We actually found out that Ace had been to Wano in the Marineford arc - he'd made that hat for Oars' descendant after learning how in Wano. We find out this arc that he learned that from Otama.
Luffy went to Wano and immediately acquired a little sister. I love getting to see big brother Luffy and how much he resembles his brothers and how much Tama harkens back to little Luffy. Also you just being like. Can Tama brainwash Kaido? Is that an option XD
24:45 Zoro's reaction ❤ "Luffy!!! You're here!!" I bet he was so worried about Luffy and them going to Big Mom 's territory. Most people often forget how much Zoro cares about his crew because of his stoic front. Of course he has faith in them and trusts that they would be okay, because they are strong (body and soul) and also maybe because of the trust he has on their luck (it has never failed him not even once until now). But it's inevitable for him to feel more relieved when they are all together, so they can watch each other's backs. Almost every time the crew has been forced to split up, he has voiced/shown some reluctance (back in Water 7, in Dressrosa, and in Zou). I mean, people often talk about Zoro's loyalty with the "Nothing Happened" moment. But for me, it's a testament of love; he puts his crew, his family, higher than his life and higher than his dream, and it's not only in that one moment.
7:25 Franky is working for a guy called Minatomo, and this is not the first time we see this character design in the manga. You see, all the way back in chapter 1 there's this really powerful scene of Higuma and the mountain bandints getting into Makino's bar and trashing a bottle over Shanks, who chose not to fight back. To get into the bar, Higuma kicked and broke the door. In the next panel, the door is perfectly ok. A little later, Oda received a letter, that was published in the SBS of volume 7, suggesting that he had made a mistake when drawing the 2nd panel, as the door clearly needed to stay broken. As a reply, Oda was so kind as to enlighten us, and explained that a wandering carpenter by the name of Minatomo immediately fixed the door, as he cannot tolerate seeing stuff broken. When Minatomo was introduced again, in ch 909, now in Wano, someone realized they looked the same, so again, they asked Oda if they were both the same person. He replied (paraphrasing) "Back then he was fixing the door to the bar. Now he is in the closed Wano country, isn't that weird? Truth of the matter is that they are not the same person, but they are related by blood. As a matter of fact, a ship from Wano arrived in the East Blue a few decades ago. One of the descendants of someone from that ship is someone we all know very well" Yes, chapter 1 has a tie-in to Wano, even if it was originally not intended. And also, who from the East Blue is a descendant from a Wano immigrant? Why and how did this ship leave when the borders are closed? Who else (besides Minatomo) was on that ship? Were they exiles? Rebels? Refugees?
@@thefictionalscholar It does! But what I love the most is that, while the descendant was surely planned beforehand, the revelation came because he decided to integrate a gag character he made on an SBS to justify a mistake xD It was Oda trolling on and SBS. It was in the East Blue, related to chapter 1! And it tying in to Wano, over 2 decades later is one of the most Oda things in the series
For the second part, I think Chapter 955 would be a good place to get to, as that's the end of Act 2. There's a small intermission between Act 2 and 3 which you'll probably want to cover by itself.
1:30 If you feed Luffy, you are his friend, even if you try to kill him immediately afterwards (like Rebecca). That's how important food is for Luffy. Depriving his friend Tama (because she fed him) of food is unforgivable. You don't mess with food in front of Luffy. Also, building on stuff you say later in the video, in Japan an older brother has a real responsibility to his younger siblings. Since the father is usually away fighting and/or working, it's the eldest son's duty to be the protector of the family (and that's why you can usually see kids in anime addressing older kids as "big brother", usually "aniki" or "niisan", or in One Piece you can see that with Carrot and Chopper (she calls him "Chopper no aniki" which immediately devolves into "Choniki" or "Chobro" in the translation) and with Yosaku and Johnny calling Zoro "Aniki" or "Big bro" (and later on the rest of the crew as well, even Big Bro Nami or "Nami no aniki"). It's a sign of respect and/or admiration). Luffy is Ace's and Sabo's younger brother, the one to be protected. With Tama you can see him assuming the role of older brother, same as Ace had done before with both of them, the protector. Tama was Ace's little sister, that makes her Luffy's little sister, and you dare deprive her of food of all things? And torture her with pliers?? And in front of Luffy??? Yeah, you are as good as dead, hope you enjoyed your life until now because it's over.
There's a massive focus on kabuki in the Wano arc, and on kabuki's three act structure. If you pay attention, everything happens in sets of three. From the high level things like 3 acts, to the low level things like 3 mentions of the toad oil Usopp is selling. And it happens with so many things. Oda's managed to invent the literary equivalent of juggling in iambic pentameter. It's honestly intimidating. (moved from the community post as it makes more sense here)
I know it's early, but in act three the anime adds amazing scenes that I'll recommend you to watch to complement the manga because they're that good. I'll list them in the review of part two! Remember in the Reverie Review you said you thought Luffy was ready to be called an Emperor? Welp, that didn't age very well did it? Kaido one shoting Luffy is the reality check we all needed to see that even though Luffy is strong he's still not ready yet, his encounter against Big Mom and her crew went as well as it did because they had the surprise factor, but I don't think Luffy and company would had be able to face Big Mom if a face to face encounter had happened. But yeah, Wano is crazy and we are just getting started.
The Kaidou dragon reveal was crazy. 6 years since Punk Hazard and that was a running theory the entire time. I remember yelling at the top of my lungs when it was confirmed lol I also had that panel as my phone background for around a year. It looked so good!
11:15 As it's plainly evident, Wano is based in Japan, so there are a lot of references to Japanese folk tales. The one about the dumplings, or kibi-dango, had already been used by Oda, it's the Legend of Momotaro, where he feeds kibi dango to a dog, a monkey and a pheasant to befriend them, and they march onto Onigashima to fight the Oni. Dog, Monkey and Pheasant, ring any bell? Red Dog, or Akainu, Yellow Monkey or Kizaru, Blue Pheasant or Aokiji. Other legend referenced just before is that of the koi fish climbing the waterfall. In Chinese mythos (as we know, A LOT of Japanese myths and folklore comes directly from China), the legendary King Yu, the Great cut through the mountains, which created a waterfall on the Yellow River. As the water was pushed into the waterfall, several carps were pushed down, and were later trying to climb the waterfall up. Yu's wife went to her father, the Jade Emperor, and explained the situation to him. The Jade Emperor established the Longmen (Dragon Gates) on top of the waterfall, and promised that every carp that succeeded in climbing back up over the Longmen, would be turned into a mighty dragon. Side note 1: This myth is believed to have been born because of the silver carps, or flying carps, native to China, that can leap up to 10 ft into the air. Side note 2: Magikarp and Gyarados from Pokémon are also inspired by this legend
I've actually read the Momotaro legend and I honestly want to dig into it (after I finish Wano of course) and hopefully have a discussion about how One Piece uses folklores to express similar stories - like if Luffy and crew are to succeed in Wano, they would be the new stories of legend, and Momo would become the Momotaro figure for Wano people. I didn't know about the Chinese mythos, and I love it so much! Thank you!
@@thefictionalscholar It's impossible to keep track, though. He takes elements from so many legends and myths and history all over the world, that I don't know of anyone able to keep up with all of it on their own. Symbolism, myths and folklore from all around the world, from Shinto to Buddhism, from Christianity to obscure tribal deities, Greece, Rome, Egypt, Mesoamerica, you name it, and there's surely something hidden somewhere in the story. Even the geography and/or architecture of different islands takes IRL inspiration (not all of them, but many, including Zou).
I really love you actually get Sanji. It's frustrating bc everyone disregards him so much and I identify a lot with his past so it kind of hurts to see people just taking swings at his character
I absolutely love Sanji. I know he’s flawed, but gosh his character is one of my absolute favorites in One Piece. ❤ I will always love my boy, and it is sad people take shots at his character all the time.
The last time we saw Hawkins it was the introduction of Kaido with him jumping from the clouds into the middle of a meeting of a few of the worst generation pirates.
@EkoBahamut what do you mean probably never will be, the guy just told you that it IS explained after act 1, some people have no reading comprehension or just dont pay attention
I think you will like to cover in the "read with me" the chapters after 2° part of Wano. Give them a try, I promise that you will love ! And when a say them is because I think that you must read more than the 5/6 chapters that you normally read. Do something like reverie. Thanks for the awesome videos!
53:00 To build on top of that potential connection: Remember Kin'emon hated dragons in Punk Hazard? And Momo hiding in Zou because he didn't want to be seen in his dragon form? As for the artificial Devil Fruits, they are unrelated. The one Momo ate was created by Vegapunk and left behind because he considered it a failure. We don't know how it was created at all. But we do know how the Smiles that were created by Doffy from Caesar's S.A.D. are: Basically, S.A.D. is "animal essence soup". He takes a bunch of animals, extracts their DNA or something, and makes a soup with it, that later gets sort of injected into a fruit, that becomes a Smile. Smiles have a 10% success rate. If you are in that 10%, you become a Gifter: a part of your body gets permanently modified to resemble (a part of) an animal, and you acquire the weakness to water regular DFs have. If you are in the other 90%, you become a Pleasure: you acquire that same water weakness, no animal trait, and you cannot stop laughing. Momo's fruit, from the get go, doesn't work like that, he can turn it on and off like a regular Zoan DF, even if he doesn't know how to control it. With normal Zoan fruits, as we see with Chopper, retaining human intelligence and the capability to speak even in his reindeer form, or as explained with Lucci that the fruit of a carnivore makes you more bloodthirsty, some parts of you can be permanently modified, but overall, you can revert back to more or less the same you were before eating it at will
I really like how you recap all these essential information 👍 Even for people binging OnePiece, it's very hard remembering all the details upon first read. I just want to ask something about the Smile fruits: When we were in Dressrosa, I think I remember that in the anime the Tontatas were watering some trees with the SAD chemical and that's how the trees were able to produce the Smile fruits. Is this a liberty taken by the anime team, or just me not remembering this correctly? 🤔
@@evelynarhondi6375 No, that's just me not just summarizing it without going into details, because I didn't accurately remember how the SAD goes into the fruits, don't worry xDD That's why I said that the SAD gets "sort of injected into a fruit", and it kinda does, if you don't think about it for more than 3 seconds: It gets absorbed by the tree roots, and through the trees' fruit-bearing natural process, it gets "injected" into the fruits. But thank you, I very much appreciate your words. I do this because binge readers don't get that week to ruminate what happened, so it's easier to forget stuff, while people who've been reading/watching weekly can have it pop in our heads on Tuesday, go back to check a detail, talk about it with a friend, watch videos on it, and so on. Basically, we get a small (sometimes too small) amount of info, like a 5-min read, and we can process and revisit it, even unconsciously, for at least a week before adding more info on top of that. If you are binging you go at it for at least an hour, and before you notice you are already reading more, adding more info, depriving yourself of the ability to properly process it. So I try to bring back that info you are bound to forget or be unable to connect, to the foreground. As proven, I can misremember or make mistakes as well, but I try to double check if I consider it relevant to the point I'm trying to get across. In this case it was the differences between Smiles and Momo's fruit, so I didn't even try to push my memory a little bit for that extra detail, and I tried to be vague instead xD And on top of that, I try to add context that the reader is intended to have, like knowing the story of Momotaro to be able to connect Akainu, Aojiki and Kizaru to it, or feeding kibi dango to animals to befriend them before going to Onigashima. They may play a role in the narrative, they may just be non-transcendent references by Oda, or even misdirections, but that's stuff he counts on you knowing when he writes them. The legend of Urashima Taro for Fishman Island (you read Ryugu and Otohime, and if you know the legend you are waiting for the Tamatebako that ages you to appear, as well as a turtle*), Momotaro for the Admirals and Wano, or Susanoo using the Ame-no-Habakiri to kill the Yamata-no-Orochi in the shinto myth, these are all things the average Japanese knows since childhood. I don't go too deep into connections to other mythologies and legends or basic symbolism, a) because I probably don't know them myself, and b) because you are not intended to know those beforehand, they are just a nice perk if you do know them, so I might mention those I catch of but won't go too deep (*) In the story, Urashima Taro is a fisherman who saves a turtle, who takes him to the underwater Ryugu Kingdom. He spends a couple of days there, with Princess Otohime, who before he departs gives him the Tamatebako making him promise he won't open it. When he returns to his town, it's been like 400 years, and everyone he ever knew is already dead. He opens the box, and immediately ages, as it contained the time he sort of lost. I usually wouldn't explain all this, but at least advice people to google the story, to at least get the gist of it.
@@AnyMEmdq Thanks for the reply 😊 I always read and enjoy your comments. It's wonderful how all of us can talk and exchange opinions and information like this.
@@evelynarhondi6375 Once again, thank YOU! And I'm really happy you enjoy my nerding out. I find this story to be amazing in almost every aspect, one of the best (if not THE best) things I've ever read. And that comes from a Tolkien and Philip Dick nerd. So geeking about it is a pleasure on its own, but even bigger if people get to enjoy it, or even build on that (or point out where I messed up as well, that's EXTREMELY appreciated).
About Tama's DF: Regardless of the specifics of how it works, we already know that Haki negates DF powers. We can assume that all the Yonko have pretty strong Haki. So we can deduce that Tama's powers are unlikely to work on Kaido, under normal circumstances at least. About Ace in Wano: Every time it's referenced, in the anime we also see a bit of him, and every time it's done beautifully. For the part you have already read, I would suggest you watch the Red Hawk Luffy uses against Holdem, when he had kidnapped Tama; wonderful scene. About the anime: For the point you are in right now, I totally recommend the first couple of episodes of the arc: with the Sunny entering Wano and what the rest of the StrawHats are up to (especially Zoro as a wondering ronin is soooo good). Also, the Tama rescue, and dragon-Kaido's sudden appearance.
I have 4 things to say: 1) I don't think any of us expected "Time travel." 2) Tokie is the Japanese onomatopoeia for a working clock. 3) O-Kiko introduces themselves in a masculine way. 4) Luffy had the Nidai Kitetsu, the predecessor to Zoro's Sandai Kitetsu.
(Careful of Wano ending spoilers in my comment) As an anime only watcher, and someone how's caught up to the anime, I just heard her say this 10:25 , and literally had a Katakuri futuresight moment to the end of Wano. Love to see it
Maybe you're thinking to much about it but she definitely can't just control him then "oh now we win lol" that would be a pretty stupid way to solve the problem and would be bad writing
By now you know Luffy. There are some lines you don’t cross: - never threaten his friends - never threaten anyone who has shown kindness to him with food - withholding food from innocent people You need to pace yourself with this arc. I’m guessing 4-5 recordings
Well Luffy did get one shot and knocked out before this. On Punk Hazard by Caesar when he turned the oxygen in the air to gas and suffocated everyone. I mean. If u had any assumptions that Luffy truly lived up to his title as a 5th Emperor. I hope u understand. Luffy ain't shit, this is the big leagues and he ain't ready. Kaido straight up dunked on the man. Did you forget his introduction by the narrator? Kaido, King of the Beast, People say, "In a one-on-one fight, Always bet on Kaido." Land, sea, and air. Out of every living thing in the world. This pirate is said to be the strongest creature alive. Also there's something I gotta ask and I'm sad u didn't talk upon it was the 921 color spread. If ur reading it in Black and white u gotta look in color, which fit is the best?
Technically kaido is a special fruit user that happens to make him a legendary azure dragon following the lore that a specific Pokémon is based on. Tama’s ability affects SMILE users because of its artificial nature. Likely something to do with the will of the animal being manifested as involuntary animal parts that tamas fruit probably effects stronger than real zoan users that have their whole minds
Ehm, excuse me but, isn't this technically a spoiler? I think she has not yet reached the point where Kaido's DF is revealed 🤔 Sorry if I am mistaken 🙏
@evelynarhondi6475 No you are 100% ok and correct now that I think on it. I remember his info gets dropped relatively early but I also forget how long Wano actually is. It wasn't in Part 1 so it was likely in Part 2 so I edited my comment to be as general as possible without changing my Tama conjecture because we don't actually get an explanation if I recall ...If I'm wrong on that I'll gladly change and censor more because I would hate to lessen someone's journey as nakama

With normal Zoan fruits, as we see with Chopper, retaining human intelligence and the capability to speak even in his reindeer form, or as explained with Lucci that the fruit of a carnivore makes you more bloodthirsty, some parts of you can be permanently modified, but overall, you can revert back to more or less the same you were before eating it at will
I really like how you recap all these essential information 👍
Even for people binging OnePiece, it's very hard remembering all the details upon first read.
I just want to ask something about the Smile fruits:
When we were in Dressrosa, I think I remember that in the anime the Tontatas were watering some trees with the SAD chemical and that's how the trees were able to produce the Smile fruits.
In this case it was the differences between Smiles and Momo's fruit, so I didn't even try to push my memory a little bit for that extra detail, and I tried to be vague instead xD
And on top of that, I try to add context that the reader is intended to have, like knowing the story of Momotaro to be able to connect Akainu, Aojiki and Kizaru to it, or feeding kibi dango to animals to befriend them before going to Onigashima. I don't go too deep into connections to other mythologies and legends or basic symbolism, a) because I probably don't know them myself, and b) because you are not intended to know those beforehand, they are just a nice perk if you do know them, so I might mention those I catch of but won't go too deep
(*) In the story, Urashima Taro is a fisherman who saves a turtle, who takes him to the underwater Ryugu Kingdom.
@@AnyMEmdq Thanks for the reply 😊
I always read and enjoy your comments.
Back during the Zou arc, Momo said he met Gold D. Roger
About Tama's DF:
Regardless of the specifics of how it works, we already know that Haki negates DF powers. We can assume that all the Yonko have pretty strong Haki. So we can deduce that Tama's powers are unlikely to work on Kaido, under normal circumstances at least.
About Ace in Wano:
Every time it's referenced, in the anime we also see a bit of him, and every time it's done beautifully.
For the part you have already read, I would suggest you watch the Red Hawk Luffy uses against Holdem, when he had kidnapped Tama; wonderful scene.
About the anime:
For the point you are in right now, I totally recommend the first couple of episodes of the arc: with the Sunny entering Wano and what the rest of the StrawHats are up to (especially Zoro as a wondering ronin is soooo good).
Also, the Tama rescue, and dragon-Kaido's sudden appearance.
Kaido is the guy who tried to kill himself when we first saw him. It makes sense why he drinks a lot
Chapter 1040 to 1045 is gonna be crazy.
Kiku introduces herself in a feminine way, what are you talking about?
@@MayMoment_ In the original Japanese, when she says, "I am a Samurai." The words she uses are masculine in nature.
@@erniewall3128 do you read Japanese or did you just hear this from someone online spouting nonsense?
Also there aren't nobles, the people in the flower capital are still civilians
Momonosuke said he met the Roger Pirates back in Zou.
Once again, I have no idea why the official translations choose to translate Nekomamushi and Inuarashi when they're character names.
you are ruining the comment section. get your thoughts together and type one comment ffs
LESSS GOOO
Did you notice what Bellamy was drafting in his final cover story page?
(Careful of Wano ending spoilers in my comment)
As an anime only watcher, and someone how's caught up to the anime, I just heard her say this 10:25 , and literally had a Katakuri futuresight moment to the end of Wano. Love to see it
I can't think of a single situation that otama would be able to do anything at all against kaido regardless of her ability
Maybe you're thinking to much about it but she definitely can't just control him then "oh now we win lol" that would be a pretty stupid way to solve the problem and would be bad writing
By now you know Luffy. There are some lines you don’t cross:
- never threaten his friends
- never threaten anyone who has shown kindness to him with food
- withholding food from innocent people
You need to pace yourself with this arc. I’m guessing 4-5 recordings
This arc will definitely be getting split up into at least 4-5 sessions, maybe more depending on what happens later on lol
I think she has not yet reached the point where Kaido's DF is revealed 🤔
Sorry if I am mistaken 🙏
@evelynarhondi6475 No you are 100% ok and correct now that I think on it. I remember his info gets dropped relatively early but I also forget how long Wano actually is. It wasn't in Part 1 so it was likely in Part 2 so I edited my comment to be as general as possible without changing my Tama conjecture because we don't actually get an explanation if I recall ...If I'm wrong on that I'll gladly change and censor more because I would hate to lessen someone's journey as nakama
Law a doctor sure but he doesn't openly do good things for people we still gotta learn more about the Rocky Port incident that Law was involved with and Koby saving civilians lives
I might recommend reading to chapter 959 for the next video. See how you feel what you get to that point
SPOILER AHEAD

Worry not. There will be negative chill from Oda this arc. And as far as we currently are in the next arc.
I figured. I shall prepare myself lol
Their are three acts in Wano
You forgot to mention that Kinemon and Momo are not father and son
I’m willing to bet that by the end of act two you will hate Orochi even more than you hated Judge in Whole Cake island
I've met him...I hate him. It is a different type of hate than what I had for Judge, but I still despise the man.
Wano will destroy you
