the in between sounds and I’d recommend anyone give it a go as it gives you something really different to work with so I have never ‘fixed’ it. Love that guitar but after owning it for 15 years or more it really needs some work on the frets. Slightly jealous of the HSS and non-locking term is this style of instrument fits so much better with how I play these days. Great video as usual!
i have 2 of them...love em..lots of diff-tones ....that blue looks amazing ...only thing i dont like is the input jack...i mean i love the buried look of it ....but its hard to get my hands on the lead...but thats minor ....love em .
I think I am going to buy a new Premium. I thought about the Japanese version, but I want stainless frets. Plus, the premium is cheaper and has everything I want including the new trem, killer neck, etc.
Was close to pulling the trigger on the SA560. It's beautiful, tones were fantastic and I love the abalone binding. Ended up getting a Mexican strat but one day I gotta go back and get that SA
You have the ability to make an affordable guitar sound great! Hats off to you. Next round try a Peavey JF-1. I stumbled onto these hidden jems a decade ago. Sweet as a ES335 but new around $399. I found mine on accident at GC Country Club Hills for under $200 out the door. Fast neck, surprisingly hot humbucker and great fit n finish.
I just found your channel...just wanted to say thank you! I spent my whole day off watching your Videos and playing guitar! Keep being Awesome Sir! Keep up the GREAT work!👍👍
You can still pick up run out stock of Ibanez Prestige RG652AHMFX guitars for a small fraction of what other brands would charge for a guitar of similar quality and about half the versatility. I have an R9 that simply doesn't come out of its case anymore because the Ibanez would slay it.
I tried a SA460 out in a guitar store and loved it. The amp there was really meaty and it cranked like a monster. I want one! The jumbo frets were a bit different for me but I'm sure I'd get used to them.
Don't forget to mention a push-pul switch on that SA360QM I did not have a clue when bought it, found out while playing with it and settings...and guess what,a push-pull True Duo switch is factory setup on it. :D
i have a GSA60, and honestly i have fallen in love with the middle and neck pickups on that thing i find the humbucker a little too spicy when i'm trying to play something through the clean channel, but if i go high gain it's got that shreddy sorta tone that works really well for heavy metal. it's just a super versatile guitar and i picked it up for less than £200 brand spanking new

Once had a RG 51 I think the best part about this is the action so low and no buzz missing it now a great guitar
Thanks, Darrell. I've been interested in these for a while, and your approval is always a good sign.
These are so much like what the original 540s guitars were, and what they initially were meant to be. Love my '88 540s.
Wow, just wow. I've been looking at the SA series, struggling to find decent reviews and then this pops up. You've sold it to me, everything seems perfect to me (well I'll probably replace the pickups, but they're still awesome at this price point). Anyway, thanks a lot !
There's also the SA560 with TUSQ nut and DiMarzio Black Velvet pickups. But more expensive, but incredibly beautiful with abalone binding.
I looked long and hard for one of these and picked up a Ibanez SA160QM used today for $200 US. I'm looking forward to it. Thanks for the review!
My first guitar was a purple sa260fm and I sold it like 4 years ago. Probably the worst decision I've ever made... It's ridiculously versatile
First guitar was an Ibanez grx140 in 2003 or so. Still got it. Its the one i learned on and still holds a decent tune
I would love a two or even three minutes solo of that. Absolutely loved it!
Always appreciate your honest, no nonsense videos.
That solo at 4:45 was beautiful bro, really touched me. Fantastic job. 🤘 - Kevin Venture
We picked up a used sa a few months ago, made in Indonesia, it is an amazing guitar. Also, ours does have the thinner style Ibanez neck.
great expression in your playing. tasteful vibrato, bends, slides and harmonics. keep it up!!
The s670 is also super nice. HSH and an edge zero 2, bound fretboard, 24 frets, etc. Really solid value.
Look Darrel, can we just start making the solos 2 minutes? Is that too much? I don't think so.
An Ibanez fan since'77. Man, that's a longtime ago.
Based on this review I bought a week back the SA460 and I am so happy with it. Thank you for all your incredible reviews. Keep it up, Sir, you are THE most successful guitar reviewer.
Congratulations on the new guitar!
Here's why:
3rd - By having a (relatively) proper spec of a classic model as you learn how to play, you won't have to wonder why you can't quite get a particular sound to be correct vs other sounds that seem to just flow out of the guitar naturally.
Just bought a sa120 with two humbuckers and a five way switch.mine was made in indonesia.great guitar.
I have a Korean SA 220QM I love it 👍
I'm a Fender guy but I bought a MIJ SA1260 back in the day, incredible guitar. Stock pups are great too.
Love it mate. I've started playing like you after watching so many videos
Thanks Darrell, you told me EXACTLY what I needed to know about this guitar!
Ibanez guitars have always had beautiful paint jobs.Good Job Darrell!
I have one of these SA series guitars! I don't think they really make them anymore but it's a great value and I love mine. Plus it looks really badass!
That tune at the beginning is really pretty.
I kinda wish they would bring back the Roadstars. I have one from the 80’s and love it.
One of your best solos, man!!!
It was great!!
Thanks Salvador!
Same guitar I've had for 8 years now, still playing like new.
Never thought about Ibanez before. Will have to check them out. Thanks D.B.
i have 2 of them...love em..lots of diff-tones ....that blue looks amazing ...only thing i dont like is the input jack...i mean i love the buried look of it ....but its hard to get my hands on the lead...but thats minor ....love em .
I think I am going to buy a new Premium. I thought about the Japanese version, but I want stainless frets. Plus, the premium is cheaper and has everything I want including the new trem, killer neck, etc.
Hey man another great video, appreciate what you do.
1:37 output. Guitars don't have an input, so it's an output jack. 😉
I had an SA series not long ago, traded it off, and regret doing that. One of my worst guitar decisions ever made, looking to get another SA now
Was close to pulling the trigger on the SA560. It's beautiful, tones were fantastic and I love the abalone binding. Ended up getting a Mexican strat but one day I gotta go back and get that SA
Just ordered an SA 120 from 2009 from Guitar Center. 149.00 and mainly because it has been modded with Crunchlab and liquifier pups. Hahah.
Hope it's good. I have my S370RRF and its killer.
Bro u are so polite man...dam ur instructions n tips are very subtle and prescribed💝
I just found your channel...just wanted to say thank you! I spent my whole day off watching your Videos and playing guitar! Keep being Awesome Sir! Keep up the GREAT work!👍👍
Thanks Tony!
Welcome to the channel!
I got the same guitar but I swapped the humbucker for a Seymour Duncan invader and the neck pick up from a fender strat and it makes a killer mix !
You can still pick up run out stock of Ibanez Prestige RG652AHMFX guitars for a small fraction of what other brands would charge for a guitar of similar quality and about half the versatility. I have an R9 that simply doesn't come out of its case anymore because the Ibanez would slay it.
Never even considered Ibanez before but I'm sorely tempted to get an SA for my next guitar. It's either that or some form of Strat.
Excellent review. Sold me. What song is that you were playing starting at 5:10?
I tried a SA460 out in a guitar store and loved it. The amp there was really meaty and it cranked like a monster. I want one! The jumbo frets were a bit different for me but I'm sure I'd get used to them.
Doesn't it use like medium?
That blue is amazinggg.
Just bought a faulty Ibanez SA160QM to fix up and from what this video shows its one hell of a guitar for the money!
Man it's like new guitar day every other week for Darrell 😜
Ive got an SA260 tucked away, i bought it used with EMG 81/SA/SA Pickups, i refuse to get rid of it, but i have to give it some love
Don't forget to mention a push-pul switch on that SA360QM
I did not have a clue when bought it, found out while playing with it and settings...and guess what,a push-pull True Duo switch is factory setup on it. :D
i have a GSA60, and honestly i have fallen in love with the middle and neck pickups on that thing
i find the humbucker a little too spicy when i'm trying to play something through the clean channel, but if i go high gain it's got that shreddy sorta tone that works really well for heavy metal. it's just a super versatile guitar and i picked it up for less than £200 brand spanking new
i got the same one too you could try lowering the bridge pickup if its too spicy
