    Hi Robin. Interesting video clip as always 👌👌. OK so I just bought 2 new Olympus Pro Lenses. I blame you and Rob Trek and Peter F entirely for this decision ha ha !! I bought 40 - 150mm with free X1.4 teleconverter and 300mm with free X2.0 teleconverter. Since I had 3 overseas wildlife trips cancelled I had the money !!! Here is my comment - The 40 - 150mm was supplied with the X1.4 and the 300mm with the X2.0. In reality the best combination I am using and trying right now is the other way round. The X2.0 works great with the 40 - 150mm since the lens has an aperture of f-2.8 and I get 600mm and f-5.6 and the 300mm works great with the X1.4 which is enough at 840mm and easier to hold and focus. One of the many reasons I bought these two lenses was the option that I gained both teleconverters. Getting great results with this combination already 😊😊

    One bit of kit I have been itching to try. I remember ditching my Canon 2x as it left only centre point focusing - good to see not the case for Oly. Turning the 40-150 into a 600mm f5.6 equivalent it will do the job on the rare occasions I want the extra reach.

      Indeed, if you already have the 40-150mm PRO, getting the 2x teleconverter makes a lot of sense. It is so small, but it adds so much reach!

    Very informational and helpful review! Thank you. I was not aware it is only compatible with those 2 pro lenses. Is the 1.4 converter similar with compatibility? I am on the brink to getting my OMD system and would have the 12-200mm.

  • @nstamer
    @nstamer 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Any chance you could perform a quick comparison of an image with and without the converter on the 300mm PRO (with the shot from the lens alone cropped to the same angle of view)?
    It might also be informative if the cropped version were taken at both f4 and f8 (and this might help give an idea of how the increased ISO also plays into sharpness).
    Given that the ISO frequently will need to be increased, it seems the converter would only really beat cropping in very bright conditions where ISO is kept low.
    Very helpful video, thank you

    Hi, thanks for ur great videos
    I'm looking to upgrade my gear (EM1 mk1) and i'm very interrogative about the future of micro 4/3. I'm interesting in EM1x or Em1 Mk3 and i d like to know the compatibility of this body with the panasonic 50/200 2.8/4
    1- Does the IS of the body is ok with it (or the compatibility of the lense IS) ...cause i think the combination of the two IS is correct only on Panasonic body like G9 for example ?
    2- Does the focus braketing of the Em1x or Em1 MK3 is ok with that lens ?
    Sorry for my english ...i'm french !
    Thanks u.

    I have the Olympus 40 - 150 with the new 2x teleconverter I get a 600 mm field-of-view at 5.6 ... I also have the Panna Leica 100 to 400. I started out with a Pant 100-300, then got myself a 300mm Pro n MC x1.4, n then Oly announced 150-400. I would have waited for that. I am just a for fun wildlife foto graph guy, need reach. Pant 100-400 tempting me, told upto 300mm, it is pretty sharp but beyond 300mm, it's not so sharp.
    I wonder if any tc fits Pant 100-300 (just wondering, doubt quality wil be good). I had a lens that u screw in front of lens to increase reach by x2. Boy, it works but in bright light, lots of color aberration n fringing. Just tinkering with toys in my backyard but will be worth it in cost if these tricks worked.
    And, goes without saying, Mr Robin Wong, your reviews are excellent. Simple. Worth watching and applying. Good job. Keep it up.

    Hmmmm......I thought that it would be great to get one of these converters to get the longer reach with my 12-150 lens but at a cost of .....gulp, I won't even think about the cost.........I decided that with the 12-150mm and the 16Mp count of the camera a bit of cropping in the PC files will do the exact same effect and I don't have to swell my gadget bag, or get another bigger one, to get another bit of kit in........whichever way you go, you still have to use a tripod (or monopod) to get the picture steady enough to get a good picture anyway.....side by side comparison, no matter how steady your hand is, with and without a tripod will tell you immediately on the PC that you should have used a tripod.
    When I'm out and about, all of my shots with the 12-150 are taken hand held but by bracing on a three trunk or garden wall etc......sometimes there's no going back to re-get that special shot with the "soft" image.
    The bird shots and the close ups are really fantastic and it shows what someone with the knowledge and expertise can achieve.........the Olympus camera helped too.
    Going on EBAY for a converter turned up millions of OM lens converters for as little as A$20 but as you need 2 m4/3 adaptors.....back and front...... for any m4/3 lens to attach to one, it won't work.

    Thanks, Robin! Does the complexity of the MC-20 equate to a higher grade of output than the MC-14? i.e. would the 2x magnification approach that of the x1.4 magnification, or are the real-world image compromises simply proportional?

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did not push the magnification to the maximum, the closest was that lizard that I shot. On paper MC-20 gives you more magnification than MC-14 when it comes to macro shooting (I hope that's what you meant). I'd think the MC-14 is sharper overall, but MC-20 is pretty close!

I want to use some of that Olympus converters for my long focal catadioptric lens M42 MC Rubinar 1000/10 with 4/3 or micro 4/3 adapter. Now i'm using Soviet's made 2X conveter MC КОНВЕРТЕР K-1. It's not bat but i thing it can be better.

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't have the EC-20, even if I do, there is no way to compare the new MC-20 to it as they fit onto different lenses. I don't understand your questions about micro lenses. MC-20 can only work with two lenses now: 40-150mm F2.8 PRO and 300mm F4 IS PRO. both are not macro lenses.

Both EC-20 and MC-20 are just teleconverters (or Barlow lens like for telescopes), main difference between them is Flange focal distance. I need to know what is better? Longer flange focal distance or shorter?
      According to the laws of physics longer must be better, because it have
      smaller angle of light refraction.

      At roughly matched up distances of 100 mm, 200mm, 300mm reach, Pana was better than Oly non-micro 4/3 (with and without teleconverters).

  • @DmitryBrodsky007

    Robin did you find that stopping down, perhaps one stop, would help the sharpness with the converter? I know it typically does but in your case most of your shots are wide open. Is that because your iso was alrady too high and you did not want to experiment with narrow apertures?

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The light level prevented me from doing that. If you saw the EXIF data, I was shooting at dangerously low shutter speeds, at rather high ISO (1000 or above). If I increase my ISO further, more details will be lost and that is not a good representation of what the lens can do. I am sure others would do this test, maybe with the birds or animals under direct sunlight.

      No, the teleconverter works only with Olympus two lenses as stated in the video at the moment. It won't work with anything else.

      @@timzlow it is impossible to fit the MC-20 into the macro lens. Trust me on this. The protrusion has no space to go into the lens.

    This Teleconverter works with Leica lens for Panasonic ?

  • @MarchalisVan
    @MarchalisVan 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have this combo. And a couple things to add.
    Bird wildlife is harder to photograph, they stay way way less still so higher 800 + Shutter speed is a must for most birds, which limits this lens substantially. So don't expect great pictures as a wildlife photographer unless it's a bright day etc, high shutter speeds is more of a limit than this video foretells. The lens without the converter is strangely heavy for a m4/3 lens and not much better than some of the 100-300 options if at all in final image quality. The difference from 300 to 400 is not a big deal (If considering cheaper lenses), for a bird portrait this can be the difference of 1 step if you want to fill your frame with a medium sized bird. Again I must add for anyone wondering, this lens combo is not usable for wild bird photography in the same way as Robin is taking pictures of contained ones.

      40-150mm is a PRO lens, hence it will outperform 75-300mm. The MC-20 does not degrade the image quality by that much, as I have shown in this article. even with MC-20 attached, you get F5.6 on the 40-150mm pRO, which is an advantage over F6.7 on 75-300mm longest end.

    • @crankCINEMA
      @crankCINEMA 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@robinwong I've used the MC-14 on it, its a manual focus lens so the electronic contacts don't need to connect. It was originally a full frame lens but to my suprise it is sharp on MFT too. The fact it has an extension to the mount for MFT is why it has the gap for the adapter. Now that I think about it you could probably use the teleconverter on any adapted lens (an adapter without optical elements) as it creates the space for the teleconverter (however you could use the original lenses teleconverter too... I suppose).

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@crankCINEMA I'd highly suggest testing with the MC-20 first before making any conclusions, as MC-20 has a different design in comparison to MC-14, both are very different adapters. There may be some issues (lenses won't focus properly, etc), so I would not be so quick to say it works before trying it out.

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Let me try to understand you. Are you asking how is the lens losing brightness when using teleconverter?
      If that is your question, then the answer is because the teleconverter uses only the center potion of the main lens, hence the aperture opening has become smaller.
